Why Windows keep detecting ip address such as 169.254.201.217/16 Both on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

Why Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 (Even Windows 7) detects ip network address 169.254.201.217/16 on my computer???
I keep getting that most of the time.

  • ACS 4.2.0 AAA-server-IP-address changing to 169.254.x.x

    Hello,
I have ACS 4.2.0.124.15   installed on a windows server 2008.
In the configuration menu : network config > AAA server , the AAA-server-IP-address change to 169.254.x.x each time I disconnect the  ethernet interface of the server.
Allthough, the ip adresse in my network connection of the windows-Lan-connection is set to static.
Whe I reconnect the ethernet interface of the server, it stays in 169.154.x.x.  And I need to reconfigure the real static adresse each time.
Do you knows this problem. Is it a way to avoid it ?

  • Why does my WRT54g sometimes give me a 169.254 address???

I have a WRT54G with firmware v1.01.0, Sep. 14, 2006. I've got an Apple G5 attached to it through one of the hardwired ethernet ports, connecting via DHCP. Once in a while, I'll get an address like 169.254.236.186 and can't connect. I have another Mac attached through a linksys wireless to ethernet bridge, and that one gets this kind of address all the time, needing to "renew DHCP lease" every couple of hours, to get a normal 192.168 address back. Can someone tell me how to fix this? Why does it give out such weird addresses? Mike Levin

When the computer fails or face the problem to get the IP from router automatically, then it will assign 169.254.x.x IP. Check the DHCP setting on wireless router and ensure you assigned big enough DHCP IP range. Also you can take a look on this wireless router configuration help..

  • DHCP Address changes to 169.254.x.x after starting to download image in PE

Our network requires the user to register their computer on the network to obtain network access.  This really isn't for security, but for tracking reasons.  This registration is done via the web on a temporary private network they get sent to if the dhcp server doesn't recognize the machine.  Once registered they can either reboot and renew their IP or just wait till the IP times out which is 2 minutes to gain access to the network with a real IP.  The tempoary network runs 2 minute lease times because of the limited number of IPs and the large turnaround we have on this network during peak times.  The real network runs 4 hour lease times mainly just because of the large turnaround of computers some buildings have been reduced to 1 hour because at 4 hours we would run out of IPs for the building.  We have a class B subnet for real IPs that all clients get with IPv4 we have to play a delicate balancing act to keep from running out.  We have in the process of implementing IPv6 which could solve some of these problems.
Back to my problem.  When a bare metal computer comes in the tech needs to load the machine.  At this point it is on the tempoary network.  The tech boots the computer into pe either cd or pxe.  Then they register the computer with configmgr and start up the correct task sequence.  Even with the 2 minute lease time the client maintains constant connectivity no matter how long the user takes to register the client.  You can wait days if you like.  Once the task sequence is chosen and it starts to apply the image it will fail.  If you push F8 and do an ipconfig it shows a 169.254.x.x ip address.  If you try to renew the IP you get An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The requested address is not valid in its context.  You can release and renew and get a new IP, but at this point the task sequence has failed with error 0x80070035.  This is a problem with all model computers even in vmware.
Has anyone experienced this problem?  I've seen other post before and the solution was always to bump up the lease time which the network guys won't and probably can't do.  It is like the IP will not auto renew while downloading an image.  This happens whether you do download as needed by task sequence or access content directly.  We are in native mode, but had the same problem in mixed.

