WHY ON EARTH!!

why is the software upgrade free for iPhone users but not for iPod touch's????
it is the LEAST useful to us yet we have to pay so much for it.
does anyone know if they are going to change this any time soon? because i really want to use some applications but they stupidly say that i need the new software to use them.
I really don't want to have to waste my money on something that isn't really gonna help me all that much.
Please APPLE change this- why are us iPod touch users not equal to the iPhone users???

There's a very long thread discussing the subject here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2044285

You get exactly the same features as iPhone users except for phone related features (or ones dependent on hardware the iPod touch doesn't have), which I guess if you wanted those you would've bought an iPhone. And $10 is not a lot.
why are us iPod touch users not equal to the iPhone users???
because iPhone users are paying $40 - $150 *per month*, that iPod touch users don't pay.
I really don't want to have to waste my money on something that isn't really gonna help me all that much.
Don't waste your money then. If you are happy with v2.2.1 there is no obligation to upgrade. But obviously, if you want to take advantage of applications that use v3.0 features, then clearly it is "really gonna help you".

This "error note" must have something to do about it?

    elppaelo,
    You may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Why on earth use nested tables?

    Hi
I'm boning up on PL/SQL (again) in anticipation of getting a new job.
I have many years of experience in various data-related roles, many of which used Oracle.
On the issue of collections, I find myself asking, in the light of my experience, and not for the first time, why on earth would anyone want to do this:
    create or replace type TEST_TT as table of varchar2(10);
    create table TEST_TABLE ( X number
                             ,Y test_tt)
nested table Y store as Y_TABLE;                      I really, really, can't think why we would want to store data like this. It seems to me to be unnecessarily complex, hiding a one-to-many relationship inside TEST_TABLE, which should instead be modelled and implemented as a separate table.
Furthermore, there are loads of tutorials on collections that tell us how to do the above (indeed I am reading Feuerstein at this very time) but nobody seems to say WHY we should do this.
    Can anybody help me here?
    Thanks.
    Jason

For As you have surmised, just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. If you are only working with your standard relational data, such as the example you provide, it has many drawbacks and few, if any advantages.
It is easier to understand why that capability exists from the viewpoint of the question: why SHOULDN'T you be able to store data like that?
In one sense it is just another object-oriented feature. You can create object types and pass them around to procedure/functions or external processes (e.g. JDBC) so why shouldn't you be able to store that set of related data as an encapsulated object?
Why do you need an object type that has a set of columns? You can just as easily put those columns into a table. But how do you manipulate a subset of the columns or rows of a table? How do you pass that data around as a controlled, coherant set of data? You can't.
With an object type you can, though most often don't, implement encapsulated business rules that ensure that any instance of that type MUST implement. Need ADDRESS information that is required to include a street address, city, state and zip? Create an object type with the right constructor methods and you can ensure that those attributes CANNOT be null.
Once you have functionality to create and manipulate objects why not be able to pass those objects around and stored them in a table? Doesn't mean you should always store them that way but why not be able to? There isn't any reason to limit that functionality simply because you don't think it is the best practice to use it all the time.
So if you have a small dataset and want all of that data to 'travel' together nest it. There is no child table to create or foreign key to create.
I put that functionality in the category of CAN DO but DON'T DO except in rare occasions and consider it a fallout of the move to object-oriented things in general. I like the fact that Oracle makes functionilty like that available when they have it.
Like dynamic sql, materializeds views, bitmap indexes and much other functionality it is often more important to know when NOT to use it than it is to know when to use it.
Relative to 'best practices' of why NOT to do that for your basic relational data see this part of the article that Justin referred you to:
    >
    Followup March 3, 2003 - 6am Central time zone:
    1) they are parent child tables in disguise but ones that add:
a 16 byte raw with a unique constraint on the parent table. Most likely you ALREADY HAVE a primary
key on the parent table and most likely it is smaller.
a 16 byte raw that you need to index on the child (not auto-indexed, you need to know to do it).
This is the foreign key and is hidden from you.
The inability to put many types of constraints on the nested table..
They are simple parent/child tables - except you lose the ability to access the child table
    directly.
    2) you are NOT storing anything in a "single row". Physically they are a parent child table pair,
    nothing more, nothing less
If you have my book "Expert one on one Oracle" - I write about them in there, describe their
implementation and talk about when I would use them.

