Why won't bootcamp create a partition?

When I try to partition my hard-drive with boot camp, I get a message saying I need to backup my disk and format it as an Extended Volume (journaled). The disk I'm trying to partition is already formatted as such, so I'm not sure what I need to do.

Either there's a problem on the drive or it is not partitioned GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled or you may not have sufficient contiguous free space for the Windows partition you are trying to make. Try a smaller partition although if the drive is sufficiently fragmented you will need to repartition and reformat the drive.

  • Why won't my FireWire HD partitions stay mounted on my desktop?

Why won't my FireWire HD partitions stay mounted on my desktop? I recenly purchased a quad interface 500GB external HD from OWC (which is connected via FW800). I then partitioned it for TIME MACHINE, some room for a backup of my primary HD, and partitions for boot disks for LION, SNOW LEOPARD, & TIGER. All partitions seem to be OK as well as the backup I made of my primary HD (using SuperDuper). My Energy Saver prefs are set to sleep the display in 3 minutes and the Hard Drive in 15 minutes. I fried one of my processors on the old Quicksilver by setting the Hard Drive sleep to NEVER. Don't want to make that mistake again on this Mac Mini, but I'm afraid that it is these prefs that are causing the primary internal HD to sleep, and at the same time lose my new external HD. Mysteriously, I have a SimpleTech 160GB HD with two partitions connected via USB2.0 and these NEVER dissappear.
Anyone have some helpful advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it's now Sunday, around 11:00am. What I have discovered has nothing at all to do with Energy Saver prefs as I had previously suspected. This morning, after having unchecked the box that would "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible," I woke the computer and discovered that once again all partitions of my new external hard drive were no longer mounted. So I thought of trying something new.
Because I believed it to be insignificant, I failed to mention that this hard drive has two FireWire 800 ports. One is connected directly to the Mac Mini, the other I used to daisy chain a connection to my iSight camera (FireWire 400) using a bilingual cable. I wondered if the daisy chain might be causing a problem somehow. Incidentally, the iSight camera launches iChat whenever I turn the new HD off and then on again. An action which has always caused the missing partitions to mount. iChat launches even if the aperture cover is closed (turns camera off). Note: connected this way the iSight camera has been working fine.
So this is what I tried next. I simply unplugged the bilingual cord connecting my iSight camera. The first time the computer went to sleep, when I woke it again all the partitions were right where they should be. So I took the next step by once again checking the box next to "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible.” Now the Energy Saver prefs are once again set exactly the way they were before I bought this new drive. I left for church at 7:45 and returned around 11:00am. Again, when I woke the computer all partitions of the new drive were exactly where they should be.
So, problem gone. But now how do I connect my iSight camera? And why is it causing all the partitions for the external drive to drop from the desktop every time the computer sleeps?
I have a son in the Navy and use the iSight to video chat when he is overseas. Is there something obviously wrong about the way I had the iSight camera connected? I would certainly welcome any help or suggestions.
    Thanks in advance,

And I figure about - if there is a setting somewhere for minutes per Chapter as in Roxio Toast ?
Go into the Map mode, select the movie there
and select the Advanced ➙ Create Chapter Markers for Movie menu option
Then you can set the Chapter length in 1 minute increments:

  • Bootcamp - Create new partition and format in Windows 7

    Hello All
I have Windows 7 installed on my sons MacBook Pro.
The Drive is partitioned at 500GB for Windows and 300GB for Mac.
In windows, I need to shrink the Windows drive, and then create 2 extra drives from it.
However, I can shrink the drive, but when I try to Format, it tells me that it cannot find the drive, and then it changes the drive types to all "Dynamic" including the Mac Drive.
And once this happens, I can no longer access the Mac drive during Boot, and windows will not load, as it cannot find the drive during windows boot up. And which point, I have to restore the system and it takes up to 6 hours to installed Lion, as my Internet is slowing that a cold winters day.
So, my question is the following.
How can I successfully shrink the drive.
    Then Partition the FREE space
Then Format to NTFS without loosing drive type and integrity?
    Thanks All

I ask because what you want to do can be done right from within Windows if you're creating two more NTFS partitions out of the original.
In a single disk system, the MBR looks like this. Even Windows cannot add an entry, unless this Hybrid MBR is manipulated by hand prior to the partition creation. For example, one can create the '0xEE' entry as start=1, size=1454211071, which then allows Windows to create two more entries. If that is done by hand, the GPT and MBR are now out-of-sync. which means OS upgrades or anything done in Disk Utility will cause a data loss or create Windows boot issues.

  • Why won't this create a clipping mask?

Trying to take an AI file that I purchased and mask it into a shape. Either it comes back that it cannot mask, or I get a white screen. If I then select the shape, I can see it selected but it has no fill. The AI file was a complex design, but I've tried using the Make Clipping Mask from the Layers panel as well as the Object panel. Neither works. What am I missing?
here is a link to the file...

