Why sqlplus / as sysdba create 4 connections?
Hi all,
I have a 4 node rac set-up running 11.2.0.2.
If I log on to one of the 4 servers and connect to the database using sqlplus "/ as sysdba" it connects to the local database but also
creates another 4 connections (one on each instance) so I end up with 5 connections. I wanted to know
a) why it does this,
b) how it does this
c) can I stop it doing this (if I just so wanted to?)
Many thanks
Hi Billy,
your response made me dig a bit deeper, and I found out what it was!
My query to return sessions was from gv$session, and I was using the gv$session.module column to show the connection.
However, if I changed this from module to gv$session, it returned the oracle PZ99 process.
Looking on Metalink, I see this process is used to return data from remote nodes and was introduced in 10g RAC.
Looking at the columns together, you will see way I thought the way I did originally!

Oracle instance is running but sqlplus "/as sysdba" says connected to idle.
Hi,
Oracle RAC is running(started the RAC using "srvctl start database -d hacmp") but when i am trying to connect to database using sqlplus "/as sysdba" it says "connected to idle instance".
Any idea what could be the issue here?
I have ORACLE_SID exported.

Connected to an idle instance.
SQLIt's not a SQL*Plus bug but a Oracle feature: when you try to connect to a local Oracle instance Oracle computes the shared memory key (used by the instance SGA) using ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID: if you add a character to ORACLE_HOME, the shared memory key will be different and Oracle does not find the instance and says "connected to an idle instance".

Unable to connect to Oracle using OS authentication (sqlplus / as sysdba)
Hello,
When I try to connect locally ,using OS authentication ( sqlplus / as sysdba ), on a Oracle database, I get "ORA-01031: insufficient privileges" error.
OS: Windows XP
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Prod.
connecting as sysdba using sys/pasword works.
I have setup :
-> Log on as a batch job
-> Log on as a service
I am also member of ORA_DBA group.
I mention that connecting "/ as sysdba" worked many months after I've installed the Oracle database. But at some moment in time connecting "/ as sysdba" was no longer possible.

Thank you for any suggestion.Hi,
I have the same issues from the beginning..
I have two Oracle homes ( One for earlier installed SOA10g, and another for current installing SOA11g).
I have the right sqlora.net file. I have removed the old path and reset to point the new oracle home. I have this home entry as the first entry in my Universal installer too.
I AM ABLE TO CONNECT WITH sys USER AS SYSDBA on THE SAME SYSTEM ( I MEAN WHERE i INSTALLED THE DATABASE) USING THE command prompt.
But I am not able to connect as the SYSDBA with sys ACCOUNT through the SQLDeveloper tool. or RCU tool? Any help please. Again I am able to connect as a normal user through the SQL developer using the SYSTEM account.

