Why no preferences?

I'm setting up a new Mac Pro for video editing and find I am unable to access preferences in Garage Band 3.0.0 (72).
I've tried the keyboard shortcut and menu. I've tried with two user accounts; one admin, one not. No response from GB.
Also I have two jam packs installed, world music and remix tools.
Any ideas why?

the one time i heard of this problem, it was because the person didn't have a project open.

  • HT2490 why system preferences can't be found?

i try to click on system preferences but i t dont do anything

    Two possibilities.
Either it got deleted from the Applications or Applications -> Utilities folder, or you accidentally damaged your Launchservices cache.  System cache cleaning utilities can do that.   The worst is MacKeeper, and removing it requires third party directions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
Do not use system cache cleaning utilities on a system that isn't backed up.
If you find System Preferences can't be found with one of the utilities on the bottom of this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
http://www.charlessoft.com/ Pacifist can extract it from your 10.5 installer disc (if you are running 10.5).
Once you extract it and put it in the right folder, run the 10.5.8 combo update from:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you are running 10.6, obviously use the 10.6.8 combo update:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Since you posted in the 10.6 forum, but have a signature that says you are running 10.5.8, it is hard to know which link to give you.  Always make sure you post in the correct forum for your operating system, and update your signature if needed.

I read up on the info offered  here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US and used the Terminal Sudo:

  • Why is deleting preferences neccessary to prevent crashes?

Granted, I am relatively new to using Lightroom. I participated in the LR2 beta, provided suggestions in the adobe labs forum and am currently using the trail version of LR2. While reading a message in this forum, several comments were made regarding the deletion of preferences while trying to figure out why the persons machine kept freezing up on him. Could someone please explain why deleting preferences is necessary, and provide what steps to take to do so.
So far, LR2 is working great and I look forward to using it. I would just like to know if I need to delete preferences before I run into trouble.
Thanks, in advance, for your responses.
    Regards, JML

The presences trashing is a troubleshooting step if you are having severe stability issues. Lightroom should _NOT_ be crashing on a regular basis, but if it DOES crash, the odds are pretty good the preferences can become corrupted by the crash (or that the crash might be caused by corrupted preferences). So, this is a very specific step to take if you have or are crashing. Not something you need to do on a regular basis.
As for how to troubleshoot crashes and hangs,, it depends on you OS. Check the FAQS, in particular
Troubleshoot system errors or freezes in Photoshop Lightroom. It deals with Lightroom 1.x but the locations of the preferences are the samejust substitute Lightroom 2 for the original Lightroom name of the prefs.

  • System Preferences opens to a blank, white window

I erased my drive when I set up a Dual 2.7GHz G5 tower for sale, and installed Leopard. Updated to 10.5.4. Then found that when I open System Preferences, I get a blank white window. I can go to the dock item and click to select a particular tab, but it only changes the window size. It is still all white.
The menu bar items also display only white. Any ideas??? I'm stumped. Also sold the G5, so must get it fixed ASAP.

I don't know if this will help: it used to work well in 10.3 and earlier, and quite often in 10.4.
Strange behaviour by System Preferences can often be fixed by trashing com.apple.preferencepanes.cache in Home > Library > Caches folder. Trash com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache as well if you have it.
If this alone doesn't fix things after a logout/login, then trash them again (because it will have regenerated more bad files), together with com.apple.systempreferences.plist in Home > Library > Preferences folder, and in the Home > Library > Preferences > ByHost folder, the files com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxxx.plist, where xxxxxx = a hexadecimal numeric string.
You need to log out and log back in again for this to have any effect (or restart if you prefer).
If none of this helps, you will need to look in your log files to find out why your preference panes are not opening: the simplest way to do this is to use Console.
Open the Console application from /Applications/Utilities. It will default to showing the "Console Messages" and possibly the "system.log". Use the File menu if necessary to get both these logs open, and use the Broom tool to Clear both windows.
Now try to open System Preferences and see what appears in either of these windows. Copy and paste it here.
You may see a message saying "Crash report written to <pathname of crash.log>". If so, click on the "Logs" icon at the top left in the tool bar (preferably in another window). Then, depending on the <pathname of crash.log> in your message, look under either ~/Library/Logs or /Library/Logs by clicking the disclosure triangle, then click the disclosure triangle for "CrashReporter".
Find the crash log corresponding to your message and select it. It will open at the end of the log. Look back for the last line of asterisks in the log, then post everything after that to the end of the log.

