Why Scripts Stops Responding, Especially In E-Mail

I get quite frequently pop-up "Script not Responding" messages especially when I open my e-mail. I have the option to continue the scrip or stop the script.
I, also have problems downloading add 0ns to fireox. I always get the error code -203
How can I resolve these problems?

  • How to deal with "Script stopped responding" in general Part 3

OK, I have asked about this issue before, and am back because it won't go away.
First, I have tried resetting Firefox. Yesterday was the most recent time.
I have tried using add-on Script Blockers.
The Script Blocker program worked for a while. The problem is that the primary source of the script problems are Hotmail and Gmail, and I need to have these functioning and open. Plus it is not easy to determine what a script does before deciding to let it in.
So I'm going to start from the computer user perspective: Why does this happen at all?
I understand the need for scripts to be used for websites to function. What I don't understand is why my entire computer slows to a crawl, some programs get cut off entirely, and then I have to try to figure out what webpage is causing the problem...slowly. Even when I click the box to stop the script, my computer is still incredibly slow for an unreasonable amount of time. By unreasonable amount, I mean that it is so long that I can't even close Firefox within 5 minutes just to make it stop. By unreasonable amount, I mean I have actually just set my computer to restart so that Firefox will be forced closed and then cancel the restart when Firefox shuts down.
What can Hotmail, Gmail, or any other program be doing that is of sufficient importance that it can essentially take over the computer? Nothing that isn't critical to the functioning of the computer should have this power. There is nothing critical about a script on Hotmail while I'm not even using that should let it take over all of the computer's resources. I would rather have Hotmail crash and shut off than have it let a script take over my computer. I can click on my Hotmail start up button within seconds while a script that won't respond might take 15 minutes to deal with.
So can someone please explain to me why this system exists? Why isn't there a command that says "a script may use up this amount of processing power only" that allows a person to keep using their computer while the script futily whirls away? Why isn't there a way to have an automatic setting like "let a script try to run for X seconds and if it doesn't work just stop it"? Why doesn't a window pop-up on the computer screen regardless of where the script problem is to alert you what webpage is causing the problem instead of making the user guess?
There doesn't even seem to be much purpose to the scripts. If I stop a script that is not responding on Hotmail, I can still use Hotmail when the computer recovers. So why does this happen?
This system seems insane to me. Honestly, I don't understand why scripts are allowed to do this. Can someone at least help with an explanation of why this happens? Why there isn't a way to make it stop? In a world of apps it seems like something that would kill non-responding scripts after a brief time would be a winner. How did we reach this chokepoint in computer functioning and why haven't we figured out how to stop it?
Thank you for any help, whether it be fixing the problem or just explaining the purpose.

Hi auzziewog, a couple of thoughts on long pauses.
In some cases, this is caused by Firefox waiting on content from the server, or loading some content into a plugin. Other than blocking some extraneous content in pages and setting plugins to "Ask to Activate" (click-to-play) on the Add-ons page, this is a hard problem to solve.
If the problem is a script (the eventual appearance of the dialog suggests that possibility), please see the above reference post.
Perhaps it is a combination of those things, since scripts often run after some other elements are loaded...

  • Why I stopped contributing (especially to expert forums)...

In reply to the recent topic that raised the suggestion of Platinum contributors, Rich write:
<i>In response to the above, I have to say, that the driving force behind most of the top contributors here on SDN is to help their peers. If a Top Contributor slows or stops in his contributions, it is either one of two things, 1) he simply doesn't get anything out of it anymore( the feeling you get when you help someone) or 2) he is not contributing due to lack of availibility, meaning that maybe his employer has cut him off from doing so during work hours, or the work load is simply too much and there is not time for contributing.</i>
I'm interested in the reasons why people have stopped or slowed, especially in the product expert forums.
I thought I'd share my experience, as I was one of the top portal forum area posters for a while.
Basically I got tired of the repetitious questions where there had been no attempt to do basic research. So, rather than using the search option, or following the well documented links to the wiki pages which a few of us spent quite a bit of time constructing, people would just post a question.
What's wrong with this?  The forum is here to help. Yes, but I like to find the more meaty, interesting questions! For example, after the 1000th question about logon tickets or "how do I get involved in this portal thing", all with well documented answers, it was becoming harder to find a "new" question or one which made me think "yeah, something to spend some time working on".
Of course, it did help that I was travelling away from home more and it was often more productive to spend some time answering questions when stuck in a hotel room, so I also can tick the "time availablity" answer to reduced SDN posting.
    Cheers

