Why won't firefox search?

Why won't firefox search when I type anything into the search bar? It lists everything I've typed in before but when you click search it just sits there doing nothing. If I use the search bar in the top right corner it searches just fine, but nothing from the central search line.
Also what is the line below this for? if I mouse over it I get a pointy finger, but it is blank and remains blank.

If you can't clear that saved form and search history then there may be nothing to clear.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Why won't Firefox won't download?

Why won't Firefox download? It completed the set up stage then stops.

If downloads hang at the last minute (just before reaching 100%), the cause might be antivirus software which tries to scan the file and during that process hangs the Firefox instance.
In order to fix the problem, try disabling the scanning as follows:
# In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
# Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page. A list of settings should appear
# Filter the list by typing in the search bar at the top. Type in scanWhenDone. You should now find the "browser.download.scanWhenDone" preference.
#Double-click on that preference to set the value to false.
#Next, try to download something and see if it still hangs.
Please reply and tell us whether this helped you!

• Why won't Firefox automatically show new Hotmail emails or easilly down load attachments when it was working a week ago?

Why won't Firefox automatically show new Hotmail emails or easily down load attachments when it was working a week ago?

Hotmail has been having a few hiccups lately I'm afraid.
If you don't see any emails when you log in, or nothing appears after some time, click in the middle of the grey bar on the left which has the word "Inbox" in it. This usually causes them to magically appear for some strange reason.
I've read on on a few blogs that Microsoft is working on the problem, but don't hold your breath.<br><br>
If this suggestion resolves the problem for you, please click the Solved it button next to this post after you log in into the forum. This will help others searching for a solution to the same problem.

Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?

• Why won't Firefox allow access to leaving comments on the UK's Daily Telegraph site but Safari does?

I have Firefox 3.5.3 on my iBook running Mac OS 10.5.8 as well as Safari 5.0.3. I occasionally want to use the leave a comment facility on a newspaper site (the Daily Telegraph in the UK) but despite logging into my account I cannot do so. At first I thought it was a fault with the paper's website, but I fired up Safari and found there is no such problem. So the fault must lie with Firefox. Can this be true? And, if so, why?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
* Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Why doesn't Firefox 5.x work with MailChimp. Edit screens and tools in MailChimp worked fine in Firefox 4.x, but not in Firefox 5.x. In Firefox file, the "edit" screens for the MailChimp email editor display blank pages with no tool bars. Have to go back to Internet Explorer 9.x or Google Chrome in order to edit in Mail Chimp.

• Why won't firefox delete my history searches and cookies and cahce when I click clear history?

There's a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle and it says "All items selected will be cleared. This action cannot be undone" when I try deleting everything in the clear history tab.

Please ensure that you do not have an add-on or third party program that will prevent Firefox from deleting history.

• I just downloaded the new 4.0 an now when I click on the tab it won't even load up, it'll look like the page will show up but then it won't an the it'll look like I never even clicked on it. What is going on? Why won't firefox work?

My firefox was working perfectly before when I had the 3.6 but now it just won't load up at ALL! I've dealt with it crashing on me while I was on the internet but I've never clicked on the tab OVER an OVER again an still not even having the home page show up on my screen. Its getting really frustrating and I now really wish I'd of just left my firefox the way it was. . .can you please help me??

Please do the following.<br><br>
#Use Internet Explorer 8 or 9 and go to Download Firefox 4.0.1 Do not choose "Run" when you see the prompt, but instead choose "Save" and save the file to your desktop.<br><br>
#Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to "Mozilla Firefox" and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).<br><br>
#Then reboot and delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox<br><br>
#Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.<br><br>
Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.<br><br>
To reset your home page, do the following.<br><br>
* Go to the site you want to set as your homepage.<br><br>
* Click the orange Firefox button and go to Options | Options | General.<br><br>
* Make sure it says "Show My Homepage" in the first dropdown menu.<br><br>
* Click the button called "Use Current Pages" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.<br><br>
Here are a few tips to make FF4 look like the previous version in case you don't like the new design.<br><br>
* Right click a blank part of the tab bar and click "Tabs on top" to remove the checkmark. Tabs will subsequently reappear below the search bar.<br><br>
* Repeat the same steps, but click the top one called "Menu bar". This will reinstate the text links at the top.<br><br>
* To rearrange the layout, repeat the same steps again and choose "Customize". A panel will open and while that remains onscreen, you can move elements like toolbars, buttons etc around and place them anywhere you wish. You can also drag anything you don't like into that panel and add anything you want by dragging it out of there.<br><br>
* To replace the status bar at the foot of the page, install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/<br><br>

• Why won't Firefox close, even using Task Manager, unless I right click on the process and select 'end process' ?