  • Cannot use iPhoto library to set background in System Preferences

I'm unable to set any photos from my iPhoto library as a desktop background using System Preferences. When I select a photo, it appears in the little preview window, but the desktop itself just turns blue.
The Choose Folder option works fine, and I can also set a new background picture from within iPhoto. Any idea why System Preferences can't properly access the iPhoto library?
    Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem!!

  • IPhoto having Photo Stream preference amnesia

    Act I, Scene I
    Open iPhoto
iPhoto to me: (Splash screen) Would you like to use Photo Stream?
Me: Yes, by golly, I would.
(Having enabled on other devices, Photo Stream begins synching as advertised. All is well. )
    Act I, Scene II
Hark! A restart is required for some other mundane reason.
    Open iPhoto
iPhoto to me: (Splash screen) Would you like to use Photo Stream?
Me: Yes, by golly, I would. (Thinking to self, I told you that already- why don't you remember? Was our love so fleeting?)
(Having enabled on other devices, Photo Stream begins synching as advertised. All is well. )
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat until I break down and visit these forums.
    Observations:
Only happens on restart - not quitting application.
Preferences menu is triple disco- all three check boxes checked.
Any ideas why my preference to use Photo Stream are forgotten?

This has happened to me many times.  iPhoto seems to forget that I had already checked all boxes, as you had above.  Running same iPhoto version and Mac OS X version as you.  I look forward to a solution for both of us.  Frustrating when I have so many photos in my stream (max 1000, often the max).

  • Garageband  Preferences stuck on built in audio

Dopes anyone know why Garageband preferences get stuck on "built in audio".? It seems to be a common problem. I can record my guitar from the line in port on the back of my IMAC G5, however the preferences remain at 'built in' even though the guitar is recordable. I also think that my preferencces being stuck on 'built in' may be giving me problems using a MIDI interface into my USB port. Does GB preferences have a drop down menu to include UBb? I have never seen anything elese except "built in audio". I am a Newbie to this, so any help from the more experienced would be greatly appreciated.

Dopes anyone know why Garageband preferences get stuck on "built in audio".
    Dopes? Heh heh
Unless you have an Audio interface plugged in to your Mac, there's nothing else to select BUT Built-In Audio
I can record my guitar from the line in port on the back of my IMAC G5, however the preferences remain at 'built in' even though the guitar is recordable.
This is how it should be, as noted above.
    To use the Line-In:

I also think that my preferences being stuck on 'built in' may be giving me problems using a MIDI interface into my USB port.
No, that's not it, MIDI is not Audio.
Does GB preferences have a drop down menu to include UBb?
No, GB should automatically detect a USB MIDI device when it is plugged in.
Once you plug it in and turn it on, you should get a message from GB telling you that it sees a MIDI device. You don't?

  • Why doesn't iTunes auto update to 10.6.1?

Apple Software Update informs me of the above update and I click install.
After a while the install gives the error:
"Errors occurred while installing updates. If the problem persists, choose Tools>Download only and try installing manually".
The fact that the iTunes menu does not include "Tools" seems to escape whoever wrote the script.
Repaired Apple Software Update in Add/Remove programmes and tried again - same result.
I can only assume there is a problem with this update and do not want to try the manual option.
    Anybody else seeing this?

Seems I may have found the problem.
I looked in Services and saw that I had set Apple Mobile Device to disabled.
Reset it to manual and started it. Ran ASU again and 10.6.1 installed OK.
The reason I set Apple Mobile Device to disabled is because I DON'T HAVE AN APPLE MOBILE DEVICE!!
I don't have an iPod either but iPod service always runs on start up even though it's told not to synch with anything. iTunes Helper is another unwanted start up item but at least that can be removed.
This unwanted start up junk is a pain, that's why I stop it.
I assume other people may have done the same thing but why settings preferences should cause problems with updating I don't know.

Under Security in System Preferences, when I click on Security I get the message "Preferences Error - Could not load Security".
This may be related to another problem I see. If I go into Accounts > Login Options, when I try to uncheck "Automatically log in", the window hangs.
    Any ideas?

  • Preference system doen't work. Have to force it to quite

why does preference system don't respond ?

    No problem!
Okay, I believe what you read would be to delete this preference file:
(From your last post, I assume you do know how to get to that folder?)
Move this .plist to the desktop, log out and back in (or restart) and see if it works now. Deleting the .plist may change some settings you have changed from the default settings, so you may have to go through and check other Panes - it will create a new .plist automatically.

  • Preference system, preference system

why my preference system is crashin!?

Do you have 3rd party preferences in your System Prefernces.
If you start your Mac in "Safe Mode" (boot while holding the "Shift" key) does your System Preferences still crash?  If it works properly, then there is a good chance a 3rd party system prefences is causing the problem.

