Why the Unavailability of Foreign Language Keyboards in the US?

I am a foreign language student (Russian), and am trying to buy a foreign language apple keyboard (preferably wireless) in the states. I know they are available in Europe (my stepdaughter confirms she can get one thriugh her apple store), yet when I try to do the same here, they deny they even exist!! (This is the case even on the online store!!!)
I tried to order one from one of the European Stores online (actually, more than one) and it won't let me complete the order, even if I make payment in the local currency (pounds, euros, francs, rubles, or what have you).
This is a frustrating (and in my opinion, fairly serious) problem, and I am sure I am not the only one who is going through this fiasco. I certainly don't want to pay 5x the price via a "smuggler", I would rather get peripherials FOR my apple FROM apple.
So Apple, what gives? There's a market for these products here, my MacBook Pro WILL support this product... So why won't you let me buy one (or even admit to me you even have such a thing, when those overseas have free access to them)?

I do not want to get on your case, but Apple is a business, one that tries to make a profit. Carrying items in inventory that serve a tiny number of individuals in the US actually costs them money. But they'd also have to carry inventory in every single foreign language keyboard, and the costs become huge.
Moreover, and with all due respect, if you're here in the US studying, you really need a US English keyboard. And as the other poster said, you have access to the Russian character map for keys, so if you have to write home, you can write in Russian, and you'll be happy.
By the way, all of us here are users like you. Getting annoyed hardly ever gets you help. If you want to complain to Apple go here.

  • In the advanced tab of languages and Region the time and date formats will not change

For a certian Application I am using I need to change the format of the Time and Date. I had no problems in Mountain Lion. In the advanced tab of languages and Region the time and date formats will not change. I need the date format to read as 01/01/14 and time format to read 13:00. As I said this was easily done in Mountain Lion and all previous Apple OS. I suspect it's an issue with in the OS.

You're right, it has been that way for a long time. I've never bothered reporting it as a bug since it's simple enough to deal with, but reporting it would be a reasonable thing to do.

  • Foreign language keyboard

Hi, I am a complete AppleMac novice, so far always went for a "regular" PC. I have a question which may appear very silly, bear with me. I work with 4 languages as a translator (English/German/French/Portuguese) and I need a Lapttop with a "Continental" keyboard where all the various foreign character keys are already present. A UK/US keyboard is no good as I need the speed of direct input. As Apple sells in Switzerland, where all those special keys are needed I could imagine that Apple produces machines with Continental keyboards. Does anybody know if it would be possible to obtain such an "continental" Apple MacPro in the UK? Grateful for any answer. Thank you, merci, vielen Dank, obrigado

You can determine for yourself what keyboards are available from the Apple online store in the UK by just going to their website and pretending to buy a macabook and looking at the keyboard options offered.
Are you aware that even the normal US or British keyboard layout lets you type all accented characters directly by either a) Character Picker, which appears when you hold down the key for the base letter, or b) option key shortcuts like option + e, then e = é?
The US International PC keyboard layout is also great for multilingual work, as all you do is type the accent mark first and then the base character, e.g. ' then e gives you é.
Continental keyboards are quite different, many are azerty or qwertz instead of qwerty, and normally only a few accented characters for the local language can be typed without using any kind of shortcut, etc.  You can see what they look like at

  • Foreign Language Keyboards

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I want to type in languages other then English, preferably without buying new keyboards. I feel like there should be a way to download a widget or something that will integrate with my text program and allow me to see what the foreign keyboard looks like on the bottom of my screen while I type on my US keyboard - and the text will appear in the other language. Specifically, languages like Hebrew or Arabic which have different characters. Any ideas?
    thanks

Even worse is the Pashtu scripting style commonly used in Pakistan which effectively so intertwines the characters that Newspaper headlines are still handlettered today and stripped into the typeset copy.
See the thread on Apple Advanced Typography. The thread cites the Monotype Recorder for 1981. This was the year Monotype Nastaliq was introduced for the Farsi and Urdu markets.
The implementation was developed, as the thread says, in co-operation with the Pakistan association of lithographic printers.
Before a team of Cambridge phycists headed by Prof Dr John Billingsley in 1976 finished developing a laser imaging system with funding from the Monotype Corporation, and before that system was applied to the most complex Arabic calligraphy, Nastaliq was calligraphed, the calligraphy photographed, and the reproductions photographically copied onto the printing surface. The first metal composition of Monotype Naskh for the western Arabic market was in 1976 and IBM did not introduce a daisywheel Selectric for Naskh until the mid-nineteen seventies. Dr Joseph Becker's article on Arabic composition in the Xerox Star operating system appeared in Scientific American in 1984 (the table-based transform approach had by then been sold by Monotype for four years, which US writers tend to 'forget' as Monotype was not perceived as a US supplier).
The rub with the Arabic script and with Indic scripts is indeed that, "Aesthetics can play such a large part of what is found acceptable that mere mechanical methods of laying out text fails." Where does the border lie between incorrect orthography, correct orthography with lowend typography, and correct orthography with highend typography. The Unicode/TrueType idea was to leave this to the type maker who in the obligatory simple CMAP shaping would support correct orthography with lowend typography and in the optional smart MORX shaping would support such level of sophistication as suited the design and the market. If people expect to get highend Arabic TrueType with endless ligation and intonations for recitals and much else for free, then this is not going to happen.
Incidentally, Adobe's Arabic contains PostScript. It was developed by John Hudson who had to hop through hoops backwards since Microsoft VOLT does not support PostScript, so the shaping logic had to be copied and pasted. If memory serves Apple's tools do not support PostScript either. Anyway, what this discussion needs is a few folks with advanced knowledge of Arabic calligraphy. And I'm absolutely not one such.

