Why when I upload a raw image to Aperture

Why when I upload a raw image to Aperture (23.5mb) and make enhancements to it, then when I export it the size drops drastically (2.1mb)?

This totally depends on your export settings. RAW files are minimally compressed, JPEG files are very compressed. What output size are you using, and what JPEG compression settings? Note 8-10 for JPEG compression is the sweet spot between quality and filesize. I personally use 10.

  • Why when I open my raw files into lightroom, colors are different from my camera's preview?

    Ciao,
I have a problem... maybe this can be a stupid question but anyway.. I would like to know the reason why when I open a raw image in lightroom, for a second I see the right colors/tone/contrast that i see when i look at the same images on my camera and soon after the word "Loading" I see the raw files with different colors.
    Why this happens???
    Before "Loading" and --> after
    Thank you so much

    Hey Giuseppe
I have a similar problem but the cause may be different from yours. I shoot a Canon 6D and as far as I know no one with the 5D MKIII has my issue, but maybe you could look into it.
Canon's Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop CC, as well as Lightroom CC, is automatically down converting my CR2 RAW files from 14 bit color depth to 8 bit color depth. This is screwing up my colors, contrast, gradients, etc quite a bit when trying to process RAW files in Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC.
You can read my thread here:
Banding due to automatic downconverting of RAW files to 8 bit
You might want to check and see if your RAW files are actually being processed in 16 bit color depth. There is a possibility that they are being down converted automatically for some reason.
The bit depth in Lightroom for RAW files is supposed to be 16 bit but when opening my files it just converts it down.
Try downloading Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4
    Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EOS 5D Mark III
Use that software to process a RAW photo and convert to a 16 bit TIFF. I know this software truly gives you a 16 bit depth image. Then compare the result side to side with what you're seeing in Lightroom.
If you are having this issue, I have not yet found a way to process RAW CR2 files in ACR or Lightroom and maintain 16 bit depth.
If you are batch processing to JPEGs it probably doesn't matter, but my issue is that it is down converting BEFORE exporting and thus any edits I do become much more destructive on my 8 bit image than they would if I was editing a 16 bit image. I have to be able to keep things in 16 bit up until the point they go to the printer.
Sorry, this may not help you at all, it looks like there could just be a difference in White Balance, but I figured I'd throw my two cents out there and maybe you could see if this is actually what is happening for you, and hopefully eventually Adobe could potentially fix this bug.

Have you checked your "Import" settings for "Raw&Jpeg" pairs in the "Import" panel?
You can set Aperture to import raw, jpeg, or raw&jpeg.
If you imported Raw&Jpeg, but have set Aperture to use the Jpeg as original, you will see the imported image as Jpeg image, not as a raw image, even if the raw has also been imported. You can switch between Raw and Jpeg originals for selected images from the Photos menu:
Photos > Use Raw as original.

Why when I double click an image in "pictures" does it always open into Elements 10?

Only if you set Elements as the default application e.g. for opening all jpeg files.
You can make file associations via the control panel.

  • Is there any way to invert raw images in Aperture.

I am "scanning" a lot of old slides and negatives with a SLR camera using an old professional slide duplicator.
It is very fast and effective with slides and I have tried with negatives. It goes very well except for I have to invert the negative image in Photoshop and even in 16 bit theres at lot less quality left when I save it back in Aperture for the last color correction.
The solution would be to be able to do the inversion from negative to positive image i full raw quality inside Aperture.
Does anyone know if there is at "trick" to invert the raw-image in Aperture?

There is not.  Inversion is more a rewrite than an adjustment -- best done between the scan and importing, imho.

  • Importing Photoshop RAW images into Aperture

When I import Photoshop RAW images that I have made adjustments to, into my Aperture library, they show up as the original RAW files and not with my adjustments. Is there a way to get the RAW adjustments imported as well.
The only reason I need to import them into Aperture is to post them in a web gallery. Or is there a way to create a ME web gallery directly from Photoshop files? How about creating a ME web gallery directly from Lightroom? Anybody have a clue?)
(Btw, in attemtpting to research this topic, I find I am totally unable to do a search of the discussions. Even with a search word like "Aperture", I get no messages. Not matter what search word I enter I get no messages found. ???)
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Thanks for the reply Allen.
I am saving them all as TIFFS now. I was just trying to avoid that time-consuming step. I do not really need them as TIFFS right now. It is to show edited RAW files to a client. Later, when selections are made, I would save that much smaller number of images as TIFFS. But it seems that there is no other way to import the RAW files with the edits into Aperture.
I used to create all of my web albums for clients in PS. But once I got a .mac account, I love and prefer the look of the .mac web galleries. But of course that necessitated importing all my PS files into either iPhoto (not an option) or Aperture. But can these PS web galleries be exported to a .mac web gallery?
    Thanks!

