Why no Skype for Modern Windows?

Why not allow people to continue to use Skype for Modern Windows? I understand getting people to upgrade to a better desktop version, but the desktop version lacks features present in the Modern Windows version. I often have very long Skype calls, where I might be playing a videogame or go on the internet at the same time. Skype for Modern Windows allows me to have one side of the screen(with adjustable width) for Skype and one side of the screen for a game in Fullscreen. I cannot do this with the desktop version. Please allow my computer to use Skype for Modern Windows, An annoyed lover of Skype

what?
if the RT version is going to be supported then why cant my regular windows 8,1 64 bit run it?
I mean it comes from the same store, so they are adding a updae to it where you cant  run it?
That means that they are doing extra programming just to not make it work
That's what I am saying here all the time. It is just childish stubbornness of Microsoft/Skype management to make (the small group yet) of Windows 8 tablet users angry and thinking of move to a different platform. • Skype for Modern Windows and Skype for Windows Desktop on a tablet???

Hi All. I am a newby here so please be patient I have a 6 month old Toshiba Encore that comes installed with "Skype for Modern Windows". When I opened Skype today I received an advice/advert saying that this service will cease July 7 and I should uninstall and update to "Skype for Windows Desktop". News flash.... I have a tablet and it is telling me to install a Desktop version? Is this correct, dispite that my device is a (Windows 8.1) OS tablet, am I still required to make the conversion? Any advice most appreciated.

And just in case your next question is "Why". I am just a user like you so no inside knowledge but from what I have read it is partly down to the "Modern" version actually being based on "Old" tech, so it couldn't intergrate with the cloud based future of Skype and partly down to it isn't probably worth fixing (It had a lot of issues that I could see). Unfortunatly for some it is a bit inconvenient that it's being killed off before Windows 10 is released. The one thing I liked about the "Modern" version was the intergration with for example your contacts in the people app, but if you uninstall (Or when it gets killed off in a couple of weeks) you lose that intergration. I know you still have it in Outlook with intergration for the desktop version but to be honest Outlook isn't great on a seven inch tablet either. From my understanding when 10 is finally here and Skype catches up there will be full Skype intergration with your contacts again (Although I could be wrong and that is for the WP). Anyway, I for one would love MS to consider the universal app idea based on the WP version for smaller or all tablets. Maybe someone from Skype will reply?

  • Skype for Modern Windows uses old P2P file trasfer...

The old P2P file transfer mode is not supported on Skype for Windows Phone. Only image file transfer using the new Cloud-based mode is supported. Older Skype devices are not capable to send files using the Cloud-based mode. This means that you can only receive image files sent from latest Skype versions installed on Windows/Mac computers and newer smartphones.
When o when do we get an update from Skype for Modern Windows wich can use the new Cloud based transfer mode, even within Skype translate this is not the case so i have no hope. But we never know so Skype people do your best ........

    Hi,
Thanks for your feedback. We will continue to add more features during the regular updates through the beta phase. Stay tuned.

  • How can I uninstall Skype for modern UI from windo...

    Hi,
I am running the tech preview of windows 10.  I exclusively use desktop mode and have Skype for Windows desktop installed.   I have never installed Skype for Modern UI.   However when I receive an incoming call I get two call answer dialogs, one from the desktop client and one from the modern UI client.   I have tried right click the modern UI skype icon in the start menu and choosing uninstall however that only opens the uninstall a program control panel windows.   This window only shows the desktop version as being available for uninstallation.
The annoying thing is that after I answer using the desktop cient the modern UI client keeps ringing forever or until I click on the X (close windows) icon in the top right corner of the notification dialog.   If I take the call on my win 8 laptop (desktop client) then my desktop modern UI client will continue to ring forever.   If I am using my laptop at work and take a call at say 11 am, when I get home at 6 pm the modern UI client is sitting there still ringing from the 11 o'clock call which was answered on a different computer hours before.
I have uninstalled the desktop client from the windows 10 desktop and then used regedit to remove every registry key I can find with skype in it and then re-installed the desktop client but the modern UI client comes back too?   Is there anyway to get rid of the modern UI client on windows 10, it is most annoying!

