Why were some photos downloaded into trash?

When I downloaded photos from a Compact Flash into Aperture, some of them went into trash.   I tried moving them to my library and even though I could see the photos (with an arrow and a hazard sign in the corner) under the adjustments tab where the histogram should be, it said "image not found".
I then tried downloading the pictures with the Canon Software and was successful.
So I tried downloading just three of the pictures (that did not originally download with Aperture but did with Canon Software) again with Aperture and got "Import Items Completed with Errors" and they went in the Trash.
Interestinly, when I open the compactflash on my computer to see the files - those photos that did not load into Aperture did not show on the card.
I can't figure out if it is a problem with the CompactFlash, my Canon 7D, or Aperture.    Any ideas???

In addition to what Leonie said, I would empty your trash, if any, in the Dock icon, then mount this card by way of a card reader, and then see, in the Finder, if there is any trash associated with the volume represented by the card.  I am thinking some action may have deleted images as seen when mounted on the computer, but have not been totally removed from the card's space.
I have never experimented with this, as I never delete from a card on the computer, but only via a new Formatting in the camera.  I recommend you do that as so as possible after you have satisfied yourself that you have captured whatever has been on the card.

I assume you have Photostream on, correct?
In order for the photos to be moved into Photostream, you must exit the camera app, and be on a wifi connection.  Both of these criteria must be met before the sync occurs.

Hi, i have deleted accidentally some photos and the trash is empty. How can I recover them? Urgentlyyy

Which trash is empty? If it's the iPhoto trash, check the System Trash, as files deleted from iPhoto 11 go there. Assuming that's also empty then you have exactly two options:
    1. Restore from your back up
    or
    2. Use a file recovery app such as File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

  • Putting photos etc into trash does not clear space on hard drive

When I move photos etc into the trash there is no increase in available space on the hard drive.

If you've installed third-party software called "Disk Drill," I suggest you remove it according to the developer's  instructions. If you prefer to keep the software, refer to the developer for support. Otherwise, see below.
For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Weg Gallery: Some photos downloadable, some not

    Dear Forum,
I have an odd one here: I have a (password protected) Web Gallery I regularly update with new photos. It now turns out that all images I uploaded up to around a week ago are downloadable, the latest ones consistently aren't. I would like them all to be downloadable.
No settings have changed on the one computer (Macbook Pro) that I use to publish the web gallery. I have seen similar threads on this topic within this forum, but with no answer so far. I have followed one recommendation, to change the Web Gallery setting to make all images not-downloadable, synchronize, and make them downloadable again. No difference! I have the latest iPhoto version.
The consequence of this nuisance is that other iPhoto libraries which subscribe to this web gallery only get a small image downloaded (320x211 pixels).
Am I right in assuming this is an iPhoto bug? I cannot see any other setting I can change, and there is no distinction whatsoever between the photos - all are taken by the same camera over the past 3 weeks. There is no reason that I see for this sudden change in behavior.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

I've seen this too, but even with non-updated galleries - some photos are downloadable, some not.
I think the servers may be unstable or there are errors in updating the status of individual images.
I suspect it's a 'bug' of sorts but I've no idea if it's iPhoto or the server end.
Also there seems to be an issue with uploaded 'originals' getting re-sized. My Canon photos are 3504 wide but get changed to 3054 wide for download (heigh scaled to preserve aspect ratio). These originals will be 1/6th of the size of library originals.
It's not ideal but another poster mentioned that deleting the web gallery then re-publishing corrected things - not an ideal solution but may be worth a shot - maybe you could create an album which gets published as a web gallery to allow for easy updates of a gallery from different events.

  • Why is my photo downloader dialogue box pixelated?

I have noticed recently that when I take images off a CF or SD card and use Bridge. The photo downloader dialogue box is not very high quality. The text is pixelated and the over all graphic isn't very high quality. I seem to only notice in this section of Bridge. I am working on a retina display mac book pro so it just seems weird when I open that dialogue box it is not very high quality. Is there something wrong or is this normal and the way it is supposed to be?

A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.

  • Why do some photos display with a  black border round them?

