Why Such a Huge Photoshop File Size Increase When Saving In CC from other versions?

Hello,
I have limited experience in Photoshop, and am working with a file with two other people. We are creating web comic pages. The line artist and colorist are both using CS 6. I have CC. The file I receive from them is around 238MB. If I open it and make even the slightest edit, Photoshop will not save it as it warns that the file size is too large (greater than 2GB!). How does this happen? Is it something in my preferences that causes 10x increase in file size?

Why is the file size increasing when cropping in Photoshop CC?

While cropping a picture the file size is increasing dramatically.
An image 7360 X 4912 px (Image size : 103,4M) after cropping to 60 X 40 cm 300 px, goes up to an image of 18000 X 12000 px (Image size : 618,0 M). And the computer is unable to cope with such a file...
It wasn't like that when I first started to use the program.
I crop the same image using CS5 and the result is an image of 7087 X 4724 px (Image size : 95,8 M) which is normal...

Why is image file size increasing when changed to CMYK?

When converting the colour of a Jpeg to CMYK in Photoshop CS5 the file size is increasing.
The original image is 352KB and after saving as CMYK it is 2.1MB
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?
I'm using a lot of images for a print project so need to keep file sizes small with resolution of 300dpi. The image dimensions are really small, only about 30mm high so they shouldn't be this large a file size
I am using a clipping path but this doesn't seem to be effecting file size (I checked by saving it as RGB with a clipping path which stayed small, and by saving one without a clipping path in CMYK which was huge)

Two things may be happening:
1)      you may be making the file pixel dimensions (width and height) larger due to the 300 dpi requirement.
2)      CMYK files, with 4 colors per pixel, are expected to be larger than JPG files, which are 3 colors per pixel and the data is compressed in a way that throws away information.
You will not get CMYK files anywhere near as small as JPG files, as you are finding.   If there are compression options available when you save the file, perhaps those can make the files smaller.
What pixel dimensions is the original JPG and what pixel dimensions are the CYMK files?

The FIle Size increase when I transfered to another external...why?

I just bought a new external hard drive to replace my old external. After copying all my folders and what not to the new hard drive, i noticed that some of the file sizes weren't the same as before. Yet everything looks like it copied correctly.
Example:
Video folder on old HD = 5.6 GB
Video folder on new HD = 10 GB
Is there a logical reason for this and should I be concerned?

I believe that your issue is because the block (cluster) size on the disks is vastly different. Blocks are essentially the smallest amount of disk space that can be allocated to hold a file and a file takes up a least one block. If the file is bigger than the block size by even a single byte, it spills over and occupies a second block, even if it doesn't use the full second block. Thus, you get wasted space when the file size isn't exactly the same as a multiple of the block size.
For a FAT32 formatted disc, your default block/cluster size is either 16KB or 32KB, but for Mac OS Extended, it's 4KB. So, you're going to waste quite a bit more space on the FAT32 drive because its default cluster size is quite a bit larger than the equivalent on Mac OS Extended.

Pdf file size increases when printing resulting in slow print speed.

I have a .pdf that is saved at 27MB. When I send it to an HP Designjet T520 36in printer the file size jumps up to 136MB and the printing is incredibly slow. This does not happen on all files on a few random ones. Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

It's entirely normal for file size to increase. PDFs are much more compressed than print streams. For some printers the print size is almost constant (a huge bitmap), for others, it's a collection of graphical items and the size varies enormously. Rarely anything you can do.

PDF file size increases when I add a Email Submit button

Hello,
My PDF form is 87KB. Once I add a Email submit button the file size jumps to 525KB. Why?
Reason this confuses me is that it seems to be inconsistent. I have added this function to other PDF forms and the file size only increased a few KB. Every now & then adding a button or Javascript will increase the file size.
I have retraced my steps over & over, but I cannot find a answer to why this is happening.

The problem is the font. Use Helvetica instead. When you do, Acrobat/Reader actually use a version of Arial anyway.
When you use one of the non-base-14 fonts (Helvetica, Times, Courier, [and their bold, italic, bold italic variants] Symbol, and Zafp Dingbats) for a form field, Acrobat has to embed the entire font in the file, and some can be rather large. The base-14 fonts are guaranteed to be available for use by the compliant PDF viewer, so there is not need to embed them in the file. A viewer is allowed to substitute suitable replacement fonts, which is what Acrobat/Reader now do.
The problem is you can't simply go back and change the font to Helvetica and see the full size reduction that you'd expect after you do a Save As. This is because Acrobat does not clean up everything as well as you might expect. So what you have to do is go back to a version of the form that does not have the button, or copy & paste the field from the old form to a new PDF that doesn't have any fields, but delete the button first. Then create the button anew.

File size increases when I export from iphoto

I was hoping someone could help me. When I export an event from iphoto it increases in size and is now too big for my dvd. In iphoto, the size is 5.9 GB, but then when I export (settings as follows: JPEG - Max. - Full Size ) the file is too big to burn on my DVD-RDL (8.5GB)
It goes from 5.9 to 10.48 GB.
Any thoughts?

Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
I'm Serious about Back Ups. And you should be too.
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

Large file size increase when editing in PS3

I shoot mostly JPG with most file sizes in the 5MB range. Today I sent 3 files to PS3 for auto alignment and blending to a panorama. When complete, the resulting PSD file back in my Lightroom library is 495MB. When I export the PSD panorama as a JPG for printing a 9" x 36" with 180 dpi the resulting JPG is only 6.1MB. I imported the 6.1MB JPG panorama back into Lightroom for comparison with the 495MB PSD file and they look nearly identical even at 100%. Will someone please explain to me what is happening to cause these remarkable file size changes ? Any reason other than the time it takes not to replace the PSD file in my library with the smaller JPG when finished with the process ?

jpeg is a lossy compression that uses an algorithm based on human vision research that gets rid of information in the file that we cannot generally really see and compresses color ranges that we are less likely to see changes in (typically reds) more than colors our eyes are very sensitive to (yelow and green). At least when you use a high quality setting. PSD on the other hand, uses a lossless compression algorithm that retains ALL information in an image regardless of whether you should be able to see it or not. Now sometimes you might want to do an edit that for example lifts up shadows. If you started with a jpeg, that information might already be gone, but when you saved as a psd, you might be able to retrieve it as the compression algorithm did not already throw away the information. Another example is subtle gradients in certain colors, such as blues or reds. Say you want to make the color more saturated. You're likely to start seeing banding with the jpeg, while you'll probably get good results with a losslessly compressed file.
Lastly, the psds Lightroom writes are typically 16 bits, which means again more precision. They can also contain layers such as adjustment layers, which allows you to later go back on your edits. Jpeg cannot do any of these things. It might be alright to store a finalized file as jpeg, but be aware that you'll be limited to what you can do with them if you change your mind. Harddisk space is supercheap nowadays.

Form size increases when ADOBE Form moved from DEV to QA

Hi Gurus,
I have a large PDF ADOBE Form developed in DEV but when I moved this Form to QA environment, I noticed the file size has been Doubled(from 2MB to 4MB). Please note that, this is not an interative Form. Can someone tell me why and how can I fix it. We are emailing this form and 4MB is too large.

Well, after discussing it with SAP, we are still in the dark and don't know why this problem only occurs to one of our PDF outputs. however, the following might help you to cut some times looking for answers.
1-It started after we changed the values in the Layout properties. We are not sure in which tab. We guess it was "PREVIEW"
2-After this, every time we made any changes to the Layout, the size was doubled until it became a major problem
3-We contacted SAP for this issue and the respond was "Please refer to following note for installation/patches:
1176858 / 1356871"
4-We were also asked by ADOBE to download a zip file called "COMMON.zip" and install the COMMON file on our ADS server
5-After installing the COMMON file on our server we were asked to run the ABAP program "FP_CHK_REPORT" on the FORM.
6-The suggestion was to only check mark only common-001when running the ABAP, but we check marked all after found no results with only COMMON-001.

8-we did all of the above but we had partial success, it reduced the size fro 7MB to 4MB
9-Finally, we created the same Form from ground up without touching the Layout properties and the size turned up to be around 100KB.

File size increase when converting EOS 5d Mark II 10 Mpixel Images to DNG?

Hi,
a colleague of mine is having issues when converting 10 Mpixel RAW images of his 5d Mark II to dng format. He shot the images at a smaller size in RAW format to save memory. When he converts the RAW to DNG using lightroom 2.2 the filesize increases to 39 Mb. That's almost the size of a 22 Mpixel RAW file and defeats the whole idea of shooting lower res.
My guess would be that the dng conversion doesnt take into account that the actual pixel count is lower than the full sensor res and somehow saves redundand data for the missing "sensor pixels". The dng is still 10 Mpixel large btw.
Can anyone else confirm this? Looks like a bug to me if that's the case.

What settings is he using in the conversion? He should NOT check the linearization option and the option to include the original RAW. He should have lossless compression checked. Just use the defaults which does those things. A 12-bit 22 Mpixel dng file should be about 22 MB, not 39. I don't have any experience with sRAW though and I don't know how those are converted to dng.

Why do my photo file size increases upon export?!?!

This is driving me nuts. I have Aperture 1.5.2 referencing an iPhoto library. When I look at the metadata toolset I can see each photo's file size. I have all my photos already resized to fit in an 800x800px box. When I export through Aperture using "export version jpeg original" I get an increased file size. When I export using the master version I don't. I went through and added iptc caption data that only seems to export with the version not the master. I can't believe a line of txt adds so noticeably to the file size. If I need to export my photos with the iptc caption data and want to retain my original file sizes how should I go about it?

it all depends on 2 factors. a - your original file (pixel dimensions, format, compression level, color and bit depth) and the exported file (pixel dimensions, format, compression level, color and bit depth).
just as an example - if you take a quite strongly compressed jpg (lets say at 5) and export it to be a less compressed jpg (10 to 12), the file size in kb will be larger, while maintaining the same amount of pixels. what has changed is the way the information are stored within the jpg +(to say it very simplified and without going into details about compression and possible loss of data etc)+.
if you'd take a high-res 16-bit tif and export it (again at exact same pixel dimensions) as jpg, you'd get a much smaller file, still the same pixels (at least the amount of pixels, however perhaps "lower quality" pixels, depending on compression level, original image, noise, tonality etc etc).
long (technical) story short: there is no real "one answer fits all" because it heavily depends on your original image. as a rule of thumb however, print files should be in 300 dpi and images for the web in 72.
in terms of color and bit depth it now depends who you're sending the files to. if you send them to your client, use 8 bit sRGB. if you send it to a graphic designer, i'd send him 16-bit tif files in adobe rgb. all of this makes no sense if your original image was a heavily compressed 8 bit sRGB jpg of course.