  • HT4623 Why on earth don't you tell people to back up contacts and photos before they update software? There was no mention of the need to back up until it was too late. I have lost hundreds of valuable phone numbers and photographs.

Why on earth don't you tell people to back up contacts and photos before they update software? There was no mention of the need to back up until it was too late. I have lost hundreds of valuable phone numbers and photographs.

The update process DOES back up contacts and photos, unless you interrupted the backup. The manual tells you to sync contacts to an app on your computer, and to import photos regularly to your computer. So Apple DID tell you to back up, you just didn't bother to read it.
If you didn't sync yet (and even if you did) connect the phone to your computer, right click on its name, and choose "Restore from Backup". If there's more than one backup choose the one with a timestamp before you updated.

  • Why on earth is there no free print ability?

What gives?  If the only solution from the company is to buy someone ELSES print app ... seems to me they left out something.  Sort of like leaving off the mirrors in your car.  Why is there no real outrage here?  Doesn't anyone else WANT to use this for business?

This was a question about an expensive product and the ability to do business work on it from those of us using it as such.
You specifically asked "Why on earth is there no free print ability?" - copied directly from the subject of this thread.
There is a "free print ability". It's called AirPrint.
Apple doesn't make printers. It is up to the printer manufacturers to incorporate AirPrint in their printers (lots do), or provide an iOS specific app for printing (like they would provide drivers on a regular computer).

  • Why on earth the 8443?

What best can you do over the last bit of Friday? Yeah, you discovered that the SQL Azure team decided to use 8443 as the port number, and ALSO, your office firewall is blocking the outbound for that port, (yes, IT policy does exist, there is no way for
you to persuade your IT guys to open that for you, only for you, apparently.)
So while other teams happily using 443 for us developers, why on earth this 8443? At the end of day, this is supposed to be HTTPS REST access purpose, right?
    Best,
    dong

    Hello Dong,
I know its almost 2 years later but by any chance did you ever find a way around this? I am now hitting a very similar problem:
Port 8443 for HDInsight Management API. Why?

  • Why on earth is my (fairly new) mbp slowing down

I purchased 15" mbp last September... am running 10.6.6
it's always slowing dow now..  and I get that **** color wheel that spins and spins...  and while it's spinning I can't switch apps or do anything else.. this really drives me nuts -- and ****** me off..  didn't expect this malfunction from a machine that cost me as much as this one did...  :-(
machine has 4GB RAM...  I have done the disk permission thing, it fixes problem somewhat, but doesn't last long, after just a day or two the color wheel is back..  one time it got fixed with the sw update, but that also didn't last more than a week.. this *****..  what is causing this malfunction please...  I thought after I switched from pc to mac I wouldn't have to deal with this kind of problem any more..  ha...  I guess the joke's on me....

thank you all for your responses..   I restarted after I posted this..   and then everything was cool again..  of course it's nothing but a good old memory problem....;-)  I now use the Activity Monitor, I have it in dock and open it all the time to monitor memory usage..  before I was just keeping apps open for ever, always had lots of apps open (including Photosop and Adobe Bridge...  Firefox also consumes a lot if you have lots of tabs open..) I had just thought that 4GB of memory was more than it was, I guess..  I had a pc before I purchased this MBP, also with 4GB of memory, and as far as I remember it never slowed down like this..  (but well, it was a Vista machine, and god knows I had so many other problems w/it..  it was a total nightmare....;-)
so I gues now I just manage the memory situation better and it seems ok...  if I had known this I would have purchased the MBP with 8GB of memory (sometimes I use Photoshop extensively, for days.. something I haven't done yet since last restart...  so situation seems fine for now...;-)
I also wanted to ask, can anybody recommend where I can buy the best/cheapest memory online?  (it's cheaper online, yes?)  unfortunately my MBP comes with two chips of 2GB instead of one of 4GB (why do they do this??)  so I have to buy two chips of 4GB...   it's a 15" MBP running 10.6.8, was purchased last September....
and to person who mentioned the Desktop clutter issue:  I'm very adamant about not keeping clutter and junk on the Desktop..  I even have a little app called TinkerTool (that of course I found out about here..;-) that I use to config sys so screenshots land in a folder of my choosing inside Documents folder....
    thank you very much...

