Why poor AVCHD playback on iMac but fine on Macbook Pro?

Does anyone know why the 1080i 50 AVCHD footage I have taken from a Panasonic Camcorder plays back absolutely fine on my Macbook Pro but horribly on our work iMacs (which are younger than my MBP), where I get these lines of distortion that slowly scan up the picture?  I think it must be something to do with screen refresh rate but I'm not sure.
Hope someone can help me work it out and find a solution!
Thanks,
Sean

It turned out one of our imacs at work was faulty - playback is fine on the others.

  • Avi files work fine on iMac but not new MacBook Pro

I've had an iMac for three years and recently purchased a new MacBook Pro.  I have a ton of .avi files (movies) on an external drive and have had no problem playing them on my iMac; however, I'm not able to play them on my MacBook Pro.  I have installed Flip4Mac on my MacBook Pro but I'm still getting an error message saying "avi is not a format that can be played."
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for the help!!!

  • My Time Capsule disk shows on my iMac but not my MacBook Pro. How do I get the Airport Extreme mounted disk to show as an available Time Machine disk on my MacBook?

I just replaced an Airport Express with a new Airport Extreme. My iMac recognizes the external hard disk I have connected to the Airport Extreme, and my Time Machine is backing up to it. But I can't get my MacBook Pro to recognize the disk as available for Time Machine. Both are running Mavericks, and the MacBook is only a couple of months old.

  • External drive not working on iMac, but works on Macbook Pro

I have read a few different threads relating to this question, with no real luck of a permanent solution.
I have an external drive that works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. My new iMac will not show the drive though (both with the current software).
The drive itself shows a power light and appears to be running/powered by the USB port.
    I have tried several ports.
It does not show in Disk Utility.
The option in settings is set to show the drive in finder and on the desktop (I have checked this).
I have tried restarting the iMac.
I have also had this problem after the iMac has been turned off overnight, and turned on in the morning (and then plugging the drive in after powering on).
I resolved this issue once by turning off the iMac, removing the power cord for a few minutes, and powering it up again.
I don't think it should be something I have to do every time I would like to use the drive though - It would be very irritating if I had to do that every time.
    Any advice or options here?
The iMac has only been used since Christmas day, 2014 - and has had this problem since that day (in which i solved it by the turn off/unplug thing).
Sorry, I am aware this question has been asked a lot. I haven't come across anything that is giving me a long-term solution to this problem.
    Happy new year!

Some USB-powered drives are just crappy. They require too much current from the USB and cause the bus to fail or the bus can't provide enough power for it to fully spin up. You can often hear or feel them clicking periodically (like once a second) as they are trying to spin up.
If this is the case, a powered Hub, external power supply, or Y-cable will be necessary to consistently use the drive.

I have a iMac desktop and a macbook pro laptop I work mainly on the desktop but when i go away for work I take my laptop. Is there any way to make it automatically back up to mirror my desktop? Like when I update a file it updates on there too, if I install software it installs on there too etc?
When I first got the laptop I syned it to load with all the same software etc but it hasn't continued to sync
    Thanks

    I use
    Chronosync (http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html)
    and
    Dropbox (https://www.dropbox.com/)
Both work very well. The former I use for manual, one-way synchroniziation of (nearly) entire systems. The latter for automatic syncing of very active directories through local and shared online storage.

  • I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 backup and created a network with the iMac and now the Macbook Pro cannot get internet.

I installed my new iMac with my Macbook Pro 2008 back up.  I created a iMac network with Airport extreme, but now my Macbook Pro cannot get internet.  any ideas on why or what to do about it.

    Hello 1BillyMac,
It seems you have a network conflict that isn't allowing your MacBook Pro to connect to the internet. This may be caused by both computers sharing identical network settings. You may want to consider creating a new network location on your MacBook Pro to assign new network settings. The following article will instruct you on how to do that:
OS X Yosemite: Add a network location
A network location is a group of network settings
A network location is a group of network settings for your various network services (Ethernet or Wi-Fi for example).
If you often change network settings, you may find switching between locations quicker and easier than repeatedly modifying individual groups of settings.
For example, you might want to make a location for “home,” where you connect to the Internet with a telephone modem, and a location for “office,” where you connect to your company network and the Internet using Ethernet or AirPort.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Network.
Click the Location pop-up menu, choose Edit Locations, then click Add .
Enter a name for the location, then click Done.
Enter settings for each network connection service you want to use in that location.
After you create your locations, you can switch all of your network settings by clicking the Location pop-up menu and choosing a different location.

  • Why can't I connect to iCloud on my macbook pro?

