Why the slow searching in iTunes 5?

I was wondering if anybody else noticed the big increase in search time after the iTunes 5 update. I have a library of 10,000 tracks which I used to be able to search instantly (as I type). Now, there seems to be a BIG delay when I'm typing. I mean, I can type a song title like "We Belong Together (Remix)" and it slowly types it out while it searches for like 10 seconds or so. I'm running a new PowerBook 15" 1.5ghz at highest processor performance, it really shouldn't take so long.
I was just wondering if other users with large libraries are experiencing the same problem. If so, is there any way to correct this issue that you've found? Thanks!

Hello:
Yes, I have this same problem. What's the deal? It's is quite annoying. I don't have a fix or haven't called Apple yet. Have you discovered anything?
Thanks.

What happened to the power search in itunes?

Why? Indeed, is a very good question. Why take the most useful tool for finding music and bury it (in the case of version 10) or eliminate it (if you upgrade to version 11).   I think ignorance is too generous an answer to this question.
Rather, I believe this is a cynical marketing ploy to steer you into buying WHAT THEY SUGGEST, instead of WHAT YOU REALLY WANT.  Most vendors would be content to just advertise their suggestions, which you can pass by if you really know what you want. But for I-Tunes to willfully take away your ability to go directly to what you want is a sad insult to the buying public.
Also, they probably feel that power search is too effective in revealing what I-Tunes DOESN'T have available.
By all means, follow the advice given above - provide I-Tunes with the feedback that is sorely due.

Why the new version of iTunes don't have phot features? How can I sync my photo from my pc to Ipad2?

Every version of iTunes that supports syncing with an iPhone has the ability to sync pictures to the device.
Resize the iTunes windowso that you can see the entire window.

  • Where is the advanced search in iTunes 11

Under the Store menu bar item, there used to be a search option. This search allowed me to do an advanced type search with specific criteria. What are the new search tools, just spotlight and categories?

Thanks Chris for your answer, but what I need is the advanced search that let me, for instance, find all movies with subtitles, in all the last versions of iTunes could be possible,
This was never possible with previous versions of iTunes and I have not heard of this in iTunes 11.

  • Apple TV (2nd Generation) -- Why the slow rentals?  WHY?!?

Why does the current version of Apple TV not work? Why will it stream Netflix, YouTube, and AirPlay items with no problem and yet chokes on iTunes rentals? Why was it marketed to stream rentals? Why is it still Apple’s hobby and not a full-fledged device that, well let’s see… does what the <BAD WORD> it’s supposed to?
What follows below is a transcript of my experiences after receiving three rental credits because I made the mistake of renting “Elf” in HD for a group of kids and the Apple TV sputtered and stopped playing the video and then told me that said video would be ready to play in 3 hours which prompted me to lodge a complaint with customer support which had no explanation and provided me three credits for my problem <INTENTIONALLY LONG SENTENCE, BUT STILL MUCH SHORTER THAN THE TIME IT TAKES FOR APPLE TV TO LOAD A RENTAL>.
Rental credit 1 of 3. Used it to rent a movie.
 Connection: Apple TV via WIFI to Airport Extreme (latest model – 802.11n / 5GHz) to internet connection with 15Mbps download speed.
 Result: Pressed play, got loading circle, then message indicating movie would be ready to watch in 2h 40m. Then 3h 2m. Then 2h 35m. Then 2h 56m.
 Overall Experience: Horrendous. <VULGAR WORD> infuriating. Since I pressed play, the 24h window commenced and I wasn’t able to watch the movie the next evening.
 Final Outcome: Rental credit 1 of 3 used to watch nothing. Zero. Zip. 24h window expired with no viewing of film.
    One week later…
Rental credit 2 of 3. Used it to rent the same movie above trying a different configuration.
 Pre-Rental: Performed hard reset of Apple TV and ensured latest version of software was loaded. Checked all connections.
 Connection: Apple TV via ETHERNET CABLE to Extreme to internet connection with 15Mbps download speed.
 Result: Pressed play, got loading circle, then message indicating movie would be ready to watch in 1h 40m. Then 2h 2m. Then 1h 16m. Then 1h 27m. Ran internet speed test on MacBook. Speed clocked at 14.27Mbps download and 3.39MBps upload.
     Overall Experience: <EXPLETIVE> horrendous. Double <PROFANITY> infuriating. Since I <BEGINS WITH F> pressed <FOUR LETTER BAD WORD> play, the <MOTHER WHO?> 24h window commenced and we weren’t able to watch <ANOTHER WORD FOR #2>. Check that… Couldn’t even watch <ANOTHER WORD FOR #2>. <RHYMES WITH DUCK>!
 Final Outcome: Rental credit 2 of 3 used to watch nothing. Zero. Zip. 24h window expired with no viewing of film.
Pop quiz… What should I do with rental credit 3?

