Why No Tif Thumbnails?

I've just switched from using Lightroom for cataloguing my photos to Bridge (via Photoshop ES5).  Incoporating the same Windows 7 "My Pictures" contents, I get thumbnails in Bridge for my RAW files but not for my TIF files.  Has anyone any explanation or advice for me?  Thanks, Jim

Since you just set it up you may have something contaminated in the preference file.
Hold down the Ctrl key and start Bridge, you should get a reset window with 3 options.  This will reset everything to factory defaults.
If that does not work, do all folders exhibit the same problem?  It may be that you have a contaminated tiff, or the name structure is incorrect.  When you use PS to save a new tiff those errors are corrected.

Why are my thumbnails not matching the photos in my smart album?

I am rebuilding my thumbnails--a slow process I am learning.  We'll see how that does.  I believe I have the latest version of both iPhoto and OS.  What happens is that the thumbnail does not match the photo.  The photo in the thumbnail is in the same series, but not the same.  Many of the thumbnails are the same photo from the series.  I'll report back on the success of the thumbnail rebuilding process.

  • Why do the thumbnails not reflect changes I make to pages?

I am working on a pdf in Acrobat DC.
I am working on a page with all the layers hidden.
    So the thumbnail is blank
When I show a layer it appears on the page.
The thumbnail however does not change.
Why do the thumbnails not reflect changes I make to pages?

    Hi Jules,
The behavior is same in Acrobat 11 as well. The thumbnails do not get refreshed till you close the document and reopen.

  • TIF thumbnail incorrect in Windows Explorer (PSE 7 and 8)

Sometimes when I save a TIF file (with “Discard Layers and Save a Copy” selected) the thumbnail shown in Windows Explorer is incorrect.
The thumbnail appears to show only one layer from the PSD I have been working on, even if that layer no longer exists because it has been deleted or the image has been flattened.
I have experienced this problem in Elements 7 and 8, and on a machine with a fresh install of Windows XP and Elements 8.
Is anyone else having this problem?

Lol.  Adobe has known about this stupid problem for about 4 years.  Since Vista x64 started gaining popularity.  Acrobat 8.x was the first version where people really started scratching their heads wondering why & when the problem would be fixed.  Then came Acrobat 9.   And now "X".  Still not fixed, well, I'm sure next year we'll have Acrobat 11, so keep holding your breath.

  • TIF thumbnails initially populate, but turn 80% black when I "Open With PS"

I'm scanning photographs with a relatively-new Epson 10000XL scanner. I save the scans as ~300MB TIFs, copy the entire folder, then crop the copies with Photoshop CS5 12.0.3 on a Win XP 2.2GHz Pentium Dual Core CPU with 3.25GB RAM. The crop goes fine and the the save seems to go fine. Filesize of all cropped files is consistent. A few days later, I notice the image is 80-90% black, with only the top strip OK. This happens to about 15% of the images I've scanned. The original scans are always OK, so I think I can rule out the scanner. The cropped image thumbnails look good in Bridge, but when I right click and "Open with PS", the thumbnail turns 80% black and an 80% black TIF shows up in Photoshop...baffling. Sometimes half the image is black, but usually it is mostly black. Always, it is the bottom area of the image that is black. I can rescan and recrop the image, but a 15% rescan rate at 6-7 min/scan is killing me. What the devil is causing this? Is this a hardware issue, and if so, is it a RAM deficiency? Defective RAM? Defective hard drive? Conflicting software? Whimpy graphics card? Something else?

