Why start some daemon as their own users (e.g. mpd, transmission)

In the arch wiki it is shown how to set up this daemons so that they start as their own users,a user for each daemon. Why not just use you user, the same as with normal commands ? Is it because of security ?

It is because of security, indeed. Every process should run with the exact set of permissions it needs to fulfill its task. But in the cases of MPD and transmission, it is mostly because Linux is designed as a multi-user system. In an optimal setting, there should only be one MPD and one torrent client running on a single system, so running the daemons as on their own users makes a lot of sense, because those daemons have interfaces, that can be fine-tuned to allow or block certain users and sources.
As a rule of thumb, if a daemon does not require either root access (eg. is not a system process) or read/write access to user's folders in /home (like the dropbox "daemon" would), them it is wise to run it as its own user. It's both, more secure and easier to maintain.

  • Finder suddenly started opening folders in their own window

    Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone knows what might cause Finder to suddenly start opening folders in their own window even though the Finder preference to do that is unchecked? Before this started happening, all folders would open in the same window (the default behavior).
This happens whether I have my external keyboard plugged in or not and I've verified that the Command, ALT & Control keys are not stuck in any way on both the MBP keyboard and the external keyboard. I've also shutdown the MBP and restarted just to be sure.
Ideas? Is there a command line setting that I should look at or some config file that would tell me if it's incorrectly set?
    Rey...

    Two things to try:
    1) check the box in Finder > Preferences > General tab, then relaunch Finder, then go back and UNcheck that box, and relaunch Finder again (to relaunch Finder, hold the option key and click-and-hold the Finder icon in the dock, then select Relaunch, or use Apple menu > Force Quit)
    2) trash the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, then restart (the OS will recreate the plist file; sometimes they become corrupt)

  • I got my iPhone 5 s almost a month ago and updated its iOS but from there on I started having problems, the ph sometimes doesn't respond at all to the touch or apps start to open on their own very rapidly and this continues till it can go no further!

I got my iPhone 5 almost a month ago and updated its iOS but from there on I started having problems, the ph sometimes doesn't respond at all to the touch or apps start to open on their own very rapidly and this continues till it can go no further!

    First steps in troubleshooting:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Then reset: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Why do apps open on their own?

I have a Mac Mini with Mountain LIon.
Almsot daily one or two apps or more will boot up on their own.
    Why?

    Hi,
    An Example.
At Computer Start Up and background support app for the Messages and FaceTime Apps called IMAgent also starts up.
This "Listens" for Off Line Messages if you have set Messages up for iMessages, AIM and some Jabber Servers.
It also "Listens" for calls to the ID you are using in FaceTime.
That is to say that you should have already set up these apps.
If FaceTime is set to On in the Preferences but is not Started up then an Off Line call can start up the app.
    It is similar in Messages
As Indicated the FaceTime app can be set to Off.
The Messages App as a setting in Messages Menu > Preferences > General Section about "When I Quit, Set the Status to Off Line"  when this box is ticked IMAgent will not start up the app with Off Line Messages.
As you say "Almost Daily" I an presuming that this is not on Computer Start Up ?
if that is happening it it set in System Preferences > Users and Groups > Your account > Login Items.

  • Why Portlet regions cannot have their own style ? We need to use it.

We need to visually group portlets on the same page.
So we need to give different background different
But Portlet regions cannot have their own style.
    So we cannot do it.
Can we by pass this restriction? How ? ( We try to use html template, html content layout. But they don’t work.)
Is this restriction will remove from future versions? (especilly 11g)
    Thanks.

We ran into the same thing. I'm assuming you want to display different portlets on the same page with different looks. Here are a few things you might try (depending on the portlets, of course).
    - Adding another .css file in the cascade within the UI template
    - If using page portlets, add your own formatting to the page
    - Use dynamic pages with hard-coded formatting
None of these will work for all cases, mind you. But it might give you a starting point. Good luck!

  • Why doesn't Apple have their own branded HDMI to Mini cable?

I just bought a second 27" monitor (not a Thunder Display) with HDMI connectivity, but I have to buy an off-brand cable to connect to my iMac. What gives?