Firefox works fine, but won't respond when I try to shut it down. Using Task Manager to 'End Task' doesn't work. In Task Manager I have to right click on firefox in the Processes menu and click 'End Task'. Apart from logging off/shutting down, this is the only method that works. Also refused to respond when I tried to reset and doesn't respond to commands to change profile settings.

SOLUTION (possible).
Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!

• Why won't firefox open on my computer even after I re-installed it

• Why won't Firefox let me add an exception?

Firefox tells me that a site has an invalid security certificate, which I know. It asks if I want to Add an Exception and I click to add one. It pops up the Add Security Exception window and that window tells me that this site has a valid certificate and there is no need to add an exception; but I DO need to add an exception and it won't do it for me. Why?
I am working in a secure test lab and use Firefox to login to our systems under test. Each time we change or add hardware we must add exceptions to login to a system. I have done this for years with Firefox but now Firefox 4 seems confused. We now need to use EI, which I would rather not.

I use a lot of equipment with internal (untrusted/self-signed) certificates and I face this problem one or two times a month. This has been going on since FF 4.0 came out and has continued with v5 and v6. I know someone said nothing has changed with regard to cert handling - you are wrong.
This issue is nearly crippling to me and is driving me away from FF entirely. Were it not for a couple irreplaceable plugins I use, I would already be gone. No other modern browser is as irritating WRT the handling of untrusted SSL certificates as firefox is, and no other modern browser has a problem like this. I'm facing this issue right now with a system that I *need* to be able to access, and I simply cannot use FF to do so because of this infuriating issue.

• Why won't Firefox keep my settings?

For months now I've been using Firefox and it won't keep any of my settings. Also, upon start-up it shows the Mozilla page as if I'd just installed the browser. Its rather annoying because that means I have to redo all of my settings and figure out what pages I was on had I tried to save my tabs. The only thing it seems to remember are my bookmarks. I want to know why its doing this and how to fix it.

You can check for problems with preferences.
Rename or delete the prefs.js file and possible numbered prefs-##.js and user.js files to reset all prefs to the default value.<br>
You can do this via the Profile Folder.

• Why won't Firefox save my history, nor my "Options" choices regarding it?

Despite all my efforts, Firefox will NOT save my history, nor my choices (such as "Remember History") made under "Tools > Options" regarding it. How can I remedy this?

---If you did everything I suggested, you should still have your bookmarks saved (as an html file), all you need to do is import them once you get the problem resolved. I've done worse myself, when formatting and installing an OS and then realizing I forgot to move my bookmarks.html file to the temp drive... lol.
--- Sorry if my posts are long and contain many areas to consider/dwell, but that always seems to be the easiest & fastest way when dealing with anything tech, online. Messengers are faster but due to being a security weakness (they'll always be as long as the only "tunneling" firewall is owned by Symantec/Norton), and they never even get downloaded to my machines, so please, try to take in everything if you see it applies, and I will do my best not to steer you wrong by leaving something out.
---Open the tab you want to change in Tools | Options | etc. and then not only select your preference, but tic or untic a box for an "advanced/user choice". like untic "Accept Third-Party Cookies" and tic "remember search and form history". Also, untic "automatically start firefox in a private browsing session" if it's tic-ed... untic "clear history when firefox closes". Sorry if you have already, cause as you said originally, you've tried everything... but, if you don't change any settings (after changing the drop-down box for preferences) and click "apply", changes won't be saved.

---I blame M$, IE and most of all Mozilla developers if the problem spreads to everyone who has IE8 on their systems. I don't have the issue, but my IE hasn't been updated from 7 when I upgraded and freshly installed Windows XP Pro SP3. If IE 7 is giving me grief with FF, I could only imagine what newer versions of IE could screw up for FF as long as they're allowed to fornicate behind the parents' (users') backs.