  • Why on earth is 1GB $50 and 20GB $150????? That does not make any sense.

I was just reading this article:
Verizon unwittingly reveals price discrepancy in Share Everything plans - New high tier plans show price gouging on lower tiers
    http://www.techradar.com/us/news/mobile-phones/phone-and-communications/mobile-computing/tablets/internet/verizon-unwittingly-reveals-price-discrepancy-in-share-everything-plans-1091705
Am i missing somerthing? no wonder people are livid... what greed!

Why on earth? Because Verizon (and soon AT&T as well) are very good at capitalizing on peoples' ignorance. That's NOT to say people are STUPID, but they don't have a feel for exactly what they are buying with these data caps. I can't count how many times I have walked into a VZ store, heard a rep tell someone $30 for 2 Gig or whatever, and the customer just looks starry-eyed back at him and asks: "But how much IS that though?" This is a serious vulnerability to price gouging in this digital age of 5-10 Gig DVDs and 1 Terabyte hard drives. Not to mention video streaming at 1.25 Gig per 2 hour movie.
Bulk discounts are one thing (that's how economy of scale works) but inconsistent data pricing that's all over the map is quite another thing altogether. $50 for 1 Gig..$30 for 2 Gig...$60 for 2 Gig...$30 for 4 Gig..$50 for 4 Gig....$70 for 4 Gig...$40 for 300 Meg (!!!!). Yes, ALL of these prices currently exist as part of Verizon's pricing models on one plan or another.
Verizon's CFO has himself said to his own investors, that these sharing plans were intended to be "profit-generating engines." Indeed they certainly are. But not at MY expense, thank you very much.

  • Why on earth did apple replace the color icons in aperture with monochrome icons!

I really do not like the look of the new monochrome icons. The interface looks broken and buttons are hard to find. Why did apple do this? Please Apple, give users a choice between monochrome and color icons!

Look at the more like this at the right of this post. There are many threads on this.
It's the new design since Lion - Iphoto already has gone gray before Aperture See these links:
Re: After updating to Aperture 3.3 all my icons appears in Black and white. This includes the inspect button, photo stream button, the Facebook / flicker share button. Could you please help here ?
How to bring back the color: (for experienced users only)
Re: Have today loaded the 3.3 up date on Aperture. After the up date the colour of the Menu Bar and all icons showing projects / albums etc are now grey. Any thoughts on how to reestablish the colours.
Send feedback to Apple from the main Aperture menu bar:

  • HT201342 this makes me insane.  I was perfectly happy to live out the rest of my days with my .mac address.  Then I had .me foisted on me.  MobileMe.  Now iCloud.  Why on earth couldn't these idiots be happy with what we were already paying for?

Why do they keep monkeying around with this?

From iCloud: Using your @icloud.com email address:

  • WHY GOOGLE EARTH FOR MAC DOES NOT INSTALL ON MY MAC?

I downloaded Google Earth for MAC from official site; worked fine for a week. Then it crashed. No use trying to reinstall: it crashes as soon as the black sky with stars desktop appears.
I trashed original download and downloaded a new one (always from official site). Same results.
    Any clue?
    Thanks in advance.

There are 120 items with plist extension.
The nearest things to apps preferences (plist) I found in the finder, were a couple of .globalPreferences.plist different in date and a .globalPreferences.(numbers and letters).plist.
Emptied in the trash and rebooted.
Same items now show today's date, and Mac is apparently OK except for need to reconfig mouse and language....
    Reloaded Google Earth.
    Same early crash at launch.
    ???Any idea???
Thank you for your quick response and help!