    Replies to Curt and Omke:
In original post you said you were running Win XP, so it that home computer and work is Win7?
Work PC = Win XP, Photoshop CS5, Dual-core processor and 4 GB RAM. Home PC = Win7, Photoshop 5.0, Quad-core processor and 4GB RAM. Both are 32-bit OS. I cropped and saved 20 of these TIFs on the home Win7 machine, and had no problems with black images at any time. I tested those same TIFs on a work machine that is identical to my Win XP work machine, and had lots of problems with them turning black. This suggests that the OS, video card and/or CPU are causing trouble on the work machine, not necessarily the RAM. It doens't seem to be a problem unique to my PC, but rather to all the PCs that are just like my PC (our organization buys in bulk, and we all have identical PC setups).
Most likely it is the RAM.  With a 64 bit machine you are really handicapping yourself with 4 gigs.  You also need a good deal of space on the scratch disk, so make sure you have ample free space.
I have 62GB out of 150GB free on C drive, but it’s fragmented. Will try defragmenting to see if that helps. I think, with my 32-bit Win XP, I am limited to 4GB, right? Does a 64-bit system have that much improvement over 32-bit?
Graphics card is the other likely suspect.
On the work PC that is causing me trouble, graphics card= ATI Radeon HD 3450.
In Bridge go to advanced preferneces and check "use software rendering".  That will help if graphics card is underpowered.
That will help with what, exactly? Will that help avoid corrupted files? It seems like the problem lies in Photoshop, not necessarily with Bridge.
In photoshop go the edit/kpreferences/file handling and make sure Open GL is not checked.
It was checked. I unchecked it, but still had images turning black on me when I cropped and saved them.
Your files are still OK, they only show not good in Bridge? or are they all damaged?
~15% of cropped scan tifs open mostly black in PS and Windows Explorer, and open mostly black in Bridge full-screen preview also. The other 85% look OK in all programs. The 15% initially look OK as thumbnails in Bridge, but after ~30 min, or if I try to open them in PS or full-screen preview, they turn mostly black. It would appear to me that those 15% of cropped scan files are corrupt, and perhaps only look OK in Bridge initially because Bridge is accessing some embedded low-resolution preview, then later updating the preview using the actual image file, but I’m not sure on that last point.
You state to have PS 12.0.3 in, while I'm on a Mac I have 12.0.4 installed s the latest so first try a software update.
That’s a pretty involved process with our IT dept. I don’t have Admin privileges to do that, but I’ll raise the issue.
Also check your PS performance settings. If you have only 4 GB RAM installed and you did point PS to more then the default and having some other applications open you will become soon short of RAM. (Bridge pointed to that already)
This is a point of confusion for me. PC specs list 3.25GB RAM, but in PS prefs, “Available RAM: 1691MB, of which 71% (1201 MB) is allowed for PS use. I would think PS would at least recognize all the PC RAM as available, but this is also the general trend on my home PC where PS doesn't recognize all the RAm that Windows does...must be a distinction between total RAM and available RAM.
In Bridge Prefs the default setting for maximum file size to build HQ preview is 1GB. Could you check if this is also your case?
    Yes, that is the case.
And I also agree with Curt that if you have multiple files open with that size your machine specs should be above average, and you should have at least 10 % free space on your HD.
I’m running at about 50% free HD space, though fragemented. I would like to make some sort of recommendation to IT about a system upgrade, and it seems like a better processor is a key factor, followed by the OS and graphics card. Without going to a 64-bit system, I believe I'm maxed out on RAM, but correct me if I'm wrong. Our organization prefers everyone to be on the same OS, which is why we're all still on WinXP.

  • In Pages 5, why are page thumbnails different sizes?

So I'm using 5. And I must say I think it's brilliantly done after a long period of ******** about it. I guess I'm not asking of it anything it doesn't provide and what it does it does very well - though I'm puzzled by the behavior of selecting text via the keyboard.
Anyhow, that's not my question. I'm working with a long text document. I notice that as I work the page thumbnails become different sizes. It's subtle but it's clearly intentional. I reckon it's trying to tell me something but I don't know what. Haven't been able to find any info in the manual and was wondering if any of you clever people here might know. Thanks.

