Why no PCI Slots 1 & 5 ? ?
A common thread throughout this board is to tell users not to use PCI slots 1 or 5.
I find this perplexing - whats the point of MSI building mobos with 5 slots and then you telling us not to use 2 of them?
Can anybody from MSI give me a good and coherent reason as to why this practise exists and why isn't something done about it to make all 5 slots usable? I just hate paying out for something that is only partly functional!

I don't work for MSI, and no one here does, but I'll offer you what is obvious.
The practice exist because IRQ sharing is as inevitable as death taxes and most people just don't believe it. AGP and PCI-1 share an IRQ on virtually all boards.. Slots 2 and 5 usually share an IRQ as well. Most people therefore hold that slots 2, 3, and 4 are the only ones to use.
The great flaw in that line of reasoning is that on-board periphs also share IRQs with PCI slots. On my Ultra ARU, the NEC USB 2.0 controller shares with slot 3, and on-board RAID shares with slot 4. So like it or not, and no matter what anyone else says, IRQ sharing is taking place no matter what slot combinations are used.
Another GREAT myth is that all 5 (or 6) slots can't be used together. That's bull. Just install windoze with only AGP occupying a slot. Then fill the other slots and load their drivers ONE AT A TIME. I have never had a problem filling every slot on the board doing it that way. My only recommendation is to noy put anything in PCI-1 that makes heavy use of the PCI bus.
Every board I've had for years has used at least 5 slots and I've never had a problem with any of them. Two of the cards I use are very specialized and place far greater demands on PCI bus time than anything a typical PC owner even knows exists. Still, no problem. Just think about bus cycle time (how busy the card is) and you'll see that one of the big parts of making it work is to never have two "busy" cards sharing an IRQ.
A busy card and a lazy card make the best couples.

DIMM1 now read as PCI Slot?
Hey guys, Happy Holidays!
My Board/System is actually running great right now, so this is more of an observation/warning than urgent cry for help. I recently changed from Corsair TWINX 3700 (434) DDR SDRAM to Corsair XMS 3500C2 (417) DDR SDRAM. The resukt was a terrific increase in performance, stability, and especially OC (210@1:1 to 223@1:1 PAT Turbo). However I was flying so high cuz of the big OC that I got greedt and tried to boot with 220FSB and use Clock Generator to get more. It worked! Until I hit 227FSB where I had a hard crash. This probably is wehat killed my Promise RAID ), and also made DIMM1 no longer readable as full! In fact it reads in Sandra, AIDA32, SMBIOS viewers, Windows info etc. as a PCI Slot. I moved my RAM to DIMMs 2&4 and all is good (I hope). Any thoughts, comments, jokes at my expense ? It may just be the SMBIOS being the way it sometimes is but, food for thought...Actually, all of my various utilities, including the Tool House USA diagnostic suite, seem to have reestablished accurate reads of the MOBO. SANDRA 2004 however, still claims that I have DIMM4 occupied w/ 512 DIMM3 empty DIMM2 occupied w/ 512 and PCI Slot empty.
Could I have actually screwed up so badly that I shifted signals or current signatures (these are just terms I am using in an attempt to sound competent). :hypecrite: I gotta tell you man, at this point even if the bloody thing is planning on blowing u and taking me with it, I still do not want to give up on it! I shudder to think of the possibility of starting over w/ another board. And even though I am quite fond enough of my fast little "Neo", I do not think I could justify replacing it with a second. There just seem to be MOBOS which are better buys considering we are now in possession of all the facts we did not have access to 6 months ago. By the way, my system is absolutely flyin, and far from displaying any signs of instability, it has actually stopped the little problems it had untill the Promise RAID went kaput!. My UPS no longer gives config errors in the Event Viewer. My games, 321 X-Copy, IE6, and backup programs are just ripping along like never before. One other note (I thought I had stated this earlier, sorry) I had Norton Ghost 2003 installed for use w/ an IDE Drive which I would fill with important data, backups etc.. In other words, even though the Symantec people told me it was safe, I was just too suspicious of the imaging process with a striped array. I did use it once a while back (on the Intel ICH5R RAID, never Promise) before I had gained anything even remotely related to a clue but everything worked fine, and I have since even established the DVD-RW image integrity.
Sorry dude, I cannot seem to make my posts concise. I hope you understand that I am not yet totally comfortable with either the subject matter, nor the medium Which is why this post is somewhat redundant in light of your last post. Thanks for your time, and the positive news.

