Why the Thinkpad Retro needs an 1:8 Screen

The title is clickbait, but this is not a troll post. Let me explain.
I think that the Thinkpad Retro would be best suited with an 1:8 screen, just not with the 1:8 screen as the only screen. The point is that there is wide demand for a 4:3 screen for the Thinkpad Retro, but it is hard to obtain 4:3 screens, 4:3 screens apparently have inherent characteristics that make them more expensive than 16:9 screens (4:3 screens require a higher salvage rate), and 4:3 screens are unsuited to widescreen media. The solution, then, is not to source a unitary 4:3 screen, but instead to source two separate screens, a 16:10 screen and a paired 2:16 (1:8) screen, which when combined creates a 4:3 unitary screen. The benefit of this is that then a 16:10 form factor can be preserved, while the additional 2:16 screen can be included a la the W700DS, but with a slightly more sophisticated form factor allowing flush alignment between the primary and second screen. The result will be increased fragility, perhaps increased weight to offset the increased fragility, as well as a visible dislocation where the 16:10 and 2:16 screens are joined, but the end result is that for normal office use, the effect of the 2:16 screen would be invisible, allowing you to retain a 4:3 screen ratio, and for widescreen media consumption, you would prefer to push down the 2:16 screen and revert to a 16:10 screen ratio anyways. The most important effect is that while you will need additional software / hardware (the screens should be joined on the hardware level) to make the screen work, you will be able to avoid the cost of custom-building a system proportioned for 4:3 operation, as well as avoid the cost of buying a custom 4:3 screen, instead only requiring the costs of a 1:8 screen, which most LCD makers might gladly sell you as scrap from conventional manufacturing.

I actually care about this more than I do about backlighting conventional keys (TBH, I prefer Chiclet because I've had way too many bad experiences cleaning out conventional keyboards). With regards to maximization, as mentioned before, it could all be handled on the hardware level; i.e, when the second monitor experiences full extension, a signal is sent to the controller to disconnect the 16:10 monitor and connect the virtual 4:3 monitor. The other part about the bezel; that's the more interesting engineering challenge. What is being sought is a bezel-less display, or a display which can have an adjacent, but bezel-less screen, latch onto it with minimal distortion. The benefit of this type of 1:8 system is that say, the Thinkpad Retro becomes available in 2016 or 2017. In 1-2 years, because the base model has high demand, an extensible monitor can be engineered for the same form factor and sharing many of  the same parts, reducing costs, making a virtually 4:3 monitor viable.

    Hi Joao,
    One possible solution is to use the silent install methods outlined in Chapter 6 of the install guide. The iSetup.EXE launcher is specifically designed for use from the CD's, since that is the most common method of distribution. However, you can also run the installation silently or semi-silently, depending on how much information you provide in the response file. The response files are organized on the first CD under the \silent\<install_type> directories.
    If you are installing the Enterprise Edition, please pay special attention to the silent install chapter, as there are several steps involved in handling the 8.0.6 RSF-based components to ensure that they are installed properly.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using Win 10 there is a need for an app to determine the full device display area and aspect ratio programitically; the dimensions are needed to create full-screen bitmap.

    While Windows.Current.Bounds returns the application windows size, in order to create a full-screen bitmap my app would need to retrieve the full display area  of the device. I cannot even get the aspect ratio.
    Pre-Win10, using Windows.Current.Bounds I can create a bitmap of whatever size application window the user is seeing. When the user is showing my app at full screen, I can therefore get the full display area and aspect ratio of the device and create a full-screen
    bitmap.
    With Win10, the user would need to know to hide the taskbar and also display at full-screen before an app can retrieve the display area and aspect ratio using Windows.Current.Bounds.
    Before Win10 it's obvious to the user that full-screen is or is not being used. When I create the bitmap, I create it to fit the application window. When the app is displayed full screen, the bitmap will be full screen. Also, the app starts full-screen so
    I can detect the display area at startup if I need to.
    With Win10, to the user the app "looks like" it is full screen with the taskbar displayed even though it's not really full screen.
    I believe that in Win10 determining the full display area will be useful and not just retrieving the application window size.

  • Why the iPod classic needs to be updated

    Two things:
    - iTunes U content, should have its own menu section in the device. Why put all that stuff into a single Movies category.
    - Front Row or similar application is needed. Why is it sold a Universal Dock with a Remote, while there is no way of actually controlling the device, and using it effectively through a tv or monitor.
    Regards,

    I've only recently downloaded anything from iTunesU and was optimistically hoping something sensible would happen when I synced the tracks to the iPod. Sadly not. While I quite agree that Apple could & should update the iPod with a dedicated section for iTunesU it is possible with iTunes 9 to switch the Media Kind to Podcast which at least gives more organisation to any iTunesU content. As far as I can tell you need to remove & resync the tracks for the switch to take place on the iPod.

