Why Windows on a Mac?

Why would anyone want to run Window$ on a Mac?
I have an iMac G5 for over a year now. The main, and in fact only reason, is because I was sick and tired of all those ever-returning problems with Window$, ranging from security issues to crashes (I even managed to make XP Pro crash). Panther (still running 10.3.9) has never crashed, and of programs, only Safari has crashed a couple of times (probably because of a faulty website). And as for OS X-viruses - which viruses?
So, why, in Steve's name, would one want to run Windows on a Mac - especially with the same security and stability issues? If need be, then keep an (older) PC beside your Mac to run Windows$-only programs (like I do), but wanting something from Microsoft on your Apple is like - like blasphemy! :-o
HELL will have to freeze over, before I ever install Winblows on my wonderful iMac!
iMac G5, 17-inch, Superdrive, 768 Mb RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

What are you talking about, Kris?
Intel ≠ Windows.
Intel ≠ Microsoft.
The only real reference in the keynote address that pertained to Microsoft was regarding Microsoft Office for Mac, a piece of software which is unrelated to Windows.
Microsoft has a pretty substantial Macintosh development team, not to mention a website devoted to "All Things Macintosh" called Mactopia.

  • Why can you run windows on a mac, but not mac on windows

I dont understant why you can run windows on a mac, but not mac on windows.  Any help.  I would purchase OS X Mountain Lion if you gave me a way.

Microsoft builds software to run on other companies' hardware, pretty much exclusively if you don't count the long line of failed devices: Zune, Windows phone, and now the Surface.
Apple builds hardware. They support that hardware with their own operating system. It is designed to run only on their very tightly integrated hardware. Trying to write software for the plethora of crap being sold would be a failing proposition and would divert resources away from the great software they provide for their hardware customers.
The hardware and software are very well engineered to provide the best possible experience.
If you want to experience a Mac, buy a Mac.

From your point of view and the framing of your question, Apple does indeed support WIndows better than Mac for the limited issue of iCloud.

...YET, Leopard and Snow Leopard are NOT iCloud compatible. How can that be justified? Obviously, Apple can make iCloud available to Snow Leopard, but disdains us...
Historically speaking, Apple has rarely gone backwards in its OS development.  Once they have released a new OS with new technology, I can only think of one example of when they backtracked:  They released TrueType technology in System 7 and then released System 6.0.8, which included TrueType technology for continuing System 6 users.
So it is part of their culture to move forward and not backwards.  Other examples:
    •  Inclusion of the then novel SONY 3.5" disk drive in its release of the first Macintosh (and not the industry standard 5.25" drive); after its use in the Lisa and adoption for the Apple II series of computers.
    •  Elimination of the floppy drive completely in the release of the first iMac.
    •  Use of then novel AAC audio compression as "state of the art" compression for the iPod release in 2001 instead of the outdated mp3 standard.
    •  Refusal to allow use of FLASH in iPod Touch/iPhone/iPads.
How could they justify these decisions?  The marketplace justified them for Apple!
So, yes, they could release 10.6.9 with iCloud support.  But why now, if not then?

  • Bootcamp - Windows 8.1 - Mac Pro (Late 2013) -- ATI Driver Crash

    Hi All,
I have a open case with Apple as well on this but i can not seem to locate any information on this issue on the web at all.
    Case: 601052633
Basically, we received a new Late 2013 Mac Pro, and out of the box proceeded to install bootcamp and windows 8.1.
After the install and the bootcamp drivers are installed the screen starts to display lines and the ATi drivers eventually crash.
If we uninstall the ATI drivers the screen is returned to normal and windows uses the generic drivers, however the graphics performance is degraded.
If we install the latest ATI drivers (downloaded directly from the ATI webpage) the display issues reoccur.
If left to run its path the screen becomes unreadble and eventually the system bluescreens.
To recap all the things I have done:
Straight out of the box we started the boot camp install. We use the latest Windows 8.1 Media.
Once the process is completed the PC reboots as normal and we install windows on the “BOOTCAMP” partition.
Windows installs without issue and when the bootcamp drivers window pop’s up it starts its install. At the “Chipset” drivers install the window starts to flicker, this appears to be normal but afterwards the screen shows “lines” on it. (these lines can be seen on image below)
Once windows is booted the lines remain and progressively gets worse. Image below shows the ATI Criver crash and the blue screen. This takes 2-5 seconds. And depends on how much you move on the screen.
Screen capture (shown Below) shows the issues, even with screen capture the issue is recorded.
If we uninstall the ATI display drivers the issue disappears.
    Process of tests:
Install Bootcamp windows 8.1 on Mac pro 2013 out of the box – Issue recorded
Remove Bootcamp and update firmware on Mac.
Install Bootcamp windows 8.1 on Mac Pro 2013 – Same issue.
Updated ATI Drivers using ATI drivers off ATI website – Same issue
Uninstalled ATI Drivers – 2 Generic Microsoft video cards detected – issue removed but video performance degraded.
Updated Bootcamp Drivers – ATI drivers reinstalled – Issue returned
Removed bootcamp, restored system to factory settings via web install.
Installed Bootcamp windows 8 on Mac Pro 2013 – Same issues
Removed bootcamp restored System to default
Tried installing windows 7 – not supported
Installed Windows 8.1 and ran screen captures and diagnostics.
We have also tried using different display ports, Different display adaptors, Different monitors.
    Mac OS is not affected.
Note Mac is “out of the box”, Windows is a next next next install. No changes or software is installed.
    Any support would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Steffen.
    It Manager.