Try new pci slot --- crash wind
I was having issues with the driver installer not detecting my SB2 Platinum in windows XP. I tried moving the card to a new slot and now when I boot windows it only works for about 90 seconds before I get a hard crash, as if I had pressed the reset button, every time I boot. The card works fine in ubuntu linux. Something is going on in windows after moving the card to a new PCI slot, as reccomended to remedy the driver installer issue.
I have tried both the CD installer and the downloaded drivers and there is no way to get either to work. The card worked for years in this computer and now it won't play nice with windows after a fresh install.

Why is one slot saying 2.5gt/s and the other 5.0gt/s?
Hello,
I have a 2008 mac pro with 3.0 Ghz Harpertown processors. I thought these 2008 mac pros had two PCIe 2.0 slots, but yet according to my system profiler.. one slot is reporting at 5.0 and the other is 2.5 - what gives?

Shouldn't both slot 1 and 2 be PCIe 2.0?? Why is one being reported as 1.1 and the other is being reported as 2.0? Is there something wrong with my PCIe slot?? I am saddened to hear this as I traded up my 2006 mac pro and now I see that i am not getting 2 x PCIe 2.0 slots as reported.DpArt,
Are you sure that is what the problem is? When I get home from work tonite, I will try to swap the cards and see. Originally, my harpertown mac shipped with the ATI Radeon 2600 XT, a very mediocre card and its in slot 2 reporting 5.0, while the ATI Radeon 4870 is a 1GB slightly overclocked(applemacanix) flashed card and its in slot 1 reported as 2.5 which I am hoping that this is an oversight and not a mechanical failure or problem with my pcie slot. -
Do I need a PCI slot that is a bus master to use DMA transfers?
I want to install 3 PCI-6534, 1 PCI-6602, 1 PCI-6115 S board in a Industrial PC with a single board computer. Do all the PCI slots need to support "bus mastering" to us the DMA of all the boards?
Hi Chris,
Yes all the PCI slots must support bus mastering. That is the only way for our cards to take control and transfer data via DMA. Most PCs (including industrial PCs with PCI-to-PCI bridges) support bus mastering on all slots. If bus mastering happens to be disabled, here are some steps to change that in the bios:
1. Reboot your computer. Watch for the message during reboot that instructs you on how to enter the BIOS/Setup. Some systems have these messages disabled, so you may need to check your computer's user manual for the keys to hit. Most computers use a function key (e.g., F1, F2, or F10), but it depends on the system.
2. Once you enter the BIOS/Setup, look for an menu or option that will allow you to view settings for the PCI Bus. Typi
cal menus will have names like "Advanced" or "Computer Setup". Some systems do not give you access to the settings for the PCI Bus, so if you do not see anything, check with your computer manufacturer for assistance.
3. Look for an option to "Enable Bus Mastering" and select it.
4. Save your setting and exit.
I've also included some links to other helpful knowledge bases and a tutorial I found on the subject.

