Why use JAVA 3D?

I have created a number of 3D models in MAYA and am looking for a environment into which to export them that will allow plenty of interaction and ease of navigation.
My choices for this are VRML, JAVA 3D, DIVE or Adobe Atmosphere. I would like to know whether JAVA 3D would be a good environment for my project and why it would suit it.
The user should be able to explore the buildings and be able to navigate around them with an option to enter the building (ie view another model) on clicking the mouse on the door of the building.
I am using VRML for this at the moment but am wondergin if maybe JAVA 3D would be better?
Any help/advice appreciated!
Mazz

I had (have ) the same problem. I built a vrml version of my work building and posted it on a web site with the target audience as non computer savy people(they may be, but my observations indicate otherwise). They have to download a vrml browser, install it then download the vrml files and and unzip those( which may also be a new experience). Running the world in an applet has got to be easier for them. I have been looking at opengl and directx but there has to be an easier way for me.
I have found the vrml file loaders will not load a complete vrml world, but will load a vrml object. I found a web page with class files called cybervrml which promises to read and write vrml files. I posted the address earlier. I haven't given it a try, having just got the first example to spin in my java ide.
VRML does have some interaction but it seems limited.

    Why should we use java beans?
    Everybody says it is used to set the properties. What does this mean?
    Can anyone give me a realtime scenario of the problems it can solve?

  • Why use Java

    Hello
    I want some clarifications in regards to Java
    Now I create a Program lets say a simple calculator
    which will be used in Windows program.. then
    of course I also want to distribute this program
    to fellow friends.Now if creating an exe file
    in Java is not possible (or may have to use some 3rd party programs)
    then What do Java programmers use Java for??
    I very much understand the use of an Applet
    but if I can not create a stand alone program
    and Deploy it then can any one give me a few example
    as how other people are using Java program for??
    thanks for your time

    I've used InstallAnywhere Now! to deploy basic apps to friends before. You can find it here:
    http://www.zerog.com/downloads_05.html
    It takes care of making your program executable on most operating systems. If you get any jvm errors when running the installer it creates for you then try packaging your program with a specific JVM. The size of your setup file will be a quite a bit larger, but if you're putting it on cd it shouldn't matter. I had a similar problem with InstallSheild when I tried it (maybe it was just me). Anyway, I decided to use this one because it was free and the program I used it for was written for a friend (that I didn't charge :-)

  • Why use Java Enum as class attributes?

    From the sample entity code from ADF, I notice that an Enum class is used to contain all attributes of a class (as below). What are the benefits of using Enum here and not the traditional declaration {int EmpId, public int getEmpId(), public void setEmpId(int)} ; ? If this is a design pattern, what pattern is it? Thank you.
    public class EmployeeImpl extends EntityImpl {
    public enum AttributesEnum {
    EmpId {
    public Object get(UsersImpl obj) {
    return obj.getUserId();
    public void put(UsersImpl obj, Object value) {
    obj.setUserId((DBSequence)value);
    }

  • Why should I use Java

    HI,
    Someone asked me why are you using Java when you can use Visual Basic.
    Well, I ask this question in this forum ?? why ...
    please leave out the portablity part
    --j

    Well, here is my 2 cents, as it were. I tried learning VB, and found that while it is powerful, when it comes to designing specifically for Windows systems, I found it extremely hard to understand. When I first learned Java, it didn't take me long to understand the concept and relation of classes and objects, and I was writing Swing apps in no time. With VB, it wasn't that easy. Yes, it was mostly drag and drop and add a few lines of code, but I don't like that. I like to be able to get down into the code and see why it works the way it did, and with VB, I just couldn't grasp it. But with Java, it took me no time at all to be able to understand why it worked the way it did, and because of that, I will always choose Java over any other language, except maybe Miva Script, which is a server side language used for e-commerce websites. It was another language that was easy to learn. Does this mean I'm a lazy programmer, always taking the easy way out? Probably, but if it's easy for me to learn, it's easy for me to implement.

  • Why is it such a pain to use java in a country that uses commas as decimal?

    Why is it such a pain to use java in a country that uses commas as decimal separator?
    A few weeks back I've asked here about the keypad decimal key. For some reason, java doesn't map the decimal key to a comma on the Portuguese (Portugal) keyboard layout. I've got no answer and I ended up using a custom plainDocument on the JTextFields to replace all points with commas.
    Now, I've just spent the whole morning trying to store and use decimal numbers properly. For some reason, a Double/Float .valueOf method (or the corresponding parse method) simply ignores the locale in use and uses US defaults when parsing the string. I can't parse anything with commas in those methods and I should, as it is the decimal separator for the system and default locale being used by java.
    First of all, I shouldn't be expected to perform replacements on every single operation that comes with a comma and I obviously can't be expected to program my own locale checking to decide what decimal separator to use in each final system. Second, is there any way to work with numbers seamlessly, without having to know the locale of the end user?
    I'm sorry if this is all my fault for doing something completly wrong, I'm new to java and I did search around to no avail. I'm really frustrated with what seems to be a complete lack of support in java for locales other than the US one.

