Why, oh why, won't my music go on my iPod?!

So here's the deal. I had an iPod that worked fine about two years ago, and then it suddenly and mysteriously died about six months ago. Because of my warranty, Apple replaced it. Since then, I have not been able to get it to work. I've been lazy about it but now I am intent on getting it to work!
When I plug my iPod into my computer's USB drive, nothing comes up. In My Computer, it doesn't show that the iPod is even there. The one time I did get the iPod to come up on my computer, something came up about the program needing to be restored to factory settings, so I pressed restore and then it said "Can't be mounted" or something like that.
My iTunes works fine - I have plenty of music in there. My iPod itself seems to be okay - it turns on and charges and everything. But when I plug it in to my computer, it immediately says "Okay to disconnect" and nothing shows up on my computer.
What do you think is going on?? I would LOVE whoever can help me get my iPod working.

That answers the question right there. If you change the ID on the iPad and then download a Past purchase with that different ID, you lock the IPad into a ninety day period where you cannot use the other ID for downloading past purchases.
At least that is what I think you have done and there is nothing that you can do now except to wait until the 90 days go by and in your case you have 48 days to go.
This policy concerning automatic downloads and downloads of past purchases is to prevent theft - like one user trying to sign into a friends account and then download content using that ID. You can do that, but you lock yourself out of the other account - for automatic downloads and downloading purchases for 90 days. At least I think that is the way that this policy works and I think that must have been what you did - use another ID to download a past purchase.

  • Why won't the music work on my ipod?? please help me!!!!!!!!

okay, i plugged my ipod video into my friends computer, and since then over half of the songs on my ipod won't work! in itunes, they have a little exclamation point next to them, and on my ipod, when i try to listen to most of the songs it just skips through the songs until it finds one that works. what can i do to make them work again?? i would prefer not to have to start all over and take all the music off my ipod, because most of the songs in my library has a little exclamation point next to them also. please please help me!! i'm going crazy!

Unfortunately, I think that is probably your only option. the "!" is stating that the link between the music and the visual title on your iPod is broken and the iPod doesn't know where it is. Did you have auto-updating on for your music when you plugged it into your friends computer? And how did you remove it from the computer? If the iPod was still updating when you removed it, that could have caused it.

The computer has to be authorized for the account that purcchased the media.

  • Why won't my music play on my iPhone 4s?

why won't my music play on my iPhone 4s? it was playing thru the music app but now it's not playing. It show the song but doesn't do anything.

I had this issue when I first upgraded my Iphone4 to ios5.  All my music appeared on my device as they always have but they would not play.  I searched around online and it appears there was mention of unchecking the "sync music" check box in itunes under the music tab (when device is connected) and syncing your device.  I then unchecked all my playlists and synced again then started adding back my music from scratch.  After that headache - everything seemed to be back to normal and my music was working once again.

  • My ipod won't sync music because it says ipod does not support the music, although it previously downloaded the same music onto the ipod

    Newest ipod gen,
My ipod won't sync about 89% of my library because 'it doesn't support the song' but I previously had the songs on my ipod, downloaded from the same computer. Itunes on my computer had issues and I'm now re syncing all music. How do I get my music back on my ipod if Itunes says it can't be synced?
    Thanks!

In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you worked through the following document?

  • Why won't my music videos work on my ipod?

After downloading the new itunes 7, I found that my music videos and video podcasts (downloaded from the itunes store) were erased from my ipod and will no longer transfer to the ipod. I keep getting a message saying it can't download to my ipod but, why? I've had no problems before. Is there a solution to this problem?

I, too, am having problems with iTunes 7 and videos. I got the "cannot be read from or written to message". So I restarted the computer, reset the iPod and repaired permissions, then I got this message. "Some of the videos in your iTunes library were not copied to the iPod "Video iPod" because they cannot be played on this iPod." All these movies and TV shows worked perfectly well yesterday, but now iTunes removed them all from my iPod and will not sync them back. I have tried restoring the iPod software, and resetting the iPod but that did not fix the problem. Any ideas?

  • Why won't my music download on my ipad mini?

Can anyone tell my why I can't download my iTunes music to my ipad mini?

You should provide more exact symptoms.  What are you trying?  What is or is not happening?
With the miniscule information you have supplied, the causes could range from no WiFi connection to an Apple ID mismatch being used in syncing.  Those are just two possibilities that quickly come to mind.

  • Why won't my music copy in the order on the playlist?

    Hi,
Can someone help me please?  I am copying over my music (from my I Tunes library) for a dance class tonight and everytime I play it on my phone or Ipod the order comes out differently and it's jumbled up.  Why?
    Thanks

Is your playlist set to "Manual order"? Click the the left-most column header for manual sort. Then drag and arrange the songs to the order you want.
    Does that not work?

  • Why won't some music sync from iTunes to my iPhone 5?