This is what I meant about how rude you are though.  Your answer DOESN'T EXPLAIN ANY OF THE BEHAVIOUR myself or the other person were reporting.  The only assumption that I can make is that you posted here for the sole purpose of implying that we are both mistaken or stupid.
How is this helpful at all?
How do you have 32,485 points when you are obviously more concerned with insulting people than helping them out?  It puts the lie to the whole idea of "Apple Support Communities."
Also, I specifically informed you that your comments were insulting and unhelpful and politely requested you not post on this thread anymore or at least until you had some kind of actual information, yet here you are.  Posting again, with no content other than the implied insult.
I'm not stupid.  I know what a section break is, I know what a page break is.  I'm a writer who has used innumerable word processing programs over the years and have been an IT worker for 10 years now.
I have a Pages document.  It has no (or only one depending on your point of view), section(s).  It has page breaks only.  The pagination is set to start at "1" on the first page and proceed normally to the end of the document (300 or so pages).  I am using Pages 5.5.2 on a brand new iMac.  I have NONE of the previous or older versions/types of Pages on my computer.
The pages thumbnails on the side, do actually CHANGE SIZE randomly as I am editing the document.   These differing sizes are NOT CORRELATED WITH THE BEGINNING OR ENDING OF SECTIONS.  These size changes are also NOT CORRELATED WITH THE PAGE BREAKS (in case you were about to argue the similarity of page breaks and section breaks).  As I work through the document and scroll up and down editing here or there, the size of the thumbnails RANDOMLY CHANGE SIZE.  Sometimes this is correlated with me working on a section, sometimes I can work on a section and no change happens at all.  The thumbnails that change size often change back again when I scroll back to them later on.
So please ... Try to act like a decent human being and either help out, or go away.  STOP POSTING THAT WE ARE WRONG, when you DON'T in fact know we are wrong.  STOP INSULTING ME by assuming I am stupid.
Why are you even here if you don't want to actually HELP anyone?
To anyone else reading this:  I am having a real bad time with this fellow who is just the most insulting person I have met for a while, however many of my posts about him are being deleted.  If anyone knows (including the mods of this forum) of the proper way to REPORT or get rid of a troll/abuser like him on Apple Support Communities or a place to report his behaviour, please let me know.

  • Why are the thumbnails on the comments sections of blogs covering the text in safari?

Why doe my iPhone make the size of the thumbnails so large that they cover up the text in the comments section of different blogs? They're mobile sites and they appear this way in safari and chrome. This is a new occurrence after the latest update.

You may have zoomed the page(s) by accident by using "Zoom Text Only" (i.e. not full page zoom).
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
    *<b>View > Zoom > Reset</b> (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))
If you have made changes to Advanced font settings like increasing the minimum/default font size then try the default minimum setting "none" and the default font size 16 in case the current setting is causing problems.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but to use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with text not being displayed properly.

  • Bridge color tif thumbnails appear as partial B&W

Recently Bridge has taken my scanned color files, to which I made minor adjustment and save in PScs6 as a tif., and has given the saturation value as -100 for "reds", -100 for the "oranges" and -98 for the "yellows" in camera raw 8.3 HSL/Grayscale/Saturations. This shows up in the Bridge thumbnails. When I choose the image to open directly in photoshop CS6 no problem with the color. When I choose open in camera raw. The first thing I have to do is correct the saturation.. Is there a fix for this annoyance?

    Curt Y
You know that using a MAC I select a tif image to open in ACR by using the command > r keys. When I do this the image that shows grey in the Bridge thumbnails opens in camera raw as the grey thumbnails I see in bridge which when I go to HSL/Grayscale/Saturations.  show the values as I have described. However when I select the grey thumbnail in bridge and double click it the image opens in PS CS6 as the full color image I am expecting to see from the bridge thumbnail through to the open image. So to be clear. In Bridge the problem images show themselves as partially grey until corrected in ACR. Saving them in PSC6 does nothing as far as their appearance in Bridge. It is a bit maddening. Check this out in your ACR. Take the values I have described and you will see what I see. Thanks for your attention. Hope this helps.

  • Why are my thumbnails sometimes looking overexposed?

Using CS6, infrequently and inconsistently, the thumbnails are not accurate, appearing over exposed. This mostly occurs with jpgs, made from tifs/ psds, but on rare occasion has occurred in tif/ psd too. This is not a constant issue, and I cannot fathom a pattern. I can process several images at same time and only one might be affected. I have emptied my bridge cache, so that doesn't seem to contribute. Have others experienced this. Any ideas?