ATV2 works just fine with iTunes rentals, as long as your internet is reasonably fast. So help us help you -- what sort of speeds are you getting from your ISP? Not what it's rated at, what is your measured speed (use something like speedtest.net).
As far as why Netflix, YouTube, and Airplay can work fine, YouTube is not high resolution so you generally wouldn't have a problem unless your internet is very slow. AirPlay doesn't even use the internet, so that's a non-issue here.
Netflix's streaming technology is different from iTunes -- Netflix will slightly downgrade the video quality if the bandwidth is not good enough. But rentals from iTunes are queued up in your ATV2 with what it estimates is sufficient buffer to not run into problems with a slow network, but if the network is so slow that the buffer isn't big enough you'll have problems, particularly with HD rentals. Also, note that not much Netflix content is HD, so that can be another reason for the difference.

  • Where's the Power Search in iTunes 11?

You used to be able to search by Category, Title, Name, Description, etc., now, it's a cluster.  Steve Jobs, we miss you, your user-friendly interface people have no clue!!!!

I just want to insert my 2 cents about the various comments lamenting the absence of Jobs.
Jobs was certainly a very talented and unique guy that clearly had golden instincts for marketing and product design. Nevertheless, Apple is still populated with a lot of exceptionally talented people and I think it would be naive to think Apple does anything, no matter how seemingly trivial, without having specific, calculated, self serving, reasons. I certainly do not know what their logic was but I am sure the lack of a simple refresh function, the deletion of power search, the removal of the API that rendered ITLU inoperable, the changes associated with the user interface, etc. all were with focused specific purposes. I strongly suspect that the overall purpose is, in one way or another, to severly limit the ability of users to readily transfer and/or manage their own music files and, by doing so, satisfy the paranoid needs of the music publishers relative to piracy etc. concerns.
I do not think anything would be different in this regard if Jobs still had his hands on the reins of Apple. Although I recognize and respect Apples need to protect the music and maintain reasonable contracts with the music publishers, these restrictions and limitations are seriously negating the value of their otherwise outstanding hardware. As a consumer, I want to be done with Apple because it is just too difficult to manage my music as I want to manage and store it. My wife and I just want to be able to reasonably easily use the music we perceive we own (we already paid for it via iTunes or CD purcahses).
Between our existing iPhones and iPods we will be stuck with Apple for sometime to come but my wife and I are certainly going to look hard at other hardware for all future purchases. For example, an iPhone 5 would require new cables, drop in charging stations, etc. so there really is no compelling reason to stay with the iPhone when we upgrade our current 4s devices. In fact, since the Andoid based devices use Apps that are not as tightly controlled as the Apps from Apple, there is probably a good reason, aside from anything else, to finally divorce ourselves from Apple.

  • Why has my search on itunes stopped working

has anyone experienced their search facility not working properly since recently updating itunes to 11.1

I found this too and luckily fouind this thread:

Worked for me and also restored the search to be more like previous versions, before they made the search less useful.

  • Why the slow network copy (USB Ethernet 7-10Mbps)?

    I have the fllowing setup:
MBA running 10.5 - USB Ethernet (100Mbps) - Netgear 1000/100 ethernet hub - 1000MBps Ethernet on Mac mini C2D running 10.5 Server. The ethernet speed between MBA and mini should be 100Mbps. There is nothing else going on on the local LAN.
I am copying a huge file (Parallels volume) with rsync via ssh from MBA to mini, On the mini it goes to a FW400 connected fast Rocstor drive.
The speed I am getting during the copy is 680kB/s, which probably translates to something like 7-10Mbps raw ethernet speed with all the package overhead.
What I am wondering is this: Why is this so slow?
Message was edited by: Gerben Wierda

I am using rsync because I am synchronizing a (say) 27GB directory with many files with another machine and I do not want to copy everything every time I want to synchronize.
I tried different forms of transport:
    - using the Finder to copy to a shared drive. This goes at a speed of 759kB/s or around 7Mbps.
    - a direct scp from the MBA to the /tmp drive of the OS X Server (so no firewire drive involved) and the speed was around 800kBps, so again around 7Mbps.
    - Using ftpd on the server:
    - A local copy on the server via the network with ftp from /tmp to /tmp ran at 21MB/s, so around 180Mbps.
    - A remote copy from MBA to /tmp on the server ran at 680kB/s or around 6Mbps.
Basically, it seems that so far whatever method I use, I can't get it above 7Mbps on a 100Mbps interface when going from MBA via ethernet to the OS X Server.

