Why turning off Document and Data in iCloud would erase all files in iPad?

When turning off calendar or contact in iCloud, I can select to keep existing entries in the iPad device, but there is no option to "keep" doc. & data files in my iPad device?   How can I select files I want to keep in iCloud rather than upload them in a "wholesale" fashion?

Hi doodlebuglondon. I understood you throughout the thread as I have the same situation. I turned it on, then decided immediately to turn it back off. It then gives you the scary warning, assuming you understand under what circumstances documents got stored in the iCloud. Like you, I had no idea. But I did see 5 GB of 5GB available on iCloud Storage, which was a hint. So I opened a folder with some Pages documents, turned off Documents & Data, clicked the big scary "Delete from Mac" button. If it had really deleted my iWorks documents, like you, I would have had to restore perhaps 40 or 50 disparate folders. Whew!
Did it work out OK for you? I note you were very clear in pointing out you hadn't actively put anything in iCloud, but who knows whether Apple magically puts stuff in iCloud for you. I couldn't find that explained anywhere in Apple's "instructions", but I'm sure it's buried in there somewhere.

my iPhone. How do I turn it back on?

If you're running iOS 8, it's on by default and you don't have the option to turn it off.  You can confirm that it's on by checking Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage and make sure you see your apps are listed under the Documents & Data setting.  (It will only list apps that sync documents & data with iCloud.)

  • Turn off documents and data

I don't want to backup my documents and data on iCloud.  When I try to turn this option off, I see "If you turn off documents and data, all documnets stored in iCloud will be deleted from this Mac"
Yikes! What the heck is that all about and how can I get around it?

The documents and data will remain on the iCloud server and your Mac will no longer have access to them if your turn this off.  To keep a local copy, you'll need to save them first as discussed under "Documents" in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4910.

  • I want to turn off Documents and Data iCloud syncing (in Sys Prefs on iMac) but it insists on deleting all docs from my iMac! HELP!

I don't want to sync my 'Documents and Data' with iCloud any more (iMac, iPhone and iPad).  When I go into iCloud in System Prefs and try to uncheck the Documents and Data box it tells me 'all docments stored in iCloud will be deleted from this Mac'.  Really need to keep all my docs and quite shocked that iCloud would even consider deleting them from my iMac.  Does anyone know any way round this other than backing everything up and restoring it after it's been deleted? Thanks!

  • Ihave over 7gb of saved text messages that i cant delete, ive deleted all my texts and it still says that. ive read that backing up with icloud and turning off documents and data would eliminate this issue... well how...?

icloud will not allow me to backup my phone because of the 7gb of data its too much for the 5gb free space on icloud and i have the documents and data turned off in the icloud settings so i dont understand whats taking up all the space? the only thing i have on the settings is my photos and thats only 4gb. SOMEONE HELP ME!!!

I have this identical problem.  For a while my group texts didnt show up on my ipad.  Then one day they did, maybe everyone in the group started using the same os version or something.  Ever since my first reply to the group there have been complaints of multiple threads.  I can not find a pattern for when my group text's decide they want to create a new thread. (it doesnt happen every time)  Everyone in the group has deleted the thread, we've all toggled imessage on/off etc.  There still hasn't been a solution.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • How can I save to iCloud after turning OFF "Documents and Data"?

I seldom store documents on iCloud, and I was tired of having iCloud be the default save location for my Numbers documents, so I went into iCloud Preferences and de-selected "Documents and Data".  That worked.  Now iCloud is no longer the default save location.
But if I wanted to save the occasional spreadsheet on iCloud, how do I get it there without turning "Documents and Data" back on? I thought there was a way to select iCloud as an optional save location, but can't figure out how to do it.

I think the easiest way to get around this problem is to keep a blank document in your Documents folder , the duplicate and save as needed.  The default loacation in this case is where the document is currently stored.

  • Why is my "Documents and Data" section taking up so much space on my iPhone?

Before I updated my iPhone to iOS7, my "Other" section was giant, taking up over 4 GB! After I updated, the section split into "Other" and "Documents and Data". My "Other" section is under control now, but my "Documents and Data" section has over 3 GB, and I can't figure out why. I deleted many, many texts and it hardly changed the usage in this section. I've searched all over Google and Apple and can't seem to find a solution.
I don't even know what this space is used for. What falls under the usage of "Documents and Data"?
And how can I minimize this usage?!
    Someone please help!
    Thanks!!

According to Apple at the time to the iOS launch, it was confirmed that the iOS 8 in iPhone 6 will consume maximum 3GB of space.
So its actually the iOS 8 and the system files that has been categorized in the OTHER section using 2.83GB of space.

  • Cannot find icloud documents and data on iphone 6

I have NOT upgraded to iCloud drive. I went into my settings to use documents and data as I have a few apps that need to sync. The option is not present on the menu anymore.

I have this same issue.  I had to restore my NEW iphone 6 to factory settings yesterday and upgrade to 8.2 after having issues with syncing  in itunes (and an explosion in my "other' category of 28gb). And after three hours on the phone with Apple I still cannot sync (128 gb phone and cannot load my music)!  I did however go into my Icloud settings this morning and turned off "documents and data" for my backup and now the whole line item option is not even in the menu anymore it has completely disappeared.  It seems every day brings a new issue!  Not liking my new phone  I do not want to hear one more person tell me to restore!  I simply did not pay all this money to have to restore everytime I make a change to my iphone!!!!  Oh and I also have NOT upgraded to iCloud drive.

  • Documents and Data on iPhone

I am trying to make more room on my iPhone.  I've gone through all my apps and can't find one that would store documents or data.  Is there a way to find out what is occupying this space?  I've gone through and practically shut off every other sync category.  Thanks!

  • HT4847 what happens if i turn documents and data option off

what happens if i turn documents and data option off

This is what Apple says about documents on icloud.com (from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4910):
    iWork for iOS apps
For documents created with the iWork for iOS apps, you can download those files by visiting icloud.com/iwork on a Mac or PC and downloading a copy.  After downloading the files, you should back them up using the normal methods you use for backing up local files such as Time Machine, manually copying files to external hard drives, and burning to CD/DVD.
    Other apps
For other apps using iCloud Documents, contact the app developer for more information on how to keep a copy of that app's data.
If you go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, you will see a list of the apps that are storing documents and data on iCloud (under Documents & Data).  You can tap each item listed there to see the file names of any documents.

    Hello dsouz,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand wanting to know what data is being stored in Documents & Data and how to manage that space. You can view and remove what is being stored there using the instructions located in the attached article.
    iCloud: Remove documents from iCloud
WARNING:    When you delete items that are stored in iCloud, they are removed from all your devices immediately and permanently.
Remove iCloud documents using your iOS device
On an iOS device set up for iCloud Documents & Data, do one of the following:
With iOS 8: Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage, then tap Manage Storage.
With iOS 7: Go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage.
Under Documents & Data, tap the app that has a document you want to delete, then tap Edit.
    Best regards,
    Joe
