Why the different Kernel version?

While I am trying to figure out why my G4 X Serve cannot connect to the Intel X Server as an OD Replica, I noticed although the two are running the exact same version (10.5.4-build 9E17) of software, the Kernel versions are different: G4 - Darwin 9.4, Intel - Darwin 9.0.
Is this normal? And if it isn't, how to correct this? Thanks for any tips.

Well I guess you could use chgrp on a symlink, but only to protect the symlink itself which is pointless here as it's root:root anyway, and why wouldn't you just use root:root on symlinks you don't want users to tamper with?  If you do manage to think of an occasion where you need to change the ownership of symlinks you could use chgrp...
EDIT/ Doh even that is useless as you can't really protect symlinks as AFAIK permission will be set by parent directory...
Also, if the /dev/cdrom symlink did manage to disappear it would just be recreated on the next boot by systemd/udev!

  • Why the different app versions?

I now have an iMac, an iPhone4 and an iPad2. I would really like the iphones weather app. and the iMacs FlightRadar24 app on my iPad. Would this be possible? I am disappointed with the available versions for the iPad.

The reason the different apps don't run on other platforms is they are dependent on the OS for which they were written and compiled for.  It's directly analogous to why a Windows executable file cannot execute on a Mac running OS X.  Different operating systems mean the app needs to be re-compiled and/or significantly re-written in order to work on the alternate operating system.
Developers develop their apps as they see fit to do so and are under no obligation to go the time and effort to make their app cross platform (and note for many things, that would be a huge investment of their time and effort too).  Note that it took Apple years to port their iWorks application to the mobile versions - such things are not trivial and not done quickly.  And there has to be enough potential interest in the alternate platform  version to make it worthwhile.
So, your disappointment aside, there are lots of very valid reasons why an app from one device&platform does not run on another.

  • What is the latest kernel version for OL6

    Hi,
After a yum update, this is what I got:
    2.6.32-300.39.1.el6uek.x86_64
I am using a SSD and it seems (based on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM) that
support for ATA TRIM was added in 2.6.33.
My question is what is the latest kernel version for OL6?
    Thanks,
    Zhe

You will need to modify your ULN channel subscription or which channels are enabled from public-yum.oracle.com to install this kernel.

  • Cloning use the different gcc version between source system and target sys

    Hi All,
Our system is: Application tier and Database tier is split to two servers.
We should run a cloning, but I found the different gcc version on application tier on source system and target system.
The source application tier server is RedHat Linux ES3, gcc version is 3.2.3
The target application tier server is RedHat Linux ES3, gcc version is 2.9.6
There is the same gcc version on database tier on source system and target system, they are gcc 2.9.6.
My question: Can I use the different gcc version between source system and target system when I run an erp cloning?
    Thanks & Regards
    Owen

Not necessarily, you might get some errors if the version is higher and it is not supported by the OS. An example is Note: 392311.1 - usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/3.4.5/libgcc_s.so: undefined reference to 'dl_iterate_phdr@GLIBC_2.2.4'
To be on the safe side, make sure you have the same version (unless you want to give it a try).

  • Why the new firefox version 31.0 is getting stuck when something is downloaded.

Why the new firefox version 31.0 is getting stuck when something is downloaded. After force restart also same issue (still the download status is showing the same and again getting stuck) for 4-5 times and then it asks for to clear all the data. After that it is working fine. Again If I download something facing the same issue. Its really irritating. I am using windows7.

    '''[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode]''' {web link}
    While you are in safe mode;
Press the '''Alt''' or '''F10''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Followed by;
    Windows; '''Tools > Options'''
    Linux; '''Edit > Preferences'''
    Mac; ''application name'' '''> Preferences'''
    Then '''Advanced > General.'''
Look for and turn off '''Use Hardware Acceleration'''.
Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?
    Then restart.

  • System won't boot - different kernel versions

    Hello everyone,
I have just made full system upgrade and Icant bool the system -> can't mount /boot/efi because vfat filesystem is not known.
I am using grub, I fixed it but the problem remains.
I have found out that output of 'uname -r'  shows kernel version: 3.17.3-1-ARCH and 'pacman -Q | grep linux' shows linux 3.18.2-2. What should I do to load 3.18.2-2?
I think that it is "the root" of my problem, isn't it? Can you help me please?

    Have you rebooted?
If you still cannot boot (your post is a little unclear on this), use (arch-)chroot from the live .iso and post the output of:
    # parted -l
    lsblk -f
Yes, reboot didn't help. Gonna chroot the system.

  • I am doing browser testing for the different firefox versions. Shall I use only the latest version to cover the lower versions?

I heard that if i test using the latest firefox version which is 32, it would be sufficient and I do not need to test the older versions e.g., 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31.
    Is that a correct assumption?

You may want to test with the Firefox 24 ESR and Firefox 31 ESR version as those are still supported with security updates.
    Firefox 24.8.0 and 31.1.0 ESR:

  • Why the Different Prices?

I am not sure where to post this, but I have a concern. I went to an Apple demo last week and asked the folks there, but they did not know.
Here goes: I qualify for educational discounts. I will be buying the new 24" iMac with an ATI GPU. I was looking at the prices for Aperture, Logic Express, and Final Cut Express...with the iMac they are discounted to $179 each. BUT, with the 17" MacBook Pro all of the above apps list for $69 each.
Is this a typo, or is there some rational behind it?
    Thanks.

