Why Photoshop ...WHY!!

I’ve used photoshop in some capacity for at least 15 years now and together with autodesk’s Maya, it is one of the packages I verbally abuse most (and both deserve it imo). Now as a colleague rightfully pointed out  – we curse and moan, but do we ever let the developers know? Hence this post
I am probably woefully unaware of various of tools or tricks - if I am I would love to know - but I don’t care much for workarounds, if I paid that much I would want my software to WORK . But these are the some of the things that annoyed me in just one day of work:
(this is using CS5, if some of these are moot in later versions – my apologies) ..
- Why can I not fill or apply a filter to a layer that is hidden (with an annoying popup no less!), but things like brightness / contrast are allowed.
- Why is so much of the UI locked when settings windows are open (maybe I want to toggle a layer on / off while I am previewing my blur filter!)
- Make sure your foreground color is something other than black / white  / grey, select a layer mask (so your Fg / Bg colors now turn greyscale) then edit a gradient, add a point and see what color it turns out like – right, your original foreground color (even though you cannot see this anywhere in the UI), then in the color pulldown select foreground – black n white version again? Why?
- Why if I copy and paste a selection of a layer with transparency, does it paste it to the center of my canvas and not where it came from.
- Why do some filters have miniscule preview windows and don’t preview it on the entire image while others do.
- Why is the tolerance setting of the magic wand selection tool a textbox, why can’t it be dynamically adjusted after the selection has been made
- Why can’t I move the contents of a selection when I have layers linked (the whole layer moves for all linked layers regardless of selection)
- Why are some tools (like the polygon tool) artificially limited (to 100 sides? What if I want 180 ?)
- Why can I sometimes select the pivot of a Free Transform directly, and other times I have to hold Alt for it to work.
- Why can I only pan an image beyond certain boundaries? What if I have layers with images bigger than this and I want to transform them? What if I have a guideline further out and I want to nudge it a pixel, but I need accuracy so I don’t want to zoom out?
- Why is there no simple bend deform on a selection? (no, the lattice tool does not do the job)
Why are paths not hide-able like normal layers – why do the normal selection tools select the path (always) and not just let the path tools handle this, why is the only way to select something other than paths by hiding (ctrl H) which then cycles through varying states of (in)visibility of your selection and guidelines.
It seems some are to do with legacy tools that remained near unaltered through the versions, inconsistencies that grew after functionality was bolted on and plain badly implemented tools. To me though alot of these are fundamental parts needed for a consistent workflow.
Sorry .. I just had to get that off my chest
Cheers,
Elco

Thank you for your thoughts.
I'll add one more:  I wish they'd get to all the unfinished work, such as making all of the 8 bit-only filters work on deeper data.
I can understand the need to unload frustration, and there's a decent chance your thoughts will be seen by the right folks here, though there's even a better place (http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family).
I'm a software engineer, though not with Adobe.  I have some thoughts and questions:
- Why can I not fill or apply a filter to a layer that is hidden (with an annoying popup no less!), but things like brightness / contrast are allowed.
Can you list steps leading to the ability to apply Brightness/Contrast to a hidden layer?  Sounds like a bug to me, and I wasn't able to do it directly.  I'm assuming you've found an indirect way to do so.
<philosophical mode on>
Several of the things you describe are what most of us would consider just plain bugs.
Adobe seems to put a lot of effort into new features and when they get time (seemingly rarely) they address a few bugs.  But reported bugs (if they're not considered by Adobe to be egregious) can be seen to remain in the software for many major versions.  So long, sometimes, as to gain an inertia of their own, making future fixes even less likely as people grow to rely upon them.  I'm sure there must be a sign up somewhere at Adobe that says "One person's bug is another's feature."
Much as we'd all like to see everyone at Adobe take a deep breath and fix all the niggling bugs and unfinished features, Adobe clearly finds this "put off what's not absolutely necessary right now" strategy to work, selling version after version of hugely expensive software.  Hate to say it, but it's not likely to change - it's hard to argue with business success.
Photoshop is clearly an object-oriented system and its design structure was initially set during its early development, which as you can probably guess (given your long history with it) was some 2-1/2 decades ago.  By some accounts the Photoshop source code has grown over the years  to over 4 million lines of code.  That it's been able to withstand so many decades of development is testament to how good that original design structure must have been.  I'm sure Thomas Knoll and company strove to make it as capable and flexible as possible all through time, but there are just some things dependent on others that are reflected ultimately in what you are and are not allowed to do.
I suspect far more is involved with enabling combinatorial activities not currently allowed (such as hiding or showing a layer while doing a transform) than you might think - meaning in a practical sense it would be expensive and time consuming for Adobe, as well as potentially introducing major new bugs.  The basic design structure of a system this complex is not the kind of thing that can just be undone and redone from scratch on a whim, and as much as we might think throwing more engineering into the product or maybe even doing a rewrite might be justifiable given the millions/billions the product makes, Adobe just doesn't.