Does it matter which PCIe slot is used for single video card?
Board:P55 GD-65
Card: GTX 260Quote
The manual for his board is a bit confusing on this matter.
Actually, it isn't. It (only) mentions the two possible operating modes: (x16/x0 and x8/x8 (bifurcated mode)). If you look at the specifications on the product page, the same is true:
http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=prodmbspec&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1846
Quote
PCI-E Gen Gen2 (1x16, 1x8)
However, what the board specifications and the manual state is of secondary importance (even though there is nothing wrong with the information). The PCI-Express interface is provided by the processor alone and it is the design of the CPU that desides about the possible ways of lane assignment.
We had this discussion before, so let me just quote the relevant information I already posted there:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=137305.msg1036301#msg1036301
Quote
However, what you guys actually have to look at are what Intel has to say about this in the Processor Specifications:
http://download.intel.com/design/processor/datashts/322164.pdf
Have a look at page 27: "PCI Express* Bifurcated Mode":
Quote
When bifurcated, the signals which had previously been assigned to lanes 15:8 of the
single x16 Primary port are reassigned to lanes 7:0 of the x8 Secondary port.
The two PCI-Express Ports are tied directly to the processor. Of course, both are x16 ports in size, but not in terms of bandwidth. From the point of view of the processor, the primary port is a true x16 port (size & bandwidth). However, the secondary port is only a x8 port (bandwidth), that is why Intel labels it as "x8 Secondary port". There is no way the secondary port will ever be able to get more than x8 lanes assigned to it.
This has nothing to do with the mainboard, but with how the CPU manages the bifurcation of the PCI-E lanes. There are only 16 lines of which only 8 can be reassigned to the secondary port.
The CPU's PCI-Express switching logic is not designed to re-assign all x16 lanes to the secondary port. There is only one switch available: x16/x0 or x8/x8. No other operating modes are possible. That means, whenever there is a device in the secondary port, it will get x8 lanes or none at all.
Quote
nothing was mentioned about the CPU limitation.
The CPU hosts the PCI-Express controller. That means the whole lane assignment logic (naturally) depends primarely on the CPU.
Quote
It would be interesting to see & verify what the bandwidth actually reads when just one card is placed in the PCI-E5 slot only.
It will get x8 lanes assigned to it, not one more.
Quote
We know it certainly can't be 'x0' with one card, but if not using two cards, the 'Auto Arrange' to force x8 in the PCI-E5 slot runs x8 regardless?
Yep.
Quote
The CPU as you mentioned Jack, is the only limiting factor then? Otherwise the board itself could run the PCI-E5 at x16?
The CPU is the deciding factor here. I would not call it a "limiting" factor. The board itself cannot to anything in this matter because its chipset does not provide a PCI-E interface to begin with (well, at least not the kind we need). -
A68HM-E33 wont boot if any card in PCI slot
Put together a system with an A68HM-E33 board. A4-5300, 4Gb Kingston HyperX, 120Gb Intel SSD, Win7 x64. Got it all running fine. Went to install a PCI (not PCIe) wifi card. System will not post, gives 8 beeps, no BIOS splash screen.
Remove PCI wifi card, system boots normally. Tried a PCI ethernet card, same thing, won't boot.
Why would a card in the PCI slot stop the system from booting?
Samhave you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?

Changing PCI slots...of a card...?
If I load a driver it works fine. When i poweroff and change slot should I have to reload the driver.
Why is minor device getting created only at add_drv, even though the driver is loaded after change of slot only add_drv really does it.
Thanx in advance.run