  • How can I change the slow tempo from itunes music download. (In iphone; don't own a mac)

I recently bought a soundtrack album from itunes, and when I played it, something was off. I noticed that the tempo was slightly slower. It really nags me. How can I fix this in the iphone??? Thank you for your response.

When you say "remove his account", do you mean remove his Apple ID as well as all his stuff (music, movies, and whatever else is housed in iTunes)?  If so, delete all his stuff (music, etc.), have him deauthorize the computer (Store > Deauthorize This Computer), and sign out of his account (Store > Sign Out) and then sign in to yours.
If all you want to do is remove his Apple ID and not fuss with his stuff, then things get more complicated, because you do not own his stuff.

  • Why the Finder Search-Function is corrupted in Mavericks so that I cannot open any file after searching it?

Finder Search-Function is troubled / corrupted / misfunctioning
When keying in a search word the files are selected properly, yet not shown with details. Furthermore you cannot click and open any file. Also sorting is not possible.
Anyone else has such a problem and has figured out on how to resolve it?
(Spotlight works properly and is somehow a spare solution).
There seem to be many basic problems with the finder in Mavericks, this problem unfortunately has not been resolved also with the last software-release 10.9.2.
The quality strategy of Apple has to be questioned: I do not need 200 NEW functions, but I need the previous basic functions STILL working!
    Thank you!

Re: Hi! I have a problem with finder
01.03.2014 12:14 (in response to Fexei)
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.
Resolved the Problem! Thanks to Eric and Leonie

  • Why the sluggish performance in iTunes 8.1 OS 10.4 after adding 240 GB...

I downloaded a friends library of mp3 music and imported it to my itunes library on my lacie Quad 1TB. The new music does not have artwork or any info other than title and artist. Since then I get the color wheel upon launch (6 minutes) and every time I try to add music or edit info. A tech at the Apple store thought that my processor can't handle all the data. Is this possible, or is there something seriously wrong that could be fixed? I know my G4 is old, but all my other apps like Photoshop and Illustrator are working fine. Thanx in advance

I think it is simply the size of the library coupled with the smart playlists. If the smart playlists are set to refresh automatically then every time you do anything with iTunes it is going through and seeing how what you did affects 240GB of music. If how you operate does not frequently change the smart playlists you can go through and set them not to refresh automatically.
The above is also factored with the equipment. If somebody had your library and brand new Mac Pro it would, of course, do it all faster.
Do you have redundant smart playlists? I discovered I had a couple that I wasn't really using and I could do what they did with a simple column sort for the once or twice a year I needed them. I deleted 3 and found a noticeable increase in response.
Another thing to consider is trimming down iTunes. If I may be frank, 240 GB of music is a ridiculous amount, especially if some of that is mp3. I'd hazard to guess you could play iTunes 24/7 for a whole year and not get through it all. If you have some of it just to have it, well, maybe think about using two libraries. I am considering splitting off my classical collection from my other stuff since it is unlikely I am going to play a Beethoven symphony along with The Clash.

I am experiencing exactly the same issue. VERY slow booting, very slow shut down times and my overall performance seems to be effected. This is with an iMac (20 inch - late 2007 model) with 4GBs of RAM. I have .Mac syncing and EyeTV. Does anybody have any solutions to this issue aside from disabling .mac and EyeTV?

  • Is the slow sync to iTunes problem now fixed (iTunes 9.2.x and iOS4x)?

Several people have commented running into a problem where they found syncing their iPhone to iTunes took a very, very long time (i.e. HOURS). This happened to me as well, and thankfully I found a solution online, though painful, which did fix the problem. Essentially, one had to delete all of the 3rd-party apps off their iPhone (thus losing all data associated with those apps), do a sync, and then add them back. Some people reported the need to add the apps back one at a time, where others indicated success adding them all back at once, but still they had to add the apps -- not merely do a restore -- else the problem would return. Of course, this also meant, depending on the app, having to manually re-add all the data where possible (i.e. you lose all your high games scores, etc.). This cured the problem for me. Some people speculated that this problem is created when one purchases some apps on their computer using iTunes (then syncs them to the iPhone) AND purchases other apps directly via their iPhone. I believe I also saw someone wonder if the problem arose when one purchases apps on the computer using iTunes, but then updates them to the latest versions directly on the iPhone. Regardless, does anyone have any update on this problem? Has it "gone away" entirely with the latest iTunes and iOS? Sometimes I'm away from my computer and I see an app I'd like to buy directly from my iPhone (or update an existing one), but I'm too paranoid to do so for fear of incurring that nasty problem again.

What does " therefore theresnow way my computer regonizes" mean?
I suspect that your iPod finally died and needs replacement. The battery is dead, screen cracked and Home button broken,
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished 4G with same capacity for $199 for 64 GB one and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours.
