Why some mail from Comcast mail server is not received?

I am a new iMAC user (Mavericks 10.9.2). I just setup my Mail with 4 accounts using the guided setup on the MAC for the first account and then instructions from Comcast for the rest. All 4 accounts are setup for POP. All accounts are setup NOT to delete Email on the server for 1 month. Testing sending/receiving to/from the 4 accounts shows some very strange problems:
- Emails sent to any of these MAC mail accounts from a PC with Eudora (as the client) consistently arrive without any problems
- Emails sent from Comcast's webmail, from Outlook on an other PC and from the MAC itself via MAC mail end up on Comcast's server but never in the MAC's Inbox
I can see the Emails arriving on Comcast's server via Webmail from a PC. I also cc-ed myself and received all test Emals without any problems on the PC.
I called Comcast and their Email specialist said that they never heard of a problem like this one. They sent a test Email which was received on the PC but not on the MAC. They said that we should talk to Apple....
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi Suzy2014,
Here is a related - in a way - "weird one" for you: Ironically, I had Comcast Webmail and Macintosh Mail client problems of a weird nature, myself (on my new iMac 27": which is also running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2) - and: the issue(s) occurred THIS PAST EASTER 2014 weekend.
I had no problems w/ Comcast email forwarding, initially, after having many months ago done the initial set-up /forwarding. But for some strange reason, last Friday all my new (and older), Comcast-forwarded email to the iMac in question suddenly just evaporated off of that iMac. Something like 17 emails of all sorts from them; most since early 2014. Some involving service & changed billing costs /issues that land squarely in the lap of Comcast management
NOTE: I have lately begun having [unrelated to email] 'other problems' with Comcast - which came to light just late last week - I won't go into them here, for now, but: I wondered if Comcast could (somehow? I know it seems so unlikely; paranoid, even ... but stranger things have been proven after the fact in the computer business. Think about it...) Anyway ... could they have 'prevented' me from forwarding their emails to me; and /or screwed-up, or around, with my email - or other(?) settings, configs, etc. As an harassment tactic. Seriously - it's crossed my mind since last Thursday /Friday. Here is my email story, courtesy of Comcast /xFinity::
- The mail was there for a long time on my Mac;
- Then these other issues arose (not email related) with Comcast;
- My mail (POP acct't with them) was gone within an hour of me challenging them over the other stuff;
- I called their tech support first;
- the guy that finally came one wanted me to give him verbal "permission" to allow him to move around my iMac after I agreed to download their screen sharing app;
- I'm really fairly expert with Macs /OSX oddities, in particular; Apple refers to me as a 'sophisticated user.' Whatever. I don't want kudos, believe me: just the solutions - if they even exist.
- Anyway, the Comcast tech could not figure out why the email from them disappeared, nor why it would not re-download. Of course - it should have, as I set up forwarding it a long time ago; I assumed it would just re-download to the iMac 27. It did not.
- He eventually put me on hold - so I played devil's advocate, and quickly configured my OTHER new Mac: a  MacBook Air 13 /Apple Email client to have an identically config'd Comcast account in it. Before I even finished setting it up on the Air 13 - the Account Preferences on that laptop actually 'finished setting itself up' - and POOF - *all* of the missing mail that used to be on the iMac 27 immediately downloaded into the new mailbox I'd just set up on the MB Air 13;
- Odd, I thought.
- This guy came back online; he ended up resetting my Comcast login PWD; then he maneuvered my mouse all around the iMac 27 very quickly, changing settings (one of the things I noted to him was that the Comcast smtp server had gone 'offline' as of a few hours prior, and that I could not get it to come back online). Well that didn't work.
- He was brusque; and he ended up deleting my Comcast account totally on the iMac, and I reconfig'd it (by then I took over all the tasks, as I didn't like the way he skipped around the computer like he owned it, when I was capable of doing anything necessary for him); That 'plan' did not work, either.
- He never did explain possible reasons for any of these "phenomenon;" nor did he ever get the Comcast SMTP mail server to come online, either. He told me he had no idea what was going one, and told me to call Comcast's "for pay higher level of support service" - (I refused) - or to call AppleCare (which I 'd planned to do, anyway).
- Before I ended the call I had him observe as I logged into Comcast's [horrid] Website(s) and email account pages/settings I have, like you must. Oddly - MAIL FORWARDING from my Comcast email account to my primary email acct. *had been DISABLED.* How could this have just "happened?" Well - he refused to explain anything more. In short - he was useless, as support techs go.
- This phone call to Comcast tech support next came to an abrupt end; plus - he never disengaged the screen-sharing session he had me agree to engage; that made me a bit uncomfortable too, to say the least. I ended the still-on sharing session after he hung up - right away, myself - and deleted all instances of the Comcast sharing app.
- I of course called AppleCare; ironically, while waiting for a Sr. Advisor form the CPU Division to come on - suddenly the Comcast smtp sever suddenly came online; and the mail that would not again download to my iMac 27 - suddenly did - just like it did on the first-ever /new account I set up as a test (for my own edification, and knowledge of troubleshooting such things, across "like" computers) e.g., what I set-up while on hold with Comcast, on my MacBook Air 13. Which worked perfectly. I note this too: I went into the Keychain on both of these Macs of mine: I was suddenly locked-out of viewing the Comcast entries for PWDS for [their] mail incoming /outgoiong Keychain login /PWD entries. Shocking, really, as I've done that a million times beofre; and never - as full admin of all of my computers and networks - have seen THAT. A coincidence. I dunno. I suspect  ... something, though. I just don't know what - yet.
I bring this long story up (sorry for the length) - for one reason, actually. Comcast /xFinity does some spooky - even unsavory - things (not limited to email issues alone, trust me). That said : be careful with them; your networking; you Macs; your privacy, etc. I am rather suspicious of "them," now, and for several reasons, as noted.
Hope you have no more problems with them! Be well!