I had this exact same issue and had been hunting it down since i first received my Mac Pro back in May 2014. I researched the problem all over the place but I have no idea why i did not find this post, or in fact why Apple techs did not find this post either.
Bottom line: In my case I have pretty much proved this was a problem with the AMD FirePro D300 video card/s. They basically can't cope with Windows graphics needs.
I have a new Mac with D500 cards, and now the problem is almost completely gone. I can recreate if i run certain situations and a screen saver. Upon refresh, there is a chance the card will crash, but showing a slightly different outcome.
Having read the prior posts, the D700 may also have the same issue??
Longer story and background: I am not exactly an expert, but i did try many different things and probably spent in excess of 200 hours onto tech support and installing, reinstalling, trying different monitors, trying different software. Eventually i was so frustrated and in tears with this issue.
The major problem over all this time was the constant response from Apple that this was not an Apple issue since the Mac OS was not showing any issues.
I was at the time a new Mac convert, my brother had purchased the 'awesome' machine for me as a birthday gift, with the goal that we could play a specific game together. My disappointment in Apples inability to recognize or even attempt to recognize that this was related to the hardware in the Mac itself was constant and ongoing.
My final visit to the Apple store to again visit the 'Genius' bar came up yet again with the most senior tech in the store telling me that there were no problems identified with the hardware and that this was not their issue. Totally frustrating. I was rather hoping, in the good tradition of true geeks, that this would have been a challenge to hunt down. I was pretty sure they trusted me that this was not a standard Windows issue, and thus was hoping they would switch out individual pieces of components (video cards being my first choice) to see if that the problem repeated. Nope, didn't want to do it.
My response was to threaten with legal action - not something i enjoyed doing, plus that i would NEVER buy an Apple product again. Since I was a new business client, this may have had an impact.
This wonderful Manager at the store agreed that he wanted to take the hardware out of the equation and see if I still had the issue. So he, amazingly, agreed to refund in full for the machine and I could order a new one.
As i was convinced this was hardware related, since I had the Quad core, D300's, 12 gig machine and my brother had the top of the range six processor, D500s, 16gig memory machine which did NOT have this issue, running identical software, when i reordered the Mac Pro, I bumped it up to the D500s (still Quad core) and 16gig of memory (also had the 1TB drive partitioned 40/60 in bootcamps favor).
I tentatively installed windows after a couple of days of normal Apple usage (software updates included).
I then hammered the system with the same software and installs.
Its been up and running for perhaps 2-3 weeks now, and I have not seen the issue at all, other then when i had screen saver running and 4 instances of the game running (Everquest for those of you who are interested - but the software is almost irrelevant, since i have had this issue using internet explorer or Chrome).
So..  I urge Apple to review this issue with the D300s and either remove them from the configuration options or resolve the issue. One of the powerful selling things for this wonderful machine is its ability to run Windows in native mode. I like it because I also want to get into App Development, so the dual option boot option is just what i wanted.
Responding to us poor Windows installers with 'not my problem' simply isn't good enough and should never have been something i had heard.
All good now, I am happy with the end result, but I would like Apple to recognize this IS AN ISSUE THEY NEED TO ADDRESS.
I apologize if my technical knowledge is not a strong as it might need to be in relaying this information to you guys, but hopefully it all makes sense.
    Paul

  • Why won't my Mac Lion recognize Kindle device?

why won't my Mac Lion recognize Kindle device? I want to use files on my Kindle but when I plug in the Kindle USB to the MacBook Pro's port, the computer won't show it or recognize it.

Annoying same with my Android Samsung devices which will when I am in Windows.