File sizes increase in StarOffice 8

I've got a letter I send out about once a month, just changing dates in the contents for each edition. It has a linked .jpg file as background.
In StarOffice 7 the .sxw file size is 8 Kb.
In StarOffice 8 the size has leapt to 44 Kb, whether I save it in .sxw or .odt format.
Why?

I find that file sizes increase both with text documents and with spreadsheets, sometimes by a great deal. One of the reasons I switched from 5.2 to 7 was the much smaller file sizes, since I keep my weekly back-ups on floppies (and am a stingy sort of fellow generally). But I had to run 7 and 5.2 together, since 7 does not handle Sanskrit/Hindi founts (the SO "help" team just asked a whole lot of questions and then disappeared). So now I have (on Windows) 5.2, 7 and 8. I have still not checked if 8 handles these founts. If it does, I can remove 5.2. For the rest, 8 does not seem to offer any advantage over 7 -- not counting the data base, which I have still to look into. File size, in my view, goes against it.

Folio article file size increases massively with more buttons

we are about to finish up a DPS project and now have some serious problems with the folio sizes.
We did all the usual things to make folios smaller (cropped every image to the trimmed size, pdf articles, vektor overlays etc.)
So we made some tests and discovered a really strange behavior:
We have one single article with a fullscreen MSO containing 7 picture status, and seven buttons (with the same pictures as thumbnails) that lead to the appropriate statuses.
First we tried to experiment deleting images from the MSO but this had no effect on the file size. But as we deleted the seven buttons the file size changed from 10MB to 52MB!
The size of all the assets (images and ID file) from this article is only 12 MB.
Is this a known bug? Is there a way around it? It is some kind of crazy when an uploaded folio has 4 times the size as all his assets?!?!

sorry for my late reply.
I have done some additional testing and came to the conclusion that no button is responsible for the big file sizes.
It was the overlay setting after all (sorry for pointing in the wrong direction). As I switched the slideshow from "Raster" to "Vector" the file size decreased plenty. (I thougt I checked this but actually I did it only in vertical articles.)
However I did not know that the export format has such an impact on file size. This one article decreased from 52 MB to 17 MB. And it was only one slideshow with 7 (retina) images inside.
Changing all the slideshows in our 50 article folio (about 35) decreased the file size from 576 MB to 243 MB!

Why does PDF file size increase each time I "save" tagging tasks?
Given:
1) I'm running Acrobat Pro 11.0.07 (this is most current version)
2) My file size starts at 750mb and ends up 15mb when finished tagging.
3) Only certain documents experience this increase, i.e., no visible pattern of document characteristics
4) PDF's are not full of images...in fact, mostly <H1> <H2> <H3> <P> <Figure> alt text, ect.
5) Occurs with text PDF's and/or fillable forms (again, does not happen to all documents...only some)
6) File increase occurs incrementally as tagging tasks are performed; i.e., each new save increases file size a few megabytes.
7) Occurs whether I "save" or "save as"
8) Difficult to optimize these files without corruption
9) I'm running Mac OS 10.9.4 (this is most current version)

Thank you so much for responding! I've been experimenting with the SAVE AS vs. SAVE for the past few days...and you are correct. It's funny because I've been tagging files for 2 years and never noticed this. Probably b/c I use both methods depending on the tagging tasks...some are more complicated than others and should not be overwritten. In those cases I SAVE AS new file.

File Size Reduction When Editing in Photoshop

When using Smart Objects my DNG file sizes increase from 9mb to over 100mb after a few adjustments.
I found that I can reduce the file size greatly, for example back to 9mb, by reducing the Image Size to, for example 300 x 400 pixels, without flattening.
Then I can save the file. The next time I want to work on it, I can open it, change the image size back to the original, for example, 2592 x 3872, and have all of my adjustments and filters available to make further changes.
Although, I cannot see any difference in quality, I am new to this, and I am concerned that I am not skilled enough to see the difference.
It would be very beneficial to store 9mb files instead of 100mb files and still have the same quality available, when needed.
Please tell me if I am missing something here.

With your guidance, I did an experiment. I made a Curves Layer and painted on the mask to reveal the adjustment. I then changed the file sizes as shown in the table, saved the file, re-opened it, and then re-sized it. (Image Size in pixels; File Size in megabytes). The comments under image refer to the painted area of the layer mask. As you indicated, I did not observe any degradation outside the painted area of the layer mask.
