Why should Apple's servers have caused all this chaos?

"Apple briefly experienced server difficulties resulting in some Apple TV units rebooting continuously. This issue has been resolved and is unrelated to the Apple TV 2.2 software release."
Says the announcement above - ok, great to get the info fairly quickly from Apple.
However, I'm a bit baffled about how an Apple Server problem - and frankly we've seen lots of glitches due to this in the past with authorisation on AppleTV, failure to access the Store - could result in this continuous rebooting.
This to me suggests that 2.2 is 'phoning home' in some way that earlier versions didn't - why is it doing that?
Even if it used to do it, it presumably handled the non-responsive server in a graceful manner rather than constant rebooting.
It implies any time there's an Apple Server issue we'll see these reboots again. 2.2 therefore needs an urgent patch to prevent this happening.
The 2.2 update was very welcome for me as I've wanted music video shuffling ever since the first units came out, but to see threads of 14 pages or more within hours of an update is unprecedented for AppleTV and will dent the confidence of users who've gone through factory restores and lost synced material a lot of which might be purchases that has not backed up to iTunes.
Credit to Mark W for posting the announcement so soon, but it does point to unacceptable behaviour in the software just because a server is down to constantly reboot.

I think you are correct that in this case not too many of the problems were caused by unplugging, however Capaho's point is still valid in terms of updates generally. You are wrong that this is an issue caused by a bug or a flawed software design and indeed the whole point of the  announcement is to point this out.
There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the update process needing to access the  servers as part of the update process and there are likely mechanisms in place should that access not be available. It's my impression here that it wasn't simply a case of the servers being unavailable and that the more likely problem was that communication was corrupt in some way rather than it simply not taking place at all.

    I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are trying to log into with your Apple ID, or what exactly you are seeing (alert message, directions, etc) when you try to do so.     If you had a pin code lock on the phone then your information is safe. If not then nothing in it is safe and I would suggest changing passwords to all accounts you had on the iphone ASAP. Also if you had find my iphone activated on the phone then you could go to icloud and wipe the phone remotely. If you didn't then there is nothing you can do about it.

    Dear Sir/Madam Since  the wifi is not coming ON how can I open this diagnostic on the iphone  4S am using and having problem with wifi behaving in erratic manner. 
    Am  a professional engineer for projects and am 68 yrs old. At one time was  looking after a production line manufacturing I C's in semiconductors  manufacturing company of the US.
    Have four apple products, one hp laptop and one DELL professional computer at home is used by only two members me and my wife.
    Wife  prefers working on ipad2 or ipad mini while traveling and has iphone 4.  Am using iphone4S with laptop and Dell computer, No apple product is  more than two years old.
    Am having the problem in using wifi on the 4S after it  was upgraded to the latest ios as per the recommendation by your  software of my iphone 4S 
    The wifi card hangs up at  it's own will and even a visit to your authorized service center in  Delhi has not able to help me although they have reverted the ios back  to the
    one supplied with the set. Am a user and not a computer expert but it looks like the wifi card is  not able to some times take the load while working which could indicate  the wifi card is getting heated up.   
    My daughter  who is Masters in 3D Animation is an ardent fan of apple products  working at present in Canada was also gifted by me a 4S about 4 months  back. My daughter-in-law is using iphone4 and an ipad for her professional  works along with a Dell PC in the US. While my son is a fan of samsung  products and does not like an apple product. 
    So in a family we have 7 apple products except MAC laptop/PC. 
    But the fact is, this problem with 4S has  really shaken me up and now it seems your products are deteriorating in  quality while demanding the best pricing structures. 
    Since  this is purely the device and the software of apple problem you may  please replace this set with new one as neither have any time to push  you/ request you after your service centre
    in Delhi told me yesterday this cannot be repaired.   
    The  serial No of my set is DN*****TC0 and was bought from an authorized  dealer and so were the other products from the same dealer in Delhi.  This set is still in showroom condition and
    was never used without a protective cover.

  • HT202213 I have done all this but i am not seeing my Itune library on my Apple TV

    I have itunes in Germany and can see various Movie and TV channels on the Itunes that i am using on my PC.
    I purchased some documentary from that itunes and they also show in the Itunes in the PC.
    I also put homesharing and it shows correctly on the vertical bar on the left side of itunes.
    However, I cannot access my itune library from my Apple-tv, despite of many many attempts. Oddly enough, the music shows in the music folder but not the pictures nor the movies that i bought in itunes.
    I also cannot see the TV channels that i have on the german Itunes in the apple Tv. There is no icon for tv channels , even though they are in itunes under the same id and password.
    I have looked everywhere but there is no guidance on this issue whatsoever.
    Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

    If Firewall is on in Mac OS X (in the Sharing pane of System Preferences), make sure iTunes Music Sharing is selected. This worked for me. Although I have not seen this answer posted in the support community forums, so far, it is listed as No. 2.2 under TIPS in the troubleshooting guide http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1453.

    Can anyone tell me why....We all plaids the same prices for the iPads just different models...

    I think it's down to the resources on the iPads. The new iPad is the only one that can push Siri with enough umph to make it work. I would have said the iPad 2 should be able to run it as we'll but obviously Apple don't think so.
    I've got the new one so have been giving it a go and it's definatly got potential. My mother in law is blind so I'm hoping we can get her one soon.

    If you "deauthorized all" last October then you cannot do it again for another 12 months.
    Since you just purchased a MBP you may be eligible for free support from AppleCare. If anyone can authorize another "deathorize all" it would be AppleCare so call them.

    I'm coming late to this string because I now have the same issue as gillnfly and you have all solved virtually all of my questions - thanks!  My only other question to add to what you've already said is - I currently have 1 G of memory installed.  Can I ADD a 2G card to get to 3G (probably more than I need), or should cards match if you have more than 1 - i.e., 2 1G cards or replace existing 1G with a 2G, or even 2 2G cards (way more than I need).