When importing RAW files in Photoshop why does camera raw 8.6 only import 1 size from canon 5d mark iii, in older versions I used to be able to import the files as larger images. It use to have a number of options for the images size. The option now is smaller than the maximum size used to be.

You know what - I'm sorry
I'd had a crazy long all-nighter session sorting out images for a client, then decided - when I should have simply gone to bed - to set up the new photoshop. At the very start I made a silly mistake, tried to sort it out then decided to call it a day, responding to your remarks with the problem still in my head but feeling more and more tired.
Responded again to your comment earlier with the problem still in my head but not in front of me on the screen - however with a fresh head I just turned it all on, opened up PS and today could instantly see what was going on - Oops!

Why Photoshop CC will close after 10 seconds after opening?

I seem to have the same problem, but following the link given above has only been partially successful.
It tells me to find a log file, and then to look up the error messages in a Knowledge Base. I've found the error messages, but the link to the Knowledge Base doesn't seem to lead anywhere very helpful.
The 'ERROR' from my most recent attempt to launch Ps reads:
    "08/17/14 21:13:53:333 | [ERROR] |  |  |  | RoyaltyTableParser |  |  | 1028 | Signature successfully validated for royalty table"
which on the face of it doesn't look much like an error. But I can't find this Knowledge Base to look it up. Most of the other lines in the log file are labelled as '[INFO]', though some say '[DEBUG]'.
    I'm running Win7 (64).

  • Why photoshop cc extensions menu is not selectable ?

why photoshop cc extensions menu is notselectable

It's a bloody disaster. I had a whole way of doing things resolved using a series of plugins and none of them are now available. I've been through every thread on here (and elsewhere) and the bottom line is that the whole thing is screwed.
I even spent hours following a process from an option under Help > Manage Extensions. Do yourself a favour, don't bother. It doesn't work, it just opens up the Extensions manager and no matter what you do, you cannot access the extensions at all.
    Thanks Adobe!

  • Why Photoshop still have objects out of our screen?

Can you tell me why our objects which are out of project after crop are still there? It's a rubbish every time.
For example. I have 100 objects in my project, then I cropped to only 4 objects, but look at my layers. There are still here and there are completely useless.
Why Photoshop is still catching useless objects? There are even not an "objects" because we can't touch and move them, we can't see them. We can only see their names.

If I assume correctly you want to take a bunch of crops of different parts of this document? If that's the case I wouldn't use the crop tool, I would use the rectangular marquee. Select the area you want, then copy merged (Ctrl+alt+C), then open a new document (the size will be to the size of your copy) and paste the single layer into the document. You can then save that as your cutout. If you plan on doing this a lot I would simply make an action that copy merged, open new, paste, and save for web

  • Office 2013 RTM: STILL no true small caps: WHY? WHY? WHY?

I have just un-installed the Office 2013 Preview, and installed the Office 2013 RTM 60-day trial.
I had hoped that between the two versions, the issue of missing true small caps in Word had been addressed. But no. Whilst Word 2013 supports OpenType ligatures and OpenType stylistic sets and OpenType old-style numbers and and and, it STILL DOES NOT SUPPORT
TRUE SMALL CAPS. Yes, it has a small caps function, but this just reduces the size of the font, instead of using the dedicated small caps letters included in a lot of OpenType fonts. What's the difference? The difference is that with true small caps, the stroke
width of upper case, lower case and small caps letters match, whereas in the cheapy, flimsy, yucky version that Office only offers, the small caps letters are thinner than the normal letters of that font - obviously so, as they are merely shrunken.
Try it for yourself. Type something like "AaMmXx" in an OpenType font with small caps, say, Calibri or Gabriola, at, say, 24pt, in Word 2013 and in Publisher 2013, and apply small caps in each, and print them. Compare the stroke widths. See what I mean?
Publisher does true small caps. Word doesn't.
So, why, Microsoft, why, oh why, oh why, when other typographical features (ligatures, stylistic sets, etc. etc. & so 4th) are supported in Word 2013, are small caps not? I just don't understand it. Why? Are small caps held to be something that only
professional typesetters should be allowed to use with typesetting programs like Publisher, whereas ordinary folk with Word shouldn't? Or is it trick to boost sales of Puiblisher? Or did no-one think about it? What is it? Because it's very annoying!