I think it gets to what Apple has decided to focus on as their core products. Apple tends now to focus on manufacturing things that are unique. The monitors that Apple sells have some unique aspects, and they do sell the unique cables for those (thunderbolt, mini-DV, etc.). Since the ports on the Apple computers are unique (thunderbolt, mini-DV), Apple does sell an adaptor for those, but the adaptor just gets you to an industry standard interface (e.g. HDMI, VGA). Once you are where you can buy industry provided standard products (e.g. HDMI cable), Apple tends to not try to sell products that compete in that market. If Apple sold a unique HDMI monitor still, I think it would be also selling the cable you are asking about, but Apple is out of that market now. Similarly, Apple doesn't make its own hard drives, you have to buy those from third parties.
Apple doesn't sell its own brand of USB-USB cable, but it does sell the unique cable that is USB on one end and Apple iphone/ipod connector on the other end. Again, that's a unique interface.
That's the logic, I think, behind Apple's position. I don't think it's entirely consistent, but it's probably how they are thinking about this.

  • Billing Errors - Why can't adobe manage their own billing???????

Our billing information is correct, fyi:
This is the error message we are now getting after a week of trying to update our new expiry date:
"We're sorry, the billing information on file could not be used for this payment. Please update your billing information."  with no link to fix, report, or manage this in any way.
For an IT company, it's pretty pathetic that you can't even take a credit card online and update your own billing information, so companies can purchase your services.
    Please fix.

    Thanks MS-MacTech
I did try Safari as well as Firefox.  I was able to update my credit card information (it worked in FF but not Safari), but when we try to add a new user, the message still says, "We're sorry, the billing information on file could not be used for this payment. Please update your billing information."

  • Both my iPhones have started playing music on their own

I have an iPhone 5c and my wife has a brand new iPhone 5s. Last week, her phone suddenly started playing the Pup Fiction soundtrack without any reason I was out of town at the time).
Yesterday and today, my iPhone started playing the Dexter theme tune, which I use as my ringtone (my wife doesn't use Pulp Fiction as her ring tone - she doens't even listen to it).
Both phones share an iTunes account, but we each have our own iCloud account for email, calendars, documents, etc.
In all three cases of this happening, neither phone was being used. They were just sitting on the desk.
    What could be causing this?

When the problem happens the IPad becomes unusable. Can touch anything on the screen or even the home or power button.
The only thing that works is a reset.
A brightness icon comes up big on the screen as well when this is happening
In that case you may want to consider resetting to factory settings (basically starting over from scratch). Or a trip to the Genious bar at your local Apple store, if you have one close by.

  • Recently updated addons open their own page when I start Firefox

Every time I update an addon to a new version I get a page telling me I've successfully updated that particular addon whenever I start Firefox. It's is very irritating.
The pages don't appear in the Tools/Options/General/Home page box but they open every time I start the browser.
I already have a page for Colorful Tabs and another for Webmail Notifier and I can't disable them unless I disable the addons. However, I don't think this is an addon problem, but a Firefox one.

Some addons load their own page immediately after an update of that extension - once - to explain what the update is all about, such as new or improved features. If that page is being displayed more than once, something is wrong in Firefox prefs.
If you don't want those pages displayed ever, you'll have to check with support for each extension that does that, to see how that "first run" page can be turned off for each each extension. I am not aware of a "standard" pref that covers every extension that does it, and I don't either of the two extensions installed that you mentioned to be able to look for a pref like that.

  • Fleet phones: Why must each user have their own App Store account?

I've purchased roughly 25 iPhones for my employees and am trying to lumber through the tedious process of managing these as fleet assets.  There are a handful of mission-critical apps I'd like to deploy.  I've signed up with an MDM platform (Bushel).  I've enrolled in both of Apple's fleet programs (VPP and DEP).  And, still, I'm running into precisely the obstacle I'm needing to get around:  the requirement that every user has their own individual App Store account, with a Credit Card number on file, etc.
Why must this be?  These are company-owned phones.  Most of my employees are unionized and, quite frankly, the union is none too happy about the nature of the apps I'm deploying (which have to do with GPS tracking and time/attendance).  I simply cannot require my union employees to sign up for an account in their names and require a credit card number.
Even lowly Blackberry figured this out a long time ago.  If Apple is going after more fleet business, they need to become more fleet friendly.

I did some searches before my post, but actually found some things AFTER I made my post that sounded encouraging. If I understand correctly, we should be able to continue sharing the AppleID we use to buy apps and music on all of our devices. We can configure our personal devices and computers to use separate personal iCloud accounts, but somehow share the music and apps with each other. I guess I'm still not clear on how it'll work. :-)

  • Why is it that some songs get listed on their own even though they are part of an album?

