Why use FileVault instad of login

Hi, I'm confused about the difference between FileVault and having a regular login. To me, it seems that they both do the very same thing. So what's the difference, and why should I bother with FileVault?

1. Does FileVault make my computer safer over the internet as well? I understand that it helps when I'm logged out, but does FileVault do anything for me when I'm logged in?
2. When I enter the FileVault-password at the login-screen, does this decrypt the encryption or is the system still encrypted?
3. Is OS X still encrypted when I use the operatingsystem, or only when it's on the login screen? If it's still encrypted while I'm using OS X, then what happens to files that I share? For exemple, are files i share with drop box encrypted for other users?
4. Will my computer perform worse with FileVault active?
5. Is there anyway to use FileVault on additional discs, or does it only work with the startup disk?
6. Does anything actually happen with OS X after I activate FileVault, or does it function in the same exact manner?

I did this while reading a LV question of the subject.

Try disabling hardware acceleration. Many visual bugs can be attributed to issues with graphics drivers.
(Firefox -> Options -> Advanced -> General -> [ ] Use hardware acceleration when available)

why is there a guest account who can use safari in my login window when i completely disabled the guest account. I disabled the guest account so others wont be able to use the internet, specifically safari, on my mac, as a form of security/parental control and now anyone who wants to go online csn do so.

FileVault stalled/failed at 80% after upgrade to Yosemite and choosing to use Filevault

Since upgrade to Yosemite and choosing to use FileVault which has been 10 days now, FileVault keeps saying estimating time remaining. I have run diskutil cs list multiple times and sometimes it says 80% complete and other times it says failed. I've also run EtreCheck multiple times and sometimes it says converting and other times it says failed. System running slow or low on memory since upgrade also. I have a MacBook Pro 15" early 2011, 2 GHz Intel Cor i7, 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 and here is my last EtreCheck report.

The update could not have degraded your clips in any way. There is simply no mechanism for that to happen at all. When viewing the updated timelines, click on the Viewer to select is, Shift-Z will "fit to window". Be sure you're not viewing them larger than you did before. Also, delete all render files.
The only other thing I can think of, is that your hardware is older and Yosemite is taxing it. FCPX will degrade image quality so it can get smoother playback on occasions. But when you stop playback and are parked on a single frame, you'll see the full resolution. This could be happening also. What are your Mac's specs?
BTW, video noise is very, very difficult to get rid of. You can improve it, but short of something like the very expensive (and very long rendering) Neat Video plugin, video noise is something you mostly live with, if it is too drastic in the image.

I understand the instructions to create a new account id (apple id) from the old aol account. However, does this mean my purchases will be split into 2 accounts; or does the fact that I currently see everything under my apple id (regardless of the purchased by username) mean this will all still appear in my current account as it does now?

You see them where when you login your non-AOL account ?
If you currently have two accounts (the AOL username account and an email address account) then you will continue to have two accounts, and nothing should change when you update the AOL account to be an email address (apart from how you access that account).
You will just be renaming the account to have an email address for accessing it, not creating a new account.

Look on one of your bank statements and be sure to enter the billing address exactly as it shows on the statement. Some folks forget where they actually get the statement. They put their home address in iTunes/Mac App Store and they actually get the statement at their place of employment or vice versa.

Remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption?

Does anyone know of a way to perform a remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption? I have some remote Macs for which I'd like to enable full disk encryption with FileVault, but would prefer not to make a physical trip to those machines whenever they need a reboot. I strongly suspect the answer to this question is "No", without some form of IP KVM, but I figured I'd double-check. If anyone knows of any reasonably priced Mac-compatible KVMs that would be great too. Thanks.

Why use Oracle 8.1.5 for Linux?

If it is really pain in the ass to install Oracle on Linux, why
use it? I have spent more than 4 full days (more than what I
excepted) to try to install Oracle on a Linux box.
I guess I will go for mySQL since I can just install the RPM
package and do not have to worry those critical issues.
Just a note for Oracle, please design a better Installer next
time which is going to work! Thank you.

I have some sympathy for your plight. I have 8.0.5 installed on
RedHat Linux. Apart from patching the Pro*C configuration file,
everything is fine.
It does seem 8.1.5 is more problematic. If you're purely
evaluating Oracle, maybe you should consider 8.0.5 until 8i
stabilises unless you really are gagging for some 8i feature.