    Hi Michael and Gareth,
This is not exactly the thread that I was hoping to come back to from my 3 month family leave: Why top contributors stop contributing.
It is for sure an interesting question and something that keeps us Community Evangelists up at night.
I think we are the victims of our own success. Because we have such active contributors and timely replies people get lazy and don't search. And there is a reward for posting a new answer or a copy from an older answer in points.
How could we reward searching and reusing? It is sad that the challenging questions are drowned out in the noise of repeated ones.
Extra newbie forums don't solve the problem, if you are too lazy to search, you are also too lazy to find the right forum.
We do have mark for review in the Wiki. It would be great to have something similar in the forums too. Where members can mark a question as repeat. Experts can then set their filter to no repeat questions and it would shame the poster.
Another possibility would be to put in an extra step when opening a thread. Once the question is posted, a search is started in the background and possible threads are shown, which can be checked out without loosing the question, that way the system searches for you.
    > We seem to be heading toward being an interview
    > question/answer line: <b>which stinks</b>.  If
    > someone gets the job based on this form of cheating -
    > and it is cheating when people are given interview
    > questions responses - they are supposed to be
    > checking your experience - then the client who is
    > unlucky enough to have hired gets someone with no
    > experience or skills of their own.
These interview questions only help you if you research them before, which means that someone is doing his or her homework, which isn't a bad thing. The answers help to get deeper into the topics too. We all started once and having these answers helps also to ease the fear of the interview for people that are less experiance. There are only so many interview questions that can be asked and prepped for, so it goes back to people not searching It is the task of the hiring manager to find out the real depth of candidate's knowledge.
Any suggestion to bring our members to search more are greatly appreciated, Mark.

  • Why does javascript always stop responding for many websites?

I earlier FF versions I didnt have that.
Only in the latest ones, currently in 3.5.12
Javascript regularly stops responding especially on googole.com and wikipedia.
I would like to attach an image but in the initial post people cant attach images.
I will post an example image in my answer to my post.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Macbook 2GHz 2GB upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 - Now slow, heats up quickly and regularly stops responding

I have a 2008 Macbook 2GHz 2GB that initially ran on Snow Leopard, and I upgraded it to Lion about 6 months ago. Since the upgrade, it has become slow to start up, open programmes and regularly stops responding - especially when I'm on the Internet - leaving me with the processing colourwheel, and forcing me to turn it off by the button.
I have tried repairing permissions and it doesn't seem to make a difference, could it just be that I don't have enough RAM (only 2GB) to run Lion? I don't want to revert back to Snow Leopard because I sync my laptop with my phone using iCloud, and Snow Leopard would complicate that.
I have also noticed that it heats up especially quickly and gets very hot, although I'm not sure if this problem is related or something to do with the version of Adobe or Microsoft Silverlight that I run on my Macbook.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks a lot!

Honestly I would never run both Win 7 & XP at the same time in a VM. 7 needs at least 4GB to run properly and uses more resources then XP.
I personally use VMware Fusion and XP. At this time there is no software, that I'm aware of or use, that does not run on XP. So for my Mac Win VM purpose I only run XP with the software in need to use in Windows. This work very well for me. I have 2 CPUs and 3GBs of RAM assigned to XP. Leaving the other 2 CPU cores, 4 HT cores, and 5GBs of RAM for OS X.
Not sure why you need, or want, to run both versions of Windows at the same time. I don't see the need as stated above.