I have just bought a Gen 2 ipod touch and have loaded several albums of photos on to it. Some of these photos are displayed with a black border round them and seem to be almost square instead of filling the screen, whilst others are shown in full widescreen aspect. They are taken with the same camera and I have not cropped them in iphoto so I am wondering why they are not filling the screen? Are they not being optimised properly or is there some setting somewhere I am missing?

Old Toad asserts  "This [border problems] is new territory"
With all due respect, Old Toad, this problem was extensively documented (with examples) in the question of April 22: "screen aspect ratio is wrong in Photos slideshows".
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7007657
Indeed, you yourself were one of the commenters on that thread.
Present status At the present time, no fix or workaround is known for border-related issues in Photos.

  • Why does some artwork embed into the file, but not others?

    Hey everyone.
I'm running iTunes 11.3.1. I'm incredibly obsessive about having organised files and one thing in particular I want is album artwork embedded into the music file itself, not just on iTunes. The problem I have is that the artwork will embed for some, and not for others - even if I use the exact same methods:
I use the following for getting HQ covers: http://bendodson.com/code/itunes-artwork-finder/index.html
I will then click on the high resolution version, copy it to clipboard, command-i to get info of the individual tracks and manually paste the cover into every track on the album. When I then go into Finder to see if it has embedded, I find that for one album it has worked perfectly; but although I use the exact same method, it won't work for another album even if they're exactly the same file type.
(I know I can save myself time and select all the tracks, command-i and paste the artwork to do it in one go - but I find I get just as much of a mixed bag. I.e. sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.)
I am literally at the end of my tether and I can't figure out what I need to do differently, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have encountered exactly the same problem and frustration :-)
Although I can't offer a definitive reason why, I did notice that the problem tracks typically had a higher resolution image attached in iTunes. I have used Preview to reduce the resolution to 600 x 600 (standard iTunes size) and it worked.
Now, I have no idea if it was the resolution or the fact that I was re-saving a fresh version of the JPG (which may have stripped out whatever was causing the problem), but the process of tweaking the file to 600 x 600 and re-saving has worked for me.

  • Why are some photos blurry on iweb?

When I drop in crisp clear photos, they instantly look blurry, especially when I use the edges to reduce or enlarge the photo - even the smallest amount.
I am using jpegs with a standard res of 640x480 - I have not encountered any problems in other applications when dropping in photos or making minor adjustments in the image size (through dragging) - why here? I am pulling the photos from ones I already have stored on my idisc (since they are already a smaller file size from the originals in my iphoto library).
Anyone have any suggestions? I would like my web site to look as polished and professional as possible and blurry photos isn't helping that goal.
    Thanks,
    Bob

I am getting blurry pictures too. I can't understand why. I edited the images in Photoshop, saved them as jpg's about 5X6 inches at 100 dpi, imported to iPhoto, dragged the images to my pages. Resulting images are not clear. Even after using the adjustment tool, some do not get sharp. I have tried sizing images to various sizes and resolutions without success. I have been customizing pages. Someone at Apple said that it must have something to do with the converter. I don't know. I just know that my originals are tack sharp and my pictures on iWeb leave a lot to be desired. Anyone have a cure for this? I am on an eMac running OSX 10.3.9. My work is published in B&W magazine this month and my web site has to be clear. See my web site for examples. http://www.RussAndMarciaMartin.com Some look good while others do not. If you look around, you will find blurry ones. I don't know why some are clear and others aren't.

  • Photo downloads into iPhoto

When I do a download from my Sony Memory Stick to iPhoto my photos are imported in reverse order from the sequence they were taken on the camera. I cannot run a slide show since this puts the photos in reverse order. Can anyone tell me how to import the photos in the order they were taken on the camera? Or how to change the sequence in iPhoto without manually moving each photo once they have been downloaded?

    mikefla:
Go to the View menu and under the Sort Photo submenu select Ascending. That will change the order in the library. If you already have a slideshow that's reversed from what you want, select all of the thumbnails in the thumbnail tray and drag the first slide to the far right side of the window, waiting until the slider bar completes its left to right move, and the release. That will reverse the order in the slideshow.
You can experiment with the View menu options to get what you want exactly.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why do some photos not appear in the book I am creating?

