Why won't Firefox v3.6.13 save my bookmarks after browser re-start?

I thought one of my Windows file cleaners/junk deleters was causing this, so I tried saving individual website bookmarks without any use of the file cleaners (which do not run automatically), and still no success. When I save a bookmark via the menubar, I visually check that it was saved in the bookmarks drop-down menu. Upon closing Firefox, then making sure Firefox terminated by looking at Windows Task Manager as it sometimes hangs for a few seconds, and then starting Firefox once again, all bookmarks saved in the last session are gone. I can and have backed-up the bookmarks and saved them to a private folder as I have routinely done for so many years, but I have not tried to restore or import html saved bookmarks to see what happens in that instance because I know the problem I'm dealing with right now with bookmarks is not normal. I have experienced this with Firefox default theme, Curacao v4.5 which I have had no previous problems with, and persona themes. I also recently re-installed Windows Xp Home on this machine via PC vendor supplied recovery, re-updated to SP2 since SP3 drastically slows down my PC, and had previous problems with plugins such as Microsoft's drm and dotNET installing without permissions from me, but perhaps installing themselves as requirements for such software applications as I have used in the past and been reading about. That may be (or may have been) a separate problem, but it bears mentioning because it is something the end user does not expect to see or occur, meaning, it behaves like malware.

Glad things are working again.
Perhaps as suggested earlier it may be worth making manual backups of your bookmarks, they may be useful if you have difficulties again and the auto backups will not restore. see Backing up and restoring bookmarks
In many situations Java itself is not needed, but most frequently Javascript needs to be enabled in the browser for many sites' features' to work. You are probably aware of that and up-to-date, but the following may be of interest for some users:

• Why won't Firefox retain any history, save bookmarks, or save changes?

Back when I tried updating Firefox 3 to 6, I was prompted to input the administrator password (as I was installing it on another user). I exited out rather than input it, but Firefox updated anyway. The next day, after turning in my laptop again and opening firefix, it had returned to ver. 3. After updating it to 6 (with the password this time),it updated successfully, but ever since then, no matter wht version I use (7 and now 8), Firefox won't retain any of hy browsing history, allow me to add bookmarks, or save any of the changes I make to the browser whatsoever. Is there any way to fix this?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

• Why won't Firefox keeped me logged in to anything after I close and reopen it?

When I was running an older version of Firefox, when I would close a firefox window and later reopen it, I would stay logged in to everything: facebook, hotmail, gmail with multiple sign in, etc. It would also reload all the tabs I had open without me having to click "restore previous session" I liked this as I could close the window, but keep everything that I was working on or wanted open in Firefox without having to pull it all up again. I have since upgraded to the newest version after installing a new hard drive (Windows 7 still), but whenever I close Firefox, I am logged out of everything and my previous tabs don't restore unless I click "restore previous session" (that still will keep me logged out of everything, even if I click it).
How do I set up Firefox to not log me out whenever I close the browser and to automatically restore my previous session?
browser.sessionstore.privacy_level is set to 0 and I do not have "Clear history when Firefox closes" checked.
Please help! Thanks!

There is also the browser.sessionstore.privacy_level_deferred pref that is used when you do not reopen the previous session automatically via "Show my windows and tabs from last time" and uses the same values.

You can check <b>browser.sessionstore.*</b> prefs including browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash on the <b>about:config</b> page and reset browser.sessionstore prefs that are user set (bold) via the right-click context menu to the default value to make sure that Session Restore is enabled and working properly.

• Why won't firefox search?

Why won't firefox search when I type anything into the search bar? It lists everything I've typed in before but when you click search it just sits there doing nothing. If I use the search bar in the top right corner it searches just fine, but nothing from the central search line.
Also what is the line below this for? if I mouse over it I get a pointy finger, but it is blank and remains blank.

If you can't clear that saved form and search history then there may be nothing to clear.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

• Why won't Firefox won't download?

