• When I download a Word file from a classroom management database, why won't Firefox open the file without me having to save it?

I have been using Firefox for many years with Blackboard products. In the last six months or so, when I try to download a student's file that is a Word .docx, it won't let me open it without saving it. Word .doc files work fine. I don't have this problem with Internet Explorer, but of course IE is clunky, slow, and doesn't fill in forms. Any help would be appreciated. Let me know if I can supply more details.

Two possible problems. <br />
1. BlackBoard never supports the latest version of Firefox, for a few reasons. Some schools don't run the latest version of BlackBoard Vista or Campus Edition. Also, BlackBoard upgrades seem to be tied to the "school year" cycle, the changes they make to improve and update their software seem to be rolled out for the fall term so that changes aren't being made during the normal "school year" and possibly causing problems for the schools. That also may be a function of their contract / payment cycles with the schools that use their programs.
http://www2.blackboard.com/tuneup/viewpage?name=tuneup_browser_tuneup_windows_firefox <br />
Select the link for the version of WebCT Vista or Campus Edition (version info is usually at the bottom of each page, in the footer) that your school is using, then see which version of Firefox is compatible.
Depending upon which version of WebCT your school is using, you will have to use Firefox 3.6.x, Firefox 3.5.x, or Firefox 3.0.x when accessing the Blackboard site.
My advice is to install the Firefox Portable version that you need for Blackboard on your computer, and use that installation only for Blackboard. Continue to use 4.0.1 for all other web browsing. <br />
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy
2. Firefox uses a Plugin ( you have Office Plugin for Netscape Navigator installed) to open files that aren't "internet files", like word processing documents. <br />
I can't help you directly with Office, as I use Open Office, but there should be a preference for that Plugin within your Office preferences or options under something like Internet, to have those files Display documents in browser. <br />
Or see this to make sure you have your "file type" set correctly. <br />

• Why won't firefox connect to the internet when IE will?

Mozilla stopped working about a week ago without my knowledge of any updates or anything like that. Internet Explorer still works fine and will connect but when I try to use Firefox it tells me 'unable to connect.' I have already removed Firefox and re-installed but that has not corrected the problem. I also spent some time looking through the settings of Firefox and things seem in order. Do you have any suggestions? I'm not sure why this happened but I can't take IE much longer (yeah your product is that good!). I am currently running windows 7.
Thanks,
Jonathan

There is a troubleshooting article with suggestions. Don't know whether you've tried these yet: Firefox cannot load websites but other programs can | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help.

• Why won't Firefox connect to the internet?

a few days ago, my firefox just stopped working all of a sudden. i can open up a page but it won't connect to the internet which is really weird because i've had my pc for a while and i've never had this problem. maybe it was the latest update for firefox? i can also browse the internet with internet explorer and safari but i like firefox a lot better so this issue is irritating. it was just from one day to another, i didn't do anything out of the ordinary to my pc and firefox doesn't work anymore. i'm hoping its just a glitch and other people are experiencing it too and there will be a solution soon but i can't help but feel frustrated. please help!

• Why won't Firefox open Yahoo mail or Craigslist correctly; it's corrupted.

For some reason I got a bug or something in my computer and these two sites (that I know of) won't open correctly, they are corrupted. Something like this happened before, but worse where I couldn't open the browser. I went to Internet Explorer and I reinstalled Firefox and it fixed the problem. Not so this time. Hope somebody has some suggestions, I especially don't want to lose all my bookmarks..

This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies.
Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

hello, this is a google issue. on their support site they say that all current versions of firefox are supported but apparently something has gone wrong in there browser sniffing which will have to be corrected on their server side...

• Why won't Firefox open a web page if there's an apostrophe in the URL?

When I click on a link and the underlying URL contains punctuation, specifically an apostrophe, I get a page not found error. Both Safari and Chrome handle these URLs seamlessly.