  • Why is bridge not converting raw images to dng during upload after re-installation even though I have manually selected it to do so?

I have exhausted all options after re-install to get bridge uploader to convert my raw images to dng and need help!

    Hi Jeff,
    Thanks for following up.
Slowly I am learning about what is going on with my problem. I need to first further clarify my problem for you. I am new to both my iMac and its Version 10 of Photoshop. When I bought the CD set I thought that the term "premiere" referred to both Adobe Photoshop (stills) and Premiere (movies). Now I understand that it only refers to the movies. So, my problem rests with Photoshop. As just mentioned have just acquired my iMac and it does not seem to have a screen shot application. However, would you please take a look at the Tools panel in Photoshop? The icons for the brush tool, the eraser tool, and the smart brush tool all have a tiny black triangle in the lower right corner of the icon. It is my understanding that when I click on the eraser tool and should see three more icons pop up. They do not. So what is wrong? That is the source of my frustration with the product. I can't duplicate some of the instructions that I see in my book.
Again, thank you for your follow up.
    David

  • Why won't my edited RAW images show after a LR re-install onto a new Hard Drive?

Hi there. Recently my hard drive took a (hike) and crashed - data may or may not be recoverable (Geeks are working on that), and I needed to reinstall my CS5 and Lightroom software to a new hard drive (I had to buy a new one). All of my RAW photos are stored on an external drive and were not harmed, thankfully.  Here is my dilemma. Most of the presets I used also went crashing with that hard drive, (yes I believe they were backed up but also on that hard drive...stupid I know-trust me I know!!) but most of them were the free ones from the adobe recommended users on this site. I actually found many of my favorites still posted on the Adobe site and re-downloaded and installed the presets I'd been using the past year and a half, and imade sure those presets were housed properly in their folder via Preferences in Lightroom. Great. I can continue on with my work. WRONG! When I went to go import a recent shoot that I had already edited, it imported the RAW files but none of the previous edits I had worked on for these photos were showing up...it was as if I didn't even touch them and they came right from my camera. What in the world is going on? I'm baffled...and freaking out as I have thousands upon thousands of edited shoots in RAW, and I fear that none of the edits and enhancements made to those photos are going to be present and I'll have to start over. Please tell me that all of my last 2 years of editing photos are still with the RAW files?!!!
I found a deal on a an HP Intell Core i7 processor) 2 TB hard drive tower, so I ended up needing to install the 64 bit versions of CS5 and Lightroom 3.6.
I did test out the RAW (.NEF) file in Photoshop CS5 and my edited RAW image came up "correctly" - so I know that the information is still with the RAW image...I just need it to work and show in lightroom, as it is easier to export the files to the sizes I need them to be.
Please be kind in your replies...I appreciate any help/guidance I can get on this. Plus the photos I need are for Seniors graduating in a few months here so you can imagine the panic mode is just a bit higher than normal. Many thanks.

The default location for the backups created by Lightroom on exit is in the same folder as the catalog itself (i.e. that would be on the same faulty drive). It is, however, possible to redirect those backups to a different destination, such as a different hard drive.....but only you know if you did that or not. Do you have any other backups, e.g. drive level backups?
Just to be clear, if you are importing afresh into a new catalog from Raw files that do have XMP sidecar files, you should see the final edited state from the previous catalog, but you won't see the individual history steps that got you there (as that's one of the things that are not included when you write XMP data from within Lightroom). If there is no XMP sidecar, you'll just get the original OOC image.

  • Blurred S-RAW images in Aperture 3.3.2

Beginner here so please have patience if I'm doing something stupidly wrong :
I downloaded some holiday photos from my new EOS7D into Aperture 3.3.2 (latest update) running on OSX10.8, the images are canon S-RAW format which I believe is supported by this version of aperture. The images imported fine but when I view them in viewer they are very blurry. So much so that I thought the camera or lens were at fault or that I was viewing a low resolution version of the photo. All the photo's exhibit the same problem but some are more obvious than others.
To check my equipment I imported the same photos direct from the camera into Canon's own Digital Photo Professional. The images are pin sharp.
Any suggestions to what I could be doing wrong :
    1. I don't think I'm importing low res images from the camera into Aperture, the aperture image info says the images are RAW (but not S-RAW), and 13MB in size which seems to be correct for S-RAW.
    2. Could my version of Aperture be set to view low res or JPG versions of the S-RAW images, if so how do I change it.
    3. Are there any known issues with S-RAW (CR2) files and aperture ?
I believe this is a new problem, I looked back at some S-RAW images from my old 40D (same L series 16-35mm lens) viewed in aperture and they look fine
    Any help most welcome.
    Mike B.