We need to be able to image bare metal computers from anywhere on the network so using a dedicated vlan is difficult.  The requirement for network registration during the setup process has been a problem for years, but with little resolution between the techs and the network guys.
We are using public ips for clients because many years ago the routing hardware couldn't handle the NAT translations for the large number of clients.  The network guys don't have dynamic vlans configured although I think they are working on it right now they just piggyback subnets on interfaces.  Also the separate vlan for loading computers would be partially difficults since this has to work any all buildings, but because of potential routing problems they don't put a vlan in more than one building.  Each building right now has at least 1 dedicated vlan with a corresponding subnet and router.  Most of our core is 10Gb with at least 2Gb-10Gb to each building so bandwith usually isn't a problem.  The DHCP server is old, but handleing the work load just fine.
Our environment doesn't 100% match the typical corporation that runs configmgr.  We have a primary central support area and then many sub support areas that all do their own thing with special image requirements.  There is a need to keep these areas separate, but centralliy manages with minimal administrative overhead.  So to handle this we use unknown computer support just to make booting with pxe into PE.  I then use tsconfig.ini to call a modified version of the unknownsystem.hta from the configmgr sdk.  The tech doing the imaging logs into this screen and selects an image collection (the available list is based on the users rights to the collections), ad ou, custom variable settings, and machine name to add the computer to the system and recieve the appropriate os advertisements without having to add the system manually through the configmgr console.
We are still working on ways to avoid the network registration step or register the computer on behalf of the client, but would still like to figure out this problem.
    Thanks,
    Sam

  • IP address 169.254....

    Hello,
A few weeks ago, both my ethernet and my airport were working fine in my dormitory and anywhere I went.  Then in my dormitory, the ethernet suddenly stopped working as I was using it.  I didn't change any settings, I was not messing arround with anything. It just suddenly stopped!  I tried asking for help to the people in the dormitory, but being in a place where no one (in the dormitories and IT technicians) really speaks my language and I don't really speak theirs, doesn't help very much. Plus the fact that they don't really seem to be able to use and fix mac problems.  My ethernet cable connection works excllent with any other computer that is connected to it BUT with mine.
Anyways, everything is on automatic the way it should be, but it shows that the self assigned IP address is of 169.254. etc, and it cannot connect to the internet.  It happens with both ethernet and airport.  With the airport I used to connect perfectly, but now, a few places where I used to connect perfectly won't work anymore, and it shows this same IP address of 169.254.blah.blah.  It has been driving me crazy not being able to connect to the internet propperly since it is the only way I can communicate with my family.  Could anyone PLEASE help me? I am really desperate here T^T Thank You!!
    Regards,
    Omar.

Try removing all the RAM and putting in new RAM. We had a PowerMac G5 at work that couldn't connect to the Ethernet no matter what we did. I was convinced it was the motherboard/Ethernet connection failure. But after running a couple of hardware tests, it came up with bad RAM. Put in all new RAM, and lo and behold, we have Internet!!
This would explain why multiple computers can connect to an internet connection, but one computer doesn't.
I'm having this problem with my MacBook Pro right now, and will attempt to take out the RAM when I get home to see if it fixes it. I had it at work, and was in the middle of surfing on our Ethernet network, when it suddenly stopped. I just put new RAM in a few weeks ago, so one might have failed.

  • Why Is Keeping Correct TIME in Arch Such A PITA?

Why has this happened again. Why is keeping correct time in Arch such a constant struggle and general pain in the ass?
My latest Ubuntu install doesn't even use ntp or openntpd, and never looses track of time. It keeps correct time running in an
Arch Vbox along with most other virtual Linux distros.
Does this have to be this way. I could care less if my time is off by a min or so, but to be off 10min every 2-3 days is not good.
It seems the info in the wiki is ether obsolete or inaccurate and or overly complex.....with too many....some people do this....you may want to try that....
If I was a Linux GURU, I'd figure this problem out and correct/update the wiki......but since I'm not, and can't...
I have no choice but to beg for help, Please!!
    This is the problem again!!!

Thanks for the help and patience Rookie.
I guess I am kinda guilty in not wanting to put much into "just want to see close to the correct time on my desktop" problem!!!
I tend to prioritize the time I spend on my new Linux hobby by what I find interesting and or FUN.....
To be honest, this time issue has been neither, and is something I'd like to find a quick fix, and move on.
    I haven't spent much/any time actually "studying" it....my bad!!
And no, I didn't just randomly guess 4 numbers between 0 and 255, put them together with decimal points, and hope for the best....
I used my random time server IP address generating algorithm ....just kiddn!!
I got them from my ntpq -p output (#8 post above) that was when ntp was working.