Hi Vikky,
for insert/select it depends on what kind of user you are. TopLink lets you browse and click on a tables and have everything generated for you. If you are more a DBA or show me the SQL type then you can just type SQL directly.
Some advantages of TopLink would be:
-The range of SQL generated by TopLink is limited, but if you hard code complex SQL into your service you need to maintain it.
-TopLink can generate at runtime the correct SQL for a given database, making switching from say DB2 to Oracle easy.
-The merge operation will compare the input XML to the columns on the database and update only what has changed. It can also do a sparse merge. If only 4 columns in the XML were set, only those 4 columns in the database will be updated.
-For inbound polling the strategy used (LogicalDelete, Sequencing Table, etc) is a configuration property and then at runtime multiple SQL statements are generated. The SQL also takes advantage of advanced syntax like the Oracle-only FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED, writing it all yourself may be tedious and error prone.
-The main benefit of TopLink is when you go beyond thinking about a single table. If you import multiple related tables at once, TopLink will generate the SQL to select from and maintain multiple tables, establish a commit order, and generate a hierarchical XSD. With custom SQL the matching XSD is always flat. I.e. if you just need to insert an emp you could get away with custom SQL. If you need to insert a dept and emps, I would use TopLink.
-This is also when the intermediary abstraction of an object/table makes more sense, as you only need to import a complex relational schema once, then generate inserts, selects, etc.
So I hope that helps. They are each equally viable and can do something that the other can't. Where you see an overlap I would go with personal preference.

Why use interlaced ?

We shoot with DVCpro50 at 24p.
A few questions.
1. Is there anytime that there is an advantage, or a time when you have to use field dominance ?
Interlaced footage looks like crap. Stills look horrible in an interlaced timeline - why ever use it ?
It seems I can just switch the field dominance from "lower/even" to "none" and everything looks 10 times better on computer and NTSC monitor.
2. Is there anytime that there is a disadvantage to removing the pulldown and editing in 24fps. It looks 10 times better without the screwd up "B/C & C/D" frames if you leave it in and edit at 29.97fps.
3. is there any advantage or quality enhancement by removing the pulldown in "Shake" rather than letting FCP do it while capturing. And after removing, should your sequence timeline be set to 24fps or 23.98fps and why ?
4. Have G5, OSX 10.4.8, AJA IO hooked up to NTSC monitor, and can't view 24fps timeline on external NTSC monitor - only frames when parked - is that because these monitors will only accept 29.97 field dominated footage ?

I know how TV works and why NTSC was invented over a half century ago.
Now that I can monitor on the external I will always edit in 24. I'm only the editor - they shoot with a SPX900 in 24p - if you don't remove the pulldown, frames 3 & 4 out of the 5 frame cycle combined with the interlacing gives really bad results. So out of curiosity I switched the sequence dominance setting from "lower/even" to "none" - at this point is ii still treated as interlaced or if it is set to "none" is it now progressive, like when you are editing in 24 and the field dominance window is greyed out. I would think that this would look jittery on a TV because the field order isn't right - but it doesn't - I can make DVD, VHS(not sure why), and monitor and the only difference is that the stills look incredibly better - there's no banding and stair stepping on the shoulders- on either the computer monitor or the NTSC monitor. And with it set to "lower/even" the bigger the computer or TV screen the worse it looks - but with it set to "none" the stills just get softer as you view them on bigger screens as if the right amount of gaussian blur was being added automatically - Isn't that wht you want ?
So that was why I ask "why use interlace" if you have a choice?
I'm not trying to be cool - these are ligitimate questions. I consider this doing my homework - isn't that what forums are for - I help people with answers all of the time.
As for part 3 - Does "standard pulldown" refer to going back & forth between 24fps (film) and 29.97 (video) and "advanced pulldown" from 23.98 to 29.97 ?
Are all of these modern video cameras actually shooting at 23.98 ?

Files will not open in Dreamweaver when using Filevault

Has anyone seen a problem where you cannot open files on a
server when your HD is encyrpted using Filevault on the mac os
10.4.? When filevault is turned off you can go to the server and
open the dreamweaver files with no problem.

Desktop configurations within IE need to be updated. The example below is for .doc extensions, but the same process applies for other document types.
1. Right Click START button and click OPEN from the context menu
2. This will open up the START MENU window
3. In this window, under TOOLS, click FOLDER OPTIONS
4. Click the FILE TYPES tab and wait for all the file types to be listed
5. Scroll down to the DOC file type
6. With the DOC file type (Microsoft Word Document) selected, click the ADVANCED button
7. This will bring up the EDIT FILE TYPE window
8. Click to highlight the OPEN action and make sure to check the BROWSE IN SAME
WINDOW option
9. Click OK to close the Edit File Type window
10. Click CLOSE to close the Folder Options window
11. Click CLOSE to close the Start Menu window

I have a lot of grief with this version of Windows Media Player.
It is very buggy and frustrating to use.
I have my Music library on a QNAP NAS, which is as reliable as they come.
System notifications make it not save changes. It also does not do a good job of interpreting albums and artists from folders. Changes to track names are not saved, nor are tracks moved to other albums, renamed albums, changes to genre, artist
or date. It separates and merges albums/tracks without sense or reason. Some changes I've made up to 4 times, then closed WMP and re-started my machine to check if it has/hasn't saved the changes. Often it has not.
This is the first time I've used WMP in this capacity, and I do not recommend it.
New service pack please.

Hi Frank,
In the example, the "{cache-name}" is supposed to be replaced by the database's table or view name that will be queried for the data to be cached. It's purpose is demonstrate how to pass parameters to the class constructor.