  • Preview window causes AE:CC to stop responding

So, I just built a new computer so I could get more horse power out of AE, but when I scrub through the timeline(with fast preview enabled and 1/4 rendering) AE will freeze and stop responding for 10 to 15 seconds. It happens constantly. Sometimes the AE program will start flashing in and out of not responding rapidly before resolving itself and then the play head randomly displaying some other area on the time line.

Anyone have any idea why is stops responding?

    Version: 12.2.0.52
It has been happening sense I started.
I have not tried CS6. I am download it now to check it out.
I wish I could test it with windows 8, however I bought windows 8.1 OEM disc for my OS. So I don't think there is any way to go back. (should have just gotten 7...).
It is very possible this is an all windows 8/8.1 problem. This fourm is a similar issue that arises with the preview:

  • Why do I constantly get this message: Unresponsive Script, A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

  • Open email & top of bar says fire fox not responding & get script error on page asking to stop script or continue. Loading most mail or sites is slow now that I returned from Japan and using same laptop. Any ideas?

my laptop stops responding when I open email right in the middle of writing email or checking email and when I open bookmarks. Up the top it says firefox not responding and a script error block opens asking me to continue or stop script. It give me this same error all the time no matter if I select continue or stop script.

As far as email sites go. The "Adblock Plus" extension with at least the "EasyList US" filter subscription would probably help. I does block a lot of unnecessary Script files whose sole purpose is to provide advertising. You can of course add additional filter subscriptions or filters of your own.
There are many extensions that can cause such problems, and you may have to go through your extensions.
One thing you might do is eliminate Problematic Extensions that you are not using, but mainly check to see how the create problems and you may have to make a choice between extensions. The Unresponsive Script Warning page lists some extensions with problems (thought it listed more) and describes how to check through your extensions to help find which extension is the problem Sometimes the message will tell you.

  • Why does Shockwave Flash "stop responding" only around 1-3 pm? Works fine mornings and evenings.

For the past couple of weeks I've been having this issue. Everything works fine all morning, and then mid-afternoon, Mozilla goes haywire and I get an "unresponsive plugin" error message, telling me Shockwave Flash "has stopped responding". It derails my entire computer system, everything ends up "not responding" (every single window, tab, program, even pictures and Word documents) then after I spend half an hour moving at the speed of molasses to save, close, and restart things, then it continues working just fine for the rest of the evening. It ONLY happens around 1 to 3 pm.
It's aggravating to say the least. And I can't figure out why. Everything I have from Adobe is up to date, all of my plugins in general are up to date, and I've been using the same exact websites for work for years but this has only cropped up recently.
Any ideas? Should I just take a long lunch and avoid my computer from 1 to 3?
PS: I'm the only person home, and my wifi requires a password, so it's my internet service fighting a crowd or anything.

I'm not paying for Norton for the toolbar, I like the Internet Security options in general.
It has this "Vault" that stores all your website passwords, and "Identity Cards" to store financial information, addresses, etc. I feel safer having this information stored in Norton (which I gave the most unique and secure password I could think of) rather than storing these details on individual websites.
Heaven forbid anyone ever steal my computer, they won't be able to access ANYTHING unless they can hack into Norton, which is the only password I hand-type. Before I got it, I used to have Firefox save it for me, but there was no security in that. Anybody could open up, say, Amazon.com, and log right into my account, and instantly have access to my credit card and change the mailing address. Using Norton Internet Security, they can't get into any of my accounts (shopping, banking, email, etc), and even if they do, they won't find any sensitive info available.
As for Firefox 22, I just clicked "update" the other day (before then canceling) because it specifically said the plugin wasn't available, and I need it for the options I just mentioned. The next time it prompts me, I'll look again and see if it's ready yet.

  • Mail Stops Responding While Sending Messages

Mail has been freezing on me a lot lately when I am sending a message. I tried to find a pattern, and it seems the problem is multi-tasking. Since I have Activity Viewer open all the time, I can see what Mail is doing. If I send an e-mail and try to do something else in Mail before the message is sent (as shown in Activity Viewer), then Mail stops responding. This something else could be opening the original message, opening a different message, deleting a message, filing a message, viewing a different folder, etc.
Does anyone know why this happens and if there is anything I can do?

