Why PDF's with transparency display incorrectly?

Hi everybody
I used this script ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/digitalpublishingsuite/articles/dps-pdf-to-indesign.html ) to create a magazine based on pdfs but I have a big problem.
The imported pdfs with trasparent elements display incorrectly but only in the vertical position as you can see in the images, in the horizontal and menu, display correctly.
I don't have control of the pdfs because the publisher send it already ready.
I used the v.22 for this pubblication because I can't update the app now but I installed the latest DPS tools.
Thanks in advance for help.

I know this is an old thread but i'd like to answer because it'll be helpful for someone looking for answers like I was today ;-)
This is an expected behavior for a PDF article. PDF Articles only supports transparency effects such as opacity and multiply, blending modes are not supported. However the same content if uploaded as a PNG/JPEG article should work fine.
It's also documented in this best practices document here Digital Publishing Suite Help | Best practices for creating overlays

  • How can I export a smallformat flatten PDF-file with transparant parts in?

My post on a PDF - more clear with images (english):

    Deze post in nederlandstalige versie:
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-nl.pdf
    Scope?
I'dd like to export an Indesign-file (.indd) to a PDF-file that has to be:
    - the smallest possible file size
    - which displays images and text sharp on the screen
    - which also certainly remain transparent parts of .psd-files after exporting
    - that is flattened for easy print
    The problem?
    ▪ How and with which of settings can I export such a file from InDesign 5.0?
    ▪ If necessary in combination with some settings (after exporting) in our Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
    Further explanation
The export file contains lots of text, graphics, photographs and drawings. Many of these items are .psd-files that contain transparent areas. The intention is that this transparent parts actually remain transparent even after exporting/flattening /decreasing the PDF.
    ▪ With InDesign 5.0?
→ In the window Export Adobe PDF: (images see: http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf )
Should I start from a default PDF preset   (if yes > which one??)
    Possibilities are: High Quality Print / PDFX-1a: 2001 / PDFX-3:2002 / PDFX-4:2007 / Press Quality / Smallest File Size
Or is it better to create a PDF preset on my own?     (if yes > which settings??)
    Standard > PDF/X-format?

    Hello,
I'm sorry you're having trouble. Unfortunately, this forum is for the ExportPDF service of Acrobat.com. The ExportPDF service functions as a PDF to *.docx file convertion and we can't help with problems specific to the desktop version of Acrobat or InDesign.  I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

  • Images with transparency display edge artefacts - What am I doing wrong, how can this be resolved

    Hi there
    Using MUSE CC 2014
I need to place photoshop images of text (with transparency) over a full screen slide show but I'm getting edge artefacts around the lettering which looks, well frankly, horrible. I don't recall previous versions of MUSE being quite as bad as this, am I doing something wrong? Is there a trick to overcome these ugly artefacts?
PSD Images are being imported SS
Many thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Vikas
I was dropping a pds file onto the stage. No other layers than image and transparent bg. I was scaling the image down in Muse which as I've discovered exaggerates the visibility of the image edge artefacts. After doing a bit of reading it appears this is a known problem with Adobe Muse, something to do with the algorithms Muse uses to scale images. I also think the colour of the layer contributed a little to the effect also.
Problem solved when I ditched the PSD route and instead imported the image SS as a PNG.

  • Adobe PDF Portfolio - Preview Mode Displaying Incorrect Pages

I have created a PDF portfolio using the “Grid” template in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. The Portfolio contains three pdf files. I am getting the following problem when I open the pdf Portfolio in Adobe Reader X and XI and Adobe Acrobat Pro XI.
    Open the PDF portfolio
    Click on pdf3
Preview mode displays the correct document and pages.
    Close the preview of pdf3
    Click on pdf2
Preview mode displays pages from pdf3,not pdf2 (see screenshot below).
    Some observations:
If pdf1 has two pages, and pdf2 has ten pages, pdf2’s preview contains pdf 1 (pages 1-2)  and then pdf2 (pages 3-10).
If I continue to open pdfs the preview contains pages from all the pdfs I have opened in the portfolio (this depends on how many pages the document I am currently previewing has). It is not just caching the last pdf opened.
Preview mode always displays the correct NUMBER of pages (i.e., if there are ten pages in a pdf, there will be ten pages in the preview. They will just be the wrong pages).
Turning off local page cache (preferences > page display) does not fix the problem.
Adobe Reader is up-to-date and Flash is up-to-date. I have replicated the problem on different computers, and in Adobe Reader X and XI, and Pro XI. I have also created muliple pdf portfolios from scratch to confirm the pdf portfolio itself wasn't corrupt.
Does anyone have an idea what is happening? Users are getting very confused when their preview shows them a completely different document.
    Thanks for any help

We have the same problem. Everything's up to date. Adobe needs to address this issue!! The portfolio feature is a great idea, but this glitch basically ruins it. If you come by this page with the same problem, make sure you leave a reply. Maybe Adobe will actually pay attention if there are enough complaints.

  • Why do non-flattened PDFs display incorrectly on PCs?