The problems (there are several) reside with the bird drawing that you are trying to use as a masking object. Select the bird and Choose Object>Clipping mask>Release Clipping Mask. Delete the white box that shows up. Reselct the bird and Choose Object>Compound Path>Release Compound Path.Go back to Object>Compound Path and Make Compound path> Then select all and choose Object>Clipping Mask>Make Clipping mask.
    That should do it.

  • Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro

    Hi Everyone,
Can I force the bootcamp wizard to skip looking for the bootcamp drivers?  I have already downloaded the latest drivers and loaded them on a FAT usb drive.  All I want is for bootcamp to create the partition and allow me to install windows 8 pro.
The bootcamp drivers have been downloaded from apple's website.  Filename:  BootCamp5.0.5033
    I have a iMac 27" late 2013 model.
NOTE:  I have downloaded the drivers manually from apples support site as the bootcamp wizard fails third of the way through the download.
    Appreciate any assistance.
    Regards,
    asdutoit

There is a missing point in this thread, and it is that the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2013 iMac can only be downloaded from Boot Camp Assistant. The Boot Camp drivers available in the Apple site are not compatible with that iMac.
Delete the Boot Camp drivers from the USB drive, open Boot Camp Assistant and try to download the Boot Camp drivers again. If you get a message telling you that they could not be downloaded, I would try reinstalling OS X through OS X Recovery, by holding down Command and R keys while your Mac is starting up

  • I need help with creating a partition with bootcamp. I run OSX Lion and want to also run Windows 7.

Bootcamp is not allowing me to create the partition. The message i get when i try to do so is as follows:
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot      Camp Assistant again.
I am looking in Disc Utility and am not sure what to do.
To me it looks like i only have one 'single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. So i am not sure exactly what it is requiring me to do?
    Help greatly appreciated!

Look to the right under "More Like This". Your issue has been discussed many many times. The error you are seeing is because you do not have enough free "contiguous" space on your hard drive. Read the other threads that address this issue to find how to solve the issue.
Or, put "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" into the search box at the upper right of this page.

Why can't I create a document in my Facebook group on my iPad. It won't let me input any text into the text box field after I create a new document. Thanks.

Just thought I'd add my solution, I decided to go with WebDAV and I think it actually works better than the iTunes way, the steps are pretty much the same but avoiding the iTunes interface just makes things easier and faster.
I followed this guide but it does have a small mistake in the httpd-dav.conf file, on line 2, where it's WebServer/WebDAV">, it should be <Directory "/Library/WebServer/WebDAV">.
The tricky part is setting permissions which if wrong will give you errors when connecting with the iPad, I opted to set all to Read&Write since my home network has a hardware firewall. Another convenience was to add an alias to the webdav share on the Desktop.
I'm still expecting the call from Apple but even if they fix the iTunes I'm sticking with WebDAV, atleast until I see what's new with iOS5 and iCloud this fall which should bring true sync for documents (I'm hoping that they will offer encryption with my own keys, if not, then I'll probably keep using WebDAV).

  • Bootcamp Cannot create a partition

As a newbie to mac, i thought it would be pretty easy to use the assistant to install W7.
Following the bootcamp procedure, Bootcamp assistant fails to create a partition.
"Your disk could not be partitioned. An error occurred while partitioning disk." No other information leads me to understand the problem
So i tried to verify disk problems and repair but no luck.
I looked online and some suggestions include restarting the computer in single mode and running /sbin/fsck -fy but despite that same problem.
So i thought i would try to just create a normal partition using disk utility (nothing to do with windows 7 etc). The error is as follows:
"This core storage operation is not allowed on a sparse logical volume"

You can not create another partition on a drive containing a Boot Camp partition. You now need to erase then format your drive. Reinstall OSX then reuse Boot Camp Assistant to create a new Boot Camp partition. Reinstall Windows. Ensure you copy off all your data before erasing and formatting the drive.

Why won't Itunes store my music library in my User/Music Folder?
If I select my user name as a storage location in Itunes, Itunes creates folders for artist name right in my user folder, instead of in my user/music folder.  This gets especially annoying because if I tell Itunes to store my "media" in my user/music folder, Itunes will then create a folder named "music" in my "music" folder and will also create additional folders in my user/music folder location to store other non-music media in as well. It is very annoying to see this lack of affinity for folders between two Apple created programs.

Use a drive cleaner to clean your superdrive.  See if that works.  If it does, use it every 3 months or so if you do a lot of burning.

There are differences between each Mac and what the original configuration of the Mac is/was. If your Mac originally came with an Optical drive, burning the ISO to a DVD and using it will work. Hardware modifications like Optibay will cause problems. Modifying Bootcamp info.plist will cause problems. Disk Utility partitioning will cause problems. A custom Hybrid MBR will cause problems. External Optical drives are unlikely to work. There is long litany of grief.