    Good old Cobol has the "DECIMAL-POINT IS COMMA" clause... And isn't it great? :)
    Second, is there any way to work with numbers seamlessly, without having to know the locale of the end user?Consider "123.456". In some locales, this number is one hundred twenty-three thousand, four hundred fifty-six. In other locales it is one hundred twenty-three and four hundred fifty-size thousandths. How will you be able to determine which, without a locale?That's not what I've meant. Java should know the locale and behave accordingly. I don't have to know the locale of the end user since it might vary greatly. My point is that if strings are flying around with commas and if comma is the decimal separator on the end user's machine, any method aimed at parsing a numeric value out of a string should regard commas as such. I'm constantly replacing dots with commas and vice versa which could cause trouble if a different locale is used.
    And I mean that as a rant. Given my inexperience with Java, there might be good reasons for such a behaviour as baftos argued. What I'm really interested is in finding the proper way to deal with this issue.
    Have you tried the NumberFormat.parse? I will now.

  • Why use customized / particular exceptions instead java.lang.Exception

    Hi,
    Do any of you guys know where can I find a theorical statement / explanation about why use particular / customized exceptions instead java.lang.Exception? I am aware that it consumes more resources and becomes a heavier object, as well as the clearness when coding and all that stuff; however, my boss wants to see a tech document where all this is clearly stated. Any resource over there?
    Regards

    It is better to throw specific--or at least module- or
    package-specific--excpetions, rather than Exception,
    because then the caller knows what to expect. However,
    if you declare "throws Exception", the caller can
    still catch IOException, SQLException, etc.,
    separately. He'll just have to be a really good
    guesser as to which ones he should catch.True.
    Also, there's no point in declaring "throws
    NullPointerException." Any method can throw it without
    declaring it. If you generate your own NPE (or other
    unchecked exception) inside the method, then you
    should document it in the javadoc comments, but you
    don't need to put it in the throws clause. It doesn't
    do any harm, but it's redundant and cluttersome.It was an example and I wasn't feeling too creative....excuse me. ;-) But yeah, I've never thrown NPE ever.
    I'm assuming overhead caused by extending classes.At
    the worst, it would be miniscule, or so I wouldthink.
    What overhead is created by extending classes?Hmm, I was under the impression that a class the extended another class, inherited all of the other classes data (variables, etc.). Hence, you get something like this:
    SuperClass1 + SubClass1 + SubClassOfSubcCass1 = Memory usuage for SubClassOfSubClass1.
    Since adding postivie number will always end up increasing data, SubClassOfSubClass1 will use more dtat than SuperClass1.
    Am I wrong?

  • If RuneScape uses Java 3D why don't you need to install it?

    I was just wondering if RuneScape uses Java 3D, why doesn't anyone need to install it? Is it because the game is intirely server side and all the graphics and stuff is done over on their servers and not on your own computer? Thanks.

    Most likely, you have a web plugin that depends on the Java runtime distributed by Apple, such as the Facebook video calling plugin or the "NexDef" plugin for watching baseball streams. If you no longer need the plugin, remove it, including its automatic update mechanism (if any) according to the developer's instructions. Otherwise, install Java.

    In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app

    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
    If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • Why do u use JAVA ? :-)

    Hello All,
    Please tell me your reasons of using Java if you know in advance that your application will run under specific OS.
    Thanks

    Oh yeah, and it's a great language to teach folks object-oriented techniques. It helps get them in the mindset of things being objects that communicate through methods. That is, of course, unless you want to add two Integer instances together... :)
    Dan
    Being a Smalltalk developer, it's a much nicer
    language than C++ because it "uses" some of the same
    benefits that Smalltalk has had for 20+ years. It's
    pretty close to being object-oriented (still arguably
    object-based due to base types that aren't real
    objects) and there's a wide support base for
    developing under it. And, to echo a sentiment from
    another poster, there's a slew of free
    tools/frameworks that can be used to do some pretty
    slick stuff.
    Granted, I'll be a heck of a lot happier when/if they
    eliminate base types and go with all objects or at
    least beef-up the Number hierarchy to do math in an
    object-oriented manner (I can rant on that for days).