  • After installing yosemite and the latest version of iPhoto all my photos want missing. I have tried everything but my library is empty. Why on earth apple changed iPhoto. It wasn't broken who fix it. I am seriously consider to get ríd of my iMac

Yosemite made all my photos dissapear

Which version of iPhoto did you upgrade from?  What happens when you try to launch iPhoto? Do you get any warnings, when iPhoto upgraded the library?
I have tried everything but my library is empty.
    What have you tried already?
Where did you store your iPhoto library? On an external drive or your system drive?
iPhoto will create a new, empty library, if it cannot open or find your previous iPhoto library.
If you upgraded from iPhoto '08 or earlier, the iPhoto library needs to be prepared with iPhoto Library Upgrader. See this link:    iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
If you got error messages during the upgrade of the library, restore your iPhoto Library from your most current backup.

  • I bought an iPhone charger 3 months back its covering has torn out again. I had the same problem with my previous chargers and now this has started getting on my nerves. Why do your chargers suck so much, and why on earth don't do you guys anything?

I mean seriously, stop working on your earplugs and look at the cheap quality of your chargers. I'm really really disappointed with apple. I have always loved apple and been an i-gadget freak but your chargers just bring my spirit down. GO WORK ON YOUR CHARGERS AND MAKE THEM STRONGER. Because even you know that apple's going down now and if you still have these shrude means of giving away cheap chargers so you can make more money (by making people replace them every once in a while) then you're gonna fall down to the ground because there are better phones and you have competition.

If you would like to tell Apple about you're issues click here - http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

  • Why on earth am I getting Yahoo coming up on search results - I don't want it!!! Change this madness

I have found a way using about:config to remove and put back to Google, however nothing has changed. From researching it seems that this is something that we have had no choice about, you have made yahoo an embedded article within Firefox - this is outrageous and totally unwanted by myself and many others - you should be ashamed - Yahoo even tells me that it has not authorised Hotmail or Google when I try and login into my hotmail and I have to get around that after being warned it might be harmful - I am livid with you guys, I have used Firefox for years and am astounded at this cheek! Change it back so we have a choice, meantime I am deinstalling Firefox, a trusted browser for years :(

Thanks for the response. I am 100% I only downloaded Firefox via Mozilla and I make sure every time that I check off any boxes that offer to give me Ask, Bing, Yahoo or any of those.
This link gives the exact issue and how to resolve, however, it has not solved it for me and Firefox still reverts to Yahoo search results.
    This is not good!

  • Why on earth do we have to go to a webpage and download the software first ???

With all respect, it is as annpying as it can get.
Every time when I try to upgrade or update Adobe Flash Player , I have to come to a page and download the software first and install it, and it will pop up another window just to tell me my Adobe Flash Player is up to date, and tells me the version of the Adobe I have.
I am absulutely sure, there are a lot of smart people in Adobe.com; can't any one of them stand up and say let's update just like the rest of softwares out there !?!?!?!?! ....
I mean I don't have to go to Java almost ever; I don't have to go to Skype, I don't have to go to Real player, I don't have to go to VLC.... I can keep listing the softwares that it supports automatically upgrade from the software itself without taking us to website every single time !!!
Even if it's some kind of business strategy, it does not amke too much sense. Please listen to some users, if I am the only one having this problem, I stop complaining about it, and stop updating/upgrading it.
Otherwise, as you ask for our feedback, please consider our feedback, and add direct update/upgrade feature.
    Thank you in advance.

Minor version updates (e.g. from 11.7.700.169 to 11.7.700.191) will update silently in the background.
Major version updates (e.g. from 11.7 to 11.8) will have to be downloaded manually.  This is a business strategy; it has to do with the 3rd-party bundled software.  Unfortunately the Adobe staff who frequent this forum have no power to change Adobe policy; and the policy makers do not read this forum.