  • Why the groupware connector need Read/Write access for all mailboxes?

    Hi,
    Does anybody know the technical side of how the  Groupware connector creates activities,tasks and contacts?
    I know it's not sending them with SMTP, it's work with DCOM,
    is it creates it directly in the recipient mailbox!?, and thats why it needs write access?
    kind regards,
    Pavel, sheynkman.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the information but i already red this note and the .doc files,
    it still not answering WHY you need this permission? to answer this question you need to know the technical side,an answers to question like how the GW put the contacts or the activities in the user's inbox(using DCOM)?
    Think about that:
    If i have BP's that is not part of my organization, no way somebody will give me administrate permissions on his mailbox.
    So if this is really true SAP Didn't think that through.

  • Lenovo... why did you "DownGrade" the ThinkPads?

    Dear Sirs, this is a complain and I hope someone will read it in order to make Lenovo ThinkPad's product line become the top choice again.
    I'm a ThinkPad user since... the '90. As a result I know the product and I use it daily. I've purchased a new T440 and basically my complain is about the quality. My feeling is that you "DownGraded" the ThinkPad and I don't understand why. You already have a low-cost line of products (IdeaPad). Why overlapping the two lines? ThinkPads are professional products, not consumer. I will be more precise why some examples:
    a. The ETH port is located on the right side. Most people are right-handed and use a mouse. Mouse and ETH cable on the same right side don't work well.
    b. The cover has nothing that helps opening it. How are you expected to open the cover? With one finger... with two fingers... holding the bottom down?
    c. The keyboard misses several keys and leds that are needed:
    1. CAPS LOCK: who much does a CAPS LOCK led cost? Nothing and it saves a lot of time.
    2. Contextual Menu: usually a key located between "AltGr" and "Ctrl". Very useful when typing text and running grammar correction. Don't answer that I can use the mouse because this is the typical answer by someone that doesn't use PCs for typing.
    3. The Numerical Keys.
    4. The HDD activity LED. When a PC doesn't respond as expected (or even freezes for a while) the first thing you look at is the HDD LED. There is no one any more.
    5. The PAUSE Key.
    d. ONLY 2 USB ports.
    The T440 is my Company's Laptop and I personally own a X301. I was considering buying a new ThinkPad for my personal use in place of the X301 but after this T440 experience I'm considering other products.
    Please let me know what you think and share with us what are you planning for the near future.
    Thank you.

    Did you add or change your credit card details when downloading the app ? If so then you've probably received a temporary store holding charge, which should disappear within a few days : holding charges. Or have you made any in-app purchases within the app (what app is it) ? If you log into your account on your computer's iTunes (Store > View My Account), what shows under your purchase history ?
    As these are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here, I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from the post's title.

  • Why the underlined code is needed?

    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class TestCoding{
         public static void main(String[] args)throws IOException{
    DataInputStream sysin = new DataInputStream(System.in);
              String strout = null;
              String enc = System.getProperty("file.encoding");
              System.out.println("file.encoding is " + enc);
              while ((strout = sysin.readLine()).length() != 0) {
                   System.out.println(strout);
                   byte[] ad=strout.getBytes("ISO-8859-1");
    String sendToServer = new String(ad);
    System.out.println(sendToServer);
    when I input chinese chars ,such as "",then the direct output of "System.out.println(strout);" will be "????",but the second output is correct!
    and the system setting is : jre1.5.0_06, windows server 2003
    My doubt is : since the default coding is GBK, why the underlined statement is needed for correct displaying?
    Any help is appreciated!

    The real mystery is why people continue using
    DataInputStream to read text despite the depracation
    of the readLine method with the following warning:
    Deprecated. This method does not properly convertbytes to characters. As of JDK 1.1,
    the preferred way to read lines of text is via theBufferedReader.readLine()I don't think people will get the messages if they are working on plain text editor. That's why.

    Okay - let's cut to the chase...
    If the Menu Bar (File, Edit... Help) shown in my screenshot below is not visible, use CTRL+B to display it. Then click on Help/Check for Updates. If one is available, you will be able to select it at this time.
    Note the item at the bottom of the list; About iTunes. Selecting that will show you which version of iTunes you are using.
    An alternative method to display the Menu Bar is click on the box in the top left of your iTunes window...

    you don't need a cc subscription to use the purchased copy.
    download the installation file and use your serial number to activate when given the licensing option during installation.  you should install 5.7 instead of installing 5.0 and updating.