  • IOS 4.3.3 Cannot Get Mail from Comcast Exchange Server

I upgraded both my ipad and iphone to 4.3.3 yesterday and now I cannot access email from the Comcast Business Exchange server.   I have not changed any of the parameters on the ipad or iphone.  When I try to access the Comcast Server at mail.hmc1.comcast.net I get the message Cannot Get Mail on both my ipad and my iphone.  Everything worked great before the 4.3.3. upgrade.   All of my gmail accounts and my pop3 email account still work on the ipad and iphone.   Please help

Have you tried removing the accounts and re-adding them? That generally seems to work in an "if all else fails" situation but I've noticed that sometimes, troubleshooting can be too stressful, and it is more worth it to spend 2 minutes re-creating the account and another 10 minutes to let everything sync up.

  • Recent mail from POP acct server is not retained in mail app

In recent weeks (maybe months) iPhone email appears to be acting differently with my POP accounts. All POP accounts keep the mail on the server until deleted on a desktop. I have iPhone mail set to show last 100 emails. Emails are coming in and are usually (not always) shown on all four devices where POP clients download mail - including my iPhone. What has changed is that when an email is more than 100 emails back in the que - even though it is still in desktop Outlook and my MacBook Pro Mail inbox an on the server - it no longer appears in the iPhone inbox, it does not load from the server when I select load more, it cannot be found in an iPhone email search which searches the phone and server. It has simply disappeared from the iPhone email app even though it still exists on the (Yahoo Bizmail) server and in all other POP accounts. This is not the behavior of the Mail App before 6.x, even though all settings are the same including do not remove from server. Anybody else having this problem?

POP will do weird things like this. That's why POP should be avoided if it can. I would contact the email provider to see if they support IMAP. Using POP on device should resolve this issue.
Below is great Apple resource that explains about using POP on multiple devices and how it can cause issues.

    I hope this helps!

