Why should I partition my HD?

Just bought my first mac... huge step up from windows 98. The PC users I know seem to be all for partitions, but I've read that many mac users don't bother b/c it doesn't seem to speed up processing. I'll be using it mostly for internet research and word processing, with a fair bit of digital photo storage, and I'll proabably tinker with imovie and garage band.
What would the benefits be beyond greater organization. Would it restrict access if I were to catch a virus off the internet?
Thought I'd try to figure out if its worth doing before I start saving a bunch of documents and photos.
Also, is ilife included on the OS X install disc that came with my computer or will I lose that if I partition my HD? (Searched the disc but couldn't find anything)
I appreciate any advice you have.

wawalulu
You can partition your disk with Disk Utility. It's in your Utilities Folder.
But, if you read the thread above, why on earth would you?
have a 50-50 partition with my Toshiba. I mainly use the partition to save my important files so that I don't have to remove them every time when I reinstall my OS (I have to do it almost every 3-4 months ... because it's Microsoft...).
Well that reason is gone. I've re-installed my System software 3 times in nearly 20 years of use - and two of them weren't necessary. Also if you back up - and you should - that also removes the necessity. And if you do have to re-install an Archive and Install makes all that wiping of the HD unnecessary.
And no, copying to another partition on a disk in NOT a back up.
I will get a external hard drive to work with my iMac. Will I still need to partition my iMac's HD if I have an external HD?
You don't need to partition. You do need to back up.

  • When creating a tablespace why should we enable LOGGING when a database is already on ARCHIVE LOG mode

    Question :
When creating a tablespace why should we enable LOGGING when a database is already on ARCHIVE LOG mode ?
    Example:
    Create Tablespace
    CREATE SMALLFILE TABLESPACE "TEST_DATA"
    LOGGING
    DATAFILE '+DG_TEST_DATA_01(DATAFILE)' SIZE 10G
AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT  500K MAXSIZE 31000M
    EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
    SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO;
LOGGING: Generate redo logs for creation of tables, indexes and  partitions, and for subsequent inserts. Recoverable
Are they not logged and not recoverable if we do not enable LOGGING? What is that ARCHIVELOG mode does?

What is that ARCHIVELOG Mode Does?
Whenever your database is in archive log mode , Oracle will backup the redo log files in the form of Archives so that we can recover the database to the consistent state in case of any failure.
Archive logging is essential for production databases where the loss of a transaction might be fatal.
    Why Logging?
Logging is safest method to ensure that all the changes made at the tablespace will be captured and available for recovery in the redo logs.
It is just the level at which we defines:
    Force Logging at DB level
    Logging at Tablespace Level
    Logging at schema Level
Before the existence of FORCE LOGGING, Oracle provided logging and nologging options. These two options have higher precedence at the schema object level than the tablespace level; therefore, it was possible to override the logging settings at the tablespace level with nologging setting at schema object level.

  • Why is the "Partition" tab gone from my Disk Utility???

Why is the "Partition" tab gone from my Disk Utility? How do I partition a disk?

    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc One if you are trying to partition your startup drive and after the installer loads select your language then click on the Continue button. After the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are trying to partition an external drive or a non-startup drive then simply open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

    Hi Ishrak,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly what you are trying to log into with your Apple ID, or what exactly you are seeing (alert message, directions, etc) when you try to do so. • When creating a table why should we give promary key

when creating a table why should we give promary key

    Hi Rambabu,
Primary key is needed so as to avoid duplicate entries and ensure that there are unique entries in the table.
For some applications, it is useful to uniquely identify the rows in a table by one or more columns so that you can process them in a specified sequence, for example. You can do this by assigning a “primary key.” The column names that are to create the table key are represented by the keywords PRIMARY KEY. The input values of the key columns defined in this way must not be a NULL value.
You can use the primary key to insert rows in a table in the same way as you insert rows in a base table when no primary key is defined. However, the system outputs an error message if you attempt to insert an existing value into the primary key column a second time, since the uniqueness of the column is ensured by defining the primary key.
A primary key can consist of multiple columns. However, it is unusual for a key to be constructed from more than five columns, since this makes it difficult for users to enter unique values. The arrangement of the columns behind the keywords PRIMARY KEY defines the key sequence.

  • Why should Adobe Reader fail to print because of settings in the Edit/Preferences?

