Why Should I Buy Another Mac Book Pro

I purchased a Mac Titanium Powerbook back in the day when it was so fresh and new, big bucks.  Within 2 years the logic board began freezing all the time.  It was fixed with big bucks again.  2 years later the laptop began doing the same thing, freezing up and so I went along with the extremely annoying issue.
When the Mac Book Pro came out I decided to start fresh with a new computer, with big bucks of course.  Guess what happened 2 years later as i lived in another town, took it to another Mac repair place.  They told me the Logic board was dead.  So after big bucks I replaced it, so rediculous.  And now, 2 years later it is freezing again, not only that, I can't connect to my wifi anywhere I want to in my own place with my own internet.  I have to walk to certain spots in my place so my Mac Book Pro will communicate with my router that always worked with the new Mac Book Pro since day 1.  But, after these updates Apple puts out to better the system, at some time it borked my internet connection.  Reading these boards and seeing similar problems with other Apple users and seeing there is no solution is decerning.  Then seeing a new security update from Apple about detecting virus popups and nothing addressing it's wifi issue is the last straw for me.
My wife bought a Toshiba 4 years ago and we put win7 on it when it came out since vista is disgusting.  There isn't one problem with her laptop, nothing.  And you can run still get on the internet with a laptop that runs win98.  I cant even load a page when I get on my Mac Titanium Powerbook, that has to be connected to the internet via ethernet cable becuase detecting wifi on that is something that never occured, even though it should.
I am on the fence, Mac vs PC?  Pricey vs Something that breaks less?
So why should I buy another Mac computer?

I don't think the experiences of a place where people discuss problems is necesarily an indicator of the overall populace using the product. Just as if you went to a hospital, you could not ascertain the relative overall health of everyone who is not in the hospital.
Statistically, you are probably an ideal candidate for a MBP, as it is extremely unlikely that you would have another problem of similar character. That is of course assuming that nothing you are doing is cutting short the life expectancy of your computers.
I am on my 4th MB variant, and have only had one major issue, which was handled terrifically by Apple. However, I am not entirely without worry that an electromechanical device nmade by humans can't fail. That is why I also have had AppleCare on everything.
But we differ in one great respect, I think. I figure that any computer i buy has a maximum life expectancy of 3 years. I have never used a computer longer than that, and I am routinely trading up within that time period. This time will be different though. I've only had my MBA for a little over 6 months, and It can't come any sooner that I'll move to the new one in about a month, if it nears my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the value you place on longevity. But I really think that unless your activities are especially harsh in a physical manner on your computers, then it is unlikely you will have the same experience once more. I do beleive that the current units are as good or better than anything Apple has had in their notbooks, in terms of quality.
But it is your decision,, that should be based on ALL facts and not just the experiences of those who visit a help forum.

  • Should i get a mac book pro?

I have been considering buying a mac book pro for christmas, but i have some questions i need answered before doing so. There isnt an apple store anywhere near me, nor do i know anyone who has a mac book, so any help will be greatly appreciated.
currently use my PC for watching videos and movies, adobe photoshop and premiere pro, macromedia flash, web browsing, microsoft word, and gaming. Im going to school and majoring in graphic design, and i own a skateboarding company and constantly use my wacom tablet and create logos and artwork and edit skate footage.
This will be my first time owning a mac, so here are some questions
1.How well does boot camp work? Having a dual boot would be excelent to help ease me in to using a mac, and all of my games are made for the PC.
2.With boot camp, if i do the 32GB windows partition, can i access all my mac files from windows and visa versa?
3.Should i get the matte or glossy screen?
4.I always have my computer hooked up to a TV via a s-video cable on my ATI video card. Is there a way to do this on the MBP? Im hoping i can because it comes with an ATI card...
    Thanks in advance!
    -Chris

Hi Chris, I am also new to Macs and find them interesting but glad that I still have my Dell desktop. Macs definately take some getting use to but are fun. These forums are fantastic too...
    3. let me rephrase my question. All apple says about the glossy is that colors look better and more vivid. What is the downside of the glossy?
You may want to start following the topics in the MBP Display forums. There is one topic that has about 15 pages about how the display is kinda hazy and has a limited viewing area.
One of the downsides reported on the glossy is that it is a dirt/dust/fingerprint magnet. The glossy also has reports of being very reflective of any and all backlighting. From reading up on the display forums I changed my order from glossy to matte. I dont have a store near me either...
    4. where can i get these DVI out convertor cables? Does anyone know if you can do a full screen video option on the mac like you can with the ATI catalyst control center on a PC? (basically, if there is any video playing on my PC, no matter what size the window is, it will project a full screen version to the TV. That way i can still browse the web while watching something on the TV)
The DVI to SVHS cables are available from the apple store for about $18. I use mine for viewing vids a lot too. I am not able to do as you hope by watching full screen tv and browse the web in another window. I may be wrong and will be watching to see if there is a way to do this.
good luck in making your decision.

p.s. It is also a very good idea to pay the extra $350 to get three extra years of AppleCare warranty.