Why can't I connect to iCloud on my macbook pro?

Not sure what you've tried so far to connect. But, make sure you have an Internet connection and log into iCloud with your Apple ID/password from System Preferences/iCloud.
If the OS X you're running is prior to 10.7, you won't be able to use iCloud as this feature was added to OS X beginning with OS X Lion (10.7).

  • I want to copy my iphoto library from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro.

I am having a lot of difficulty copying my existing iphoto library from our imac to our new macbook pro.  We have the two computers set up through Time Machine.  I tried using dropbox and though I was successful until I tried to click on the thumbnails of some of the pics and only got a black image and a "!". The pics that would open could not be edited.  When I look at permissions I show that every category are read and write ( I changed them all to try and resolve this).  When I pull up info on the macbook about the library it still shows the imac extension on the library.  Don't know if that is a problem or not.  Tried to copy the files again and it stopped mid process saying I did not have permission?!  Both computers are running Lion.  This permission thing is making me crazy.  What am I missing?  We don't need restricted permission on either computer.. it's our house not a business w/ employees!!

Why don't you copy the library to a flash drive and then copy to the other Mac?

  • How do i transfer data from my old imac to my new macbook pro?, how do i transfer data from my old imac to my new macbook pro?

HOW DO I TRANSFER DATA FROM MY IMAC TO MY NEW MACBOOK PRO? I tried it with an ethernet cable and it seems to go OK till it gets to applications. From there the time it takes to complete seems to increase rather than decrease!

That's the easiest way, this side of using Time Machine. The time it takes to transfer files between our computers ka vary but while doing it on my MBP I had to leave it plugged in for near 24 hours and it was supposed to take 3.

  • What is the fastest way to transfer files and applications from an older iMac to a new MacBook Pro?

What is the fastest way to transfer files and applications from an older iMac to a new MacBook Pro?
I have a Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adapter, but no icons showing either Mac appear on either desktop.

The fastest way is to use Carbon Copy Cloner and a external drive formatted GUID OS X Ext. J in Disk Utlilty, then connecting to the new Mac and using Migration Assistant in the Utilites folder.
Even faster, if you can determine your going to replace all the apps from fresh sources anyway (like if the older Mac's OS X verison is old thus the apps) then just use a external drive and copy just your files to it, then connect to the new Mac and transfer over.
Some apps you can just grab the registration code and install it fresh on the new machine with the old code, talk to the developer about transfering the program, as long as it's deleted on the older Mac in the process.
It used to be Firewire Target disk mode was fastest, but since Thunderbolt came out...
Notice this support doc hasn't been updated since june 2012, no Thunderbolt info

  • Video plays on PC but not my Macbook Pro-comes up as blank disc

Hello, I have a DVD with a video on it that plays fine on a PC but on my Macbook Pro it says that it's a blank DVD and will not play the video that is on the disc.  The video plays on Windows Media Player when I open it on a PC, so I installed the newsest version of Flip4Mac thinking this would work, but the disc still shows up as a blank disc and cannot be played.  Do I need a different software or is this something that cannot be fixed?  I work in the legal field, so I got the DVD from an attorney, and I frequently tend to have problems opening videos on my macbook pro that come from the legal field.
    Thanks!

What format is the video? Is it .wmv? Do the DVD's have any type of protection or encryption? This information will help in finding a solution.

  • WD MyBook Pro 320 Mounts w/FW 800 on G5 but not on MacBook Pro

Hi, I just got a WD MyBook Pro 320 GB HD for backup purposes. I've seen other people with problems mounting a WD MyBook, and in my case there is a slight difference. It will mount with via FW 400 and 800 on my G5, but with my MacBook Pro it will only mount via FW 400 (and not 800). Before I send this thing back does anyone have any ideas what is wrong, and/or anyone have any similar experiences? BTW, this problem occurred both before and after I repaired Disk Permissions and checked and repaired the disk on the MacBook Pro (it did need repair according to Disk Utility), upon the suggestion of WD tech support, who said that the problem might be the MacBook. Both computers OS 10.4.9.

No, during the several times that I tried it (and just now I tried again), I didn't have anything plugged into the 400 port of the MacBook; I only had the WD plugged into the 800 port. And I know that the 800 cable is fine, because several times I tried the WD with my G5, using the 800 port with the same cable, and it mounted no problem.
I suppose I could just use it with the 400 cable on my MacBook, but I'm afraid that this problem may be a sign of other problems down the road, especially given my reading about other people having trouble with WD. I think I'm just going to send it back. Thanks everyone for your help.