    Hi,
Windows 10 Tech Preview is an unsupported platform currently while we at Microsoft are working towards the release of the OS update later this year.
The suggested workaround is indeed to uninstall the "Skype for modern Windows" client and only use "Skype for Windows desktop". If you are struggling with getting the modern client removed please have a look at "Settings -> Apps" and try to remove it there.

  • PCWorld commentary on retirement of Skype's modern Windows 8 app

Instead of trying to bring its touchscreen app up to par with the desktop version, Skype will just discontinue the app altogether.
With Windows 10 looming, Skype no longer wants to have one app for touchscreens and another for mouse-and-keyboard.
As such, Microsoft is killing off Skype’s modern touchscreen app for Windows. Starting July 7, anyone who tries to use this app on Windows 8 or higher will be redirected to a download page for the desktop version.
The news doesn’t affect Skype’s modern Windows Phone app, and Microsoft says nothing will change for users of Windows RT tablets, such as the Surface and Nokia 2520. Presumably, that means Windows RT users will still have access to the app, though it’s unlikely they’ll receive any updates.

Strangely, Skype cited Windows 10 as a reason for abandoning its touchscreen app, but said nothing about offering a universal app for the upcoming operating system. A universal app would bestow a couple of distinct advantages: First, it would allow Skype to distribute its software through the Windows Store, allowing users to automatically get updates and easily re-download the app onto new PCs. It would also let Skype have a single app that works across phones, tablets, PCs, and the Xbox One. As it stands, Skype offers separate apps for each of these product categories, and distributes its desktop program through Skype.com. That’s not to say Skype won’t go universal after Windows 10's launched July 29. Microsoft is working on tools to convert desktop programs into universal apps, and it’d be downright shocking if Skype didn’t lead by example. Still, some of the details on this program are unclear, which might explain why Skype isn’t talking about it. In any case, it’s interesting that Skype is heading in a different direction than Microsoft Office, whose upcoming touch-friendly apps will be completely separate from the main desktop Office suite. Arguably, desktop Office is such a complex piece of software that merging it with the touch version just isn’t feasible right now. Sourced from : Jared Newman | @onejarednewmanPCWorld

  • Why is skype for web not being developed for linux?

i tried to get the skype extention for chrome on linux. and well i got that icon error. so i tried to work arround the error and was seccessful in getting the plugin installed. but the actual skype for web aplication doesn't seem to want to utilize the skype calling extention even after using a user agent to trick the skype for web page into thinking i am using chrome on windows. i end up hacing to install the windows plugin. and the skype for web page doesn't like to use the Skype Calling extention.but anyway  iwanted to know why the skype for web plugin is not being compiled for linux. i see no reason why someone couldn't just compile the plugin for linux with the already existing code. i would be willing to volunteer to compile the plugin and release the plugin for linux.

Hi and welcome to the Skype Community,
Skype for Web is currently a Beta version with support for calling via the plugin being limited to popular browsers on Windows and Mac. Unfortunately supporting calling on Chrome for Linux requires a bit more than simply recompiling the plugin. Going forward we are looking to add more features and allow calling on even more platforms, potentially even Linux.

  • Skype for Business - Windows Phone app released

Skype for Business - Windows Phone appWhat’s new—intuitive interface, more emoticons, improved server communicationsIf you are familiar with the Lync app for Windows Phone, you’ll notice a number of enhancements in the new app. The most noticeable differences right off the bat are the Skype for Business brand and UI, which is intuitive and familiar if you happen to use Skype in your personal communications. We’ve also revamped emoticons, which now offers over 100 emoticons to land your message visually.
We have improved how the app and the server handle conversation notifications. Once you’re notified of a new conversation on your phone, the other clients you have logged in won’t be able to grab the conversation and prevent you from...

  • Why is iTunes for MS Windows so flakey ?

I don't understand why a company like Apple cannot make iTunes stable.
Seems that iTunes gets worse after every release! There are nearly 1/4 million discussions in the iTunes for Windows section!
iTunes constantly hangs my Windows, I usually have to stop the iTunes process for windows to come alive again.
iPad and iPhone wifi sync constantly errors.
Come on Apple please stabilise iTunes.
    Don't make me go Android.