  • Buying a Mac Book Pro

    Good night,
First of all, I am sorry if this post should not be here (this is the first time that I used the forums)
This summer, I am traveling to New York, and I would like to buy a Mac Book Pro, and I want western spanish keyboard. I can not stay there for a long time, and I would like to know if in the Fifth Avenue store there is usually stock of Mac Book's Pro with this keyboard. If there is not stock, I would like to know if I could order it by apple online store and ask them to send it to my hotel.
I would also like to know if I can get the free iPod touch, because I am starting my high education, but I am from Spain.
Sorry for my English and thank you so much for your answers

I do not think you can do this. I really doubt they stock the MBP with a Western Spanish keyboard - Apple Stores generally stock only standard configurations. For example, the Boston Apple Store (which is actually the largest Apple Store in North America), does not stock MBPs with the Western Spanish keyboard, or even with the faster processor.
You cannot order online from the US Apple Online Store unless you have a credit card with a US billing address.

Woggledog, the OP wants to buy one from in-store stock in NYC, not to order one online.

  • I want to buy a mac book pro to edit video on what computer and software do I get?

I want to buy a mac book pro to edit video on.  What kind of specifications do I need to make sure Final Cut runs smootlhy. And do I need Final Cut studio or Final Cut X? The software is for beginners?
    Thanks

Ok great - Im by no means a professional editor I have done a fair bit of video editing for online, presentation and awards videos in my previous jobs, and was advised by a previous trainer to get a mac and final cut pro as working of PCs and with Sony Vegas was time consuming and inefficient. I am buying a whole new set of equipment for my office and hope to get the department all trained up on it in the next year.
I will be learning to use the software but I will need it to make professional videos in the end so I don't think imovie would be appropriate? Thanks for the advice though - I will be prepared for the learning curve.
Any other advice on which Mac to get also much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Hi, i want to buy a mac book pro. I was wondering if the ms office suit that i will buy can be a normal version or a one that has to be compatible with mac?

Hi, i want to buy a mac book pro. I was wondering if the ms office suit that i will buy can be a normal version or a one that has to be compatible with mac?

It must be compatible with Mac OS X. You have to install the Mac OS X Microsoft Office version > http://www.microsoft.com/mac
Also, you can use the PC version, but in this case, you will have to install Windows on a virtual machine or Boot Camp, so it's better to use the OS X version. There are alternatives for Office, like Apple iWork or LibreOffice, if you want to try them before

Apple will gladly sell you a color coordinated and texture matching external SuperDrive to go with your Retina'ized MBP for about $80 bucks.
Note that those models are completely sealed with no serviceable or upgradeable parts inside. So if you decide to bite the bullet, be sure to customize its guts to your heart's content from the get-go as no further change will be possible. This means CPU speed, amount of RAM and size of the solid state drive. Other external options, like the Superdrive, can be added later.

  • Buy a Mac Book Pro 15 with keyboard in italian: is it possible?

Hi to everybody, I wanted to buy a Mac Book Pro 15 here in the US but I need a keyboard in italian: is it possible to obtain? thank you

    Carlo,
As dahammer1 says, I think that if you'll want to buy new through a web purchase it's not possible, unless you buy on the Italian Apple Store website, which highly likely means you have to have it shipped to an Italian address and have someone ship it to the US at extra costs and a possibility of custom charges.
I've been in a similar situation. Note that I'm not living in the US but in France and had to buy an MBP with a Dutch keyboard.
What I did was going to my closest Apple Authorized Reseller here in France and have them make a very custom order and send it to Apple. Delivery time was obviously much longer than when ordering via the web.
I'm not sure though this is common policy at all Authorized Resellers or Apple Stores, but you might give it a try.

  • I am Canadian.  If I buy a Mac Book Pro in the USA is my warranty valid in Canada?

I Am Canadian visiting the United States.  If I purchase a Mac Book Pro in the US will the warranty be valid when I get back to Canada?

    Sorry, this should be a response to Fishmanbp;
From a fellow Canadian. Yes the warranty is valid in Canada, indeed anywhere in the world.
At Canada Customs you will have to pay HST on the purchase, unless you can persuade Customs that the cost was less than the permitted exemption. If you do pay HST, the cost will be the same as buying it here, within the daily fluctuations of the exchange rate.
