Why not default boot to 64

I did some quick investigating into 64-32 boots and am wondering why one would boot to 32 ? Other than drivers issues are there other factors ?
I also found this nifty little app
http://www.ahatfullofsky.comuv.com/English/Programs/SMS/SMS.html

I think that's a way to give developers the chance to re-compile 64-bit code. There really isn't a lot of it out there yet..

  • QT PRO high quality option, why not default after UPDATE?

I just installed the new QT Security Update, and now my QT quality for my videos is quite sub-standard across the board. I first noticed it using iTunes watching some videos. I then opened a movie with QTPro full screen, and the screen was pixillated and grainy compared to before the update. I went to movie properties info pane, and noticed that the "use high quality when avail." option was NOT selected (under movie properties). I clicked this, and the quality improved. I then had to SAVE the movie (with dual extention including .mov).
QT used to have this selected as default and I never had to re-save the video. I went under QT preferences (not under movie properties), and made sure "use HQ video setting when avail" was checked--it was.
So, I have about 100 movies that I now have to RE-SAVE after checking the properties HQ box? This is quite tedious and cumbersome. Is there a way to go back to OLD settings? Should I uninstall QT Update and reinstall? Or is this the method mac is now advocating as standard protocol?
I love my "easy" to use mac and QT. But this seems out of norm for QT software. HELP?!
iMac 17inch flat-panel PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   QT pro, latest software updates

I've noticed that the mpg-4 videos are most dramatically effected. My iTunes downloaded TV/movie/videos are all fine. I do not notice a change in quality checked or unchecked with those specific formats.
Yah, I know it shouldn't have caused an issue, but quite coincidental as I've been using QT for over 2 years now and through all the updates and improved versioins never had a problem.
I guess stranger things have happened and it could be circumstance! LOL!

  • Boot Windows AND FreeBSD from my MacBook Pro 8,3 using an external DVD drive. I'm considering to remove my DVD-ROM and replace it with an SSD drive. That doesn't seem to work. Why not?

As the title says, I'm attempting to boot off my favorite operating systems, Mac OS X, Windows 7 and FreeBSD from an external DVD drive. However, for some odd reasons, booting the Windows DVD and FreeBSD 9.1 install DVD from the external drive does not seem to work. I was able to create a bootable USB with the Windows installer, but whenever I attempt to do the same with FreeBSD, I only get an error message that says "No bootable device -- press any key to restart." Is this a limitation that Apple deliborately created? If so, why won't Apple let its customers do whatever they please with their computers, considering that customers who want to change the hardware and/or operating systems knows what he is doing, without having to worry about some silly Apple limitations?
If I sound rude, I apologize for that, as no impoliteness is intended from my side.
In advance, thanks. Have a wonderful day, everyone.

That is only partially correct at best.
When you are booting off Windows or any other operating systems that usually don't support EFI (including Windows), your Mac uses something called CSM-BIOS. And as long as that CSM-BIOS implementation on EFI-based Mac do not support booting off from USB (note that Mac OS X Installer works fine when booting from USB), not even a USB Apple SuperDrive which once was an internal drive, there mot definately is something for Apple to fix.
When attempting to install Windows via BootCamp, a somewhat hybrid GTP/MBR table is created. When you boot off the installer disc of the OS you intend to install (i.e. Windows 7, FreeBSD, etc), your Mac might not support the EFI boot option (at least my 2011 17-inch MacBook Pro doesn't support that), so the only way of booting that second OS installer is via the regular BIOS, which Apple's EFI based systems implement as CSM-BIOS.

At least twice the size does not mean exactly the doubled size.
There is no contradiction between the documentation and your observation in this case.

Then your preferences are not being saved.
Assuming you actually quit Photoshop (instead of shutting down the machine) - your preferences should be saved whenever you exit Photoshop.
Most likely your preferences folder has the wrong permissions and the preferences are not being written on exit.  What OS version are you using?

  • Why is Firefox button not default for Windows XP?

I know that the Firefox button can be shown on Windows XP too by hiding the Menu Bar. But why is it not default? If Windows XP users do not know that Firefox button can be shown by hiding Menu Bar, they will not only not be able to access the Firefox button but will also not be able to enjoy tabs-on-titlebar. Describe Mozilla why it is not default???

