Why no native Task Manager

I'm sure others have wondered about this but I'm quite curious why the iPhone has no native task manager. I was just looking at the Blackberry Torch and realized it natively syncs both tasks and notes.
Now, I use Mobileme and it sync's automatically. In fact, it sync's my iMac's calendar and tasks to the Macbook Pro. So if there were a native iPhone task manager, I would see no reason why Mobileme wouldn't update the iPhone.
As it stands, I use Missing Sync for the iPhone to sync tasks and notes. Its a good app and syncs using my wifi. However, this is a two step process. Mobileme is keeping things up to date automatically however I have to remember to sync my tasks and notes to my iPhone. Its kind of just a bit of an annoyance.

Apple, like most companies, typically do not announce why they have made the decisions that they have made.

  • Installed iTunes 11.0.4.4 64-bit but window 8 pro 64-bit in task manager reports that iTunes is 32-bit.  Why?  Not running in compatibility mode.  Uninstalled and reinstalled.  Same result.

Installed iTunes 11.0.4.4 64-bit version.  Now windows 8 pro 64-bit reports iTunes as 32-bit in task manager.  Why?  Both my computer and operating system are 64-bit.  ITunes is not running in compatibility mode.  All my music files are MP3.  I uninstalled iTunes and downloaded iTunes64setup.exe from apple and still having the same result.  This was a clean install by-the-way.

  • Why does FireFox freeze and the only way to unfreeze it is to open the task manager and close the plugin-container.exe file??? It has been happening more and more often and it is getting VERY AGGRAVATING!!!!!

When Firefox does freeze (not responding appears in parentheses in the page tab) I am not able to access any of the webpages (the entire webpage is hidden behind a vaguely white transparent foreground) and more often than not any files I might be downloading are stopped before the entire file has been transferred - which means that I have to start those downloads from the beginning AGAIN. This has been happening for quite some time and I AM SICK AND TIRED OF IT HAPPENING!!
If it continues to happen for much longer I will swear off FireFox FOREVER!!!!! Either a program works or it does not work and lately Firefox has not worked worth a damn...........
The ONLY way to force Firefox to allow me to access it is for me to end the plugin-container.exe file process using Task Manager. Clearing there is a SERIOUS problem here that has not been resolved - why not???

The pluging container opens up unnecessary copies as the cookies/history are cleared, this is a known issue, it might be what you are seeing, and it is hoped to be fixed in some future release of firerox.

  • Firefox won't open until Task Manager is opened, why?

Recently I have noticed a slight problem with my Firefox browser. Upon closing when I attempt to re open (shortcut: ctrl + alt + f), it just sits there. It doesn't even appear to be registering that its trying to open. If I try to open again it does nothing & will only fully open & show the running Firefox windows when I open Task Manager. It doesn't happen all the time although its been an off & on occurrence over the past few days now. Is this happening because of the shortcut key? Or is there another problem why it wont start until Task Manager is opened?

  • Why Do I Get An UAC Prompt When I Start Task Manager From The Desktop?

    Windows 8 Pro X64
In Windows 7 Ultimate x64 if I start Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar and selecting it it starts without any UAC prompt running in my security context.  It is only if I click on show processes from all users that I get an UAC
    prompt for an administrator password.
In Windows 8 Pro x64 I get the UAC prompt when I start Task Manager by right clicking on the taskbar in the Desktop environment.  Why?
    http://www.saberman.com