  • Why does the correct return address not show up on outgoing messages?

    Hello,
    Specs:
    Windows NT
    iPlanet Messaging Server 5.1
    iPlanet Directory Server 4.13
One user recently went through an account change (spam reasons).
    old uid: bob
    old email: [email protected]
    new uid: bsmith
    new email: [email protected]
The problem is, that during testing, any email sent from the new account is arriving as having both the <Return-path> and <From> fields with the old email address.
Keep in mind that this is not a client-specific problem as everything has been changed correctly (outlook) If an email goes from "Clients computer" >> "3rd party smtp server" >> "Hotmail" or the like, it shows up as having the correct return address.
But the pickle I'm in, is that if an email goes from "Clients computer" >> "3rd party smtp server" >> "Our Server" , it shows up as having the OLD return address. - same thing if messages are sent internally (same server) through the webmail interface. The messaging server is somehow rewriting the email field when any message goes through it.
What makes this a super-pickle is that this is a NEW account., not just a 'change' of the old one. The old account has been deleted, and the command 'imadmin user purge' doesn't find it, nor is there any reference to the old 'bob@' address in the ldif file except for an address book entry or two (other users have added 'bob' into their address book)
Any help is greatly appreciated in advance. Sorry for the long description, but now all the bases I've covered are known.
    Sincerely,
    Josh

    Jay,
I only mentioned SIMS 4.0 because I jumped directly from that to MS 6.0p1, and because what my customers wanted to do worked on SIMS and doesn't on MS6.
To complicate things more, my customer has multiple domains, but not all employees have e-mail addresses in both domains. For example, Joe is [email protected], Jane is [email protected], and John wants mail sent to either [email protected] or [email protected] to come to him.
I dealt with this by setting up abc & xyz as separate domains, and created a mailing list in xyz.com named "john" with an external member of [email protected] While this works fine, when I add an alias to that mailing list of "[email protected]" and John tries to send a message with "[email protected]" in the From, it is rewritten to [email protected] as that is his primary e-mail address.
In looking at the LDAP entries of mailing lists that are not working as I'd like, I see that the aliases are specified as mailAlternateAddress attributes. Are you saying that if I change these to MailEquivalentAddress attributes that they will then show up in the From unchanged?
Oh, and one more possible factor - they are sending mail using SMTP AUTH as they are roving users. Since the mail server knows that the authenticated user is truly [email protected], is that why his From of [email protected] gets nuked?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Why updates keep failing since 10.9.2 to 10.9.4 (blank screen)?

I'm IT manager with 60+ Apple computers (mostly iMac and laptops) all running Mavericks and since 10.9.2, the automatic system updates keep failing on a few of my computers (10-12 computers out of 60). Users launch the system updates when they leave office by the night and when they come back next morning, login screen is black and there's only a moving cursor! No matter if you reboot, safe boot, verbose or EVEN reinstall OS (I tried it once), it's still the black login screen.
This problem is highly discussed on the web and there's an easy fix to force update to continue and succeed... but as IT manger I am very tired to fix manually several computer every time Apple release a system update!! For people who's wondering, the fix is to power off computer, restart in safe mode (shift key), then type your admin account, hit TAB and type your password within the black screen then after a few try the display will light up and update will continue and succeed after a final reboot.
I am just wondering why updates keeps failing since 10.9.2, also in 10.9.3 and still in 10.9.4...  it's not happening on specific Mac model/year and my computers are not "ghosted" (restored) from disk image on each other... there's no link between the computers who's failing and those who succeed to update!! They are in different department of the business and they are not having same software installed. Few are for office work (Ms-Office) and other are graphic design (Adobe) or video. Almost all users are non-admin but a few are admin and both admins and non-admins are failing!
If you have some hints for me, I'll be very appreciated since I lost so much time to manually relaunching the update. Thx!!

