Why no styles defined

I am working with Classroom in a Book - Dreamweaver CS5 and am currently working through Chapter 4 'Getting a Quick Start' - Selecting and Modifying CSS styles. My design and code pages look fine, but in the CSS Styles panel I only have (no styles defined). How come?

Bullet style defined as "disc" in CSS is inserted as "circle"

We use RH9 with RSC. I've been wondering about this problem for a few weeks and maybe someone here has an idea why it's happening...
The bullet style is defined as "disc" in our CSS, yet when I insert a bulleted list (using the button on the RH toolbar), my bullets end up as "circle" style. I don't use any other formatting on the bullets (the HTML I get is just <ul style="circle"><li>blahblah</li</ul>). The weird thing is that's it's only happening for me. My coworker opened the same project and she's getting "disc" bullets correctly.
It's not a major problem, I just go in the HTML and fix the bullets manually, but it's really bugging me. Is there a global setting in RH (or Windows?) that I messed up? Did I somehow set "circle" bullets as my default and that's overwriting the CSS?

I am guessing this is not source control related but because of the way you have defined lists.
In older versions of Rh you could define a paragraph style as a list. Since Rh8 lists have to be defined as list styles but you can superimpose a paragraph style for characteristics such as as font size and colour for the text. See Lists on my site and the link to Upgrading.

SLD acts as a server for SLD.In IR we need SWCV(s/w componenet version) and in ID we need Business System and who provide these....SLD only.

The SAP System Landscape Directory (SLD) is a J2EE application. It uses the Common Information Model (CIM) from Distributed Management Task Force, Inc. (http://www.dmtf.org) and implements this vendors Web-Based EnterpriseManagement (WBEM) for client-server communications.
The SLD Server is a central data storage point for system landscape information for system management applications. The SLD Server guarantees the consistency of the stored data. Data in the SLD can be split into two categories:
· Component Information
This category includes information about all available SAP software modules (such as products, software components, and Support Packages), as well as information about how you can combine them, and any dependencies on other modules. SAP provides you with the component information; customers can update this information as required at SAP Service Marketplace (http://service.sap.com) (for more information, see SAP Note 669669). Customers can also add components from third-party vendors to their SLD.
· Landscape Description
This category describes the individual system landscape installed at the customer site. The description of the components that are actually installed, combined with the component information, provides reliable and up-to-date data for system management applications. These Data Suppliers are configured specifically for each system and send the current system data to the SLD at regular intervals (for more information, see SAP Notes 584654 and 673144).

Customers can choose to operate the Name Server together with their SLD Server in a single software instance, or they can operate the servers on two separate hardware servers.
Effects on System Administration
In most cases, you only need one SLD for each system landscape. After you have installed a SAP Web Application Server that you want to use as an SLD Server, you must configure the operation of the SLD Server. The configuration consists mainly of the following activities:

· Setting up the Data Bridge for receiving data from the Data Supplier

Why are style overrides rejected by preflight

I have done four volumes of a set for a client and on number 5, ID has decided that all of my style overrides are unacceptable. Because the client wants each word in the indigenous language to be bold italics and each word in Spanish to be italics, I have done that consistently in other volumes simply by highlighting the words and changing the character styles (or doing a find/replace styles for the most common words). Four volumes, no problem. Volume 5 BIG problem. I still have 239 errors (out of approximately 800+) to fix in the preflight panel and I'm getting seriously frustrated. I can do them ONE at at time, by double clicking it in the preflight panel and then clicking on the style in the character styles panel that I need and it goes nicely away. It won't let me choose multiple ones to fix at one time. I will be here another hour doing the next 239 of them. What did I do wrong? I used a template made from a previous volume for this one, so i can't figure out why with this volume it refuses to accept overrides. No problem in previous volumes. What's the big deal? Within any paragraph of any text in any job done in ID, even a style marked as "normal," could need an italicized word from time to time, so what's going on? I know I must be missing something fundamental. So help me out here. I'm ready to scream.
I just tried using find/replace again, hoping that would help--NOPE. While it said it did over 100+ changes, they still come up as errors on pre-flight.

Thanks, Willi. I only set the profile to ignore style overrides relating to the character styles in the text. It still warns me of other issues. Plus, there are so freaking many of these style overrides, that I can make sure I've caught them all and look out for other character style issues that are not related to the indigenous language or Spanish. Having these overrides in the document are simply the nature of the text. I will definitely preflight the PDF before sending it to the printer--that will uncover other issues I might have missed.

Why Are Styles Relative to Components and Not Skins?

I am trying to make a skin for a Button that consists of nothing more than an image. I want to make a generic skin that I can reuse and just have a style for the source of the image. The problem, however, is that the [Style] metadata tags exist on the Button component and not on the skin. Thus, since Button does not have a "source" style property defined, I cannot do something like this:

Since there is no "source" style for button this results in a compile error. It seems to me like this shouldn't be an issue. Since all of the presentation is inside of the skin, shouldn't the styles be defined on the skin instead of the component? If the reason for not doing this is backwards compatibility related, then it seems like the compiler could just pull from both places.
As it stands, it is very cumbersome to have to create an entire subclass of Skin just to change the source of an image. Alternatively, I could subclass button to have the style property declared, but that seems very inelegant. Thoughts?