  • I cannot use JAVA with Firefox but I can use it with Internet Explorer WHY?

    I have never had a problem when JAVA 7 was needed to use a program. Until now. Firefox will not allow me to use Java. I have to open Internet Explorer when working with any program and it works.

    To protect Firefox users, Mozilla has blocked/disabled Java 7 u6 and below due to serious security flaws in the previous versions of Java 7. The security flaw would also apply to any other browser using the affected versions of Java 7. You can see the version of Java and whether it is disabled in Add-ons > Plugins; look for "Java Platform SE...". See - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/p138

  • Why would you use Java over C/C++

    This thread :
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=689490
    Brought back to mind a problem I had in the first C program I worked on -
    I'd declared an array and a file pointer on the stack in a function, overwrote the end of the array by mistake, and trashed the file pointer. The file pointer was used a while after the array was overwritten - took me 2 days to work out what was happening. Array overwrites like this are just not possible in Java - that's a reason to use Java over C or C++.
    Anyone else got their own scare stories like this ? Maybe someone's got a Java scare story that would make you use C ?

    A C++ based bond trading system had the description database varchar field width of 60 characters. The GUI software to display this had buffers 60 characters wide. New bonds came along with widths of over 60 characters so the database field width was changed to 80 characters but nobody told us (the GUI maintenance team) about the change.
    There was no real problem for about 4 days after the first long named bond was inserted. Then, at random times, the GUI application would crash. It took many many days to find the source of the problem and to fix it. The blame was laid at the door of the GUI maintenance team even though we had not written the code and we had logged the potential problem in the bug database months before but management decided that it was not a problem so should not be 'fixed'.
    This literally cost millions because the traders could not be sure of their positions.
    I left as soon as my contract ran out.

  • ORA-04030: out of process memory when using Java Stored Procedures

    Hello,
    I have a problem using Java Stored Procedures in Oracle 10g.
    My Java application performs http posts to a webservice and the response is parsed in order to populate some DB tables.
    There is a scheduled job which calls the Java Stored Procedure every x minutes.
    No matter of the 'x minutes' values - after about 160 - 200 calls I get this error:
    ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 1048620 bytes (joxp heap,f:OldSpace)
    ORA-04030: out of process memory when trying to allocate 2097196 bytes (joxp heap,f:OldSpace)
    The job stops just while is posting the http request. The weird thing is that almost each time the first http post request I get this error:

    Can be a problem with JVM threading under Oracle ?

    The server prcess failed to allocate more memory for large objects ( in Oldspace).
    If you Google ORA-04030, you will see several recommendations to work around this.
    The Java VM in the database already has HttpClient, i don't know why you are loading the Apache HttpClient but this might not be the surce of the problem.

  • Why use cursor and for loop?

    Hi All
    So in general why would we use a cursor and a for loop to do update in a stored procedure?
    Why wouldnt we just use a single update statement ?
    is there compelling reason for using a cursor and a for loop: I am reading some code from a co-worker that the business logic for the select (set need to be updated) is complex but the update logic is simple (just set a flag to (0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4).
    But eventually the select come down to a key (row_id) so I re-write it using just a single sql statement.
    The size of the main table is about 2.6 to 3million rows
    Any thoughts on that??
    The code below I just do a google for cursor for update example in case for something to play with
    -Thanks for all your input

    Adding my sixpence...
    PL/SQL is not that different from a SQL perspective than any other SQL client language like Java or C# or C/C++. PL/SQL simply integrates the 2 languages a heck of a lot better and far more transparent than the others. But make no mistake in that PL/SQL is also a "client" language from a SQL perspective. The (internal) calls PL/SQL make to the SQL engine, are the same (driver) calls made to the SQL engine when using Java and C and the others.
    So why a cursor and loops in PL/SQL? For the same reason you have cursors and loops in all these other SQL client languages. There are the occasion that you need to pull data from the SQL engine into the local language to perform some very funky and complex processing that is not possible using the SQL language.
    The danger is using client cursor loop processing as the norm - always pulling rows into the client language and crunching it there. This is not very performant. And pretty much impossible to scale. Developers in this case views the SQL language as a mere I/O interface for reading and writing rows. As they would use the standard file I/O read() and write() interface calls.
    Nothing could be further from the truth. SQL is a very advance and sophisticated data processing language. And it will always be faster than having to pull rows to a client language and process them there. However, SQL is not Turing complete. It is not the procedural type language that most other languages we use, are. For that reason there are things that we cannot do in SQL. And that should be the only reason for using the client language, like PL/SQL or the others, to perform row crunching using a client cursor loop.
