Why send it in for the whine?

i got a 2.16 and have a whine noise also, but why send it in now when apple doesnt even know the source, im sure people are saying its the logic board or whatever but thats not tottally confirmed. nobody knows for sure if its a hardware problem or software problem, and if it was a hardware problem you still have a year to get it fixed or 3 years with apple care. so i dont think i'll be sending mine baack, the whine is not all that bad on mine. i think if your sending yours back now, you won't be gettin it back for a long time. who has got theres back?

I called about the CPU whine on Friday and after a while was told to send it in for repair. However after reading more info later in the day, and checking a bunch of MBPs at dealers this weekend I don't intend to send it in. The display whine is something that is known and can be fixed. But the CPU whine seems like it's common to all the ones I've seen. I don't think sending it in will make any difference at all. I'll wait and use the mirror widget trick for now and hope Apple can fix it with a software update or wait until there's a known hardware fix for it. Right now it seems like the bulletin that went out to dealers says the CPU is expected, normal, and that replacing hardware won't change it.

    quite surprised it suggests that iPhone 3gs s more powerful than the iPad1? iphone 3gs is supported. something is fishy. i don't want to fall out of love with apple products. looks like it's a business decision to cut support for iPad 1 - not technical shortcoming. if apple cut support for 3gs they will upset customers who just bought 3gs before iphone 5 was launched.... tsk tsk tsk.. i'm not from US. hope to see a class action suit by US peeps to resolve this...

    you need to be more specific. What is your setup?
    Obviously, what you need is a command parser. Look this article for the basics. I know it is meant for RT but the concept is there.

    And Apple won't tell you. All they will tell you is what countries are supported for LTE right now. You can express your interest to Apple via their feedback pages, if you wish:

    but you will not receive a reply. It may be waiting on Telcel to approve. They may not feel that their LTE network is robust enough to handle that much load yet. But I'm just guessing. We'll just have to wait and see what develops.

  • Permanent SOLUTION for the WHINE issue. STEP by STEP Instructions.

    Hi all,
    Your dreams have come true. There is a cure for the whine that requires no programs to run and persists between reboots.
    It requires the editing of one file. Please attempt this only if you understand what you are doing. I take no responsibility for your actions.
    Here are the steps:
    1. Find the file: -> System -> Library -> Extensions -> IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext
    2. Click the file and choose DUPLICATE from the File menu. Drag the copied file to somewhere safe.
    3. Control click the original file to get: SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS
    4. Double click CONTENTS
    5. Double click PLUGINS
    Delete everything except:
    ACPISMCPlatformPlugin.kext
    Simple_PlatformPlugin.kext
    6. Control click ACPISMCPlatformPlugin.kext and again SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS
    7. Double click CONTENTS
    8. Open the file: Info.plist with a text editor. I use Subethaedit.
    9. Look for the following:
    <dict>
    <key>DTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>10</integer>
    <key>DTC_WAT</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>15</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAT</key>

    Make sure the MacBookPro1,1 is there at the end of the block. The block above represents the CPU throttling values. You'll notice that the integer values in the last block are 10 / 0 / 15 / 15
    There are other similar blocks related to other machine types. The first block is for "M9ADP1,1". The MacBook Pro Block is the second big block.
    The important line numbers are 129 and 131. So look there.
    Change those to:

    <integer>10</integer>
    <key>DTC_WAT</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>GTC_WAB</key>
    <integer>0</integer>

    10. Double check things and then save the file.
    11. Reboot to a no whine machine.
    12. Enjoy.
    With this method the only change is to the throttling matrix retaining all the code of the kernel extension relating to the MBP otherwise.

    1. The other files pertain to other Mac types and not the MBP; I don't think they'd harm anything by being there but it's what I have and I just wanted to report my setup exactly and remove all other variables.
    2. If you look at the matrix, the first number appears to relate to overall processor load; so it gives parameters for various thresholds.
    All the values above are identical X / 0 / 0 / 15; where X represents the processor load threshold.
    When this matrix is assigned to the final ie. 10 level ie: 10 / 0 / 0 / 15 there is a very slight hiss still audible. Changing to the given values 10 / 0 / 0 / 5 eliminated all whine on my machine.
    I agree it would be best to know what the values mean but I've just used my best deduction to work out this strategy.