Why is it that some songs get listed on their own even though they are part of an album? They are always songs that I had on my computer not imported from a cd using iTunes. I have verified that all the info is correct and matches the other songs in the album. Sometimes I can check the "compilation" box on all the songs in the album and that will put them in order and in the same listing. I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out.

    Good One CL.
What I did in this case is select all the songs in the album and select Get Info and see if  Album Artist and Album and Sort Artist and Sort Album Artist and Sort Album are the same.

  • Is this the start... Verizon is blocking Google Wallet which is very nice, and you probably don't know they are creating their own Verizon Wallet

I have been with this company for over 10 years and frankly I always overlooked one thing wasn't to keen on and that was some of the services Verizon offered on their website which many of the account related services they have as apps so you can view from your phone are good and useful.  I have been an Android user since the first Moto Droid to the Incredible and Inc2, then I though I was gonna go iphone, until I was able to use one for a month.  Don't get me wrong it wasn't bad it was my brothers 4G on another network when he upgraded to the 4GS.  Anyway no real problems other than Android just has more to offer so I went with the Nexus Galaxy and stayed with Verizon, after I was flipping a coin to go to Sprint.  Anyway the reason I am leaving Verizon is due to their attempt to create apps to try to compete with googles apps and Verizon charges...  you can find most for free from the droid market(which is the Play store now) such as Navigation.  The free Google Nav is awesome, I also have google voice(free)  so I get text messages emailed to me and vmails emailed and texted to me as well as being able to listen straight from phone by pushing play by the missed call.  Verizon continutes to create these apps that also cost money and aren't near as good.  I actually feel bad for the people who think the VZ nav is in fact the google nav.  Now they are blocking a new service of Google's called Google Wallet.  It's free and really cool, but Verizon blocks you from installing it or using it and Verizon is spending over a 100,000,000 dollars to create their own Wallet APP  that i'm sure won't be free.  So it's not that one app as to why I am leaving, its a number of things that as an experienced user and add the fact that  I work in the tech industry, in sales that I Verizon taking advantage of customers, and I don't work that way or like it.   Okay you go buy a verizon phone, it will have the VZ Nav right there on the home screen, however there will be no google Nav, and for newbies they usually think this is the navigation everyone talks about.  You have to go download the Google Maps which is a turn by turn navigation always up to date and is awesome.  I watch my kid driving down the road at all times for free.   My point is now that their blocking Google Wallet because they are creating there own wallet, which won't be as good, and probably cost money to even spend money meaning they will charge for it.  What is the next brilliant thing that Google comes out with  that you can intergrate into your Google services.    So what is the point of trying to compete with Google on apps, I mean the Verizon wallet?  Why it makes no sense.  Why block an app thus not giving you the luxery.  They have their reasons of course such as security, and other reasons that it could cause problems but, hey if you dare to spend the outrageous amount of money to activate your hostspot to connect your computer wirelessly in a park.  75% of the people who do this are going to be on an unsecured network that anyone can connect to even with security turned on.  So they say there worried about security on the wallet app, because someone may cold get access to your small amount that most people keep on the google wallet but the wireless hotspot is putting much more that money out there. it's putting personal things and files on your computer out there.  I just dont' get why they can't provide their songs and ring tones and apps that allow you to see you data usage and leave the apps for the Google market.  For you who don't know please download google maps and you will have an awesome navivation.  Also google talk, voice, chat, and there apps on the google market for free such as a punch clock for time.  I saw one for over $14 on the verison app store.  So stick to what you are good at ,and don't block apps that other companies aren't blocking including at&T now, and they were in on the $100,000,000 to create this app along with Tmoblie and Verizon.  I use an android because of the capapbilites that google gives you, and the apps that they offer for free or no money.  Go look in the Verizon apps and see how much you will pay.  Most that cost money come preinstalled on your phone so all you have to do is use it and you start getting charged.  This is a 3 year decision making.  I don't like that people can easily get charged for services without even knowing just because the app was installed and they used it once.  Just stay with what your good at and let the android users rightly use the google apps.  After all Google Saved your business if you really want to think about it.  If you didn't have the android OS, how many sales would you be getting?  Where would your company be.  This app was developed by Google which means it ties into everything else such as making online payments with the google card.  Blocking APPS developed by the developer of the Operating System that single handedly changed  the game, and has Made  you as a company far better off than you would have ever been had they not developed android.  Not a good Idea.  Bite the hand that feeds you.
