Why will my iphone 5 not send or receive picture messages?

I have turned off the imessages and also synced it with itunes as was advised by my mobile network, in addition to turning the phone off and on again but still will not work. Any suggestions?

Does your carrier's plan allow MMS?
MMS is a standard way to send messages that include multimedia content to and from mobile phones. It extends the core SMS (Short Message Service) capability that allowed exchange of text messages only up to 160 characters in length.
Some accounts require additonal services (i.e. cost more) to make MMS supported on a device. It all depends on your carrier.

I know of other people having the same problem, with different versions of the phone and different carriers.

Friend has the iPhone 4s with Verizon.

Check settings/message and make sure MMS is ON. Also chcek that your carrier/your plan allows sending of pictures over MMS

Recently purchased iPhone 5 and have found that I am unable to send or receive picture messages I have tried all of the suggested fixes and still will not work ! I find this extremely annoying and a bit ridiculous that considering the iPhone 5 is meant to be the best phone available to date I can't send or receive a simple mms message this needs sorted !

First does your carrier contract support MMS?
If so, is Settings > Messages > MMS Messaging turned ON?

Had the same prob w/ pics not sending. Spent hours on phone and finally got problem solved. Hopefully this will help other people experiencing this problem.
First, go Settings, then select Phone. Under "My number" it should say your current number. If it doesn't (as it didn't in my case) call sprint (dial *2 on your phone). Tell the sprint agent you would like your Name assigned to your number.
In my case, I had been added to an existing family plan. I was assigned a random new cell phone number, but then later changed it to my old existing phone number from AT&T. So if you are like me and brought your old cell phone number with you when you switched to Sprint, then this may be the issue.
When I was experiencing the problem with my pictures not sending, the wrong phone number was showing as my number on the phone (even though people could call and text me using my current number).

After upgrading to OS7 for the Iphone 5 stop sending texts. It indicates they send but they do not. I put the sim card in another Iphone still running OS6 and the messages send.

I'm having the same problem. 90% of my texts aren't being sent. This was never a problem before I updated to iOS7. Is there no solution for this?

I don't have a mainstream type (hotmail, Yahoo etc) so i need to input values manually. No problem, i do this just as i have done on many other times on many other devices (Samsung, Sony & Nokia) all without hitch. However when i comes to the iphone 4..... I am able to recieve mail without a problem but unable to send mail either by wifi or 3G.
I have spoken with my provider, to check that i have all the correct details, they confirm that i have and commented that they have had other customer with the same problem. They also insist that this an ISP issue but an Apple issue.....
So what can Apple do for me?

You won't believe this but for some reason unknown to me but my iPhone 4 has just started to send mail!....
After days and days of no joy, with exactly the same input values.....
Why?.. I don't know, i guess my iPhone must be female....lol (no offence intended but you know what i mean).

My iphone 4 will not send and receive text messages at random times. My brother has the same phone, lives in the same home and doesn't have this problem. I can't receive messages without my iphone displaying a message asking for my phone number at random times. It happens intermittently. Does anyone know why this happens? I am referring to regula text messages not imessages. I have turned it off and also updated to the most recent software. thanks

I've been an AT&T customer since they were under different names in the 90s and have never heard/seen that. I would check with them. I'd really like to see that error. To get a screenshot on the phone, press the home button and sleep/wake button together quickly and release. You will see the screen flash slightly and hear the camera shutter noise.

I may be experiencing a similar problem. My scenario is that the phone (4s) is 2 weeks old and won't power off. I hold down the button on the upper right for a few seconds, an option comes up to swipe to the right to "power off" the phone. I swipe this to the right and the phone powers off for only a few seconds and then automatically turns itself back on. This is a new problem for this phone. I was able to power it off previously, so I'm confident that it's not "pilot error". Here's something curious; if the phone is plugged into a wall charger it will power off and stay that way until disconnected from the outlet, even if the charger is still connected to the phone. I took this phone to an Apple store and the guy that helped me cleaned out the charging port claiming it was dirty and was successful at getting the phone to power off. However, by the next day the phone would not power off again. I found the dirty port thing a little curious while telling this story to a work mate and seeing his iPhones charging port clogged with plenty of visible dirt, lint and who knows what else, yet his phone works flawlessly. My charging port looks perfectly clean.

You have to tap Edit, then tap at least one photo before you get the delete button.

I have an unlocked iPhone 5 purchased directly from Apple. I am using it on StraightTalk. Everything seems to be fine except for my ability to send and receive picture messages.

StraightTalk is a prepaid service. It uses other carriers towers. They require a GSM phone and you can use a phone from AT&T or T-Mobile. I just switched over recently and for the most part it is great.

I recently purchased a new iPhone 5 on Vodafone, since I've had it I've been unable to send or receive picture messages.
I have rang Vodafone several times and each time they reset and send through the correct settings to my phone. Each time also not being successful.
I spoke with a lady from Vodafone this morning and she claimed it was a problem with the iPhone 5 model and not being able to pick up 3G aswell as the 4/4S models.
This massively disappoints me as I love the apple products and was looking forward to upgrading to the 5, now I wish I stuck with the 4S.
Will there be an update or some kind of instruction to fix this issue?

No, it doesn't have anything to do with picking up 3G at all. I sent at least 5 pictures back and forth last night on my iPhone 5 with another person who has an iPhone 5.
You do have MMS turned on? And you are connected to cell data?