I am seeing the same issue just as you described. Have you managed to find a solution? It just seems to be a recent problem.

  • Why does my iPad mini stop responding to wifi after a period of time?

Why does my iPad mini stop responding to wifi after a period of time?
For example, I can connect to wifi and use Safari and my iPad's interet capabilities with no problem. But if I then leave my iPad alone for an hour - when I go back to using it, it still shows as being connected to the wifi, but is unresponsive - i.e. web pages will not load etc. - I have to disconnect and reconnect to the wifi to make it responsive.
    In advance, thanks

    Try #5
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Script is busy or stopped responding error message

When I am watching a video that requires adobe flash player, for example YouTube, and I unplug my extended monitor my Firefox freezes completely and a minutes later displays an error.
I get the error message :
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
    Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/browser.xml236"
    [ Continue ] [ Stop script ]
Firefox freezes when I click 'Continue' then unfreezes a few minutes later and the message comes back. When I click 'Stop script' my adobe flash crashes on all pages I have and needs refreshed.
How can I fix this or is this a known bug?
I also noticed that I now have an Adobe Flash Player audio mixer volume(speaker) when I have FireFox open. I didn't have this before.
I'm curious to why the script is in the directory of Chrome as well..
    Thanks.

Firefox uses the chrome protocol to access internal file and files added by extensions, so this has nothing to do with Google Chrome.
It is usually not a good idea to detach a display that is currently in use by Firefox or a plugin.
You probably previously saw a Firefox item in the volume mixer. Current Firefox versions use the plugin-container process, so when a plugin is active you now probably see this process.
You can do a check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

On some pages, Firefox goes slow/ stops/ waits, and a box with the message:
A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Is shown.
It does not happen on all pages.

I did, and realised that was the probelem as soon as I posted the question. It fixed it, many thanks for your response. Why do the add on tool bars cause so many problems, and I do not even remember letting it appear!

  • Firefox stops responding when I try to play words with friends, eventually a box pops up about script

First, let me say I have the latest version of Firefox and Adobe Flash Player and Java Script. When I click to play Words With Friends (on pc) my computer starts racing and sounds loud and every thing freezes. If I try to click on slider or anything else, it says Mozilla Firefox (not responding), then it takes several minutes and a box pops up that says something about a script, do I want to continue or ?(I can't remember), after I click continue, I can play the game, but, at any given time Firefox will stop responding again!! A box also pops up from AVG saying that Firefox is using too much memory. Just an aside, I can play Scrabble on Facebook without any problems whatsoever. Please help, it is driving me crazy. Thanks

Sounds that you are missing the plugin that is used to play those videos embedded in Firefox.<br />
Your system details list doesn't show any media player plugin, so you will either have to check if the plugin(s) are installed, but disabled or install missing plugins.
You may need the new WMP plugin (np-mswmp.dll) because Flash always uses a dedicated player to play the videos and would never offer to save videos directly unless an extension is used.

  • A message keeps coming up about a script being busy or stopped responding and I want to know how to stop this from happening everytime I want to get on the internet.

A message came up on my desktop asking me to click on it and it warned me about my toolbars would no longer work. I believe I had just deleted Google Chrome. Now every time I want to go online I have to wait a minute or so before a message comes up and states: A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can continue to see if the script will complete". Then under the above message is this:
    Script:chrome://tavgp/content/libs/include.js:595.
There are two boxes underneath that state "Continue" or "Stop script". I click on the "stop script" box and then I can get online. I don't know what this means or how to get rid of it and how do I get Firefox toolbar to work again? Did I do anything to my computer that is causing this error? I never had this problem until I clicked on the first message and I am sorry I didn't write the info down but I didn't know all this was going to happen.

That is a problem with an AVG extension (toolbar).