  • How to Send Foreign Language Email from the iPhone

See this site for online keyboards for some other languages which can be used to generate a mail message from the iPhone.

The keyboard included in the current version of the iPhone is limited to English. But at this site you will find online keyboards for some European languages which can be used to generate a mail message from the iPhone.

  • Toggling between foreign language keyboards possible?

    Hi!
I am learning Hebrew and would like to make flash cards on my Mac, which means I'll be typing in both English and Hebrew. I've already successfully set up the Hebrew and English keyboards via the International Preference Pane.
My question is: *Can I toggle between the Hebrew and English keyboard??* This would be such a huge help (vs having to use the mouse!).
    Thank you!!

yes, you can. go to system preferences->international->input menu. check the box next to Hebrew. This will activate input menu in your menu bar. you can switch between inputs there. also, you can use keyboard shortcuts to do it that way. i don't remember what are the default shortcuts to toggle input menus but you can see them in system preferences->keyboard&mouse->keyboard shortcuts. you can also change them to what you want there.

  • Can you create a keyboard short cut for the dictation mic with bluetooth keyboards? The multi-button requirement to open the onscreen is annoying and unintuitive.

(Using an "iPad 3", i dont care what apple calls it) There should be a built in one button access to this from EVERY keyboard since this function is used to replace typing. An inherent Apple shortcut like copy and paste. I set my iPad up on a framed photo holder and use it like a moniter screen when I write, my Bluetooth keyboard is separated from it and makes writing comments and long articles less efficient because it requires extra steps with every dictation, while taking up screen space to have the on screen open. There needs to be a way to access dictation without the onscreen keyboard open, via any standard keyboard.

I was "reasonably frustrated" for having more than one answer offered for a question that not only didn't I ask, but made it clear I was aware of the information it appears they cut and paste at me.
I see it as: the title of my post should inform any person with an elementery handeling of the english language that I not only have this type of keyboard but am well aware it has a button for the ONSCREEN keyboard. That makes it look like they were just "approval hunting" #1. 2nd Grampa Joe's generic sounding response as a zero level newbie already who found "this" post where the first line is about keyboard shortcuts......WHEN there are better posts with more views and commets for exactly that. Approval hunting #2. I'd say based on both, my suspicion is darn reasonably justified sir.
"couldn't find the answer he wanted" no sir, I didn't get an answer at all, they answered OTHER questions. Questions I didn't ask, even after having explained myself more clearly. If anyone is a Jerk, it's you for jumping to eronous conclusions and attacking me for them on personal level. I made a justified claim based on the BLACK AND WHITE TEXT, that it still appears to me is well supported, you just flung mud.........who's the jerk?
Finally, your first post answered my question directly. Thank you. However under General/Keyboard, at the bottom you can make keyboard shortcuts. They may not function how I'm asking, but you can make them.

  • I don't need the thousands of foreign language files.  How do I NOT install them?

Why does Adobe insist on barfing thousands of files on the hard drive when many aren't needed by most users.  I'm not saying specific ones aren't needed period.  I just don't have a need for them.  Someone that doesn't speak my language may not need mine.  Why are we forced to fill the drive up with this and what is the method for NOT installing them?

This forum is to discuss the forums, not products, and not installing products
Start at http://forums.adobe.com/index.jspa and find the product you have, and ask your question there
But, in general (it has been awhile since I installed CS5 Master Collection, so I don't remember the exact screens) you need to actually read the options on the screen
If you accept the "default" install option, you get just that... if you want a custom install where YOU choose the options, you need to select that and check, or un-check, according to your needs

I would love to see a new feature to allow the use of different keyboard language on multiple monitors with the same desktop mac.