We have found that PDFs do not display correctly in Windows if they were generated from InDesign files with transparency layers on a Mac. They look fine in both Acrobat and Preview on the Mac, but not on Acrobat for Windows.  This problem shows up in multiple versions of Windows and Acrobat for Windows.
I understand how to resolve the problem by adjusting the flattening of transparent objects, but I want to more fully understand why it happens.
    1) Why can't Windows display PDFs with transparent objects without flattening them first?
    2) When generating PDFs from InDesign, is there a preferred method for avoiding this problem in the first place?
    3) On several occasions, print shops have had trouble with these same PDFs -- some element is missing, but not necessarily what was missing on the Windows computer. Is this also related to transparent objects?
Where can I, as a IT professional, learn more about this? It seems like this is a fairly widespread problem, but I'm having trouble really understanding what's going on.
    Thanks for your help!
    Eric

Thanks for your reply. I may have exaggerated by saying "widespread," but it's a problem in our agency as well as at least 7 other clients I do technical consulting for.
Not being a designer myself, I'm not sure what information would be useful. I'll ask one of our designers to create a document that exhibits these problems and upload it. Would that be helpful?

  • Why a pdf document with embedded fonts can be copied but is not searchable in pdf reader

I am writing a pdf files with embedded subset fonts. As required, I am including the ToUnicode and CIDSet objects. To test, I created a simple PDF with two Hebrew characters. I can select the two characters and copy to the clipboard, and paste it properly into another application such as Word. But I am not able to search for a word containing these two characters. Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) displays the message that the word was not found. So in essence, I have created a PDF document which can be copied properly, but is not searchable. Any idea what I might be missing when creating the document?
Additional information: 1. The file in question is a minimal file with just two characters. I have tested with many such files in many different languages including English. None of the files are searchable. 2. Curiously, if I search for the letter 'e', Adobe reader highlights an incorrect word, even if the letter 'e' does not exists in the file. 3. Adobe acrobat is also not able to search within this file, however when I save the file to another disk file, the saved file now is searchable. I confirmed that the major objects such as the font-file, ToUnicode object, CID object, and the font description objects are the same in the saved file. However, one of the font object is brought up closer to the top of the file. 4. FoxIt is able to search these files properly.

I figured the app might have that ability - considering you can add text, highlight, add a signature, annotate and draw - so my thought was why not delete a page, or rearrange for that matter?.. That should be an option, this way we don't have to export to one of the other apps to delete or rearrange..
    Thanks for the help, Bernd.
BTW if anyone is looking - PDF Max can do all of the above and delete and rearrange. With PDF Splicer you can delete and rearrange as well, but it has no other features.
And as for Steve Werner whose comment was deleted after it got to my inbox, it is much more than a Reader, as you can plainly see from the amount of tasks the Reader app can do above.

  • Odd Display of PDF Created with Pagesn '09

I create the monthly newsletter for a Macintosh user group, Capitol Macintosh of Austin, Texas (CapMac), using Pages '09. The newsletter is exported from Pages as a PDF and is then made available on the CapMac website <http://www.capmac.org/>.
A weird problem is that the newsletter displays as intended when viewed in Preview but not when viewed in either Adobe Reader or Acrobat. In Reader and Acrobat some of the included text displays as light gray and not the specified black.
I've found a weird work-around which is to change, in Pages, the text which displays incorrectly from black(#000000) to a dark gray. (#191919) and then re-export the PDF.
So, the question is am I dealing with an error in Pages or an error in Reader or Acrobat?
The version that is posted on the website has three instaces of text changed from black to dark gray. These are on Page 2 (the text between the bluebonnets), Page 7 (the article), and Pages 9 and 10 (the article)
Many thanks for any thoughts and/or suggestions..

    TaliesinSoft,
What you are looking at is an effect of color management where the black text has been changed to a cmyk mix that results in a dark grey.
Why it is happening selectively I can't say, I would have said in the case of the bluebonnet example because it is over the tinted background but then it has also done it on plain white background.
You could try saving the newsletter to a .ps file and using Acrobat Pro (if you have it) to convert the file to a .pdf using your own selection of color management and distiller settings.

  • Creating a PDF with Transparent Images

    Hi,
    Here is my problem:
I am using Acrobat 9. I design posters in another program. I print to PDF.
I design the poster and must put a logo in it with a transparent background. Note: If the poster background is white I never have any problems.
This poster has a pink background and hence I have to put the logo into the poster in a graphic type of gif or tiff or png to maintain transparency.
All is fine in my design program - transparency is fine etc.
I print to PDF (Acrobat 9.0) and the dreaded white box occurs. Note, I put an old version of the logo, one I cannot use, and it maintained its transparency fine. So this means that some gif files Acrobat 9.0 keeps transparency and some it does not.
So, in summary, I have tried all types of file formats gif, png, tiff and all types of programs to remove the logo background and save as one of the later formats and NONE maintain the transparency in the PDF output.
I have even tried saving the whole poster as a jpeg - but the quality was too poor to print.
I have used Word, Photoshop, MS Photodraw, Elements etc.
I have no idea why a gif I have from years ago works and one that I am creating now maintain their tranparency in the PDF.
I am under a deadline and am VERY worried this will not get done.
I am immensely grateful for any help - I have been at this for countless weeks and hours...
    Thanks,
    Elisabeth

