Why no Quad Core option on T510? How about USB 3?

I've been waiting for the T510 for some time now as my refresh cycle is up.
However, my hard requirements are:
- FHD 1080p display (check - but option cost is unreasonable)
- Quad Core (fail - at least a 7i 720QM)
- USB 3.0 (fail)
Lenovo - please get your act together and match at least mid class laptop specs of the competition such as the Dell Studio series. I must replace my ThinkPad in the next 3 months but you make it impossible to stick with your brand.

Yep you're lookign for a W510.

  • No docking avai, how about USB 3.0 Hub + Displaylink adapters?

Tired of waiting for those docking stations for rMBP. What if I put these behind my two 24" 1920x1200 monitors? A "docking solution" with one USB cable.

  • No more quad core?!?!?

OMG. I have been waiting 2 years for an update to the Mac mini, only to find that their highest end model will still likely be less powerful than the one I've got. The Mac mini is (or used to be) an awesome alternative to the all-in-one iMac or the super powerful (and expensive) Mac Pro. But come on — no quad core option? Why would you cripple the mini like that? I don't want an all-in-one. I like separate components (ever have to lug an entire iMac to an Apple Store when the problem is just the motherboard?). This is a major blow. I am severely disappointed, and definitely not buying a new Mac mini.

I totally agree with the original poster.
After 2 years with no update, these new Mac Minis are a major disappointment to anyone who has used the previous models. What is Apple thinking? Last week, £649 would buy a Quad-Core i7 and this week £799 (£150 more) buys you a Dual-Core i7!?!?!
Also, before anyone posts anything to do with speed tests, it's not just about how fast these newer Minis are (or aren't) compared with the 2012 models. It's about load distribution over multiple cores and the lack of Hyper-Threading, which (correct me if I'm wrong) requires the i7 chip to have four cores, to get another virtual sub cores on top.
As a user of Apples Logic Pro X, it's performance is greatly enhanced when it can distribute it's audio engine over multiple cores - using the Quad-Core i7 2012 model - Logic shows eight cores, which is fantastic for a machine that (previously) cost £649.
What would it cost me to get equal or better performance now?
    £1,359 for a build-to-order 21.5-inch iMac
£1,599 for an entry-level 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro (or more on a build-to-order)
    £1,789 for a build-to-order 27-inch iMac
£1,999 for a top range 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro (or more on a build-to-order)
£2,499 for an entry-level Mac Pro (or more on a build-to-order)
This is unacceptable. Apple aren't trying to offer Mac Mini users the ability to stay within Mini range, as they seem intent on forcing users to switch to a different product line, which (if they cannot afford it), could ultimately make them switch altogether to a PC.
I truly hope that if the Mac Mini line does continue into the future, that Apple will regain the common sense to listen to their end users. I've been a Mac user since 1992 and would never think of switching, but this is truly an epic mistake in Apples design decisions and one I hope they fix, sooner rather than later.

  • Quad-Core i5 or i7?

I am buying a new 27" Mac and would like some guidance on the benefit (or lack of) the two quad-core options.
I just would like a rather simple explanation re: iMovie editing (for instance) as to whether paying an extra $250.00 for the i7 processor is worth the money.
How will I (no geek, here) notice the difference in the overall performance between the two options?
How would you build a new Mac if you were buying one today?

do you notice the difference between 15 and 18secs in real-life?
in iMovie, you'll notice no difference,

actually bought a MacMini - 'fast' enough.
if wallet is bigger: a 27"/4GB iMac (I don't care for processors), a TimeCapsule for backup, a firewire-connected 1 TB harddrive as 'mass storage'.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

  • Why apple doesn't make Quad-Core processor available on 13 inches display of MacBook Pro Retina dispay?

I am on budget but doesn't mind upgrade my order with i7 processor on MacBook Pro 13' but seriously wonder why quad-core was not an option?

no one here as any idea why apple does what they do.

  • Options for video card upgrade to quad-core G5?

What are my options? I bought the powermac quad-core G5 with the base video card (geoforce 6600); now I want to upgrade, but it seems that one cannot buy the other video cards (e.g. geoforce 7800 or quadro fx 4500) on their own, but only as a package with a new powermac. Do I have any options? The ATI X800 looks great but it is an AGP card and the pmac is PCI

So far I didn't get a card from Apple to upgrade.:-(
But on the Aperturetricks website, Scott says, that I got an upgrade.
    Don't know how.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core 1GBRAM, how much more RAM and HOW?