The article is quite interesting. Quite a Mea Culpa from Apple!
Translated, the article says -- if you get any of these errors, iTunes and/or IOS have corrupted your device to the point where it cannot be recovered. You must reinitialize (i.e. restore from backup) your device.  -- excetp that the first step "Copy your backup" is less than informative or useful.
Under OSX, the mentioned location contains nothing but a bunch of files named with a string of digits.
Yes, I know what they represent and how to translate them -- howver, I pitty joe-user with no experience with OSX.
The bulk of the article is for Windows systems. Very little information in that article applies to OSX.
The funny, but sad, thing is the first thing they tell you to do is to update OSX and iTunes and security software -- when in fact that is what cause the problem in the first place. Granted the articles pre-date the OSX/iTunes updates which caused the problem.
However, all of that blather ignored -- the article does NOT address my problem.
    Unless it really does.
I have no issues (apparently) with successfully backing up my iPhone. At least iTunes claims that it is being successful.
What is failing is the second half -- the Sync.
OF course, that is if you belive iTunes -- which, according to the /Library/Logs/MobilBackup/MobilBackup.log, has in fact NOT happened now since January!
    Very interesting.
    Thanks for your suggestion.
    However, I continue to hunt.

    Order of Troubleshooting...
    (1) Video Card Driver Problem
Does the computer use a NVIDIA GeForcce video card/graphics card? If so, stop and read the announcement at the top of this forum.
It describes the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA video card driver problem and gives the fix. For your convenience the following is a
copy/paste of the Announcement. Very important to rule in or out the known Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver issue.
Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
If you are a Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card and you are experiencing Premiere
Elements 10 display and/or unexplained program behavior, then your first line of troubleshooting needs to be rolling back the video card
driver version instead of assuring that it is up to date.
Since October 2013 to the present, there have been a growing number of reports about display and unexplained workflow glitches specific
to the Premiere Elements 10 user whose Windows computer has a NVIDIA GeForce video card. If this applies to you, then the “user to user”
remedy is to roll back the NVIDIA GeForce video card driver as far as is necessary to get rid of the problems. The typical driver roll back has
gone back as far as March – July 2013 in order to get a working Premiere Elements 10. Neither NVIDIA nor Adobe has taken any corrective
action in this regard to date, and none is expected moving forward.
Since October 2013, the following thread has tried to keep up with the Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA reports
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1317675
Older NVIDIA GeForce drivers can be found
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
A February 2014 overview of the situation as well as how to use the older NVIDIA GeForce drivers for the driver roll back can be found
    http://atr935.blogspot.com/2014/02/pe10-nvidia-video-card-roll-back.html
    (2) "Movie" Properties
We need to know the properties of your source media, such as,
    Video compresson
    Audio compression
    Frame Size
    Frame Rate
    Interlaced or Progressive
    File Extension
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
We could direct you to video and audio properties readout programs, but let us see if we can get the information needed from knowing
the brand/model/settings for the camera that recorded the video.
Please check out these 2 important concerns, let us see what you have, and then we can decide what next. The video card driver matter may fix all.
Do not hesitate to ask if there is anything that you need help to understand what is needed.
    Thank you.

  • K8N Neo4/SLi - Keeps detecting Raid at bootup

    Hello everyone,
My K8N Neo4/Sli non platinum board keeps detecting IDE raid at bootup.  Am I supposed to load the raid drivers on the floppy even though I don't have it enabled in the bios?  That may be a separate question but curious.  At this point it's more of a 10-15 second annoyance.  My machine radomly freezes in windows xp too.  Not sure if it's related.
Thank you to anyone that can help or has ideas.
    Setup:
    3500+
    7800gtx msi
samsung sata 7800 160g drive on first sata
    Maxtor ide on 1st IDE
    2 opticals on 2nd IDE

LOL...or sometimes when O.C.'ing the CPU...SATA devices decide to take a vacation!!!!
i don't have any SATA devices on my machine, but i still couldn't figure out why after i stoped using RAID and wanted to switch to a 2X160 GB non-RAID config, after BIOS post the screen would hang at detecting NV raid. took me 3 hours to find out that if the optimized settings were loaded, the trick would be to disable the aggresive memory timings from the cell menu. strangely enough, it worked with aggresive timings and the BIOS i had when i got the mobo (it didn't hang at detecting and configuring raid) but not with the new ones. and this was without any OC.

  • Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?

Why WINDOWS 8.1 won't install/load on PC where WIN 8 runs Fine ?
As far as System Requirements go, they are the same for WIN 8 and WIN 8.1
    Sympton:
Windows 8.1 Installation DVD loads for some time, no circle of dots, then PC reboots
with quick flash of six lines or so of white text (on black backgound) @ 106 seconds
Needed to use Smart Phone video camera to capture
    Your PC needs to restart.
Please hold down the power button ...
    Error Code:0x000000C4
    Parameters:
    0x000...91
    0x000... F
    0xFFFFF800699C5A80
    0x00000000000000000
    0x00000000000000001
Presumably message is intended for frozen PC, hence 'hold down power button'
In this case it flashes and re-boots
Windows 8.1 Image loads quickly, flash and reboots PC, having corrupted boot entry
(thankfully not other entries in Boot Manager situated on Dell System Reserved Partition)
    PC Desktops affected:
    Dimension 5000 - shipped JAN'05
    RAM 4GB
    Intel Pentium 4 640 3.20Ghz 64bit NX enabled
    ATI Radeon HD 6450
    Dimension 5150c/XPS 200 -shipped MAR'05
    RAM 3GB
    Intel Pentium D 820 2.80Ghz 64bit NX enabled
    Intel 82945G WDDM 1.0
Both the above PC's Install and run Windows 8 without a hiccup
    Another 'ancient' machine, but unaffected:
    Precision 490 Desktop - shipped OCT'07
    RAM 4GB
    2 x XEON 5365 3.0Ghz
ATI HD 6450 (Now HD 7750)
All 8.0 & 8.1 clean Installs and Upgrades on this platform had no problems
Hope some of you can throw some light on this. What does WIN 8.1 do in the boot
process that WIN 8 does not?
And if anybody has encounterd this before...
Note to multi booters - keep or reinstall Dell or other System Reserved partition (PRI,Active)
EasyBCD/Windows Boot Manager held on this partition (eg. 350MB)
If it gets corrupted, you can Restore it, rather than Gigabytes of 1st Primary O/S
Also, it will solve a lot of problems, when manipulating/adding/backing up/restoring O/S's
    That's it, happy computing...

Fellow user from St. Louis, Missouri pointed in the right direction. I'm grateful
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Running upgrade assistant (going to Store rejects CPU, but no details)
    Results in:
    X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support LAHF/SAHF.
X You can't install Windows 8.1 because your processor doesn't support PrefetchW.
There are at least three Processor requirements that M'soft does not list for WIN 8.1
and it's fairly well documented, if you ask the right question, eg.:
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2058683/new-windows-8-1-requirements-strand-some-users-on-windows-8.html
So that's it, exclusion by 'stealth' - at least M'soft told you that processor required NX - Execute Disable Bit
    for Windows 8
For Intel units, look out for 'VT-x. Have a processor on the way, but will Motherboard pass CMPXCHG16b test?
    AND PrefetchW AND LAHF/SAHF
Windows 8 support ends 2015, that means people who bought it will have had 2 years use
WIN 8.1 Upgrade/Update (sic) is free, but costly if it won't run on your machine
So, those many people who decried Windows 8 and stuck to WIN 7, were right after all
Early supporters of WIN 8, have been 'betrayed'
'Minimum Requirement for Processor 1Ghz - don't make me laugh! (Presumably for Phone 8)
M'soft have a 'more info' link on System Requirements page, so why not spell it out...
Otherwise it looks like a PR/Cosmetic exersize

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.