I coud not connect by sqlplus / as sysdba
export ORACLE_SID=prod
sqlplus / as sysdbait gives the following error:
ora-01030:insufficient privilege
how could i login by / as sysdba? do i need some setting? You should create a special group for 'dba'.
Some installations also prefer you create an 'oinstall', but I prefer not to use it myself.
Rather, I just use the 'dba' group.
You should have an entry in your /etc/group file similar to:
dba:!:201:oracle
Then, in your password file, you should see the 'group' field (4th field) with the group ID that is in the /etc/group file.
oracle:!:215:201::/home/oracle:/usr/bin/ksh
Above, notice that the password entry notes the Oracle User ID (UID) is 215, and the Group ID (GID) is 201.
This is just an example (of course), and yours will be different.
As a recommendation, you might make a DBA group with ID 501 and then change the Oracle group ID to 501. -
I think I already disabled all the updating functions, yet, SOMETIMES when I start Firefox, (with about:blank), my network monitor shows one to five connections to IP addresses mostly in the 74.125.225.x, 74.125.227.x, 74.125.228.x, and 72.21.x.x ranges. Those ranges include Google, Amazon, and Youtube.
I use Kaspersky, and have scanned multiple times for malware, and even had their technical support look into my computer. They see no malware. It is the Kaspersky Network Monitor that revealed the problem.
As I find them happening, I try to jot down the addresses, (quickly, because some of these connections only last a second or two), then add those to a firewall rule I created to try to combat the problem. Yet, next time I start, new addresses are "attacking". Of course, some get away, because I don't get the address jotted down before it goes away. At one point I used masking that ended up keeping me from Google and Youtube, so I have to add the addresses individually, and my block list in that one rule is 13 items long now. The only IPs not in those ranges are 23.5.251.27, and 173.194.46.5. Not sure where those go.
I used to get attacked by addresses in the range that includes Amazon ... 72.21.x.x. I have a separate firewall rule for them that has 33 addresses being blocked.
I should not have to do all that. Firefox should start and just sit there quietly until I start clicking or typing in it. This has been happening in Firefox versions going back to 11. May have gone on before that, but I wasn't tracking it then.
Also, it doesn't always happen, or, more precisely, with addresses I have not already blocked, (because my only way to know it's happening is when the connections are allowed to be made). It does not always happen right after Firefox is up, but sometimes several minutes later. I have started Firefox and just sat and watched the network monitor without doing anything in Firefox, and have seen this happen up to 15 minutes after I start Firefox ... mostly just two or three minutes when there's a delay at all.Firefox does not do anything but sit on about:blank after I start it as long as I have a firewall rule enabled that completely blocks these subnets:
74.125.222.0/24
74.125.227.0/24
74.125.228.0/24
173.194.46.0/24
173.194.115.0/24
173.194.121.0/24
64.233.171.0/24
54.230.90.0/24
54.230.88.0/24
72.21.194.0/24
72.21.195.0/24
72.21.215.0/24
207.171.163.0/24
Otherwise, Fire fox creates connections to one to five addresses in those ranges. Note that there are more than 5 subnets above, but usually three connections satisfies whatever purpose these connections are being made for. If I had some links or whatever that is causing these connections, I would expect all of them would come up every time.
Also, these connections do not start immediately upon starting Firefox, they wait up to 15 minutes to start ... fifteen minutes of just sitting idle ... no actions on my part that could possibly initiate them. Usually these start within three minutes. A typical ploy of malware is to wait until no one is looking, or the until there's a forest to put their tree in so it won't be noticed.
While the above rules are in place, I do not have access to Amazon, Youtube, or Google, (or any of the various blog sites and services sponsored by Google, including Google Maps and Gmail). That list may not be complete, as I have other firewall rules in place that mainly block individual addresses.
It seems to me as simple as; figure out who owns those subnets, and you have your bad guys. Then go after them.
It's true that I have a bookmarks to Google, Gmail, and Youtube, but these are not "active" bookmarks nor RSS feeds. I have not voluntarily gone to Amazon on this computer.
The traffic being transmitted is unknown. It is usually not extremely large amounts of data ... less than a meg, but I have seen close to a Gig transmitted out of my computer, and over 400 meg transmitted to my computer, when I was not paying attention to block the offender. Even if it's small amounts, things like cookies, path structures, configuration settings, histories, etc. do not involve a lot of data, but, to me, represent a security breach, if someone decides to look at them unsolicited by me, not unlike your landlord, mortgage holder, or neighborhood police officer walking into your home while you're not there, and taking pictures of, or simply inventorying your belongings.
It is VERY much like some sort of backdoor malware. No malware is detected on my computer.
I looked at the suggestion above for OS changes for logging HTTP activity, but the author neglected to include instructions for backing out these changes after using them. If this were to create more jewels in a drawer the thief has access to, reformatting and restoring my drive is not the kind of back out process I enjoy. Therefore it would be foolish to apply them. To me it would be like bungee diving with no bungee. Fun until you hit the bottom. Give me the bungee, let me make sure it's short enough, then I'll dive. -

i would like to log in sqlplus (user)/(password) as sysdba without writing the user and password just want to write " sqlplus / as sysdba "
any help???
thank you dearsHi,
In the Oracle server you are able to connect using sqlplus / as sysdba. From a client, you can create a Wallet in order to use the Secure External Password Store
When clients are configured to use the secure external password store, applications can connect to a database with the following CONNECT statement syntax, without specifying database login credentials: connect /@db_connect_string where db_connect_string is a valid connect string to access the intended database, such as the service name, URL, or alias as illustrated in the earlier examples.

Problem with EJB and JMS - Failed to obtain/create connection
hello ejb and jms programmers,
My problem is my topic MDB keep on retrieving the same message when there is a database connection failure. Maybe somebody could help me how to prevent to retrieve the same data?
Given:
- I purposedly turn off the pointbase database because im testing my error handling.
- Im using SJSAS 8 as my application server.
- My message Driven Bean of topic type.
- Im using CMP for my entity bean
Here is the scenario of whats happening - step by step:
1. A separate application publishes a message to JMS queue server
2. My MDB retrieves this message and do some processing then inserts a record (transaction history) in my database
3. But my db is turned off or down
4. My MDB sends a successful processing reply to the JMS queue server
5. Then i noticed that my server.log keeps on growing so when i opened it, the record was not inserted and printed the stacktrace below "RAR5117 : Failed to obtain/create connection. Reason : javax.transaction.SystemException" (complete stacktrace below)
6. I understand the cause of the stacktrace is because the DB is turned off. But what i dont understand is that my MDB keeps on reading the same message. Since my MDB is of topic type, isnt a topic MDB supposedly reads a message only once???
So my questions are:
1. how do i handle insert database error?
2. how can i stop my MDB from processing the same message?
3. any better suggestions?
Thank you in advance :)