    AdobeReaderDocumentCouldNotPrint.txt
Glyn Price Tue 17 March 2015
Why should Adobe Reader fail to print because of settings
    in the Edit/Preference?
    Adobe Reader XI Version 11.0.10
    MS Window 7
    File > Print > Print
    I got the error message:
The document could not be printed
I googled this error message and used the following
solution that worked i.e. it then printed successfully.
    Edit >  Preferences
Category: Security(Enhancement)   'Enable Protected  Mode at Startup'
It was checked, changed it to unchecked.
Category: Documents    'View documents in PDF/Mode'
It was set to 'Only for PDF/A'
    Set it to 'Never'
Exited Adobe Reader and restart it. Then it printed.
I had a look on another computer system (Adobe Reader XI Version 11.0.10
and MS Window 7) and on this different computer I could print
without doing the above two changes.
I'm a bit puzzled. Why preferences on one system were not
    needed on a different system?

Here is an elaborate method of troubleshooting this problem. There may be a simpler method if anybody wants to suggest one.
There is a general technique that is helpful in this situation. I can't give you complete instructions here, and I haven't tested this with regard to bluetooth devices, but here's the gist of it.
Create a second log-on account for your music projects. Configure it so that when you log in to the new music account, the drivers needed for the Bluetooth devices don't load. You do this in System Preferences: Accounts.
When it's time to do music, log out of your usual account and onto the new one.
When you install drivers for any peripheral, you have the option of installing them "for all users" or only for the user account that is active during the installation.
This governs whether the drivers go in root/library or root/Users/your name/library.
If drivers are in root/library, they will load whenever the Mac is booted up and will run for all users.
But if drivers are loaded in root/Users/your name/library, they will only load if you log in as "your name". If you have a second account called root/Users/music account/, and you log in under that, the drivers in "your name" will not load. Get it?
To get this working right you need to be knowledgeable about moving or deleting files in the /library/ directory and subdirectories, and you need to be careful because you can unwittingly cause some damage if you are not careful.
There is also the root/System/library directory, and in general you should never mess around with anything in there or you might hose your system.
In summary, I would start by using the installer programs for your BlueTooth devices and DE-installing all drivers. Reboot. Log back in as your usual user account. Then RE-install each driver and see if the installer program gives you the OPTION to installl for all users or just for this user. Choose the latter. Then log on to your new Music account and see if the problems go away.

  • ESOA :  Why should we choose ESOA

    Hi experts!!!
I recently entered into esoa practice. I have so many queries to put in.... Here are a few....
    1) how customer gets benifit out of this esoa...??? how it solves customer problems in present market.??
    2) In which form these services are served? (wsdl/ any common format acceptable by all kinds of applications or it is completely based on Netweaver platform?)
    3) If it is a wsdl, why should we go for PI 7.1 only...we can also generate wsdls from all previous versions ?
    4) According to my understanding from all the blogs & forums, all services will be developed and registered in ESR ( which resides locally in my company), then how these services are said to be global??
    5) what is the big difference PI 7.1 makes over the previous versions?
    6) How ES workplace is helpfull to my development?
    7) I have installed ESR & CE 7.1 into my system.. but i am unable to find proper support from SDN ?  Is it still have to come up? or Is no one using PI7.1 yet? or any other reasons??
    8) and most imortantly, I have not found any architectural details about ESR or PI 7.1 or CE 7.1. please ignore this question if i m wrong.
It would be great help to all...
    Regards,
    Pavani

    Hi Pavani,
Lot of questions. If you have gone through the ESOA Architecture/framework, you would have find answers to most of your questions.
    > 1) how customer gets benifit out of this esoa...??? how it solves customer problems in present market.??
SOA architecture is spreading with a good pace. Its always better to walk with market trends.
Customer can benfit from less implementation costs, fast implementations and finally the maintainace would be quite easier with ESOA
    > 2) In which form these services are served? (wsdl/ any common format acceptable by all kinds of applications or it is completely based on Netweaver platform?)
Yes it is WSDL. It is based on standards and acceptable to all SAP, Non-SAP applications.
    >
    > 3) If it is a wsdl, why should we go for PI 7.1 only...we can also generate wsdls from all previous versions ?
PI 7.1 contains ESR where you can define/design your new Enterprise services with some governace mechanism. Technically Enterprise Services are Web Services but it has strong governance mechanism. You can develop/define simple web services from previous PI versions.
    > 4) According to my understanding from all the blogs & forums, all services will be developed and registered in ESR ( which resides locally in my company), then how these services are said to be global??
Nope, they will be developed in ESR( Enterprise Services Repository) and would be registered in Service Registry not ESR.
    >
    > 5) what is the big difference PI 7.1 makes over the previous versions?
PI 7.1 is coming with lot of new features, but related to ESOA , main is the ESR.
    > 6) How ES workplace is helpfull to my development?
ES Workplace provide test servers where SAP has already hosted implemented services. You can consume that services using your applications. And documentation is provided along every Enterprise Service. SAP has hosted ES Woorkplace for evaluation purpose only
    > 7) I have installed ESR & CE 7.1 into my system.. but i am unable to find proper support from SDN ?  Is it still have to come up? or Is no one using PI7.1 yet? or any other reasons??
A lot of documentation is available and also forums are available for both CE and ESR. But it will take time to reach at atht level when compared to other Netweaver products
    > 8) and most imortantly, I have not found any architectural details about ESR or PI 7.1 or CE 7.1. please ignore this question if i m wrong.
Go through recent Teched Material, you will find a lot.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why use key-partitioning and key-associator features?