  • Not downloading all mail from comcast server older than 5 months

    Hey all,
I'm trying to download my mail from Comcast. Last time that i DL'ed mail to Thundermail was late March. For some reasons, it will only dl mail from 7/28/14 forward. I tried deleting my popstate.dat file, but all that did was DL the same stuff again, so now I have 4182 x 2 messages in my inbox.
any ideas why it's not going all the way back to early march? Is there some setting in Thunderbird that is preventing it from going back?
Back in January of this year, when I first installed thurndermail the program downloaded a full two years of e-mail.
    thx
    Mark

Since you are in this "company" are you in a Domain and using a Exchange Server? If so, what version of Windows server and version of Exchange server are they running?
Plus you could see if any problems are coming up by going to the Mail's menu item called 'Window' and select "Connection Doctor". This will pop-up and before you start make sure you look in the right hand corner to show Details and then do the check. This way you see where Mail is communication with the email server and then trace down what step it is failing.

  • How do I move mail from an old server to a new server?

I am rebuilding my server. The new server runs on OS X 10.9.4 with Server 3.1.2. The old server ran OS X 10.9.x and Server 3.x (the exact versions are not known).
Within the folder /Library/Server/Mail, I found the email stores for both systems.  I have gone through each folder and identified the 36 character string that serves to identify the user's mailbox and paired each one to a user id on both systems.  On the old system, there are multiple mailboxes for some users, and I think it is a result of the users being deleted and recreated: perhaps the system identified the identical name and assumed that the user might be different and therefore created a unique 36 character id for the mail system.
The trick is, I am trying to recover the mail from the old server.
I have attempted to copy the files which are human readable and formatted for SMTP transmission to the new server under the correct mailbox corresponding to the owning user (see screen shots below). The simple act of copying the files has not made these files visible via the IMAP protocol. I have tried restarting the mail service hoping that the Server app would rebuild whatever indexes need to be built so that the mail can be served via IMAP, and that has not worked either.
The question is, how do I get the mail from the old server mail boxes into the new server mailboxes?
This screen shot shows the location of one mail collection at /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail/[userid].  Mail sits in the "new" folder only for a moment before being processed and put into the "cur" folder.  Copying mail from the old server into the "new" folder produces an empty "new" folder, but one can see the files populate briefly before they are moved into the "cur" folder.
The next screen shot shows one email opened in TextEdit.  The format should look very familiar.  This is the same format that one would use to send SMTP requests to an SMTP server.  This particular example happens to be an email from a Gmail account to the PediatricHeartCenter.org domain to test the mail system when the old server was set up.  It was sent on 24 Jan 2014 and had text reading "Intended for Mavericks1. -Jared".

