Why still use old versions of Oracle??

Hi All,
I was just wondering what are some reasons why organizations continue to use older versions of Oracle like 7 and 8i when we are now at version 11g?
I would love to hear what everyone has to say.
Thanks,

Mogens Norgaard (Oracle Insights) says that most users only need version
7.3 and that advances since then are for the UPS's and eBays of this world.
Disagree. Totally.
Oracle OPS cannot be compared to Oracle RAC. 7.3's partition views cannot be compared to
proper partitioning. And then what about features such as FGAC, rman, ASM, Apex, materialised
views - just to mention a few?I readily accept that Oracle is a good deal more sophisticated now than it was in
version 7. I think that Norgaard - a man with no axe to grind with Oracle and who
is a highly respected Oracle database practitioner - is talking about an "average Joe Sixpack
run-of-the-mill OLTP system".
Why do you think he made this point -
"Most customers really only need Oracle version 7.3 with respect to features"? (p 92 of the book).
All of these we use. In production. For 24x7 corporate mission critical systems. It would be
laughable to suggest that these could run on Oracle 7 and provide as a robust, flexible,
performant and scalable solution as using 10g or 11g.I accept this also - it's just that Norgaard is saying that "most" customers don't need
Oracle after 7.3.
I would tend to agree - in particular, the (totally free) functionality available
from, say, PostgreSQL and/or Firebird gives you more than this.
Open Source databases? Even more laughable. There is no way that these can compare
to Oracle. Not when doing intensive processing. Not when needing scalability, availability
and redundancy.Look [url http://kevinclosson.wordpress.com/2007/07/18/application-server-benchmark-proves-postgresql-is-the-best-enterprise-database-server-new-specjappserver2004-cost-metric-introduced-too/]here and in particular at the post of Clemens Eisserer
Open source databases have come on in leaps and bounds in recent
years and represent a value for money solution in many cases where
an Oracle licence would be prohibitive.
I have a SE database on a small 2 CPU server that at this very moment is dealing
with up to 12,000 rows inserted every second into a single table.. after which that table
(an hour later containing around 40 million rows) is processed. You want me to believe
that an Open Source database can do the same? Then you will need to prove that cause
I don't think for a single moment that Open Source databases like mySQL, PostgreSQL
and Firebird are anywhere as capable and able as Oracle. Also, take a look at VoltDB - an Open Source high-performance database from
Michael Stonebraker - SQL and ACID in a novel new design.
There are "Lies, damned lies, statistics" and then* there are database benchmarks.
How big are your rows? I'm running Hammerora at the moment against an Oracle 10
XE instance and I'm getting Y no. of rows (I don't think that I'm allowed release any benchmarking
that I do "into the wild") inserted/second - how meaningful is that? What is the disk setup?
[url http://www.ib-aid.com/articles/item104]See here you have a very thorough
benchmark with inserts of 24K rows/sec into a Firebird database.
Table 3: Loading operations Description Value Time to load
~70 hours
Total records inserted
6.2 billions
Average insertion speed
24500 records/second
Average record size
146 bytes (min 13 bytes, max – 600 bytes)
Transactions
646489I don't want to get into a religious war here ;) - particularly since this forum is hosted by
Oracle - I was just trying to explain to the OP why certain customers aren't interested in
the latest "bells and whistles" version of Oracle - 1 reason is that powerful software
is available for free elsewhere - although in terms of features, Oracle does have
the honour of the "kitchen-sink" implementation with a rich feature-set.

  • Can I still use old versions of itunes producer

    Hi.
I recently purchased a mac mini (circa 2007) for the sole purpose of uploading epub files I already have to the iBook store.  I'm using os 10.6.8 with an intel processor and ram and processor speed in excess of what Apple lists as minimum requirements.  However when I download itunes producer 2.9 I get an error message that my machine won't support the program.
I've found a website where I can download older versions of itunes producer --  can I use, for example, vers. 2.2 of producer to still upload content?
I'm a long-time windows guy and brand new to the world of mac.
    Thanks

Like Windoze,  older  equipment is not able to deal with  updates intended  for "newer" equipment.
The answer is, if  you can find older software it may be OK.
I suggest you look at the  top of this page > Apple Support Compunities, and  scroll down to find the Mac Mini discussion group.