Why use key-partitioning and key-associator features?
What kind of applications are suitable for using key-associator and key-partitioning features?
Could you give me some example?
    Thank you

So the typical way is to use KeyAssociation. This is a single interface that uses a method
    public Object getAssociatedKey();
I believe this works on the ClusterService level (rather than say the Cache). So, say you have a Client and an Account cache where a Client can have multiple Accounts. Now both the Client and the Account object will implement KeyAssociation and return the client object as the AssociatedKey. This will cause these associated objects to live on the same partition.
Now you can do some clever tricks since you know these are on the same partition. These include using the BackingMap and EntryProcessors / InvocationService / Aggregators to return all the AccountIds associated with a client account (essentially a join).
Unfortunately, these are pretty advanced Coherence features so it is worth building them in a testcase first and getting them to work before you integrate them into your application.
    Best, Andrew.
PS. You could also use the KeyPartitioningStrategy, but I prefer the KeyAssociation (as do most people).

  • With the new ipad coming out soon, why should I buy the ipad 2?

with the new ipad coming out soon, why should I buy the ipad 2?

I can only echo what Pogo says about buying based on what it does today.
3 weeks ago I bought a Mac Mini. A new Mac Mini model has been rumoured to come out anywhere between the same week I made my purchase and the end of August. None's been released as yet.
I wanted one in the week of June that I bought mine so I bought it based on the fact that it did what I wanted and I couldn't imagine anything which could be added that I'd want - my MacBook Pro doesn't have Thunderbolt so the most likely addition isn't really going to be much use for me.
Basically you have to buy what you what based on what's out at the the time.
I can promise that within seconds of the iPad3 being released, the web will be full of rumours about the next one!

  • HT5012 Why should I click the accept button for a server certificate at every initial time although it is listed as a trusted root CA on iOS6?

I'm now using a root CA which was listed above.
But when I try to connect WLAN via EAP with RADIUS initially, I should click the accept button for the certificate of the RADIUS Server.
    Why should it work?

    Hi,
I'm still looking for the reason.
Isn't there any way which can avoid the verification for a public certificate of authentication server using EAP-TLS.
Why should I click the accept button in initial step for authenticating with RADIUS server using EAP-TLS although the root CA of the server certificate is listed in the default trusted CA on iOS?

  • Cpufrequtils: Why should I care, and acpi-cpufreq vs. p4_clockmod

I'm a cpufrequtils newbie. In the years I've been running Arch on my laptop, I've never set it up.
I wonder, why should I care about cpufrequtils? What should I know about the technology as a laptop user? Does the fact that I rarely unplug make a difference?
I also wonder what module I should be using for frequency scaling. The cpufrequtils article recommends acpi-cpufreq, but the article for my specific laptop recommends p4_clockmod (for some unspecified reason).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Just modprobe both acpi-cpufreq and p4-clockmod, only one of them should be able to load.
    the article wrote:
For older Intel CPUs, the command above may return with:
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq ([...]/acpi-cpufreq.ko): No such device
In this case, replace the kernel module acpi-cpufreq with speedstep-centrino, p4-clockmod or speedstep-ich.
CPU frequency scaling saves power and keeps your processor cooler. It's worth using on a desktop or a server, not just a laptop.
If you use the ondemand governor, and add:
    (sleep 5 && echo 11 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold)
to /etc/rc.local, you'll have basically zero performance loss. Usually it scales up the CPU at 95%, with this it will do it at 11% (you can't go lower atm).
You can load the  "cpufreq_stats" module and see what it's doing with cpufreq-info. You should notice your laptop fan spin down quite a bit once you set it up.
If you have a watt meter, you can take out the battery and see the power use drop from something like 17w to 12w.