at com.sun.jdo.spi.persistence.support.sqlstore.impl.TransactionImpl.getConnection(TransactionImpl.java:1339)Hi annie,
Wherever you are handling database transactions,
you'd not be able to create a Connection if database
is closed (I think you mentioned turning off the
database) then at this condition, you should
certainly throw a System level exception and stop all
processing with some meaningful flow to indicate a
failure (like display message on UI). Even
network problems are handled by exceptions... so I
don't see a reason why you didn't wrap it in the
first place.
Anyway, try handling specific exceptions rather than
the general Exception... this will give you a better
idea of what to do in case of an exception.Yes i know this. I am practicing this in my non-j2ee server applications. But the j2ee app im making, i just pass the db url in the descriptor and the app server automatically creates the connection for my app. So where would i put exception handling?
2. how can i stop my MDB from processing the same
message?Guaranteed delivery is not supposed to stop
processing. It will continue to process the message
after certain intervals till the message is
delivered. You shouldn't deliver it at all, if you
are able to detect that the database is off
The problem here is that my MDB automatically retrieves the message from the JMS queue server. Im not the one retrieving the messages manually.
My assumed behavior of topic MDB is once the a certain MDB retrieves a message it will not retrieve the same message anymore.
thank you in advance.

Why can't I create a response to an email from the Viewer window?
Why can't I create a response to an email from the Viewer window?
When I select an email to respond to in the viewer window and click on the respond arrow that appears just under the header, a new response email opens for a split second then disappears.
I have to actually click on and open the email message in its own screen to be able to then click on the respond arrow and succeed in having Mail open a response email that I can edit - one that remains open.
This seems to be a bug that we need to have squashed.
SteveDo I have to connect the iPad to a computer to make this work? Is the fact that I used another email address to set up my Apple ID years ago causing the problem? A friend of mine just got a new iPod and he was able to set up a me.com account. I am feeling rather stupid. Hope someone here can help.

Why can't I create a document in my Facebook group on my iPad. It won't let me input any text into the text box field after I create a new document. Thanks.
Just thought I'd add my solution, I decided to go with WebDAV and I think it actually works better than the iTunes way, the steps are pretty much the same but avoiding the iTunes interface just makes things easier and faster.
I followed this guide but it does have a small mistake in the httpd-dav.conf file, on line 2, where it's WebServer/WebDAV">, it should be <Directory "/Library/WebServer/WebDAV">.
The tricky part is setting permissions which if wrong will give you errors when connecting with the iPad, I opted to set all to Read&Write since my home network has a hardware firewall. Another convenience was to add an alias to the webdav share on the Desktop.
I'm still expecting the call from Apple but even if they fix the iTunes I'm sticking with WebDAV, atleast until I see what's new with iOS5 and iCloud this fall which should bring true sync for documents (I'm hoping that they will offer encryption with my own keys, if not, then I'll probably keep using WebDAV). -
Problem creating connection to DB
I get the following error : "Test failed: IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection"
Database version: 12g
Application Name: jdeveloper 12
Description :
while creating connection in jdeveloper with the database 12g , under the schema name 'HR' , to whome i m connecting successfully while using 'sqlplus' , i encountered the above stated error.
From : Oracle UserThanks for that. That actually worked (well in a roundabout
sort of way). I'll explain: It turns out that the initial
connection string that I was using also works as well!! This was:
Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=[MACHIINE NAME];Initial
Catalog=[ANY EXISTING DB NAME];Uid=[ENTERPRISE MANAGER
LOGIN];Pwd=[ENTERPRISE MANAGER LOGIN PWD];
HOWEVER after doing a bit of further investigation, I
discovered that Dreamweaver didn't like my PASSWORD!! I'm reluctant
to say this is a bug before someone else can verify this for me.
Basically, Dreamweaver doesn't like the substring "$$" in the
password!! A single "$" is fine, but not "$$" !!! I've not tested
it with other (sub)strings so I'm not sure how "widespread" this
problem might be. I admit it would be a rather obscure bug to
uncover but, pretty significant I believe.
The fact that passwords of this nature work fine in SQL
Server/ Enterprise Manager would lead me to conclude that this is
not a problem with SQL Server 2000.
If you could give that a quick check and let us know that'd
be really good.
Thanks... -

How to track the no of log-in attempts made for this database either success or failure.
Any sys table is there to track the records
Thanks!Unless you have changed the defaults, all connect attempts by normal users are logged to the sys.ayd$ table, and all connects as sysdba are logged to files in audit_file_dest (Unix) or the application log (Windows).

How to create connection objects in the NTDS settings container of a DC with LDIFDE
The following link shows some examples of how to automate creating subnets without having to use the sites and services console: http://codeidol.com/active-directory/active-directory/Site-Topology/Creating-a-Subnet/
My question is how can use LDIFDE to create connection objects? We don't use the defaultipsitelink and are creating the connections manaully. How can I use LDIFDE to create connection objects like this? I have not been able to find any examples on the internet.
Thanks for any replies.KCC does the job of creating connection object automatically reading site/subnet/sitelink info, so why you need to create manually.