It sucketh.  However, I disagree that it has gotten worse.  It think we have so many new users so the number of complaints have increased.
I've seen an improvement.  At least now you can restart iTunes and resolve most problems.  We used to have to reboot Windows to get it to work!   Before that, we had to uninstall all components (in a specific order) and then reinstall them.
Things are getting better and hopefully it will eventually become rock solid on Windows and/or 100% OTA.

  • Upgrade now to Skype for Windows desktop

You are correct that the Skype for Windows desktop app does not support connected standby. As we announced in the blog post on the topic we are currently working hard to get the new integrated Skype experience for Windows 10 in your hands which should make up for that.Nice. So the removal of Connected standby support is the "more efficient experience" on mobile tablet devices with mobile Internet connection ? Wouldn't be more logical and fair to wait until the "new integrated Skype experience for Windows 10" is ready and well tested prior to cut reasonable access to Skype for existing Windows tablet customers ? Again, do you really want Windows tablet customers ? The Skype download optimized for other tablet platforms is still available, isn't it ?

  • Disable startup sound in 'Modern Windows' Skype

Please help me to disable the horrible noise that Skype makes at startup. I know how to do it in normal Skype (desktop version). Now i need help to turn off the startup sound in Skype for Modern Windows (from Windows Store).

Probably no need to unless you have a Windows RT device http://community.skype.com/t5/Modern-Windows-from-Windows/Upgrade-now-to-Skype-for-Windows-desktop/td-p/4012052

  • Skype for Desktop is unusable on Tablet devices

Why am I being forced to use the desktop client when it functions terribly on tablets? I enjoyed being able to use a full-screen, resizeable/multitasking client, and now I can't even see what I'm typing with the on-screen keyboard, along with being subjected to the awful banner ads that even further shrink visibility.  For the love of god, either bring back Skype for Modern Windows, or give us the option to change the interface in the Desktop app to look like it used to. Given that I literally cannot even use the client right now, no thanks to the limited ability for Skype to shrink its window past a certain size being what prevents me from seeing what I'm even typing, I will be seeking an alternative IM client unless this is resolved.

Go to the store and look for Skype Translator, it is basically the "modern" app with the translation bits added. It's not perfect but compared to the desktop version on a tablet its wonderful. And like the rest of us, join the queue for a proper explanation from someone at Skype or MS.

  • Skype for Desktop Not Launching on Surface 3

I have a new Microsoft Surface 3 and when I tried to use the Skype app for the first time today, I got the following message. Time to get a new Skype app We've replaced the app with an improved Skype experience.  See what you can do with the new app.  Download now. On 7 July 2015, we will be turning off Skype for Modern Windows......please download Skype for Windows Desktop. After I have followed the instructions and removed the old app and downloaded and installed the new program (7.6.80.105) and pinned it to the Start sceen, when I launch it, having entered my log-in credentials, I am taking to a "Skype" window, but it only allows me to manage my Microsoft account.  This screen starts with: Hello!  Here's where you manage your account. There are no options anywhere on this screen to launch the actual Skype program. Please advise that has happened, as - at the moment - I have a new Surface 3 that cannot run Skype. Thank you.

    Hi,
Can you share a screenshot of what your are seeing when you launch the Skype app?
You might want to try clicking the "Sign in with a different account" link at the bottom of that window and see if that helps to take you back to the "Sign in to Skype with my Microsoft account" option.

  • Skype history Modern Win / Desktop skype

    Hey guys
I was using Skype for modern WIndows until 2 days ago when it stopped working.
I know it said on the download page that I need to copy my history (or a chat log) somewhere else before upgrading but I wasnt given ANY option of logging in(or reviewing chat logs) in order to do that.
I did upgrade to skype for desktop and my old skype for modern windows still says "time to get a better app", since support is ending on the 7th i'm stuck in this limbo.
The real problem is I have a very important chat log I want to save. Nothing else, and it's from February this year(and it should be still there because I checked something a week ago).
Any help would be much appreciated, since that log is really important for me.

You should be able to retrieve all your old history by transferring the main.db file from the depreciated modern Skype app to the new desktop version. http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Message-history-lost/m-p/4057705#M357350