    After sending my MacBook Pro of to repair and getting it back without the whine being gone I have come to the conclusion that they need to include ear plugs with every MacBook Pro they sell. This is the first Apple product I have had any issues with (5th apple in 2 years) in addition this is my first dealings with Apple Care and let me say it was the WORST experience I have ever had. I guess I hold Apple to a higher standard then Apple itself does.

    What noise do you have ? The screen induced noise or the CPU noise ?
    I only have the display related noise (inverter). I demanded that it be replaced as I found ou it is NOT part of the logic board. I said I would pay for the cost of the replacement and did not want to get the "Unable to reproduce compalint" response.
    The Apple Specialist said that would not necessary, he would request the replacement.
    He did indicate that the engineers said it "normal" I said no way.
    I have a box on the way.
    When and if they repair it I will note the part number on the Service Details report to all.
    Crossing Fingers! No fix and it is E-Bay time.

    This camera is well over a year old.  Why is there no support for the RAW file?

    It is definitely not only Fuji. I used a Panasonic Lumix FX-150 before that has been supported by Adobe Camera Raw for quite some time now. I replaced that camera by a Lumix LX5, but I see that the FX-150 is still not supported by Apple Camera Raw and probably never will.
    If you want wide range RAW support, use Lightroom. (Not to say that Aperture doesn't have its strengths, e.g. support for geocoding.)

    For the past week I have not been able to send both simple and attached messages through my icloud e-mail.

    Thanks @pdroth. I did a quick Google search of DB indexing. I'm not sure I found exactly what you were referring to but I see where you're going with it. I can understand that indexing my database of stored photos can be time consuming. It's frustrating that the space can't be recognized as being free more quickly.
    I notice that some items I delete seem to free up the space much more quickly. Removing an app entirely or deleting from my Music generally shows up as available space in Usage pretty quickly.
    Deleting a photo or video from the Camera Roll will take MUCH longer, so I guess that has something to do with the indexing process you are referring to.
    I'd like to point out that when I run out of space on an SD card on any budget point and click digital camera that I can quickly delete a picture or two and INSTANTLY be able to take a couple of new photos in their place. I guess I just have that same expectation for the $500+ engineering marvel I have in my hand right now.

  • Better workaround for the whine problem

    I have discovered a workaround for the commonly reported electronic whine in the MacBook Pro.
    As most will know, if you open PhotoBooth and run it in the background it will get rid of the whine. I also noticed that the same worked in ANY application that uses the iSight.
    So, looking around the Apple website for widgets I stumbled across this . . . .

    It solves the problem!!!!! Runs in the background, in the Dashboard, takes up no resources also!!

    Didn't read that whole thread on the issue did you?
    It also kills your battery life.
    The issue I don't believe is related to the CPU directly but is related to the overall power drain on the system..it seems anything that causes the system to use more power 'solves' the problem.

    I think it is pretty ridiculous that the only update apple has released that effects the whine issue, only makes it worse. Even worse is that users over here have managed to detect and resolve the issue before apple has managed to do so. So come on apple, what's taking so long? It's amazing how badly this situation is being handled.

    They know about the whine issue, i just talked to a product specialist who told me that they knew about it.
    He also told me that Apple was not planning on adressing it since the cpu whine was within specifications.
    As i said, it was a product specialist not an engineer so there is still a little hope regarding this issue being fixed sometime in the future.
    I am not the only one to be disappointed about this and other problems that MBPs have.
    But for now i m going to try and enjoy what i have , at the end of the year i will buy a sony loaded with vista since Apple is not able to give me satisfaction.
    I m a loyal Apple customer since many years, but i have had enough, no more repairs or exchanges for me; I wil just be switching back!
    The only thing that could make me change my mind is if Apple recalled my defective computer in order to give me a machine free of problem.
    So far it's impossible since they don't have such a machine in stock.