Well, in the second place, inserting characters via Insert Symbol is a pain in the posterior, and, of course, the spell checker doesn't recognise them. But in the first place, that only works if the font author has been thoughtful enough to give the small
caps glyphs Unicode code points, say, in the Private Use Area (like in Calluna). Normally, however, they don't - the small caps glyphs are only accessible via a small caps function, as lacking in Word. Excel is worse - apparently, Microsoft think that OpenType
advanced features ought not to be used in spreadsheets.
So having found fonts with small caps, the only way to use them is to use a font program either to assign the small caps glyphs to PUA code points, or to put them in a separate font (which at least means that other applications and spell checkers can use
    them).

There is a bug in the spellchecking functionality when typing in the web view or while using Blogsy App. Why? Why my IPad crashes so often?

I have always found spell check to be "buggy" in every version of all of the iOS's that I have run on my original model iPad and my new iPad - especially when replying and typing posts in these forums. It works perfectly in every other application on my iPad but it has never worked perfectly in any web browser that I have used on my iPad - no matter what I have done to try to correct it. That is what MY experience has been with spell check on my iPads.
As for the crashes on your iPad try these basic troubleshooting steps.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit all apps and restart. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • XAML Namespaces - Why Oh Why Is it "using:" Instead of "clr-namespace"?

Something's been bugging me for awhile now. I'm writing an application with both a Windows Runtime version as well as a WPF version for legacy users (sorry, but Win8 just doesn't have enough marketshare yet!)
Thanks to PCL and MVVM, I can re-use 90% of the C# code. Yippiee!
But the XAML is another story, and a HUGE part of that is the fact that in Windows Apps, identifying a XAML namespace requires "using:namespace.name" whereas in WPF, it's "clr-namespace:namespace.name"
I would be able to share a huge proportion of my XAML files between my two app versions if not for this seemingly arbitrary difference between the two platforms.
Why oh why was this done this way? Is there some technical reason MS does not wanting us sharing XAML files between platforms? Is there some best practice I'm violating by trying to do this?
By the way, for those who are interested, there is somewhat of a workaround. On the WPF side, if you keep your user-controls entirely in a different module (and they never refer to each other in their own XAML files), you can use XmlnsDefinition to
define your module's XAML namespace as anything you want. So I can actually then refer to the uc's namespace as "using:namespace.name." That way it compiles properly both in the WPF and Windows App projects. That is indeed what I've been doing and
now I'm sharing 90% of XAML as well.
Still, why oh why? Really, I'm not just trying to troll here. If there's a technical reason this was done and more importantly if there's a good reason I should not be attempting to share XAML code between WPF and App projects, I'd definitely like to know
    Thanks much.
    Peter

The thread I was thinking of is at
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsapps/en-US/7f492c62-4844-40e6-960c-27cbf076b812/how-do-we-file-a-change-request-on-the-xmlns-in-winrt-xaml?forum=winappswithcsharp
The UI design of WPF and of Windows Store apps is generally different enough that there wouldn't be a large overlap in Xaml. You'll generally want different layouts, many of the standard controls are different, and there are several other Xaml
features which differ between WPF and Windows.UI.Xaml.
It would be very useful to be able to share Xaml for custom controls and UserControls, and conditional compilation (#ifdef) for Xaml is a frequently heard request (although I don't see that obviously on
http://wpdev.uservoice.com , but I may just be failing at search).
I know some people do pre-processor tricks to fake this at the expense of being able to use the designer, but it's neither supported nor something I've looked into deeply.

  • Why, google, why? [solved - kind of]

let me preface by saying this is not a discussion about google and its practices, i dont want to start some kind of argument about privacy/paranoia
here is my situation.  I want to be able to open firefox, go to x.y.z webpage, and not have google loading for no reason.  let me describe what happens now.
    - open firefox (no homepage, no search box, no extensions).  netstat shows me no open connections.   so far so good.
    - visit archlinux, opens up "archlinux.org" (and lets say netstat shows me a connection to "archlinux.org" (I know that's not the actual server name)).  so far so good.
    - a few seconds into this, i see this:
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State User Inode PID/Program name Timer
    tcp 0 0 192.168.1.100:48738 iy-in-f100.google.c:www ESTABLISHED user 19146 3204/firefox-bin off (0.00/0/0)
ok so there's an open outgoing connection to google. why?  ok, i'm assuming (big assumption here based on other similar forums) that it has something to do with ads, or the search engine, or whatever.  I add the following to /etc/hosts:
    # [Google Inc]
    127.0.0.1 adwords.google.com #[Gmail ads]
    127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com