I am using MS Publisher and even Word 2010 for poster design and have used multiple programs (and multiple formats that support transparency)  for logo editing - removal of background - Photoshop, etc.
I place logos, both gifs, with transparent backgrounds in a document and print PDF and one or none will show transparency - it makes no sense at all.
Most of the time the background is a white block. It couldnt be more frustrating.
It is a simple document/poster with just a few words of text and a logo...
Are there settings in Acrobat 9.0 that need to be turned on that I am missing. I had no trouble with Acrobat 7 - it worked EVERY time.
I was on  with tech support for 5 hrs and there was no knowledge of this - he just wanted to reinstall 7.0 which did not work.
Need ideas - overprinting is on. I noticed that flattening doesnt allow me to pick transparent objects - have no ideas if I am even on the right track.
Have read everything I can find online regarding Acrobat 9.0, PDF creation and transparent logo backgrounds.
    Sooo grateful for any help!
    Thanks,
    Elisabeth

  • Reader 11.0.07 does not display content of PDFs created with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.1

We use some PDFs created with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.1 which do not show any content when opened with Reader 11.0.07, only a blank display area or erratic copies of the screen behind it. Documents look fine in print preview though and also print correctly. Tried to change various security or display settings, no effect. Tried other machines, different hardware, different OS versions (Win7, Win8), same effect on every single device with 11.0.07 installed.
    Any ideas, anyone?!?

    Hi,
Not sure why you are resolving the node (??), also I would not be inclined to include a period in the object name (.), maybe this is why you are resolving the node.
Also I don't see in the script where you are calling the instanceManager, in order to use the addInstance method.
Having said that the problem may be in the File > Form Properties > Defaults tab:
Check that Preserve script changes is set to Automatic.
Lastly is the form Reader Enabled? It would need to be for users with Reader to save the changes, including new instances of a repeating element.

  • Changes to appearance of repeat swatch and gradient (both with transparency applied) when .ai saved in PDF 1.3 compatibility

I need to send a complex vector print to a commercial printer who requires my .ai file to be saved as 1.3 PDF compatibility.  All the graphics display & print correctly bar two elements:
    1. A gradient with transparency applied
    2. A repeat pattern swatch with transparency applied
Both of these elements are layered between a solid colour background and a complex array of vector art.
The gradient displays as solid white when converted to 1.3 PDF.  The pattern swatch displays partly white, with some elements of the pattern repeat visible as a watermark.
    1. I have tried to rasterise these elements within the a@rt, and while they both display correctly while in .ai format, as soon as I convert to PDF the appearance changes as above.
    2. I have tried to apply the transparency to the paint buckets on the gradient slider instead of applying it to the shape with gradient fil
    3. I've fiddled with the Transparency Flattening presets, Document Raster Effect Settings, and everything I can think of in the 'Save as PDF' dialogue box
    4. I've tried to rasterise the full file with an even worse outcome (all colour information lost, appears only on grey scale with fewer elements visible)
Could this have something to do with spot colours or overprint?  Any help would be most appeciated!
    I'm using:
Illustrator CC 18.1.1 (doc colour set to CMYK)
on a Macbook Pro OSX Yosemite Version 10.10.1
    Apple Preview Version 8.0 (859)

    Hi Mike,
Thanks for taking an interest! I tried rebuilding my gradient as suggested to see whether it would make a difference, but was still having issues.  Tried to save every which way with the save as PDF options in 1.3 profile.  Finally went back into the file to unpack each layer and see what I could adjust to save the appearance.
Found this fix in my swatches palette: for some reason the swatches I was working with had converted to "Book Colour", something I never use.  I changed the dropdown back to CMYK and changed the colours from spot to process, which fixed the file    Relief after hours of searching and late nights!
    Thanks again!

  • Export a PDF to an image with transparency

    Hello,
I'm trying to export a PDF (which contains a logo with 4 paths) as an image with transparency. In my case I use the PNG because it supports the transparency. As my logo is defined with paths it should be possible to create an image with transparency.
Maybe this is a limitation and Acrobat cannot create image wich supports transparency.
    Anyone have an idea?
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

    @Joe:
    That's a really pity.
Have you found any other software which can do this job.
I searched yesterday but didn't find anything.
    @Doc Maik
    b)
I have a (lot) PDF containing a single image which has a transparent background.
You can check that in Acrobat by menu: Edit - Preferences - Page Display - Show transparency grid
I need to have a PNG or TIFF (these two formats allow transparency) of that image.
That's all but as it seems to much for Acrobat to handle.
"Save as ..." doesn't work in case of transparency!
    Thanks anyway.
    Best regards
    Norbert