  • Images too dark? colorsync issue or corruption?

I am not sure if this is related to Aperture, or not, but it is impacting the quality of my experience in Aperture...
I have noticed that my MBP2007 display profile seems too dark, and I think there is some preference or application that is loading at startup that is interfering with it. I am using the default LCD profile for the MBP, and have made sure there are no other profiles selected (selecting other profiles does not appear to change the results in any positive way).
Here is what I have observed: I noticed in Aperture that all my images seemed to need correction for being too dark. This is strange, since my Nikon seems to be taking perfectly balanced photos. So I started to dig around and remove all preferences that were associated with any color application I have used. I restarted and noticed that when the desktop image first appeared (a photo I had taken) it looked like it had the correct tonal range. Also, all the images in Aperture looked correct! However, this was short lived, and now each time when I restart, the process starts the same way, with the image appearing correctly at first, but then, as the menu bar started to appear, the image suddenly became too dark, as though a profile had just been applied! I have looked at the Console log, but cannot see anything that looks suspicious in terms of something that may be loading and interfering with the profile. I have tried to delete colorsync preferences, but have not been able to correct the issue again! Any ideas? I am really stumped by this!
    Thanks for any help!

Hmm ... interesting. The ICC type MNTR Monitor profile for the display should be shown in the Devices section of the Apple ColorSync Utility.
A generic ICC profile for the make and model of display is shown as Factory Profile and a measured ICC profile for the specific calibration state of the display is shown as Current Profile.
The ICC MNTR profile shown in Apple ColorSync Utility > Devices > Display > Current Profile should be the same as the one shown in System Preferences > Display > Color.
Apple ColorSync 2.5 introduced the VCGT Video Card Gamma Tag that sets the state of the video system to the state described in the measured profile.
This was - and is - intended to do away with the difficulties caused by competing gamma utilities e.g. Knoll Gamma for Photoshop that tried to take control of the video system on startup.
(selecting other profiles does not appear to change the results in any positive way).
The intention of some who were involved in the ICC architecture was that working space profiles would by type SPAC Color Space, but then Apple and Adobe wanted type MNTR Monitor profiles to do this job.
This produced the problem that type MNTR Monitor profiles have to do double duty, both as monitor profiles in which equal amounts of RGB do not produce gray and as working space profiles in which equal amounts of RGB do produce gray.
So, this is why System Preferences > Display > Color shows both measured monitor profiles and monitor profiles for RGB working spaces such as sRGB, eciRGB, adobeRGB and so on and so forth. If you click a profile that is not your measured monitor profile, you reset the video system.
Instead of resetting the video system, as you may be doing, install a good ICC profiling packing, calibrate your monitor, and characterise that state in a monitor profile that will be automatically installed by your ICC profiling package.
Not all problems are configuration problems, some are bugs too, but if one has a sense of what the different dialogues do and how they are supposed to work together then problems produced by system misconfiguration can at least be eliminated in troubleshooting.

  • No playback to external monitor Premiere CC

    Hello all ~
Mid-job (and of course now that I need to color correct), PP CC has stopped exporting video to my external monitor.  I have tried trashing prefs (holding Shift+Opt at start-up) and it doesn't do the trick.  In looking around, I've noticed people having this problem when using some BlackMagic cards, but my monitor is plugged directly into the Thunderbolt connector of my MacBook Pro. I've enclosed my Playback settings.
Oddly enough, when I fire up my old copy of PP CS6 it plays back to my external monitor just fine.
I've had had enough late-night edits that I may have inadvertently initiated some keystroke that changed a setting, but I can't think of what that would be or why a Preference Trash wouldn't reset it.   Any help greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

Well, after much poking and prodding I found out what happened and how to fix it.  If you look at the picture below, you can see that there is a row of razor-thin pixels pushing into my external monitor.  So basically what happened was that I resized the window and thought that I had dragged it completely onto my main monitor, but my Program Monitor and Timeline were still ever-so-slightly overlapping onto my external monitor.  When I moved them fully onto my main monitor, the video on my external monitor reappeared.
HOWEVER ( ! ), this does beg the question of why this problem remained as I did reset my editing workspace, I did trash preferences and I did do a complete uninstall/reinstall of PP CC... and still had the same problem.  Shouldn't  any one of those processes have put things back to where they were supposed to be? Where are these residual settings being stored, and how can you get rid of them if even a complete reinstall won't do the trick?
Would have saved a lot of time if they had worked as advertised.  Happy to be up and running (and color correcting) though and hope this can help others who might be having the same problem.
