Why was Firefox 4 installed in WIN 7 Program Files x86 directory while Firefox 3.6.12 was installed in the Programs Directory?

After I installed the new Firefox 4.0 today, Secunia reported that there was an insecure version of Firefox 3.6.12 remaining on the computer.
OS = Win 7 Professional.
Firefox 4.0 installed in Program Files (x86) directory, while the old version 3.6.12 remained in the Program Files directory (file version = 1.9.2.3951)
Why did this happen, and can I just delete the old version in the Program Files Directory, or would there be negative consequences if I did this?
Thanks
Bruce

That's an interesting suggestion about how I acquired the 64-bit version.. However, I just responded to the Firefox updater when informed, and let it install itself - I did not get the 3.6.12 from another source, and wasn't even aware that there were 2 versions.
The important question for me is - How do I get rid of the reminants of the 64-bit version in the Program Files Directory? - Is it safe just to delete the Mozilla Firefox directory and its contents?
Is there a 64-bit version of Firefox 4 available, and if so, why didn't it sense that I have a 64-bit system and install the correct version?

  • Why is Firefox "Update" burried so far down in the menu?

Why is Firefox "Update" burried so far down in the menu? I know where it is but others have trouble finding it. Why not bring it out into the light?

    ''the-edmeister [[#answer-695435|said]]''
    <blockquote>
Not every user is going to receive the update on the day it is first released, for a couple of reasons. One is to spread out the load on the updates servers over a few days; not every "ping" that checks for the availability of an update will result in the update being downloaded and installed. Some users may not get the update for a few days, depending upon how often that use Firefox or launch Firefox. ''(Firefox "pings" the update server to see if an update is available as part of the startup routine once a day. For users that keep Firefox open for days at a time and keep their PC running 24/7, they won't get the update until they restart Firefox.)''
The second is when a suspected "issue" is found during the 4 or 5 days prior to the release date, when the "Release Candidate" builds are being tested. In such a case, Mozilla will "throttle" the update server to limit the number of users that get the update. That way far fewer users are inconvenienced with a potentially problematic "build" If it turns out that a "chemspill" build is needed to fix an "issue".

Yes, at last, a simple (for non techie users) responsible answer, accurate, and.......analyze exactly how the update works in firefox. I love that, simple, clear answers for simple questions. :-)

  • Why was I charged the activation fee?

I just joined Verizon this past weekend. We purchased 3 Samsung Galaxy S5's and The Edge 10gb plan. I was told by the CSR that there would not be any activation fees but I would see the sales tax of approx. $90 on my first bill. I was also told my bill would be $220 after discounts and taxes. I received my first bill at $493.10 yesterday.
#1 - Why was I charged the activation fees?
#2 - Why do your CSR's mislead your customers? I'm now being told that my monthly bill will be $267.00.
#3 - How can you allow the treatment of your customers to continue like this?

That so called tax seems kind of high? Activation fees are $35 not $30. There are upgrade fees of $30 for existing customers.
The first bill is pro rata of time used in advance and the days before the month in advance.
The cost of three devices on the edge plan are at least $25 a piece, which should be added in each month. So let's say your monthly plan costs are $160+tax+$75 for the three phones. Is $235+tax then it may be around $267 complete each month.
Never believe anything the service people tell you. Check your receipt and do not sign anything unless all you agree to is on it.

  • Why does the iTunes 64 installer install into the Program Files (x86) directory and run in 32 bit mode?

I have just installed this and even tried to manually get it to install in the "Program Files" directory.  Programs installed into the "Program Files (x86)" directories are 32 bit apps.  This is where the iTunes64Setup file installs to.  Is this intended?  If so, why call it iTunes 64 bit ?  It is compatible in this mode, but iTunes actually running in 64 bit mode could drastically improve performance and processing of large libraries.
Please advise if this is a known issue or if iTunes 64 bit even exists.

The 64-bit version of iTunes is a mixture of 64-bit and 32-bit componentry. You'll also notice on your PC that some of the componentry for iTunes itself is installing in the iTunes folder in the Program files directory (such as the miniplayer). The GEAR drivers used for burning and importing are 64-bit. The iPod service is 64-bit. AMDS is 64-bit. Bonjour is partially 64-bit.
It's normal to see the itunes.exe process running as 32-bit on a 64-bit system.

  • Why was I rejected the podcast?

                 Hello,
Why was I rejected the podcast, once all links are working (feed and episodes)?
    http://feeds.feedburner.com / TrafficRadioStation
    How to Recover it again?

There is a technical issue: the URLs for your media files in the 'enclosure' tags download the file when opened in a browser, instead of playing them. This means they are being served incorrectlhy on the server - I don't know how this works with FeedProxy. The feed works OK when subscribed to manually in iTunes, but I don't know whether the Store page would handle this.
But a strong possibility for rejection is the actual content of your episodes. I've not listened to anything, but it looks as if they consist of commercially available recordings played as a 'DJ mix'. This is a breach of copyright unless you have obtained either specific written permission from the copyright owners or a 'podcast licence' (only available in certain countries, possibly only the USA).
The Store will certainly remove any podcast it notices which is playing copyrighted material.

  • Why does Firefox have to beg for money, like the winos on the street ?