  • USB compatible with Windows 7 and Mac OS X

    Hi everyone.
I bought myself today a Datatraveler 32GB usb stick from Kingston. I do some computer fixing in my spare time.
I want to put my personal tools on this stick. So when I go to people who have Windows I take the usb stick with me and I have all my tools on it. On the other side, when I go to people with a Mac, the usb stick has to be compatible with that too. So I thought, when I make 2 partitions on it and I format the first one with Mac OS X extented and the second with NTFS, then I got a usb stick that is compatible with both OSes. But when I format this in Disk Utility my Windows PC doesn't recognize the stick as compatible.

    Hi Joel,
just as an idea: why not use FAT32 as file system ?
It's compatible with both Windows 7 and Mac OSX.
    For your immenent problem:
You have to use MBR (Master Boot Record) as partition scheme on the stick, then Windows 7 can format its partition with NTFS and OSX can format with MacOS Extended (Journaled) on its designated partition.
Be aware of some stories that using MacOS Extended file system on an MBR partitioned drive/stick might lead to 'deteriorating' problems later on.
Personally I use FAT32 for my USB-Sticks without any problems going back and forth between Windows and Mac OSX.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Windows 8 on mac crashes

I installed Windows 8 on Mac via bootcamp, when I start it seems alright but after 10 minutes it freezes and I have to forcibly restart the computer, does anyone know why?

I had the same problem. You have to set the performance to highest in windows - (no power saving) and it will not crash anymore. This worked for me and Ive been using it over a month.

  • Viruses, from Windows partition to Mac partition ?

    Hello everyone !
I recently installed Windows on my Mac via Bootcamp. I found two trojan horses on my Windows partition, so I deleted it.
My question is : Can viruses or any other malicious thing go from the windows partition to the Mac partition, or in a general way, switching between partitions ?
    Sincerely.

First their is now way the trojan can move from the windows partition to the macs and even if it did maybe through a USB drive macs and windows are built differently that is why you can't install a windows program on a mac and vise-versa.

  • WINDOWS, UBUNTU or MAC

just reply whats your favorite operating system is.
    mine is ubuntu.
win 7 is also very useful to me
    and i hate mac.
*disclaimer* I am not now, nor have I ever been, an employee of Best Buy, Geek Squad, nor of any of their affiliate, parent, or subsidiary companies.

I prefer Ubuntu with the KDE desktop enviornment for flexibility, but I can't many programs there - so I end up back with Windows. So I dual boot - a lot. My wife loves Windows as she doesn't want to learn a new OS. I have tried to tell her that Ubuntu has barely any learning curve, and she states 'it has *a* learning curve, period, so I won't use it, period.'.
Which is why Windows is domininating the market. The only reason. (being that everyone knows it, therefore software designers only make programs for it.)
I don't like Mac on principle, but acknowlege that the computers themselves are decent quality - but should be dipped in gold to equal the value of their prices.
I am a Bestbuy employee who volunteers on these boards on my own time. I am not paid for posting here, and you should understand that my opinions are exactly that - opinions. I do not represent Bestbuy in any way.

  • Cannot extract Window driver for MAC

I have windows installed in my MacBookPro. The problem is I do not have Window driver for Mac. This is the reason why :-
I created a partition of Fat32 (that was my mistake). When I tried to load Windows using BootCamp - it did not work. It is asking me to go to Disk Utility anc conver the partition to Mac file system whcih I am unable to do that. To go round -
I have installed XP in the Fat32 partion without using Boot Camp. The problem is getting the Windows driver for Mac beucase I cannot use the Boot Camp.
Are there any way of getting Windows driver for Mac ?

You need a boot loader and that's what BootCamp establishes.

  • How do I change my iPod Touch from a Windows to a Mac?

I recently bought a Mac, to replace my PC.  I have a 2nd generation iPod running the latest (4.3.3 I think).  I have transfered all my files from my Windows to my Mac through USB, and all the files are also sitting on my Mac.  However, when I insert my iPod to the Mac, it can't sync apps without erasing the data on my iPod.  How do I do it without erasing it?  I have it backed up on my Mac and PC.  I also have a brother with a 4th generation iPod.  I assume the soliution would be the same?  THanks!!

Sorry didn't mean to make this the correct answer
What do you mean?  This is what I get:
"Are you sure you want to sync apps? All existing apps and their data on the iPod “Connor’s iPod Touch” will be replaced with apps from this iTunes library."

  • How can I just modify (from "Windows" version to "Mac") my purchased software?

I've already purchased the Adobe Premiere Elements 13 in the wrong version: I need it for Mac and I've ordered the Windows version. How can I modify it?
    Thank you in advance,
    Jose Luís

Thanks Ned, but the moment I bought it I did it wrong and when they offerded me to choose one version I picked up "Windows" instead of "Mac" by mistake... now I can't find the way to modify it.