I have Logic Studio 8 and Final Cut, but don't have Aperture and I was thinking of getting it. Not being a laptop sort of guy, I am going with the new 24" iMac with the ATI gpu...I seriously mulled over getting the 17" MBP, but finally concluded that it would rarely leave the house or its primary location. The money I save is going to be used for a RME Fireface 400.
Apple provides great educational discounts on software, but I am confused why they would offer educational discounts on one product but not the others? At these prices...the cheap one...I can just go out and buy the newest version when it comes out, probably cheaper than the price of an upgrade.

  • Why the firefox android version is not working with lowend models

    galaxy pocket version 2.3.6
pls fix the problem and get compactabile with lowend models

That link^ is a bit outdated as [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/17.0/releasenotes/ mobile Firefox supports ARMv6 as of Firefox 17.0] and for [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/19.0/releasenotes/ mobile Firefox 19.0 the requirement for cpu was reduced from 800MHz to 600MHz]. It is also recommended for the device to have 512+MB RAM at minimum still.

  • Why the different file sizes?

Can anyone tell me why some songs are in the 20-30MB range, and most are only 3 or 4MB range? And more importantly, is there any way to shrink down the big ones? They make the CDs I burn very short indeed.

The file size of your imported songs will depend on your import settings in iTunes. An individual file size of 20-30mb sounds like you are importing in WAV or Apple Lossless. mp3 or AAC will have the same file size when using the same bitrate. For example, the average 4 minute song imported in AAC @ 128 kbps will have a file size of 3-4mb.

  • Different kernel version between systems

    Hallo.
We have a three systems landscape ECC 7.00 kernel 7.00
    DEV->TST->PRD
Can we upgrade SVI to kernel 7.21_EXT and stay with kernel 7.00 on TES and PRO without problems about transport of object from development to the other systems ?
    Thanks a lot.
    Mario

I recently worked on a project where we had Kernel 700 and we moved to 720.
We actually did have some issues. When upgrading the kernel and later running SGEN, issues arrised.
I can't remember exactly but, Kernel 720 and newer is built much more granular in terms of DDIC checks. So there is an OSS note you need to apply.
Look at this note 1610716 and 1636252. 1610716 did resolve some a ABAP dump I had

  • How to know which version of SQLite is used by the different AIR-Versions?

For AIR 1.0 and 2.0 this post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2577582#2577582 has the infos, but it is not clear where they come from.
How could one find out about the SQLite-versions in 2.5 and 2.6?
(not even google or any doc that I read about AIR and SQLite mention this)
thx in adance for any hint or answer,
    karfau

    Thanks for this info.
Maybe the current version of things like webkit and sqlite could be attached to some readme-like-file in the releases in the future.
Since u answered I would like to use the chance to ask another question:
When reading the SQLite-Docs there are some features, that state:
"available when compiled with the compiler option SQLITE_XYZ"
It would be intresting to know with which compiler options (a list is here: http://www.sqlite.org/compile.html )
the AIR-version has been compiled.(Especially those, that can not be guessed by reading the docs )
Is there any way to find out?

  • Why the different notes?

I hope some one can help me with this? When I connect my keyboard and Yamaha DD-55c to my Mac I get a sound, which is the good thing. The bad thing is I get a number of notes on one key or drum pad. How can I fix this. Any help is welcome.

Try making a blank project with no settings at all and just add a bass from whatever plugin. Make sure there are no plugins at all on the track (not just muted but removed). Then try again.
I believe palying on the pianoroll with the mouse plays at 127 velocity but I ain´t sure. How about the output? Does it clip/go red? Then it will disort.

  • Why does external modules not depend on a specific kernel version ?

    Hi,
I'm quite new to Archlinux and there are a few things I don't understand about the way pacman handles kernel and modules packages.
I understand that modules in the repository are only build against the current kernel version and that you should update both at the same time to keep your system in a working state, however I don't understand why the package system does not enforce that.
For example if I look at the current nvidia modules (100.14.19-3), it will install its stuff in lib/modules/2.6.23-ARCH and hence (should) depends on kernel26>=2.6.23.
However if I take a look at the package itself, it only depends on kernel26.
If I upgrade the modules without upgrading the kernel or upgrade the kernel without upgrading the modules, I will break my system.
In my opinion (but I may be missing something) the package manager should be robust and should make sure your system stay in a coherent state.
Is there a technical reason for this or is this only to avoid having to modify the packages dependencies each time a new kernel is release ?

Very interesting, I was right when I said I was probably missing something
As I said in my first post, I'm a new archlinux user. I'm more familiar with debian/ubuntu systems.
The way they are solving this kind of issue is simply by putting the kernel version number in the package name.
For example you have nvidia-kernel-2.6.23-1 which depends on linux-image-2.6.23-1.
This solves these kind of upgrade issues (I did a search in the forums before creating this thread and I saw there were a hell lot of kernel/modules dependency issues that have already been reported by other users).
The advantage of this system is that you can keep both the old and the new kernel package on your system at the same time are revert to the previous version if something goes wrong.
However the drawback is that you have to maintain several versions of the same package in the repository at the same time, which may be contrary to the archlinux philosophy...