    127.0.0.1 www.googlecaches.com
(sorry if this seems wrong to some of you, this is my choice).  I also have noscript blocking everything it can on firefox.  close firefox, wait for all connections to close (60 seconds from what i've seen).  then run netstat again with the command
netstat -utoceewp (as root, though i dont think you need to be root)
the command above shows me the status/keep-alive timer of the connection.  well, the google connection has its timer set to off (which i take it to mean a persistent connection).  Why?
I close firefox, wait for all connections to close.  Ok, no connections again (other than ntp/smtp, not related to the discussion).
ok, let's assume that the open google connection is something to do with forum software, etc.  fine. I create a webpage on my own host, with absolutely nothing connecting to other sites.  netstat again shows the connection to my host, and closes after no activity. this is how it should be.  I close the tab and go back to a blank start page.  a few seconds later, as I check netstat (which is in continuous mode per the command above), i see a new connection open:
    tcp 0 0 192.168.1.100:48738 iy-in-f100.google.c:www ESTABLISHED user 19146 3204/firefox-bin off (0.00/0/0)
huh?? nothing is loading, no other network programs are open (again other than ntpd and mail are open, not using gmail).  sometimes i see this when i just open firefox with no webpage, after a few seconds of letting it sit there.  why, google, why??
so short of blocking google altogether, or disconnecting my network after loading each webpage I want (is there perhaps a firefox extension that does this? a "kill all connections" extension? ), can anyone explain what this is all about?
i've tried googling (!) but cant find anything about this (surprise surprise!).  Before you start calling me paranoid and overly worried about nothing, this is not about anything other than i want to have as much control as i can over what connections my computer opens to the world.  and i wouldnt have that much of an issue with it if there wasn't that strange connection opening when there are no webpages open and firefox is just sitting there doing nothing.
can anyone verify? or better yet, can anyone tell me how to stop this?  Thanks!
[edit] forgot to mention, I have searched for that host, and it is part of the google server farm, so it is an outgoing connection from firefox as noted in netstat, to google, for no reason that appears obvious to me.  and arch is pretty good, i was mainly using it as an example, as the google connection doesnt open from the arch servers (as far as i can tell it seems almost random unless i visit a webpage with obvious google tools/search boxes (or google itself obviously))

  • Why or why not single-host installation?

    Hi friends,
I'm collecting your opinions and experiences here... :)
Why or why not to install complete, i.e. both Infra and Mid-tier, AS release 2 on a single host? -does it not basically come down to hardware configuration? (if the cpu and RAM is "good" enough, then no problems)
And multi-host installations is mostly for expansion and segmentation reasons?
    Thanks,
    Fredrik

In my experience the reason NOT to do a single host installation is performance.
I tried doing a single-host installation on an NT box running dual Pentium 500mhz processors and 1GB of ram. Everything seemed to work just fine. The infrastructure went in one Oracle home, the app server went in another. All of the admin functions took forever. The EM website was a complete pain to use. The machine clearly was short on memory and short on CPU.
Keep in mind the infrastructure installation includes a complete application server, it's own instance of the Oracle database, plus a bunch of additional adminstration specific bits. It's a lot of stuff. The application server installation duplicates a lot. You end up running two instances of Apache, a bunch (5-10) instances of the J2EE container, etc.
The good news (for us anyway) is that the infrastructure installation can also be used to manager Oracle databases. It's instance of the Oracle database is the repository for the admin data. We were going to set up an dedicated box for Oracle Enterprise Manager anyway for our new 9i databases. So putting the infrastructure on it's own box ends up causing us no grief at all. Also we plan on running 4 instances of the app server (for various sites we have around the world). So again having the infrastructure on it's own box really makes sense for us.
To sum up, in my limited experience the single-host solution worked just fine (though it was not used in a production setting) but if you go that way you'll want a beefy box.

I haven't gone to the trouble of actually testing to see which uses more CPU power, but Firefox has been faster than Safari on every Mac I've ever owned.
To see CPU usage by process, open the terminal (in Utilities) and enter 'top' at the command line. You might have to expand the window as processes don't appear in any logical order.
It could also be hardware-related: I have late 2009 mini with similar specs and it pinwheels easily.