I am composing two books at the moment and will want to order them shortly.
The problem I have is that, sometimes the photos do not appear when you drag them into the book - it just shows an exclamation mark. However if you look at the layout in the top section, it appears.
The photos not showing are either very high-res digital pictures from a professional photographer or scanned photos, but the scanned ones are of similar (OK) quality and identical resolution to others which are visible.
I am worried what will happen when I go to order the book - will these pictures not upload?
Does anyone know why this is happening or a fix?

    Jim Jam
sometimes the photos do not appear when you drag them into the book - it just shows an exclamation mark.
The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Why are some photo events missing when I synch my iPad with the new iMac?

    Very confused user here.
I've just bought the new IMac, When I connected my iPad2 to the iMac and opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked to import photos. This proceeded, but when I checked it became clear that not all the events had been imported, even though iPhoto was saying that all the photos had been imported. There doesn't appear to be any reason why certain events have been missed - no difference in title, or date. How can I make sure all the photos are imported?

If the iPad works like the iPhone you can move photos into the Camera Roll as shown here:
Then from there it should sync to your Mac. That's how I got the screenshot above to my iMac and into this post.
If you have an iCloud account and Photo Stream enabled on both your iMac and iPad new photos to the Camera Roll will automatically be synced with your iMac and imported into iPhoto as long as you have the iPhoto/Photo Stream preferences set this way:
Of course this is assuming the iPad functions similarly to the iPhone in this regard and I should think it would.

  • Removing Photos downloaded into iphone

I just purchased the 3G iphone. We downloaded a few photos into the album from our computer (thru itunes) and synced them. (We are using a PC with XP). Now we want to remove those photos of the phone. I see you can do it if you had taken the photo thru the iphone. But can't find a way to remove them via the iphone or the itunes.

Remove the photo from the folder that you linked to when you set the preference "synchronize photos from" and update the iPhone For example, if the phone is getting the pictures from the folder "My Pictures," remove or delete them from My Pictures and sync your iPhone.
Here's a simple "How To" on downloading and managing photos from a folder on your hard disk to an iPod or iPhone:
1 Create a folder on your hard drive to hold the photos you want on your phone or iPod. Call it iPhone or iPod Photos for example
2 Drag the photos you want from your usual picture folder into the folder you just created
2 Open iTunes, select your iPhone/iPod in the iTunes Source list.
3 Click the Photos tab and select “Synch photos from.”
4 Choose “Choose Folder” from the pop-up menu and select the iPhone/iPod photos folder you created.
5 When you want to change what photos are on the iPhone/iPod just add or remove the photos from the folder you have made and syncronise the the iPhone/iPod

  • Why were my photos erased after the update?

I updated my iMac to OSX Mavericks a few weeks ago, and when it got restarted I figured all my photos are gone from iPhoto! My photo stream got back after a while, but all my videos are gone. Why did this happen? Are they stored in someplace else?

No, it's not the same for other macs. I would recommend (hindsight being 20/20) to make a backup of your system. Time Machine is a guardian, you can't predict when data loss is going to happen, so always being ready for it is your best bet.
As for photos disappearing, did you save your library on an external hard drive? If so, iPhoto could have lost its "link" with that library. Try launching the library (open external, double click on it).
If not, open iPhoto with the "option" key held down. Do you see any other libraries in this list other than your "default"? If yes, open them up, let's see if your images are in there.

  • Why do some photos turn out smaller in size after transferring the photo library from another Mac?

Photo size in iPhoto smaller after transferring from a previous Macbook.

    Hi, LakeLadyWes -
This may not be it, but just thinking, your old Mac and new MacBook - your new MacBook is most likely retina, and your old Mac was not... Because of the higher pixel density of the retina, photos that were larger on your less pixel density older Mac would have appeared larger than they do on the new retina MacBook.
It is something I had to get used to myself... I have my 15" MacBook, and a second external 27" monitor that I use for photo editing ... On my MacBook retina, the screen is 2800 x 1800 px, for a 220+ dpi resolution, whilst my 2nd monitor is like an older iMac before they went retina also - 2560 x 1440 px @ just under 109 dpi, in other words, half the pixel density and resolution of my MacBook, so images take up more space, and are larger on my 2nd monitor, while they are more compressed and smaller on my MacBook.
So, your photos still may be the same size, but because of the retina screen, they just appear smaller.  Again, this may not be it, but just something you may think about too.