I have purchased several items from the iTunes store with no trouble syncing and playing on my iPhone 4. Recently I purchased two iPhone 5's for myself and my son. His phone is synced to my iTunes account and can play all content. My phone initially synced all my music and comedy albums. Occasionally I would come across a song my iPhone music player refused to play. I would touch the song name, briefly see the song/album and it would flip back to my playlist/song list without playing or it would skip to another song. Sometimes skipping several songs in between and flashing quickly the song title.
To rectify this, I researched the problem on the forums and tried one of the suggestions of right clicking on the song in iTunes, converting the song to AAC and then deleting the original and re-syncing. After powering down and re-syncing, the 173 non-synced songs out of 808 purchased songs were no longer even on my phone.
I accessed the iTunes store through the app on my phone, found the non-downloaded songs in the cloud and manually downloaded them to my phone. Although I couldn't put them in the playlists I had created on iTunes (where they are checked and the playlist is checked for syncing) I did have them on my phone and they played perfectly. After my phone was plugged into a power source with iTunes open and my phone synced, the songs were once again missing from my phone.
I contacted Apple support and we spent some time trying different things:
    1) Selected tab under iTunes preferences for devices  "Prevent iPhone from syncing automatically"
    2) Reset all settings
    3) Backed up my iPhone for a restore - which we never did.
I spoke then with a senior support consultant and we then:
    1) Deleted the songs from my phone through Settings > General > Usage > Storage where my playlists remained but were empty.
    2) We re-synced all my checked playlists. The songs were still missing.
    3) On iTunes we selected "Sync all music". Songs were still missing.
    4) Went to iTunes Store via iTunes on my Mac, looked up purchases and downloads, re-downloaded missing songs (there were only six of them and happened to be the ones that I converted to AAC).
    5) Created new "Test" playlist and dragged two of the missing iPhone songs into it. Synced phone to include new playlist. Playlist appeared but was empty.
I had purchased two John Pinette comedy albums. One entire album will not sync and on the second, only two of the thirteen "songs" will sync. The support person asked if I wanted to change all of the m4a songs to mp3 and was going to show me how but when viewing the John Pinette "Still Hungry" album where the first and last song synced, they show the file ends with m4a, as do all of the songs that won't sync. This leads me to conclude that the file type isn't the issue, but that there is something corrupted with certain files from the iTunes store or a glitch that is incompatible with the IOS 6.1.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and have you been able to rectify it?

I have a similar problem and have spent three sequential days at the Apple Genius Bar before we were able to exclude most other possibilities and found that certain files (in my case all mp3s from CDs I own) that play just fine in iTunes 11.0.1 and that used to play in iOS 6.0.1 do not play in iOS 6.1. We restored the phone to factory settings and synced only a few of the music files that were problematic. They still did not play. We reproduced the problem on my iPad mini (iOS6.1).
Apple Telephone Support suggestion was to convert all mp3 files in iTunes to AAC (which according to Apple Website may degrade sound quality). No further suggestions or escalation but a recommendation to place comments on www.apple.com/feedback and, if there are enough complaints, someone at Apple might take an interest in this problem. Something has changed in iOS 6.1 where files that played on prior mobile system software no longer work.
Apple, please pay attention to this glitch with iOS 6.1.

  • Why won't my music sync on my iPhone 5 after updating to iOS 8.

When I try to sync my music not all the songs come over onto my phone. The player sees what should be there and then skips them.

I found a solution that worked for me. I had this same problem and I feel like I tried everything. No matter how many time I synced, the songs appeared to be on my phone, but they would just get skipped over if I tried to play them ("ghost" songs). The answer is not checking and unchecking artists/playlists/etc in iTunes. The phone still thinks the songs are there so it won't sync them to the phone. Here's what to do: go to Settings --> Music and then make sure "Show All Music" is off. Then go to the Music app and try to play through your songs. Now, when a song is skipped over it should no longer appear in the iPhone's library. Once all songs are skipped (could take a few minutes depending on the size of your library), the "ghost" songs will disappear. On the next sync iTunes will put them all back on the phone. Hope this helps.

  • Why won't my music sync to my iPhone 5?

All of a sudden my iPhone 5 won't sync to my iTunes. I've tried everything.

  • WHY WON'T MY MUSIC SYNC TO MY IPHONE???

I have bragged about Apple for years.  I've sunk thousands of dollars into Apple devices, as well as apps, music and movies from iTunes.
Now, all of a sudden, I'm having a slew of issues.  First my movies - purchased from iTunes - wouldn't play correctly on my computer.  The picture and sound fall out of sync.  I spent 20 minutes on the phone with a friggin' SUPERVISOR and we still couldn't fix it!  It's not space issues - I'm not even using one quarter of my hard disk space.  I did everything he told me to do and they still won't play.
Guess what happened today?  I'm getting the ridiculous "-50" unknown error message when trying to sync music I purchased FROM iTUNES onto my iPhone.  Oh, it plays just fine on my computer.  I had several of my playlists loaded onto my iPhone already.  I visit the forums, and everyone says I should reinstall iTunes and restore my iPhone - so I do those things.  Now all of those playlists need to be put back on to my phone and NOTHING WILL SYNC TO MY PHONE!!!
I am one VERY short step away from ditching Apple forever.  I am sick to death of having to deal with constant issues.  Everything worked great until a couple of months ago, now you people cannot do anything to fix the issues your incompetent techs are causing.

    Hello alexandreak,
It sounds like your newly purchased music is not syncing your your iPhone.  I found a couple of resources that I think might help with this.
One thing you may want to consider is downloading the purchased songs directly to your iPhone.  You can find the steps to do that in the section titled "iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" in the following article:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
If you prefer to sync the music to your iPhone using iTunes, I recommend turning off and turning on syncing music.  You can do this by unchecking "Sync Music" and then clicking "Apply" and then checking "Sync Music" and then clicking "Apply" again. You can find the syncing steps in the following article:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12313
Additionally, it is important to note that songs with a cloud icon next to them in iTunes are streaming from iTunes and are not on your computer.  For these songs to sync to your device, you will need to clck on the cloud icon to download the song to your computer first.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.