i seatch for such database file in oracle ? And why would you expect Oracle to have the same file(s) as some other product?
Oracle implements it's databases with multiple data files, not just one. And that's in addition to all of the various files that make up the software, apart from any databases.
You definately do not want to put the database files under ORACLE_HOME. If you have any choice at all, I wouldn't even want them on the same partition. A default installation and db creation may try to put them there simply because that is the one directory structure oracle can count on being there. But that is one default that is far from best practice.
The minimum partition configuration I'd want for a Windows server hosting an Oracle database is ....
    c:\ - operating system only
d:\ - Oracle home, admin, and one set of all duplexed files (control, redo)
e:\ - all other database files
For the 'sandbox' setup on my personal laptop, where I only have a c: drive, I still break it out ...
    c:\oracle\app\product\10.2.0 <-- Oracle Home
    c:\ora1\mysid\ <--- some data files
    c:\ora2\mysid\ <--- some data files
    c:\ora3\mysid\ <--- some data files
Take a look at this: http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/A97297_01/appg_ofa.htm
It is out of the 9i docs, and is directed to unix, but if you will read and understand the principles it is a good guide even for Windows. You can also google "optimal flexible architecture" and get lot's of other docs.
I dare say that at this point It would be a good investment in your career to go to tahiti.oracle.com. Drill down to your product and version. There you will find the complete doc library.
You should spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there. Learning where to look things up in the documentation is time well spent on your career.
Read the 2-Day DBA manual cover to cover.
Notice the 'search' function at that site.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
    - Look in your alert log and find all the non-default initialization parms listed at instance startup. Then read up on each one of them in the Reference Manual. Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files, then look up what you see there in the network administrators manual.

  • Downloaded latest VLC Web Plugin ver but Firefox still show old version

Downloaded VLC Web Plugin Version 2.0.5.0 and rebooted and restarted Firefox.
Firefox Plug Ins still shows old version 2.0.2.0.
When I check Firefox for latest version is says 2.0.2.0 is the latest and I'm up to date.
When I open VLC as a standalone it comes up as version 2.0.5.0.
Why is Firefox not incorporating the correct version?

Try to delete the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox Profile Folder and maybe addons.sqlite as well to reset the plugin registry databases.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Trying to update Firefox: download latest version, follow directions to install, when restart still have old version

Trying to update Firefox from 3.6.22 to 6.0.2
I download latest version, follow directions to install (move to app folder, drag to dock) but the old version in the dock is what opens.
So I removed old version from dock, put new version in, and restarted computer for good measure.
But when I restart still have old version...
How do I get the newest version of Firefox to be the one my computer uses?
Have tried to download and install several times over several months without success...

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Is it legal to request old versions of Oracle software?

    Hi all,
I recently purchased Steve Adams' book Oracle 8i Internal Services.
On the authors website (www.ixora.com.au/scripts) there are scripts which are to be run
    in conjunction with the text.
I have done this with 10 XE but it doesn't appear to work so well. On the database
forum I requested (for the princely sum of €5 (for postage and trouble - not for the
product itself)) that I be sent a CD if some kind soul had one lying around.
I was then informed that this was illegal - I did put "as long as it's legal and above board
and all that" in my original request.
I wish to emphasise that I am doing this to learn - I am not trying to do anything illegal and/or
that would be a breach of Oracle's software licencing terms.
Can any learned person clarifiy if it is acceptable to obtain old versions of Oracle's software
    in this manner?
    TIA and rgs,

I also believe it is illegal and you have to get the software directly from Oracle or from an Oracle Partner -- You could contact your Oracle Sales representative to confirm.
If you have an access to My Oracle Support (MOS) website and a valid CSI number, you could try to log a SR and ask Oracle Support the Media Pack (though I believe you will be requested to use another version since Oracle8i is no longer supported).

