Why will iTunes erase everything on my iPod to update to iOS 5?

Does Apple not realize some people (like me) manually manage our iPods, and our music is on multiple computers? I'm worried I'll lose EVERYTHING if I update...help!

How do I know which person to believe?
Susan Howard says she Manually Manages her iPod and upgraded to iOS 5 without losing anything.
I Manually Manage my iPhone 4 and I'm afraid of upgrading to iOS 5 and losing my music.  I don't necessarily have every song on my PC in the same location anymore or added to iTunes.
Lllaass, are you basically saying that unlike any previous iOS updates, the iOS 5.0 update will erase, destroy, and lose any Manually Managed songs/media?  What is your opinion of Susan Howard's report?
Why would Apple offer the Manually managed option if it puts your data at such extreme risk of loss?  I've been manually managed on my iPhone 4 since iOS 4.0.2 and now I'm on 4.3.3 and never lost any Manually managed data.
PS: NOTICE I KEEP TALKING ABOUT MANUALLY MANAGED.  FOR ANYBODY WHO READS THIS WITH POOR READING COMPREHENSION, THE FACT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT MANUALLY MANAGED IS *THE CRUCIAL DISTINCTION*. Yes, I know Automatically synced music will simply be resync'ed after the update.  This thread concerns MANUALLY MANAGED MUSIC.

  • Why will iTunes not sync to my iPod after installing the latest update for iTunes?

Hi I have a Macbook and I just downloaded the latest update for iTunes and when I plugged in my iPod to sync I keep getting and error message. How do I fix this problem?

I haven't done one of those for a while. But the following troubleshooting document might still be worth a shot:

  • When restoring your ipod touch, will it erase everything on it?

    hello everyone
I was wondering if restoring your ipod touch will erase everything on it because my computer does not seem to be recongizing my ipod nor is itunes. And I was afraid that if I restored my ipod that everything will be gone from it. The reason I am worried about this is that I have important notes that i have typed on it and a lot of aps that I do not want to put back on (too much work).

If you restore to original settings it will erase everything on your iPod Touch.
Check out some of the troubleshooting documents about the iPod not being recognized in Windows before restoring. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
If you must restore you can recover back to the last backup created when you last synced your iPod.

  • I bought an ipod touch at a pawn shop and it has account registered to another person on itunes. i was wondering since i started my own account with itunes and tried to sync the music and other apps to my account would it erase everything on the ipod

i bought an ipod touch at a pawn shop and it has account and registered to another person on it and i don't know the password. and i started my own itunes account on the computer and when i connect the ipod to the computer the other persons account shows up to be synced to the computer and when i hit the sync button it says that the ipod can only be synced to one library at a time. then it says that it would erase his library contents and all other apps in order for it to be synced to my account. so i was wondering if there is anyway to sync all the music and other apps to my account with out it erasing everything on the ipod.

Do what iTunes is telling you to do.  Wehn you purchased the iPod the apps and other media do not transfer to you.  Then are permently locked/lienced only to the person who purchased them.  Using the stuff on the iPod is stealing.

  • I just bought new computer and redownloaded itunes. Will it erase everything on my iphone when plug into the new computer?

I just bought new computer and redownloaded itunes. Will it erase everything on my iphone when plug into the new computer?

    Yes, it will.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • My Mac has recently been restored in an Apple Store. I'm wanting to backup my iPhone 4 so I can use that data on my new iPhone 5. Though as my apple ID and everything has been reset to Factory Settings, if I plug my iphone in, will it erase everything?

Okay, so I got Apple to restore my whole Mac operating system, and it obviously reset all my settings and computer to factory settings. As I now have an iPhone 5 and wanting to backup my iPhone 4, I can't do this as my Mac does not have any recorded backup's from before as they were deleted in the restoration. So i want to plug my iPhone 4 in to back it up. The main question is if I plug my iPhone 4 in, will it erase everything? and if so, how do i prevent this from happening as I have very important data on my iPhone 4 i can't lose.
    Thanks
    Georgia!

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    Also
If you have Find My iPhone enabled, you can use Remote Wipe to erase the contents of your device. If you have been using iCloud to back up, you may be able to restore the most recent backup to reset the passcode after the device has been erased.

If you do a restore on the ipod, it only affects the ipod.  Everything on the ipod is erased, but itunes and everything in itunes and on your computer will still be there.

  • Will itunes erase my iphone if I set it up as new?

I've had my iphone for a while and am just now connecting it to itunes to load music.  I've got SMS, apps and photos on it already.  When I connect to iTunes, it asks if I want to set up as new or restore from backuo (no backups).
If I set it up as new will iTunes erase the apps, SMS, and photos?

I'm sorry you think it's a silly question.  I did read the guide and it doesn't say how to set it up as a new device without deleting everything.  Next time you find a "silly" question maybe you can just move on so it doesn't offend you instead of judging without helping.
    To everyone else
Thanks for your advice and links, unfortunately nothing seems to answer my question.
    Here's my situation:
    1) Bought a new iPhone from Verizon last month
    2) The iphone activated without me having to connect to iTunes
    3) In the interim, I took photos, downloaded apps, texted friends, etc
    4) I wanted to load music, so I plugged it into iTunes
    5) iTunes wants me to set up as a new phone or restore from backup, but the only backup file is from an iPod I have
    6) iTunes doesn't give me the choice of backing up my iPhone (when I right-click on the device all I get is "eject" and "restore from backup")
I also tried checking "Prevent iPads, iPhones, and iPods from syncing automatically" in iTunes
I just want to put music on my phone but can't seem to get past iTunes wanting to set it up and I'm afraid it'll delete everything if I do.
    iPhone 4
    iOS 5.1
    iTunes 10.6.3.25
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks!

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar

If I restore my iphone will it erase everything on my phone?

Depends on how you restore. if you perform a sync first, to create a current backup, you can then restore from that backup. If you restore as a new device, all data on your phone will be erased.