Why does firefox have to beg for money, like winos on the street ? If I had the money to donate, I gladly would, but I'm disabled on a fixed income and cannot afford to give money to anyone. I ran my own websites a few times, and never once begged for money to pay for my websites. Do you think everyone just sits back on their stack of cash, watching for any vultures that come around ? I've used firefox for 10 years, but if I'm no longer wanted, I will leave. Should I skip a few meals so I can send you 10 dollars, or cancel my doctor's visit for next week ? Maybe I could rake some yards in the neighborhood and make some extra money ? Wait, I can't walk but about 5 minutes, darn ! I had already dropped firefox for this very reason, and I thought the begging would be over, but it's still here ! Even microsoft and google recommend firefox ! It's a great browser, but I just can't afford to give money away. Maybe I could stop feeding my cat, I've heard they can survive without a human's help ? One of us would likely start eating the other ! Here kitty kitty !

You don't have to donate - just ignore the request and move on with your day.

  • Why does Firefox 18.0.1 try to see the .m4b I'm trying to download as an .mp4?

I'm trying to download an .m4b (Apple Audiobook format) file on my Macbook Pro (OS 10.8.2) with Firefox 18.0.1. When I do, Firefox opens a new tab like it's going to download the file, but then loads the m4b into what I assume is the Quicktime plugin for Firefox and starts playing it. When I mouse over the tab, the tip that pops up says:
    "filename.m4b (video/mp4 Object)"
I tried it on my iMac (OS 10.8.2) running Firefox 17.0.1 and the file downloaded correctly as an m4b. What gives?

In the Applications category of the Preferences window, check if you have an entry for ''video/mp4''. If it's there, make sure it's not set to “Use QuickTime Plug-in (in Firefox)”.

  • Program Files (x86) directory invalid during XI R2 install.  How to change?

I am receiving an error during a BusinessObjects Enterprise XI R2 install that the target ../Program Files (x86)/.. directory is invalid due to the "()".  I understand that this is a 32bit app and not compatible with the (x86) directory, but the path is greyed out during the install and cannot be modified.  I recall seeing some time back there is a registry key that can be changed for this default install directory - does anyone know what this is or how I can get around this problem and install the package to the regular Program Files directory?
    Thanks

RTM unfortunately.  Do you happen to know if the SP4 full build is the version currently available for download on the support site in 2 separate files?  I am downloading now, hopefully this is what I need.
    Thanks

  • Why does Firefox offer themes and gadgets to personalize the webpage, and then make it impossible to use after upgrading Firefox? Can or will these lost functions ever be restored?

The functions designed to modify and/or create a personalize page has ceased to function since upgrading to Firefox versions 4 & 5. No trouble shooting info has been provided to indicate a correction for this problem.

Hi musicfan,<br />Sorry you are having problems with Firefox. Maybe you should have asked earlier and we could have fixed it.
Reading your comments I do not see that rolling back to an insecure Firefox 22 will actually help you much. You are probably best using IE, unless you have also damaged that.

Most others will not be having such problems. We are now able to say that with confidence because after developers missed a regression in Firefox 4 telemetry was introduced so that data was obtained. It may be an idea to turn on your telemetry, if you have not already done so, and decide to stick with Firefox.

  • Why does Firefox (3.6.12) try to access the Net as it starts, but before the Ffx window first shows & once more when the window opens, if I've set updates to manual and "about:blank" as my home page?

I click to load Firefox (3.6.12). The Comodo firewall warns me that Firefox is trying to connect to the Net. I block it, because I've not asked Firefox to do that, at that point. Then, when the Firefox window opens, the firewall warns me, again, that Firefox is trying to access the internet. I block it then, too. Use of Firefox is completely uncompromised by me doing this - that much is clear.
Surely, if I have turned off automatic updates and use "about:blank" as my browser startup page, Firefox has no need, and no place, attempting to connect to the internet until I ask it to, by clicking a bookmark in the Bookmarks toolbar, or until I type a URL into the address bar.
What is Firefox trying to do? and how can I stop it from trying to do it?

  • Why does Firefox leak memory after. I do the same operations in Firefox and Safari, Firefox in some cases uses over 500 MB of RAM, Safari uses about 50 MB

After opening and closing 5 windows in Firefox and Safari, at rest Firefox still claimed (approx.) 500MB of real memory, Safari return all memory and claimed only (approx.) 50MB at rest (all windows closed). My laptop starts over heating when browsing just simple information pages in Firefox. This still happens after updating to the latest browser.

  • Why would firefox be using so much memory that the application itself freezes to the point where I have to force the program to end?

For the past few days, I've been doing research for a presentation that I am doing for college. As I've been using Firefox, the program freezes to the point where I have to force the program to terminate. I have a computer with 8 gigs of ram and an i5 quad core processor running at 2.8 ghz. There are no viruses or spyware on the system, and there isn't anything else running. There are no addons applied to my browser, and no personas. There should be no memory issues to the point where an internet browser would freeze this badly.

  • Why is Firefox using 50%+ of cpu activity and the longest time

Checking Task Manager after frequent slowdowns and almost cont. disk activity ,I found in a 100h system idle time the highest user is firefox at 4h and 1.2million I/O writes. This happens after periods of not using the machine (left on) . At times it hogs all the resources even after just waking up the display with screen rewrites taking seconds and with no requested net activity. This can also happen in the background.

  • Why does Firefox open with both my Homepage and the 'Welcome to Firefox' tab, and how can I suppress the 'Welcome to Firefox' page?

When Firefox loads, both my Homepage and the 'Welcome to Firefox' pages open. How do I suppress the 'Welcome to Firefox' page/tab?

    Hi Sean,
    Try this:
    # Type about:config in the address bar
    # Click ''I'll be careful, I promise'' if prompted
    # In the Filter input field type ''startup''
    # Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
    # Delete the text string and click ''OK''
    # Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
It's a bit more "technical" than most people want, but it should work.