    Hello farahani hairon nizar,
If your Apple ID was changed from your old account, you may have to change it back to your old account to be able to sign out and then change it back after that is done. Take a look at the article below for more information.
If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud

  • Have updated email add now passwords don't work and old email is still displayed so created new apple ID and password ,now app store still using old email /password .wat to do now

Have updated apple I D  and password
Now appstores still using old apple Id and password
    Cannot update or download apps
Created new apple I d and password and now still iTunes using old id and old password doesn't work
    Bbaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

    Hi Mofomon,
If you want to use the new/updated AppleID and password, you need to sign out of the App Store, sign out of iTunes, etc. and then sign back on with the new ID and password.
To sign out of the App Store on your iPad, go to Settings>iTunes & App Store, then click on your old AppleID, click on View Account, and sign in with your old password that goes with that ID. Then click on Sign Out. Once you have the old ID signed out, you can sign back on with the new ID and Password.
New purchases will be done with that ID, but if you actually set up a totally separate brand new ID from your old one (as opposed to simply changing it) then any past purchases will still be linked to that old ID, and will require the old password for updating.
If you simply changed your existing AppleID, then the new password will be what is needed for updating.
    Cheers,

  • Upgraded Java, CF still using older version - how?

This server is Win2008 fully patched, IIS 7.0 in good shape - CF 9.0  no patches installed - which we obviously want to fix. When we tried to install patches, we got this:
To try and resolve this, our first mistake was installing Java version 8 (1.8) - which we-now-know doesn't work with 9.0.  What I'm not following is why CF settings reports still using 1.6. From what I've read and can see in java.config, it's storing/accessing its own JRE in CF directories. 2 questions: 1) How can I access the security settings for this JRE so I can get patches installed 2) If not possible, am I right in thinking we have to uninstall 8, reinstall the server version of 6 (1.6), point CF at the server version of Java so we can change the security settings (with restarts at the proper places) so we can start getting security patches installed? Any alterations to those steps?
Once I get to patch 4 we'll be upgrading to Java 7 - does CF 9.01 fully patched work with Java 1.8? I see Java 7 is due to expire April 2015.

Coldfusion uses its own version of java by default. You can, however, change this to use the version installed on the server when you download it off of the internet. Here is a blog post about this process - How to change/upgrade JDK version of ColdFusion server — Adobe ColdFusion Blog.
Note as well just because a new version of Java is installed doesnt mean that the old version is gone. Major java revisions dont upgrade, like .NET it just installs the different version. Sometimes when you install Java 7 or 8 it will leave the old legacy versions which the browser will still try and use. Usually, after the Java install is done, it asks if you want to remove the outdated versions. You can use the official Java uninstall tool to scan for old versions and remove them for you - Java Uninstall Tool
Coldfusion 9 wont support anything higher then Java 7. Java 8 has only just been made available to the most recent version of Coldfusion in the last 6 months or so. Like Java 7 soon, Coldfusion 9 is end of life and support for it stopped last year.
Finally, you don't need Java to update CF9. Java is used for the browse dialogues to find the files. If you have already downloaded the hotfix jars, just copy and paste the path & file name in to the Update File box and click Submit Changes. This will do the same thing and install the hotfix.

  • Using old version of InDesign for upgrade

Hi. I have an old, never-opened retail copy of InDesign 2.0 that I bought with a new Mac some years ago. The white tape seal on the top of the jewel case is still unbroken.  I'm semi-retired and don't do any layout or graphics work, but I have one project that was created for me years ago using Indesign that I would like to be able to update myself.  I would like to be able to upgrade to a later version of InDesign, but not to the current one--probably to version 3 or 4. One reason is I think the file I will be using is in 3; the other reason is I am still running OS 10.6.8 on my Mac. Can I install this software now on my Mac?  Will its serial number work to authorize an upgrade version on installation?  What can I do?  Many thanks

Thank you, Bob.  Just finished a verrryyy lengthy chat with a nice Adobe rep, who gave me some slightly different info, and, sadly, about the same conclusion.
    I was told I can't install the ID 2.0 on anything past a G5.
I might qualify for an upgrade to CS4 (ID 6.0) but I'd need help from Adobe for the authorization. However, that supposedly runs on OS 10.4.11–10.5.4 only.
He said I can't use CS 6 because it requires OS 10.7 and up.  So I could take a chance on CS 4 and if that didn't work, give up and swear off Adobe.  (I was raised on Quark)  Or look for a later full version of Indesign -- if that was ever even offered.
As far as finding old software, I'm sitting with an unopened retail copy that's 7 years old.  If it were still usefiul, I believe it would be legal to re-sell.
I've had success buying authentic old stock software more than once.  I ask for pictures of holograms, etc.  (I'm still using Appleworks and until I couldn't run system 9, i wouldn't give up Claris Emailer).
Thanks very much for the advice!