One thing to keep in mind about Chrome is that Google started with a clean sheet of paper in ''(what?)'' 2008 when creating a new browser. Firefox has roots from Netscape in 1995, so some of the Gecko base code is pretty old. Plus, Google has a helluva lot more money to spend on developer ''(some of whom have been hired away from Mozilla)'' salaries, where many Mozilla developers are from the "community" and are unpaid volunteers.
I am running the nightly Minefield 4.0b13pre development version on WinXP and don't see tabs in the titlebar as with the Vista and Win7 version screenshots I have seen. With a "stock" Profile, when I hide the Menu bar and select the menu item for Tabs on Top, the only thing in the Titlebar is the Firefox button on the left side of the Titlebar. There are no Tabs in the Titlebar. ''Maybe there is something that I don't understand about the tabs-in-titlebar feature in 4.0??''
As it is with WinXP that is very unappealing to me, so I have a few Profiles that I am playing with that have different modifications that make better use of the Titlebar area. In one Profile I have all my addon Toolbar buttons in the Titlebar - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/personal-titlebar/ - which places anything that is on the Menu bar into the Titlebar when the Menu bar is hidden.
Overall, I haven't used the Menu bar since like 2004 - to me it was always a waste of one toolbar worth of browser viewing area "real estate". I have been using the Compact Menu extension, and the various CM replacement extensions over the years since, to reduce the Menu bar items down to one button on the Nav bar that provides a drop-down menu, which can be activated with the '''Alt''', as the Firefox button / Menu bar now works. ''It could be said that I have been using the Firefox menu button for 7 years now - LOL.''
No browser that I have seen, except for Chrome, doesn't have an option to show a complete Menu bar - removing it completely would be a huge mistake, the option to hide is good enough. Firefox 4.0, Opera 10 & 11, along with IE8 did it a lot better than Google, IMO.
Between Google forcing that damn "updater" program on their users and not having a Menu bar at all, it's gone from my XP desktop and I haven't used it in any months on my Linux netbook.

One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • Cannot boot from USB HD on T61 & T61P Why not?

Have bootable WD and Hitachi HDs in external USB enclosures.  Have successfully cloned one of these WD) using Acronis.  When trying to boot from the USB attached drive using PF12 and selecting the recognized drive on the boot menu get either BSOD or message unable to boot operating system.  What gives?  Know the WD will boot internally as it was the disk that came with the system.  Get the BSOD with this disk in USB port.
Hitachi give me the unable to boot operating system message when trying to boot from USB drive.
Using a TrekStor HD enclosure pn D260U20P10-3 which works fine if I boot the internal HD.  Can copy and even backup internal drive to external HD but can not boot from it.

    Hello,
As I understand it, Microsoft Windows 7 and earlier operating systems do not support booting natively from a USB Mass Storage Controller interface.  The installers do from things like USB-attached optical disc drives and flash drives, but that's not the full operating system.
Support for booting from USB in the main operating system environment might be introduced in Windows 8—I thought I read something about this, but cannot seem to find a reference right now.

  • OSX No Longer Default Boot - Have To Boot With "Option" Key

I tried to dual boot my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (running Mavericks 10.9.5) with Windows 8.1 Pro using mac's "Boot Camp Assistant".
Everything went fine until I entered the Windows Set-Up and then had to cancel it (because I can't find my Product Key). Thats fine, I was just trying out the dual-boot feature - I don't care if I cannot get Windows to work.
PROBLEM: Now, every time I restart my computer, I have to do it while holding the Option key, or else I get the message:  No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key
When I hold the Option key, I only have the option to boot into the regular Mac OSX, so Im not sure why it is not booting into by default.
I re-partitioned my HD to not have the Windows partition on it at all, and when I go back into Boot Camp Assistant I do not have the option to "remove Windows partition", but I still have to hold the Option key when I turn on my Mac to actually boot into my OSX.
Basically, how do I make OSX my default boot like it was before (as it is the only one on the HD)?
    Thanks!

Yea, that's the disk that you are supposed to select as startup disk as it contains files that boots your OS X
recovery partition usually has the word RECOVERY labeled on the recovery partition along OS X it's usually labelled
    something like 'OSX RECOVERY'