I just got my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core, and I had a budget so I left the RAM down @ only 1GB because I knew I could upgrade it later. Well later is here & I want to put more in it, but I hear it is a little more complicated than the sensless shoving of big ram chips into empty slots...
I am a heavy user of Logic 7, soon to be of Logic Studio, and hopefully I will be using AutoCAD at home soon (for school). How much RAM would be optimal for me to eventually have? Right now I think I can afford to purchase 2GB more, but I dont know how exactly to put it into my machine. Right now it has a 512MB per xeon.
    Can anyone help me out?

    I just pulled out 1GB (2 x 512MB) simms in replaced them with 4GB (2 x 2GB) simms.
I had added more memory as 2 GB (1x2GB) and ran out of space. Now I have a total of 11GB RAM:
    1GB = 2 x 512MB
    2GB = 2 x 1GB
    8GB = 4 x 2GB
Leaving me with 2x512MB simms sitting in the box on the self. Sure wish I knew someone local I could give these things to for a reasonable price. Anyway, I wouldn't go any higher than 2GB simms (4GB) as that seems to currently have the best price/space ratio. Crucial is good enough and order it from NewEgg.com or MacConnection.com and you'll get a good price (I got mine at MacConnection.com).

  • Can someone tell me how to fix this error in 10.4.11 on a G5 Quad Core 2.5GHz Tower...A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]

Can someone tell me how to fix this error in 10.4.11 on a G5 Quad Core 2.5GHz Tower...A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]

That's an error reported from DVD Player I believe...
kDVDErrorMissingGraphicsDevice = -70017, // A valid graphics device is not available.
There's some conjecture it has to do with HDCP, or Video Card problems, but the only 2 cures/fixes I found were Software related, one was cured by updating the OS, another by replacing the Video kexts.
I think this error also shows up if trying to use DVD player in Safe Mode, (too much research isn't good! ).

Can't think of much to try at the moment, but perhaps reapplying the big 10.4.11 combo, Repair Permissions, & reboot would help, not sure.

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
Try trashing them in Safe Mode, reply if that doesn't help.

  • How do I transfer contents of hard drive on PPC iMac G4 to a new quad-core Intel Core i5

Although my PPC iMac G4 still works OK, I am beginning to realise the time has probably come to get a current model in order to keep up with all the advances that have happened since I bought it about 8 years ago: I will probably get the new quad-core Intel Core i5.
As this will only be my second computer, I am wondering how I can transfer all the stuff on my hard drive onto a new computer and how easy it will be,given the apparently outdated connections on my G4 like USB 1,and possibly other things I don't know about.I am running 10.4.11.
              Any tips gratefully received.

As Allen indicates, Setup Assistant appears automatically, since you do have firewire, the transfer should be speedy, depending on how much data are on the G4.  The firewire on your G4 is FW400, your new Mac has FW800, but you can get an inexensive adaptor that will allow the connection, since the ports are different.
You don't need an external now, but I strongly advise getting one, with a drive as large or larger than your new Mac, you should clone/back up frequently, I use SuperDuper!  which will allow automatic backups.

  • 2.0 GHz Intel Quad core i7 vs. 3.7 GHz Intel Duo Core i7 Processor: Why not make the Quad Core 3.7GHz?

I don't really understand processors, but is the 2.0GHz Quad Core i7 really a better processor in terms of performance? If it has 4 cores why not give it greater processing speed like 2.7 or 3.0 GHz?
I am asking because I am thinking about getting the high end Mac Mini, but I see that it's processor runs at 2.0GHz and the others in the line run at 2.5 and 2.7 respectively. Why is this?

    I'm really oversimplifying here, but...
Let's just assume that each core runs at full speed all the time, the total performance of that processor would be the sum of the running totals of each core:
    Duo Core i7 = 2 (cores) * 2.7 GHZ = 5.4 Ghz total processor power
    Quad Core i5 = 4 (cores) * 2.0 GHZ = 8.0 Ghz
Like I said, oversimplified.  But, you get the point.  Not to mention, most apps still aren't optimized, so at a given time they only use a single core anyway. In this case, it'd be more beneficial to have more cores, since they would (hypothetically) be able to run more simultaneous processes (four vs. two in your case).
I gues the greater question is: what were you planning on using the mini for?  Most CPUs go underutilized anyway, so you may be better off getting a 2.0, and maxing out your RAM and maybe adding a SSD.  Those upgrades (the SSD especially) will result in a very noticeable increase in performance.