If it is a server-side problem, why do I have no difficulty when I use Safari? It is difficult for me to argue with them that it is THEIR problem, if the problem exists only for Firefox users. I have seen others comment on it recently also. It seems to me that Firefox needs to change something to allow a link with an apostrophe to resolve properly.
Thanks for your response, but it does not solve anything.

Hello Bryan.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode and select Disable all add-ons. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See this article for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

• Why won't Firefox open links or videos when launched?

Am using Windows 8. Installed Firefox, but am unable to get a response when I click on a link or try to launch a video. Works fine on my desktop, but not on my new laptop. A techie told me to delete firefox completely and then re-install. Really???? I checked this functionality out on IE and it works fine, but that is NOT the way I want to go.
As a specific, I launched www<i></i>.page3<i></i>.com and then tried to get more details by launching the link. Nothing happens. Help, Help

Hello,
The website you mentioned is a pornographic website where nobody will be willing to visit the website and troubleshoot with you. A clean install may just fix your issue. See below please.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox and any leftover program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps one by one:
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
#Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the Uninstall Firefox article.
IMPORTANT: On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do not check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox user profile data will be removed from your computer.
After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:
* (On 32-bit Windows) C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
* (On 64-bit Windows) C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
#In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
#Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
#* On 32-bit Windows, double-click the Program Files folder to open it.
#* On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the Program Files (x86) folder.
#Look for a Mozilla Firefox folder. If you find one, right-click it and select Delete and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
#Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
#Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

• Why will Firefox not open Windows Live when Internet Explorer will?

As above

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• Why won't Firefox open an site in a new tab when clicked on in Google?

When I was in Google and would click on a site to open, it would open in the tab I was on rather than opening in a new tab. It used to do so.
So if I go to the site and it's not the one that answers my question, rather than clicking on the back button, I have to go back and click on my Google Bookmark.
It's annoying because everytime you open Google, you get a different set of sites to access.
Today, the word I was Googling was kfeeders.

Thanks but perhaps I didn't explain the problem well.
I was on the Google page, and put in the item I was searching for, clicked search and got a page or many pages of potential sites that would fit my query. But if I clicked on one of the sites, I couldn't click back to the Google page, the back arrow was gray. It doesn't happen all the time, only occasionally. Guess it's just a problem with some sites.

• Why won't Firefox open a specific web site when Safari will

I am unable to open a specific website on Firefox yet I can open it with Safari on the same computer. I have a Mac Air and am using Firefox 26.0 with OSX 10.9.1

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page that doesn't require authentication (signing on)?
You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:
Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.
*Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
*Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
*Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)
Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

• Why won't FireFox open local .html files (when using "open file")?

I teach hand coding and use FireFox to grade my students work. I also tell them to use this browser to review their own work. If they cannot navigate to their files on their desktop I will have to switch to another browser. I know it is something from the latest version... as I have been using FireFox for the last 5 years as my classroom browser of choice.

Firefox should still be able to open files using open files.
I use Windows so things may differ slightly but the option to open files is available but not visible by default, I can get the option to browse for files using: keyboard keysAlt , F , O
My directory structure and path may differ slightly but I am also able to key directly into the location bar something such as file:///C:/
A third option would be simply to click on the relevant HTML file and use the option to open, or open with Firefox. Such files may also be bookmarked.

• Why won't Firefox open after updating? Says to close, but how?

Windows 7. Attempted to update to latest Firefox today, but it won't open on my screen. When I attempt to either use the previous version or delete it, it says to close it first. How do I close something I can't see? Thanks.

See:
Try to run the Firefox program once as Administrator (right-click firefox.exe: Run as Administrator).<br />
If that doesn't solve the problem then remove the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\) to do a clean reinstall.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Why won't firefox open up again after i completly close it?

When I close completely out of Firefox, then later try re-opening it, it won't open. It acts like it wants to open but will not. The only other way to use Firefox after closing out of it, is by shutting my computer down completely. How else can this be fix? When i go to update Firefox, it says that the program is in use and cannot update till i close out of it, but I already closed out of Firefox... Whats going on? My Firefox version is 3.5.16, and my system is Windows 7.
