Why no chime?

My early 2005 G5 does not chime on start-up but is working mostly as it should. What do I do to fix this?

If sound is not working at all, sometimes just inserting an audio plug into each of the audio output jacks (front and back) can clear the problem up, as a little schmutz on one of the contacts can make the machine think there is a plug in the jack.
If sound is otherwise working, then as japamac notes, the battery is the prime suspect.  In any event, an aged battery can cause any number of odd things to happen at startup and should be replaced as a matter of course.
I could tell a long story (and have) about what having a punked out PRAM backup battery in a laptop can do.

  • No chime on start-up & folder w/'?' appears on  screen

I just purchased a dual core 2.3 GHz on eBay. It did not have any of the original disks but supposedly had OS 10.5 installed. I don't have a LCD monitor, yet, but tried to use a CRT w/VGA/DVI adapter. When powered up, I do not hear the chime, yet none of the LED lights are on either. The only thing that appears on the screen is a small blue folder in the center of the screen with the apple smiling face and a question mark on the front. I guess my question is this: is it possible to use a VGA monitor with the GeForce 7800 card? And, if it is, why no chime and why doesn't the OS seem to boot?

It doesn't know where to boot from which leads to the "?" on boot.
    Zap the PRAM.
    Reset the PMU.
If you hold down CMD + OPT + O + F you should see a white screen, Open Firmware.
type commands if you get there -
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
then hold down OPTION to select or find boot drive.
So you don't have OS X on a FW drive you can use? The 2.3 came out late '05 and needs 10.4.3 I think.
So your system came with a flashed 7800?

  • How do I locate the source of a random .wav notice in 9.0.1?

There's a chime that pops up randomly, and I have no idea what's causing it or how to stop it. It's very annoying. How can I find it?

    Hi joleigh55-
I cannot tell you why the chime is occurring. Is it connected to a particular action or website? Are you sure it's from Firefox, or is it from an open application?
If it's one particular sound that you dislike, you could search on your local computer for .wav files, and delete the one you don't like.

  • SAFARI crashed and now strange problems

When Safari crashed all the topics in the "collections" bar that I had deleted returned. Hi Captfantastic, welcome to Apple discussions.
When Safari crashed all the topics in the "collections" bar that I had deleted returned. They also had all the websites that were listed originaly, and I had deleted, back in addition to the ones I had added.
Do you mean your deleted bookmarks are back? Hmm not sure what would cause that, did you remove any files? Any more info it may help, or perhaps some ones else knows why & will chime in.
Try this, Quit Safari, go to your username Home~/Library/Preferences/find the file com.apple.Safari.plist, move that to the trash..
Do not empty the trash if it doesn't help you can put the file back restoring you preferences overwriting the newly created one.
The bar on the bottom of the page (forget what it's called) Is also gone. Don't know where it went or how to get it back.
That's the Status bar, on the Safari menu bar, under "View" click show Status bar.
Hope this helps some. Let us know.

  • Why is the startup chime so loud on my iMac?

I just bought it yesterday from the Apple store, so it's brand new.
I find that the volume control does not influence the startup chime.
I've looked on-line for solutions, it seems others have this same problem. I've tried "zapping the PRAM" to no success.
Keeping an audio plug installed in the headphone jack does not disable the internal speakers from booming the startup chime.
Does anyone have a solution to this please? It seems silly that such an expensive computer should have such an uncorrected problem.
    Thank you,
    geo

Well, my volume control certainly does influence the start up chime and I cannot see why yours shouldn't.   Use keyboard buttons F11 and F12 to adjust your sound level last thing at night and if your machine auto starts in the morning it will not wake the household.
True, if volume control is turned down to a lower level, you would have to adjust it for other sound output that you do want later, iTunes and videos on browsers etc, but it requires little effort.

  • Why does the system chime sound whenever I open Reader 11 of a pdf document?

Why does the system chime sound whenever I open Reader 11 or a pdf document?

Don't know. You can turn system sounds OFF in your control panel. XP it's under Sounds, Vista, 7 & 8 it's under Hardware and Sound.
    Click Change system sounds
Select "No Sounds" to disable all windows interface sounds.
    Click Apply and OK

Why does it take almost a minute after chime for apple logo to appear in my MBP

Have you recently replaced your drive or RAM?  If so, try resetting your PRAM.  This is a common problem after replacement.  After I replaced my drive, when I first turned my machine on I thought I screwed up the drive replacment since the Apple logo didn't come up... thankfully it eventually came up.  After resetting the PRAM, it booted as quickly as it had previously.  I've had this happen on two machines:

why is there no chime when my macbook re-starts?

    Jim Baggins,
perhaps because it was somehow set to not chime?
Try opening Terminal, and run the following command in the Terminal window:

  • Why does my iPhone give me a message chime at the same time everyday?

For the last week, my iPhone 4 gives me a message chime everyday at the same time, 10:41 PM.  Yet, there are no notifications, messages, badge icons, or calendar dates.  I have no idea why it keeps doing this?  Has anybody else come across this issue?  If anybody can help out a guy who is fairly new to the iPhone it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Nope, I've gone through the Clock, Reminders App and through my Notifications and I can't seem to find anything that has a notification for that time.  I was wondering if it was something with my Cellular Network Carrier?

  • Why does my iPhone 5 give random chimes?  I have all notifications, etc., turned off.  Seems to be on reason for this.

Why does my iPhone 5 give random chimes?  I have all notifications, location services, etc., turned off.

I had the exact same problem with my iPhone 4. I would select the song I was wanting to play and it would load for a second, then simply shuffle to the next. It did this with almost my entire iPod. So, I synced it with my computer and it's copy of my music, and presto, my music played perfectly. So, I would reccomend trying that. Hope this helped!!

  • MBA repeats startup chime but doesn't boot up. Why?

MBA timed out while Applejack was running then shut down and now repeats startup chime but fails to boot up.

And exactly what MBP model do you have? What version of OS X is installed? What version of AppleJack did you use?

  • Why doesn't Terminal "disable start-up chime" command work in Mavericks?

Numerous online articles incidate the following command disables start-up chime sound but in Mavericks 10.9.1 it has no effect:

    Suggestions?

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Why am I not hearing the startup chime?

should I be concerned that the start up chime didn't sound when I turned on my iMac?

If it were set to Mute prior to shutdown, that is
where it remains at the next startup...
So if that doesn't cure it on next boot, to set
the control up or down, or un-mute, post back.
    Good luck!

  • Why won't my iPhone make the chime when I plug it in to the wall???

My iPhone will not chime when I plug it in the wall and it doesn't show the symbol in the right hand corner but it charges. Can somebody please help me figure this problem out? Thanks!!!

Reboot your phone, see if that fixes the problem. Try and power your phone off and then plug it into the charger.

  • Boot chimes sound but the screen stays dark - why?

Our iBook (16 VRAM) 700 has appeared to die. The normal boot chimes sound when the power switch is pressed (but only after a forced quit) but the screen stays dark and no hard drive activity can be heard.
Is this probably the "dreaded logic board video chip problem" I have read about in several places?
If so how do I rescue important files (like my wife's novel)!!! Strip the computer down and pull the hard drive? It was running Panther so there is no Time Machine backup.

Have you tried starting up in Safe Mode? (This probably won't work, but it's worth a try.)
After leaving it sit overnight, does squeezing the case to the left of the trackpad allow you to start up and work for a bit as long as you keep the pressure on it there? If so, you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer in the Apple Discussions iBook G3 (Dual USB) Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.