    Kirby,
Plenty of testing but even more confusion I'm afraid :
    1. updated OSX to the latest version 10.8.1, no change to the blurred effect.
    2. updated the 7D firmware to latest version 2.0, no change to the blurred effect.
took some new photos in various formats and imported using the new updated versions :
    3. new photo's in RAW, blurred effect dissapeared. Images from DPP viewed at 100% were identical when compared to Aperture at 100%
    4. new photos in M-RAW, blurred effect was present quite noticeable when images were compared at 100% size.
    5. photo's in S-RAW, blurred effect was very obvious at all zoom levels especially 100%
    6. imported the same photo's into iphoto 9.3, iphoto mimicked Aperture ie :
RAW photos were identical in iphoto and DPP, but M-RAW and S-RAW both viewed blurred in iphoto compared to Canon DPP. This one threw me, I had expected iphoto to view correctly in all instances.
If iphoto hadn't given me the same problem I was going to attempt to re-install Aperture (not quite sure how), but if both iphoto and aperture give the same results, I suspect something more fundamental is going wrong.
    Mike B.
I tried getting a screen grab for you, I'm not sure if it will work, image on the left is DPP at 100%, image on the right is AP3 at 100%, I cannot get the image on the right to look any better than this in AP3.

  • Viewing RAW images in Aperture

I cannot find a similar discussion so I'll post this.
I cannot view RAW files in Aperture since the 3.5 update to 10.9.  The files import correctly and then when I try to view them in the viewer they turn into a scrambled mess.  I have created a new Aperture library and still the problem persists.  Is anyone else having this problem and are there any fixes?
    Thanks

    Chris,
    try two things:
use the command "Photos > Reprocess Raw" from the menu bar
and use the command "Photos > Generate Thumbnails"
It looks like the thumbnails of your imported images are broken.

and then when I try to view them in the viewer they turn into a scrambled mess
Is your scrambled mess red and blue? Have you perhaps enabled "View > Highlight hot and Cold areas" or "onscreen proofing" with an unsuitable color profile?
Or any presets interfering? Raw decode preset, or an effects preset in the Import panel?

  • Help!!! Just imported 190 of RAW images to APerture 3 images

Help! I just imported 190 new images of RAW photos. There is this message that says This photo was adjusted using an earlier version on Apples RAW processing. The problem is the processing ruined my images. They are very dark with a greenish tint. The strange thing is that it did it to about 90% of my images. I was shooting in continous mode so I have several images which are very similar. One would been processed with the note this image... and the next one would be fine. How do I get my images back to normal. There is a reprocess buttom, but it does not seem to have any effect on the image. I just wont my image back to normal. How they are now they are terrible. I usually don't make huge adjustments to my images only minor changes. I would be grateful for any help. SInce these are images that are priceless. Family vacation pictures to National Parks that we probably wont visit again in our lifetime...

One more thing... When I look at my images in browser mode they look ok. It only when I open the single image that it changes.. For a few seconds it looks fine and then buff... it changes to a dark greensih tint...

  • Working with RAW images in Aperture

I shoot with a Canon DSLR in RAW. I notice that certain adjustments when applied to a RAW file have no effect ie. sharpen, edge sharpen, noise reduction and maybe more.
I suspect that these adjustments are applicable to either a TIFF of JPEG file.
Could you please comment as to the best workflow to get the optimum end result from RAW files?
I Googled "processing raw files in Aperture" and got nothing useful.
    Thanks in advance
    kent

    Hi Kent.
Read through this and the links and some of the links' links.
    The choice is:
    - use the computer in your camera, via your camera interface, camera to produce JPGs, or
    - record sensor data to RAW files, and use RAW converters and image development programs such as Aperture (or Lightroom) running on your computer hardware.
RAW generally starts in a fairly "uninflected" state, and always gives you maximum latitude for development.
    JGP is faster.
Imho, the only reason to shoot JPG is either that you are producing snapshots or you are under professional deadlines.
    Added:
The best RAW workflow:  record RAW only.  Import into Aperture.  Develop each Image to your needs.  You may wish to change the RAW Fine Tuning defaults, but the need for this is rare.  More likely, you'll wish to develop and save some Adjustment Presets (collections of Adjustments you can apply together).