I think I see why we were having a disconnect earlier when discussing this.  I had some time so I did some more testing and found the following.
Fresh Windows 8 install with a normal user account (non-admin) has NO UAC PROMPT for taskmgr, regedit, etc.  It just opens under the current user context, same as Windows 7 did.
Upgraded Windows 8 from Windows 7 install gives a UAC prompt for taskmgr, etc. under the same situation.  I made sure they were in the same OU with the same policies and the same UAC level.  No prompts!  That's the part that never made sense
to me.  If you can run an app and then use your non-admin credentials at the UAC prompt and it still runs, why did it prompt in the first place?  Makes no sense.  And it turns out that it doesn't look like this is default behavior but something
messed up on the 7-to-8 computers I'm dealing with.
So am I missing some setting or something for Windows 7 to 8 upgrade or is this a bug?
I just started seeing that behavior on a computer that has a fresh installation of windows 8.  For a few weeks after installation, it worked as expected.  Then it started prompting for user credentials when running task manager as a non-admin user.
If I enter the credentials of the user who started it (the non-admin user I'm logged on as) it opens and works as expected.

  • Why can't I go to playback and there are two SE icons in Task Manager?

I'm having several problems after upgrading to SE 3.0.
    1.  Whenever I need to close SE in the Task manager, there are two SE icons under the Applications tab, is this normal?
    2. I had a previous SE installed which was purchased with a USB DAQ device, no more than one year ago.  This error came from one of the old project, that used to work.  The error occurs while trying to RECORD  a waveform using SIGNAL TRIGGER.  Using DAQmx acquire and Configured for N SAMPLES, the program locks up showing "Recording" in the PROJECT window.  If I look at the log file, it continously logs, instead of stopping at my 1 s duration.  This problem resolves when I setup the acquired signal for CONTINUOUS SAMPLES, but it used to work before I upgraded the software.  (The software may have been the same version - it was only 1 year old.)
    3.  Using a project with at least one logged file, SE locks up when I atttemp to go to the PLAYBACK mode.  No error message, just an hour glass and PLAYBACK highlighted.
    Thanks for your help.

    Scott M,
    1)  In task manager there are two Signal Express icons one should be LabVIEW (more square) and one Signal Express (more round).  I am not sure why you are closing signal express via task manager, but if you have to then this is what you are expected to see.
    2) When you have N samples set it will take (Samples to Read / Rate) seconds to complete the task.  It will then close after completeing that but it will not close mid task.  Continous however will simply stop at the time limit you specify.
    3)  Is it any logged file?  How long have you waited?  Is this a new pc?  Can you post screenshots?

  • When firefox crashes from a memory leak why can't you display the offending tab? Enhancement: a task manager like tab manager showing usage per tab / extension.

I typically keep many windows with several tabs open. It is possible that this causes more crashes since the number of pages multiplies any effect most users with less pages/tabs would experience. I have been having problems with Firefox crashing Using the windows task manager I have looked into this issue monitoring lots of variables. Bottom line the crash is caused by increasing memory usage possibly caused by the flash add on which is doing many IO reads on at least one offending page/tab. Could some sites be using flash to read from my disk without permission and there is a memory leak in either flash of the code the sites uses? I have searched the web for a task manager like add-on for Firefox tabs that would allow me to determine the offending page/tab/add-on/extension. It seems like a great idea which has not been implemented. Since I am a developer I would be happy to implement, but would like some guidance since my knowledge of your product is only at the user level.

There is currently about:memory page which is being actively developed. A "task manager"of sorts is also in the works AFAIK. If you want to help out, your best bet is to find the applicable bug in Bugzilla. If you have the coding skills I can help get you in touch with a mentor - just let me know.

  • Why won't Firefox close, even using Task Manager, unless I right click on the process and select 'end process' ?

Firefox works fine, but won't respond when I try to shut it down. Using Task Manager to 'End Task' doesn't work. In Task Manager I have to right click on firefox in the Processes menu and click 'End Task'. Apart from logging off/shutting down, this is the only method that works. Also refused to respond when I tried to reset and doesn't respond to commands to change profile settings.

    SOLUTION (possible).
Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!

  • Why do I have 2, 3, 4 copies of Firefox shown in Windows Task Manager Processes Tab?

