Why not autoconnecting "when needed"?

Hi there,
I'm not sure where the best place is to post this question, but, I'll start here and hope for some guidance!
I have my network preferences set to have my "built in ethernet pppoe session options" "connect automatically when needed".
However, after waking my mini from her slumber, Apple Mail will try to "get mail" and yet this does not inspire an automatic connection. I've found that I can go to firefox and click the reload arrow on a previously open website and internet connect will THEN immediately connect so as to reload the site.
Not a huge deal. Just not sure why, when coming out of sleep mode, when Mail tries to get new mail, that is not considered a "when needed" circumstance by internet connect!
Any ideas?

Hmmm. I use DSL...um, just not sure what I should be doing. I guess there was probably a time, many moons ago, when this was the instruction I got from my ISP (pacbell.net).
What are the differences in the set ups (above)?
How can I determine whether or not one of the other set ups would be work for me?

Why Not Use WHEN OTHERS - Friday Question

There are several people on this forum that abhor use of WHEN OTHERS in the same vein as GOTO (which really is a bad practice). I have an open mind and am looking for the reason it should be avoided.
When used to output the state during unexpected exceptions, WHEN OTHES can dramatically reduce debug time. The only bad exception handler is WHEN OTHERS THEN NULL. Error logging to a table is important and should include the back trace and call stack in addition to listing pertinent parameter, constant and variable values. I consider this debug instrumentation. If you write perfect code or you don't have end users that are very creative in finding bugs that occur because of the convoluted way they get to the code that causes the error you don't need it. Or you like the thrill of the hunt going slogging through thousands of lines of code to try to figure out what caused the error. I am lazy and want to have it spelled out for me. Below is my error logging table (CODE is a session level transaction identifier used for filtering) and my error logging procedure is equivalent to DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE. This makes it easy to take other people's code and replace DBMS_OUTPUT with my error logging. This becomes very useful for debugging triggers since there is no standard output device.

My opinion is that I hate it when an application -- any application, under any framework, in any language -- swallows an error message. As to getting into the weeds of WHEN OTHERS, I tend to agree that it should be avoided but am open to arguments for exceptions. Does that sound like waffling? It's not intended to be. Here's where I have to make a confession. When I transitioned from the role of "developer" (we called them "programmer/analyst" then) to dba, my shop was also transitioning from IBM's IMS database (hierarchical) to relational databases - first DB2, then as client-sever architecture came in they settled on Oracle as the C/S database. Because I was viewed as an "early adopter" and had been doing some development work on our first client-server apps, I was tagged to become our first Oracle DBA. (My first oracle db was v7.3 on Win 3.11)   As a result of that path, I never really got heavily into development with PL/SQL. I can do OK on individual procedures - mostly for one-off or stand-alone use. But I never developed that mental framework and toolbox of procedures that only comes with working heavily in a language.

Mavericks introduced, and no improvements to Contacts? Why not? When?

I waited for a reference, a comment, an acknowledgment of some kind that Contacts was given some consideration in the new OS release. Nothing. Can we hope that Apple will upgrade - improve - advance Contacts, or is this a futile wish? Apple, give us a truely responsive contacts manager to serve as the hub of iWork, Mail, and etc. (Maybe I missed it - maybe there is a behind the scene development of Contacts going forward.)

I didn't see anything mentioned about Contacts either, but past experience suggests that there will be many other features in the next iteration of OS X that have not been announced yet.
Wait and see, or get proactive and use the link the previous poster gave to let Apple know how you feel.

Yep. You need to touch the sleep/power button once to silence the ring, and twice in order for the call to go directly to Voicemail.

I've tried both. First, I tried on my pc, where iTunes had installed iCloud when it last updated. I have iTunes installed on this computer (and on my iPad and iPhone), but that wasn't the issue.
So I went online, thinking I needed a separate iCloud Apple ID, but it prompted me for my current Apple ID and gave me the message about my ID being "valid" but not an iCloud account," which, lol, was what it had asked me to do in order to create one. I'm just wondering why is it that when I place an image from iPhoto to an iMovie project, it is not displayed when I play it from beginning to end in fullscreen playback mode? However, when I exit it on the timeline, it is shown. All I did as drag it from the iPhoto column and place on at the beginning. I would really appreciate someones help because I really need to be able to place images onto my projects. Thanks!

You need to link your iPhone number to Messages - and Facetime if you use it. For Messages go to Settings>Messages>Send and Receive at>You can be reached by iMessage at. If your phone number is showing there, select it as your Contact address. If it doesn't appear in there, take a look at the end of this article for help.

Why is it when I save an email with attachments, the attachments are not in the saved email?

Does anyone know why it is when you save an email that has images (attachments) when you go to access the file again with the images, they are not in the document?
The box marked "save attachments" is ticked?

Is this your Apple account or some other mail?
And are they all in the Inbox of your Mail? If so, rebuild the mailbox. If this is huge, it'll take some time.
IF the images are HUGE, it'll take time to download them from the server to your computer. But once done they should remain there without the need to do anything at all (by default they are already saved).
To click the Save button is to save them somewhere on your hard drive ... maybe to offload elsewhere later.
Actually, you could just as easily save them to iPhoto instead of using Mail to look for and view them. Its a much faster viewing process, and you could set them up by dealers, artists, etc. ... or so I think.

Do you mean the AC wall adapter or the cable when you say "charger"? Neither is a charger; the charger is built into the phone. You need to do some basic troubleshooting. First, try a different cable with the same AC adapter. Then try a different USB source such as the USB port on your computer. If you get the same message after both tests the problem lies in the phone. The most common cause of this message is dirt, moisture or pocket lint in the lightning connector on the bottom of the phone. Inspect it with a bright light and clean it with a plastic or wood toothpick. If none of these steps resolve the problem take the phone, cable and adapter to an Apple store for diagnosis. Normal secured WiFi requires only a password to get access. The password is used to encrypt traffic between your device and the WiFi access point. If whatever you are using requires a username as well then it is not simply normal secured WiFi. If you are running Tiger, you don't have time machine.
You need to get something like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner (sorry, I don't have a handy link for CCC but you can Google it to get their site) to make a clone of your drive on the external and then do incremental backups. The free versions do a lot and you can upgrade to the full-service versions for small change if you need more. The one time I used SuperDuper! for cloning a volume it worked just fine.
(My backup application is the last PPC capable version of Retrospect, which does a credible job, or has over the past ten-twelve years.)

Make sure your devices are also connected to external power or the wifi will disconnect after a few seconds. If they are and they still won't back up, it may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail. To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup. Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail. To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again. If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again. If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again. If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails. Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.