On further research, I have learned that OS X Server sets Dovecot to use the MailDir format.  The email messages can be removed from the folders and put back, and as long as they were present in the folder to begin with (received by Dovecot originally), they reflect in the Mail.app on client computers.  Deleting a file in the "cur" folder causes the file to disappear in Mail.app. Copying the file back into the "cur" folder will cause the file to reappear without any modification of an index file or any other system component, as long as the file was properly formatted by Dovecot to be identifiable to that folder.
According to Dovecot.org's review of MailDir found here (http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Ma,ilboxFormat/Maildir), the file name can be broken into simple pieces: " [unixtimestamp].[process id].[hostName],S=<message size>,W=<virtual message size>/2,[status tags]".  The original MailDir++ specification requires the string ":2," to appear after the virtual size, but this file naming format is not legal in Mac OS X, so Dovecot is modified by Apple to use "/2," instead.
The Dovecot's wiki describes inserting new messages as follows:
    Mail delivery
Qmail's how a message is delivered page suggests to deliver the mail like this:
Create a unique filename (only "time.pid.host" here, later Maildir spec has been updated to allow more uniqueness identifiers)
Do stat(tmp/<filename>). If the stat() found a file, wait 2 seconds and go back to step 1.
Create and write the message to the tmp/<filename>.
link() it into new/ directory. Although not mentioned here, the link() could again fail if the mail existed in new/ dir. In that case you should probably go back to step 1.
All this trouble is rather pointless. Only the first step is what really guarantees that the mails won't get overwritten, the rest just sounds nice. Even though they might catch a problem once in a while, they give no guaranteed protection and will just as easily pass duplicate filenames through and overwrite existing mails.
Step 2 is pointless because there's a race condition between steps 2 and 3. PID/host combination by itself should already guarantee that it never finds such a file. If it does, something's broken and the stat() check won't help since another process might be doing the same thing at the same time, and you end up writing to the same file in tmp/, causing the mail to get corrupted.
In step 4 the link() would fail if an identical file already existed in the maildir, right? Wrong. The file may already have been moved to cur/ directory, and since it may contain any number of flags by then you can't check with a simple stat() anymore if it exists or not.
Step 2 was pointed out to be useful if clock had moved backwards. However again this doesn't give any actual safety guarantees, because an identical base filename could already exist in cur/. Besides if the system was just rebooted, the file in tmp/ could probably be even overwritten safely (assuming it wasn't already link()ed to new/).
So really, all that's important in not getting mails overwritten in your maildir is the step 1: Always create filenames that are guaranteed to be unique. Forget about the 2 second waits and such that the Qmail's man page talks about.
The process described by the QMail man page referenced above suggests that as long as a file is placed in the "new" folder, that a mail reader can access it.  The mail reader then moves the file to the "cur" folder and "cleans up" the "new" folder.  This is clearly happening in OS X, because the messages are moving from "new" to "cur", but IMAP is still not serving these foreign messages to the remote readers.
The thought crossed my mind that perhaps it is the fact that the host name does not match, which would cause the failure, however changing the "host" portion of the name from the old-server to the new-server did not fix the issue.  Even with the new server name in the file name, the inserted message fails to appear in client Mail applications.
Within the file their is header information that still references the old machine. I'd like to not have to change the email files, because this will violate the integrity of the message. Also, this might take a lot of time or incur risks associated with poor automated processing. The header information should not be referenced by Dovecot, because the wiki page describing MailDir notes that neither Dovecot nor Dovecot's implementation of IMAP refers to the messages header information when moving and serving these mail files.
Unlike when using mbox as mailbox format, where mail headers (for example Status, X-UID, etc.) are used to determine and store meta-data, the mail headers within maildir files are (usually) notused for this purpose by dovecot; neither when mails are created/moved/etc. via IMAP nor when maildirs are placed (e.g. copied or moved in the filesystem) in a mail location (and then "imported" by dovecot). Therefore, it is (usually) not necessary, to strip any such mail headers at the MTA, MDA or LDA (as it is recommended with mbox).
This paragraph leads me to believe that after the mail box is identified that the content of the file becomes irrelevant to the system which manages. This suggests that we should be able to inject messages into a mailbox and have the system serve them as though they had belonged in that mailbox all along. Yet I have not found a way to do this.

  • HT2500 how do i get my mail from the pop server to my inbox

Can someone please help me ! I'm sure I did something by accident and don't know how to fix it. My problem is i don't see any emails in my inbox, however my account info says there is mail on the pop server. how do i get the mail from the pop server to my inbox?
    thank you for helping

    First try rebuilding your Inbox.
    Select the Inbox.
Under Mailbox in the Menu bar select Rebuild (last option in list)
Note: If you delete a POP account in Mail, it will delete any messages in the Inbox. It does not delete your custom folders or your sent messages.
If the messages have been deleted and are no longer on the server, you can restore from Time Machine.
Let us know if this helps.

  • NO INCOMING POP MAIL from exchange 2003 server.-

My university uses a exchange 2003 server for mail and pop access is enabled on all professor accounts. Since a couple of weeks ago I had no problem at all with my university mail account on apple mail, although I had to use :
    incoming mail server: "mail.myuniversity.edu.do"
    user: "DOMAIN\username"
    Password: "mypassword"
    Authentication: Password
After december the 5th I'm not getting any mail at all, even thou the activity monitor says "incoming messages.... 83 of 83" but no message shows up on the inbox. I have noticed that the number keeps growing (84, 85, 86...) but still no message in my inbox.
the weird thing is that I'm able to see my university mail in my iphone using the synced account settings in Itunes. I thought it was a problem of my machine I have made a clean format and reinstall of osX 10.6 with the 10.6.2 combo update. I did not transfered files nor configuration, just copied my documents and reconfigured mail from scratch. I did not imported any message. After all that, the problem persist.
I have used Connection Doctor and everything looks ok. The Detail window shows this:

But there is a (high) possibility that Gmail's server requires authentication (or certification) to connect to it.
I wonder if they're simply silently dropping emails in certain cases. I forgot earlier that I have a Gmail account. If I send an email from the command line on my home computer, which is on Comcast, the mail log shows that I successfully connect to Gmail, the message is sent and accepted by Gmail, but the email never arrives in my inbox. I've tried several times with the same result.
However, emails from a web server from work get through to Gmail without a problem. So I'd bet it's a case of them not delivering mail from Comcast IP addresses.
For grins, I also tried sending to my Yahoo email account from my home computer and their server at least refuses the connection and I get an error message stating that it's because it's a residential IP address.
In this case you need an SMTP client (=a software which directly sends the mail to the Gmail server) which supports authentication.
I think this might also be possible with Postfix by editing the configuration files. I know I had to set up authentication to send emails to my work address directly from my home computers, but I haven't been able to get the same thing to work with Gmail yet. If I get a chance, I'll look into it again later tonight.

  • Cannot send mail from mac mail or Entourage

    Hi guys,
Wondered if anyone out there can shed some light on this little problem.
I use Entourage for my emails & all was working fine until yesterday. I can receive mail from all and sundry but I can't send anything. I subscribe to ntlworld internet service and if log onto my email through their webmail, then it's fine. I've tried sending mail from mac mail and I get the same problem. I've been onto microsoft support & gone through all the troubleshooting with Entourage. The Entourage techy suggested it was my internet provider blocking my emails as they think I'm a spammer?? I phoned ntl & they insist it's nothing to do with them as I can send/receive from the website. (If I send an email with the address @ntlworld it's fine, but any other address i.e. all my clients/mates etc just stays in my outbox.
Nothing on any of my settings has changed so I'm at a loss what to do next.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Mel

it may be that your server (internet provider) has just started blocking outgoing mails not authenticated by them.
Go to your account set up...
and fill in the following details.
    SMTP SERVER: smtp.mac.com
then click on advanced sending otions...
click on override default SMTP port... type 587
click on SMTP servber requires authentication...
use same setting as receiving mail server.
    try this...

  • User not able to send the mail from other mail box on outlook 2007

In my outlook(2007), i am using my mail box to send the mail and receiving the mail every thing working fine, now what happened , i am adding one of my users mail box to my outlook profile, and trying to send the mail from that mail box, when ever
i am trying to send its give me the message called message undelivered  and permission error. as i am full permission on that users mail box. but still getting that issue.

    HI Paul,
In exchange, you have something called Send as permission as well. Try to give send as permission to your self from the user's mailbox.
In exchange> Reciepient config> Mailboxes> user mailbox> right click> Full Send as permssion
    or,
Add-ADPermission -Identity "user1" -User "[email protected]" -ExtendedRights Send-As
After you add your self in send as permission you need to wait for some time to propagate the settings or you can forcefully reset the information store services
    That should solve your issue.

The e-mail address I have tested it for several times and there is no problem.
Anyone has any clue about this error?

    Hi.
    This I have seen before...
It can be that the SMTP relay server is configured to only allow certain IP ranges or addresses.
It can be that the firewall on the SP server does not allow for SMTP traffic (normally 25, for example for Exchange).
It can be that there is an Antivirus on the SP server(Client AV) that prohobits the Timer service to send email from this server. I have seen MacAfee do this. Needed an policy change.
If, its the builtin SMTP service you are using, check this link:
    http://blog.sharepointrx.com/2010/11/18/setting-up-the-iis-smtp-server-for-sending-email-from-sharepoint-2010-on-server-2008-r2/
    Check that and try again.