Good to know what I am doing is correct. I think the inline "style" attribute you proposed seems the most appealing, if not only for its congruency with xhtml.
Alternatively, since really what styles boil down to are just methods for parameterizing skins, it could be cool if there was something like the following:

Or maybe have the have the skin style attributes be defined in their own namespace, e.g.:

That way the compiler wouldn't have to make 2 passes to guess at what skin is applied to the component, it would just have to lookup the skin implementation corresponding to the namespace.

Why do style and skin directories need to be maintained in multiple paths?

What is the significance of having to store style and skin directories (for both original and custom styles and skins) in two directories? The blog post specifically mentions having to store style and skin directories in the following two directories:
1. ..\OracleBI\web\app\res\
2. ..\OracleBI\oc4j_bi\j2ee\home\applications\analytics\analytics\res\
Why isn't just one instance of the style and skin directories sufficient? And what happens if I fail to keep the contents of the directories in sync?
(In the comments section of the above blog post, a user goes even further, recommending storing custom style and skin directories in the ..\OracleBIData\web\res directory, instead. Note the presence of "Data", and the absence of "app", in this additional directory path. So that's potentially a third location to keep these directories!)

The default installation of OBIEE uses embedded application server called OC4J. I don't research this featurevery deep but I guess that application in such configuration may use files in a bi and oc4j_bi directory. But you may install OBIEE under another application server. In this case only bi directory will be use.

Style defined in page header works in FF but not IE

I need to conditionally display data in red and with strike-through in a standard report (multi-column, multi-row); in effect some lines will be normal, some in red and strike-through.
I declared a style in the page header
<style type="text/css">
st {font-size: 7.5pt; color: red; text-decoration: line-through}
</style>
and wrapped the data in <st> </st> tags in the select statement based on the condition.
This works fine in firefox but not at all in internet explorer. Because the requirement is based on a condition, I must do this at select time.
Anyone got any ideas? If you have I may also ask how to do it on a manually built tabular form (using apex_item).

I am surprised your method worked in FF, as "st" is not a standard tag AFAIK.

Why is User defined exception block not reaching

I want to catch exception if wrong column name is there in a select statement.
In this example i am useing static query but in real time it will be a dynamic query and it may be possible that a particualre column has been deleted from that table so an error will be returned that we need to catch and display custom message to the user. But control is not going to exception block.

Why font styles fail to work

I am using Windows 7. In Indesign 5.0 some fonts do not appear with their styles. For example, a particular font has 4 variants (Normal, Bold, Bold Italic and Italic). But only one style appears in Indesign.
I have tried to put all the four fonts in Indesign > fonts folder also. Yet it fails.
Can anybody help.

"SwitzerlandCondensed", on the other hand, sounds like a cheap copy -- or even a ripped-off version (of, possibly, a cheap copy).
Cheap Copiers don't take the time and effort to fill in all required fields necessary to uniquely identify fonts and still maintain proper linkage between its variants. InDesign is very careful in accepting such fonts, and if there is reason not to use it, it won't show up in ID's font list. (But even then it's known to sometimes choke on such malformed fonts.)
Only with some very careful and time-consuming cross-checking of every single parameter in the fonts you could solve this -- and to "repair" it needs a deep knowledge of the font file format. For this case, I simply would not bother:
Advice #1: don't use any such fonts.
Advice #2: don't attempt to use this font in particular. You've already found reasons not to.

Why do styles NOT hold their font size?

I've learned how to set styles and am now applying them to a document, but I've noticed that the font size is not holding. I'm using Cochin in 10 point for a section that is two columns of text with some poetry lines here and there. I've checked the styles to make sure font size is set, but the paragraphs slip into 11 and don't hold at 10.
Now that I'm committed to using Pages instead of Word for this book project, I hate being bogged down by this problem. Any suggestions welcome/

There are several types of styles, character, paragraph and list styles. Paragraph styles effect the whole paragraph. Character styles effect only the selected text.
It sounds as if you are looking for character styles:
• Select the text that is in the format you wish to emulate.
• Open the styles drawer and click and hold down the plus sign until the choice between character and paragraph styles appears. Choose 'create character style from selection' and save it in the name you wish.
To apply a character style, select some text and click on the character style you created. You can change styles like this within a paragraph.

Can I define 2 Distinct Style for A link tag?

I created a template for my main menu and other universal contents. the items on my main menu are all matched with specific colors that I chose, (let's say red when normal and purple when hover)
now, a page I inherit from the template, let's say B, has some links as well... and they should not inherit the link style defined in my templated. (for example, they should be blue and white when hover)
is there any ways for me to do that? right now, if i changed the link color for B, it.. well... does nothing
(should the law of greater specificity allow the definition in children to override the parent?)
so, how do i get the effect i want? (red menu, blue other links)