  • Why should we go for ODI?

    Hi,
I know the Informatica 9.1.0. Now , I am learning ODI so getting some questions.
I am working with the Hyperion & ODI is used with the hyperion to fetch data from any source system.
I have few questions in my mind related to ODI.
why should I go for ODI? OR when should I use OID?
what is the benefits getting by ODI that does not available in other tools.
    Thanks

It might be worth starting to read through the features of ODI and related documentation to understand it strengths http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/data-integrator/overview/index.html
It is Oracle's strategic integration product so if you are working with EPM products then you will find more features than with Informatica.
I will let someone else provide information on when to use it because I have been here before on many occasions, it can all depend on what products you have currently, what your source/target systems, what your objectives are to whether it is for you.
    Cheers

  • Why should we queue?

    Hello Architects and Software enginners,
I think things that may be needed in a specific scenario, may not be crucial in another scenario, in other words I don't believe a common solution exists for all situations.
So here is my scenario and my question is do I need to use the queing mechanism in this case? We have an Oracle EBS 11.5.10 with DB 10.2.0.1 system.
We have to exchange cXML documents with a vendor. For outbound, we need to transform table data to a cXML document and send it to the vendor via https. For inbound, we need to get cXML docs from the vendor via https and create a flat file in our system to load to our EBS interface tables. All this will be done in bacth/asynchronous mode.
For outbound, the data is already in the EBS tables. Why can't I loop through to get the records, create the cXML documents (say using XML DB) and use utl_http to post to the vendor on the fly per schedule say 10 times a day? Another option would be when the records are created I can create the cXML and store in a temporary table as a clob and then post to vendor as per schedule. Why do I need to use queing, because queuing seems to do the same thing-store in a queue table, dequeue it from there and and process it?
Similarly for inbound why can't I get the cXML from the vendor, store it in a temp table as a clob and extract the text and create my file? Why should I use queueing? It just seems to be additional processing.
As you can see it is a very basic question so let the opinions, ideas, critiques, disagreements flow :-)
I highly appreciate your input as it will help determine how we architect our solution.
    Thanks
    Sandeep

    Hi Damorgan,
Appreciate it very much you taking the time to reply...on a weekend!. As a technologist I understand your point. But as business customers we have to look out for our best interests, so based on business realities I will disagree with some of your statements. I don't want to deviate from learning from you on the needs of AQ for this project. I wish we had met at the openworld so that we could have exchanged rants face to face, your EBS colleagues were targets of mine :-)
Now to your question. AQ is for real-time not batches. ...If you are going to batch it ... AQ is more technology than you need.
How is AQ real time? I am not trying to argue here, just trying to understand please bear with me and correct me if I am wrong. If you are queuing something, it means that you want to do something later, how many milliseconds afterwards that may be. I thought that was the whole point of queing so that users can continue doing what they are doing and leave the intensive processing to be done later without waiting online. Isn't this simply a batch that runs more often? A listener may be listening, wakes up every once in a while and processes the messages in batch-Again I don't know how this works but I am anticipating soemthing like this happens, please correct me. If there are disparate messages coming from many systems, queing makes sense in an EAI architecture. But in a point-to-point, as in this project, what is the point? :-)
Also, can I queue up cXML type of messages in clobs? I read somewhere that only native Oracle XML can be queued up in AQ. An example of cXML is below.
I would recommend that if your organization wishes to be competitive. And if you wish to have skills that are competitive in the marketplace you (your organization) start taking this technology seriously. Patch to 10.2.0.4 immediately and upgrade to 11.1.0.7 by August. Then throw away the antiquated batch mode model, use AQ, and communicate with your vendors in a more timely and efficient manner.
I would agree doing away with the batch if I understand AQ better. From what I read, I have explained my understanding of AQ earlier. We have had regular issues with EBS Workflow queueing mechanisms for e-mail notifications where things get piled up for no apparent reason and when we open an SR the inevitable result is "rebuild the queue, bounce Apache, bounce concurrent managers etc..." with no real resolution which is causing me to hesitate using AQ for financial documents.
Also, we will be upgrading to 11 soon but not soon enough for this project