should be created (unless there are bug in the pci driver). -
Matching a PCIe graphics card w/ proper PCIe slot question.
Hi all,
By all i mean Harm and Jim - the hardware wizards! One more hardware question....
In comparing two Supermicro mb's, the X8SAX and the X8STE, i noticed that the X8SAX has two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots while the X8STE has one x8 PCIe 2.0 in a x16 slot.
So... my question is... If i'm going to use a high end graphics card like the GTX 260 or a lower end Geforce 9500 GT, buying the X8STE mb would be a mistake because both cards are x16 and putting them in the x8 using a x16 slot would degrade the speed in half - correct?Harm,
Of the Supermicro i7 single socket mb's, the X8STE would have been ideal with 1-x16PCIe, 3-x4PCIe and 2-PCI slots if the x16PCIe slot had 16 lanes and the mb had no graphics. Also, With the X8SAX, if you are using double wide graphic card, you are covering up a PCIe slot leaving you with ony one more on the mb.
But why use two video cards? What is the value added?
I like many editor's, I use dual monitors during the video production process so i can see Pr, Ps, Ae or Sb at the same time. I find it more productive and convenient. I have been toying with the idea of getting a third monitor. But with this mb, it would leave me with no usable slots other than the two 64bit PCI-X slots.
Although Supermicro mb's are great, I own an older dual Xeon NLE system, they just don't any boards - currently - that satisfy me. Both boards leave you wanting a little. But I would agree with you that the X8SAX is still the better choice.
In any case, would you agree that putting an x16PCIe graphics card in the X8STE with only 8 lanes in the x16PCIe slot would have been a waste?
Just for curiosity, what Supermicro single i7 mb would you have chosen? -
NVidia 6800GT & PCI Slots - Keeping Things Cool & Copacetic
Hi Gang
Fully aware of heating issues, especially with Pre-Dual Core G5's and poorly cooled ATI Video Cards, I'm trying the following arrangment with my G5 2.0 Dual Core;
Need to take advantage of all PCI slots, but using NVidia 6800 GT, (with decent cooling), I put a FirmTek eSATA card in the middle 8X PCI slot, and Sonnet FW800 Cards above and below the FirmTek eSata card.
Took temperature reading of nVidia at start-up; 118 Degrees Fahrenheit. After about an hour, it went up to 129 Degrees Fahrenheit. Warm but not Hot to the touch. I'm optimistic ...
Why no 'internal' SATA Card approach? Because I don't like the drive rack arrangment which clearly obstructs the cooling fans. Got some great advice here from BD, and japamac. I think this was the way to go
Thanks for looking;

Sounds like you are happy with your results?
Temps aren't bad at all, and now you have tons of external connections!
BTW, Nvidia used a Coolermaster heatsink/fan for the graphics card.
Nice to have a cooling specialist on the job. -
Orange pci slot (communication slot) questions?
i have a msi k8n neo platinum rev.1 motherboard that has a orange pci slot (states in manual that this slot was designed for msi pci wifi cards). i just purchased the msi dual net pci card (red pcb board not the green pcb board one - if there is a difference?) and used that orange slot (pci slot 5) and all is well (device recognized by windows, driver/software installed fine, etc....). problem is, when i shutdown pc, my cdburner activity light and hard drive activity light stays on with pc shutdown. when pc is running and such, the lights turn on as usuall. this only happens when the pc is off. is this normal?
i put the card in pci slot 4 and this issue didnt happen. so card isnt bad or anything. confused on why putting this card in pci slot that was intended for causes some sort of activity light short.Could be some wake up LAN thing on the orage slot. Computer in ready mode or something???
I use a wifi card in the orage slot in mine , but it's not the dual one -
PCI slot in Thinkpad Dock II unusable
Hello, I have a Thinkpad a22m 2628-S1U which can be used with the Thinkpad Dock II. To avoid feeling tempted to buy a new laptop I bought that dock as well as an ATI Radeon x1550 to put in its PCI slot. These items were said to be compatible on http://thinkwiki.org the Linux thinkpad wiki.
Now that I've tried it out, I'm starting to think the contributors to that site were windows users who didn't read the topic. Starting up docked gave the following lspci output (notice there's no radeon card):

I've tried multiple options in the BIOS. You can select AGP or PCI as the card for the root display device. The default is PCI so if there's a docked PCI card at POST, the BIOS will use that for the root display device... otherwise it will use the built in card. You can also select the root display device as LCD or CRT or both. The default is CRT so if there is an external monitor that's where the bootloader menu and such will appear, otherwise the laptop's own display gets used. Even if I've understood these incorrectly, all combinations yield a PCI video card that is not detected by lspci.
I've also tried loading the module dock right after thinkpad_acpi. It loads and appears in lsmod but it doesn't help the situation at all. It also doesn't add a dock file to /proc/acpi/ibm. I also tried passing pci=routirq to the kernel, whatever that does and I've tried changing the four PCI related IRQ numbers in the BIOS and this has not helped.I did upgrade the kernel yesterday and it caused the syntax of dmesg to change somewhat. Here is a docked dmesg from 2.6.27:

The strangest thing has also happened recently. The laptop refuses to use its own display when starting up in the dock unless an external monitor is plugged in. If a CRT is plugged in, the docked laptop starts up and shows the splash screen on its LCD. If no CRT is plugged in, turning on the docked laptop results in a blank screen. This might have happened because I fiddled with the BIOS which would make alot of sense but resetting the BIOS to default configuration hasn't fixed the problem. I also could have broken a pin but the last thing I remember doing before this happened is running cat /sys/module/snd_ac97_codec/parameters/power_save. It's one of those untouchable virtual files that causes a kernel oops when I try to read it sometimes. I have no idea how this would break the dock but it doesn't matter. Even if using the dock requires some external monitor jazz, I still want the card to be detected and it isn't.
Sorry to bombard you with obscure information but I don't know where else to turn. I've asked on the thinkpad mailing list and IRC channel to no response and I've seen one other "knowledgeable person" mention these errors on the LKML. I will subscribe to that and ask him too. I'm just very surprised... this gave me the impression that what I wanted to do would work trivially and automatically on Linux and now I'm finding that it's broken for me and possibly every other Linux user. I will seek out thinkpad users from around here with all types of models and distros and see if they have any luck. So far Arch, Arch install CD and an ancient Ubuntu install CD don't work here. If anyone has this and can test it or can decipher some ideas from the posted output (new kernel parameters, new kernel config flags, new udev rules, new modules?) I'd really appreciate it. -
Z97 Gaming 5 PCIe slots empty?
New build and mobo has never detected any graphics cards. I have flashed the bios and now have latest versions of bios (1.9) and me (9.1.25.1005), cleared CMOS and reset bios defaults but still no joy, PCIe slots still show as empty.
Anyone else had this issue?have you done this? if yes what are the results?

have you attached all power cables to the video card?
and have you connected monitor cable to it? -
I have only 3 slots of PCI or 4 slots of ISA bus, I want to configure with the minimum possible modules to attain 128 channels of DIO and 128 channels of analog output. This is inturn fed to the PCM (Pulse code Modulator). The cards will be placed in industrial PC.
Associate Engineer-Marketing,
Using just those 3 PCI slots you're not going to be able to get the 128 analog output channels. You will probably want to go either the MXI-3 (PCI bus extender) to a PXI chassis or E Series DAQ card to a SCXI chassis for such a high channel count system. Which analog output cards and which digital I/O cards you will want depends on your application. You will have to decide whether you will need static or dynamic analog output as well as whether you need clocked digital I/O or not. I highly recommend contacting our internal sales department at 1-800-433-3488. They are great at helping specify systems.

Won't really see a video card in the PCI slots
I have a G4 MDD 1.23 GHz. I have a 32 MB video card in the AGP slot, but I also have 2 PCI 128 MB video cards lying around.
Every time I try to throw a PCI video card in, though, I have problems. The image is only 640 x 480 grayscale, nothing else. I tried to change the settings, but those are the only options.
I have a 3DFX Voodoo 2 and a TwinTurbo 128. Do I need drivers? Does the MDD not support video cards in the PCI slots? What's wrong with this picture? For what it's worth, here's a few quotes:
[IX Micro Twin Turbo 128 video card, and I understand that OS X does not like that particular card|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg43189.html]
[The TwinTurbo cards are no longer supported by OS X (10.3).|http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-30258.html]
[Just think of this along the lines of 3dfx's unsupport for the Voodoo3 on Macs.|http://www.insidemacgames.com/news/story.php?ArticleID=4213]
[Voodoo is not supported with OSX...but forget it for Jaguar and most other versions|http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02720 .html]