After a few days, Firefox will get real slow, has lots of disk activity when opening a new Tab or going to another website. When I look in Task Manager, I'll see as many as 4 instances of Firefox in the Processes Tab. Even if I restart Firefox, some or all of these processes remain and I have to manually stop them to get Firefox back to speed. What is wrong or is it something I'm doing?

    Hello there,
You can test to see whether one of your plugins is causing Firefox to use too much memory by selectively disabling some of them:
    1. Click the menu button and choose Add-ons.
    2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Plugins panel.
    3. Click on a plugin in the list to select it, then select Never Activate to disable it.
Repeat for some of the plugins in your list.
After disabling some of your plugins, close and restart Firefox, and observe its memory usage. If you don't see an improvement, you can enable those plugins again and try with a different set.
If none of the above solutions work then please see: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram
    Hope this helps!

  • TB won't open even though Task Manager says its running. Why?

    Windows 8.1.
TB worked fine 'til few days ago.
Now it won't open even though Task Manager indicates it's running.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Thunderbird without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Thunderbird and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Thunderbird.

  • Why does firefox freeze and then doesn't fully release from memory, but I have to End Process from Task Manager?

Frequently, Firefox for Windows (Vista) freezes up. I click on a link or try to go to another web page and nothing happens. The icon in the tab is just spinning, with Connecting. but it never connects. Then when I close it - if it lets me. I click to open it again and a window pops up saying that Firefox is already running, to please close it before launching it again. I have to go to Task Manager and End task from the Processes tab. It is also a resource hog including the Plug-In Container.

The pluging container opens up unnecessary copies as the cookies/history are cleared, this is a known issue, it might be what you are seeing, and it is hoped to be fixed in some future release of firerox.

  • When I close firefox I attempt to reopen, it wont load...looking in task manager shows it as a process, i need to, end the process to restart firefox, Why?

when I start firefox, then close it..and attempt to restart it, I get a message that its loaded....but its not...but I see it as a process in task manager.I end the process..then start firefox again...........constant problem...............windows 7 system...8gb ram g4bit

    Hi Andis.
First of all, this is completely normal behavior, although it's a bit irritating, I know. What happens is that when you close Firefox, despite the window disappearing right there and then, Firefox keeps running for a little bit until the whole closing procedure is completed. This can take a fraction of a second on fast computers, or can take a few seconds on slow computers or when Firefox is storing a large session (if you save your tabs). All you have to do is wait a bit until Firefox closes, and then open it again.
To see if it's still running, you can press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and then, under the Processes tab, you can see if firefox.exe is still there. If it's taking an unusual amount of time to close (which happens very rarely, and only if the browser freezes on exit), you can force the application to terminate from this application (task manager).
Firefox 4.0 will reduce by 97% the time it takes firefox.exe to close, so this problem will be basically erased for Firefox's next version.
Until then, I can recommend you this extension, which helps you restart your browser more easily and without bothering about closing times:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3559/
    Hopefully this will help.

  • At various websites, I am constantly getting a "Stop Script..." error message. From that point I have to use the task manager to close firefox. Why????!!!!

I realize that websites now have a whole lot of extraneous stuff running, but this is getting ridiculous. This is a powerful pc with a fresh install of windows 7. These damn "stop script" messages are ruining my browsing experience. It gives me two choices, continue or stop, but neither works. I can't get rid of the error message and I can't close firefox. I can't do anything except call up the task manager and end the program. The last time, even after that, the damn website was still playing in the background after firefox had closed, and I had to force a restart on the computer.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over the problem

  • Why do I have to use task manager to close FF after I exit FF?

I use Firefox close it like normal. If I start it again it will not open and I get and error message "firefox working with other program, try closing firefox".
I then open the task manager, end process, Firefox*32.~.
I thought maybe it could have been a plug so I disabled all plug-ins. Restated FF it went to google/FF home page. I closed firefox at the X. Opened the task manager and it was still running in the end process tab.

Use "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit) to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes", try to exclude the clearing the Cookies
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