I said nothing about going into preferences.  I said "You can also right click on thumb and select "purge cache for selection".  It it solves problem you have the answer.
To purge cache for a folder use Tools/cache/purge cache for xxxx folder."  Purging the entire general cache is more of a blunt instrument.
Also, if you have cache exported to folders you have 2 caches and the general purge of cache does not purge the folder cache.  Only going to Tools/cache will purge this cache also.
    farbafoto wrote:
As noted in my response to Curt, purging the image or folder cache momentarily shows the accurate exposure then instantly reverts to the washed out one. Does this lead you to further understanding of the issue? Thanks so much.
Yes, that means your imbedded jpeg thumbnail shows and then replaced as your HQ thumb is generated.  HAve you changed camera raw defaults, or checked any boxes in edit/camera raw preferences?

  • Why all these thumbnails folders?

iTunes keeps making all these thumbnail folders - I can delete them and it runs without them.
So why does it keep making them?
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\thumbnails

    It's a bunch of nested folders named 00, 01, 03, 04 and the like.
Those folders also have nested folders. When I finally get to the last nested folder, it has a file named something like this in it.
    642DC00FB08C916C-E43BCA7049770C00.itc
I think it's a wierd XP thing, according to annoyances.org

I changed the folder and registry setting, and my PC crashed.

  • Why are some thumbnails turned sideways

Recently some of my thumbnails are turned 90 deg. and distorted? If I click on them the photo comes sideways
for a second and then corrects. If I rotate the thumbnails the main photo gets rotated also.
This has only recently started to happen? Any idea what is causing this?
    Thanks.
    Pat.

    Pat,
That has happened to me on occasion and I'm not sure why.

  • Why are my thumbnails suddenly smaller

My daughter, who is 1.5 years old, was hitting the keys on my keyboard and now my thumbnails in IPhoto are too small. I can't figure out how to change them back. They are hard to see now.

Thank you. That worked great. It's so simple I felt a little stupid.

  • Why are my thumbnails and folders changing???

For some reason my image thumbnails and folders are misbehaving.
    Thumbnails
The thumbnail images will just disappear on SOME images in a folder but not all.
    Folders
The folder sizes will max out in some folders but not in others.
And, I am not sure this has anything to do with this, but sometimes when I add an image to a folder it will spring open and close very quickly. This does not happen all the time, but it does happen. This could just be a Leopard thing, I am not sure.
To make the thumbnail images re-appear, I just re-start my computer. However, this does not correct the folder over-sizing. I have to manually do this as I find them. And, to be clear, I have 'Show Icon Preview' selected. I know that in Tiger you could mistakenly change ALL the folders on you HD, but I did not think you could do this with Leopard. If this IS possible, then that could explain the folder changes, but not the image disappearances.
This all began as I was moving files over to my external HD yesterday. Same this is happening today. So, this is a constant battle that I am not winning by any stretch.
ANY comments or suggestions will be most welcome.
    Phillip Anthony

    Thanks for the detailed help.
I am aware of what you so kindly suggested, but I think the cause of my problem lay somewhere else.
To be clear, I have used the Info palette to change the 'Open with:' function from 'Adobe Photoshop CS4' to say, 'Preview', if I just want to view the image as opposed to modify it, especially if PS were not already launched.
As I said, this problem just began all of a sudden, then quit. Today, I have not had this issue, so I am not complaining. As I go through my workflow, I continue to find maxed out folder sizes, but these are easily corrected. It was the lack of thumbnails that was the issue.
Again, I sincerely appreciate the suggestion.
    Phillip

  • Since installing CS6, color of jpg/tif thumbnails in Bridge is washed out until opened.

Since intalling CS6, tif and jpg images in Bridge appear washed out. When opened, the image color depth is normal. How can I correct this?

    Start with purging cache.

  • Why is the thumbnail images placed in different order than the xml?

    Hi all!
This same code I have asked about before, and got excelent help, but this is a different problem so I just start a new thread.
This is a code that open a XML file, containing a small list of images, and place them as thumbs on the page.
It kinda work now, but the funny thing is, the order of the thumbs is totally scrambled compared to the xml list, and I can't just see why!
It has something to do whith when the loaders gets transfered via addEventListener to the placePics function, more than that I cant find out!
There may be the better way to put up this code. I just feel putting it up in two nested addEventListeners like this is not the best of practice. But I see no other way here...