  • {Solved} Can not successfully boot into systemd

I will first start off by saying I have read though the following threads:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151633
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151885
And have tried to follow the Systemd wiki.  I started out by switching to the new initscripts configuration system.  I have the current systemd package installed.  I then installed systemd-sysvcompat which of course had me remove sysvinit.  I then removed initscripts which moved my rc.conf to rc.conf.pacsave.
I had to manually create /etc/hostname, /etc/locale.conf, and /etc/vconsole.conf as (mentioned in a previous post) I could not do with any "ctl" commands as I had not yet booted into a systemd setup.
This also caused an issue with trying to set up the timezone as:
    # timedatectl set-timezone America/New_York
    resulted in:
Failed to issue method call: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
So at this point I decided to try a reboot and I get:
Welcome to emergency mode! Type "systemctl defualt" or ^D to enter default mode.
Type "journelctl -b" to view system logs. Type "systemctl reboot" to reboot.
    Give root password for maintenance
(or typed Control-D to continue): [ 71.520184] radeon_cp: Failed to load firmware
    "radeon/R300_cp.bin"
[ 71.520205] [drm:r100_cp_init] *ERROR* failed to load firmware!
    [ 71.520224] radeon 0000:01:05.0: failed initializing CP (-2)
    [ 71.520237] radeon 0000:01:05.0: Disabling GPU acceleration
I entered emergency mode which brought me to the root terminal.  I first attempted to mv rc.conf.pacnew to rc.conf expecting there to possibly be an issue with the daemons I had running or attempted to run but after reboot I got the same thing.  Not sure what is going on with the radeon firmware because it's obviously there.
So I re-imaged the hard drive and decided to try again.  This time I installed systemd-sysvcompat (removing sysvinit) and DID NOT remove initscripts.  I rebooted and got the exact same thing as above. So at this point I am at a loss of ideas with moving forward.  Why is systemd-sysvcompat causing the failure of the radeon firmware to load? I use Arch on my laptop, desktop as well as my server.  Systemd is coming so I am trying with the laptop first to convert to pure systemd.  If I am just missing a step please let me know and I appologize for posting.  But hopefully others have run into this issue and could possibly give me a nudge in the right direction.  It could be I am reading the wiki wrong or just not interpreting it correctly.
Thanks in advance for your guidance and assistance,
    All the best,
    Ian

    hiciu,
Here is what you requested taken from emergency mode:
    /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
    # vim:set ft=sh
    # MODULES
    # The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
    # run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
    # in this array. For instance:
    # MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
    MODULES=""
    # BINARIES
    # This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
    # wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
    # override the actual binaries included by a given hook
    # BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
    BINARIES=""
    # FILES
    # This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
    # as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
    # Some users may wish to include modprobe.conf for custom module options
    # like so:
    # FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf"
    FILES=""
    # HOOKS
    # This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
    # modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
    # Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
    # order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
    # help on a given hook.
    # 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
    # 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
    # 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
    # Examples:
    ## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
    ## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
    # HOOKS="base"
    ## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
    ## work as a sane default
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems"
    ## This is identical to the above, except the old ide subsystem is
    ## used for IDE devices instead of the new pata subsystem.
    # HOOKS="base udev autodetect ide scsi sata filesystems"
    ## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
    ## No autodetection is done.
    # HOOKS="base udev pata scsi sata usb filesystems"
    ## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
    ## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
    # HOOKS="base udev pata mdadm encrypt filesystems"
    ## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
    # HOOKS="base udev usb lvm2 filesystems"
    ## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
    # usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata filesystems usbinput fsck"
    # COMPRESSION
    # Use this to compress the initramfs image. By default, gzip compression

Edit:  I also wanted to mention that I was able to get rid of the syslog-ng errors previously mentioned by performing:
    systemctl enable syslog-ng.service
Then rebooting.  Granted I was still put back in emergency mode but was able to fix one issue.

  • [Sol 10 11/06 SPARC on Sun Blade 2500] Could not determine boot disk?

    dear all,
I have a problem during installation of Solaris 10 11/06 Sparc on Sun Blade 2500. After I choosing "Initial Install" at "Select Upgrade or Initial Install" stage, appears the following error message :
"Note : Default install is not possible. Default boot disk could not be determined"
I have already concerned that the installation DVD is well burned, and the DVD-ROM is worked, but I'm not sure that the HD itself is well or defect. Could anyone tell me or figure out how would I do?

Most likely you have a disk problem. I think it may not have found a disk. If the install process left you in a shell, I would suggest using format, to see what it thinks. My guess it does not see any disks.
Another option from the ok prompt (also called OBP), is run probe-scsi or whatever the device type it. Check the options available at the ok prompt.

    Hey DBT,
SQL Server 2014 Express supports your operating system.
You can see the link below the requirements for each version: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx
Did you try to restart the computer and then try installing again?
There are users that it helps them, it might solve the problem but preventing them expect an error and understand why it happens.
Sometimes it appears as a result of lack of .NET Framework (check the Microsoft article if you meet the requirements before installation).
If you are interested to View and Read SQL Server Setup Log Files
I've provided you a link that explains simply how to do this.