Why won't Firefox download? It completed the set up stage then stops.

If downloads hang at the last minute (just before reaching 100%), the cause might be antivirus software which tries to scan the file and during that process hangs the Firefox instance.
In order to fix the problem, try disabling the scanning as follows:
# In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
# Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page. A list of settings should appear
# Filter the list by typing in the search bar at the top. Type in scanWhenDone. You should now find the "browser.download.scanWhenDone" preference.
#Double-click on that preference to set the value to false.
#Next, try to download something and see if it still hangs.
Please reply and tell us whether this helped you!

• Why won't Firefox automatically show new Hotmail emails or easilly down load attachments when it was working a week ago?

Why won't Firefox automatically show new Hotmail emails or easily down load attachments when it was working a week ago?

Hotmail has been having a few hiccups lately I'm afraid.
If you don't see any emails when you log in, or nothing appears after some time, click in the middle of the grey bar on the left which has the word "Inbox" in it. This usually causes them to magically appear for some strange reason.
I've read on on a few blogs that Microsoft is working on the problem, but don't hold your breath.<br><br>

Hi David,
Thank you for your detailed question. It sounds like the real issue is pdf files. Are there any antivirus/firewalls that might be blocking this specific file type? or are there any preferences in your control panel that might be blocking this?
Do you have any stored preferences for PDF files in Firefox?

I updated my iPhone 4 over wifi and it went through the process fine, until it switched back on and now refusese to recognize my sim card!

Usually this means the phone was previously jailbroken or hacked to unlock it from the carrier it was locked to, and the update re-locked it to that carrier.

• Why won't Firefox use the perfectly good Favourites folder already existing inWindows for the Bookmarks?

I am trying to compare different browsers to find a favourite. However I find it an unbearable nuisance that when I save a bookmark in Firefox I can't use it in IE9 or Chrome or any other browser.
This is a universal problem with browsers, they all make their own folders for bookmarks. Is there a good technical reason for this or is it only done to irritate the users.
There is a perfectly good Favourites folder installed by Windows. Why not use that one instead of clogging up the system with unnecessary extra folders.

1. There are a few services that will synchronize Firefox and IE bookmarks, along with some other browsers. <br />
Xmarks and CometMarks are two that I am aware of.
2. The PlainOld Favorites extension allows you to have Firefox use IE's bookmarks. <br />

• Why won't Firefox close, even using Task Manager, unless I right click on the process and select 'end process' ?

Firefox works fine, but won't respond when I try to shut it down. Using Task Manager to 'End Task' doesn't work. In Task Manager I have to right click on firefox in the Processes menu and click 'End Task'. Apart from logging off/shutting down, this is the only method that works. Also refused to respond when I tried to reset and doesn't respond to commands to change profile settings.

SOLUTION (possible).
Hi all. I had this problem as well. I currently run FF26. A week or so ago, out of nowhere FF wouldn't exit - the window would close but firefox.exe process would keep running in the background using about 50% of CPU. Not sure if it's connected, but just prior to that I clicked on a link on Facebook that looked like spam website, nothing happened, site loaded (sort of, all I saw was a msg - Please Wait...) but nothing happened, I have Eset antivirus and it monitors network traffic and files for viruses, so maybe it prevented my PC getting infected...
So, I had this problem for a few days, was searching the net for solutions, but nothing seem to help. Then, just out of luck I did something that WORKED!
Here's what I did. I noticed that svchost.exe was using a lot of CPU alongside with FF. I ran ProcessExplorer to see what might be connected to this process, the list was long and I didn't have any idea where to start, so what I did was - Right click on svchost process, choose Debug and dismiss the warning. In a few seconds svchost process quit and after that FF started closing properly.
I had to re-enable all my plugins and themes I disabled prior, I also lost my history and preferences which I trashed in the process of searching for solution. But heck, it worked, hopefully for good. Now if someone could point out the real cause of this and fix it for everyone - that would be great. Cheers!
