Why Won't Flash Player Auto Update?

I'm running OS X 10.9.5. "NPAPI Plug-in version 15.0.0.152 is installed." I'm being told an update to Flash Player is available. Allow Adobe to install updates is enabled, yet the updates are never installed automatically. What must I do to have Auto Update work?

Flash Player HAS auto update available
The updates are not simply "patches" anymore. That sort of thing went the way of FAT16, several years ago.
You shouldn't have to update every day. If you are, something is wrong.

  • Why can't Flash Player auto-update?

    Even in 1998, applications had the capability to auto-update. Why do I have to download a new install file for almost every Flash Player update? It even has the option to allow auto-updates yet here I am downloading another install file for the 37th time! If flash wasn't so embedded in all of the internet, I would abandon it and uninstall it altogether. I hope that someone comes along with a better solution so I don't have to use FP anymore. Get with the times, Adobe!

  • Adobe is not maintaining Flash Player auto-update

    Flash Player auto-update is broken. The URL that is checked by the auto-update agent has not been maintained properly by Adobe:
    https://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/update/current/sau/11/xml/version.xml
    <version>
         <ActiveX major="11" minor="4" buildMajor="402" buildMinor="287"/>
         <Plugin major="11" minor="4" buildMajor="402" buildMinor="287"/>
         <MacPlugin major="11" minor="4" buildMajor="402" buildMinor="287"/>
         <SAUConfig checkFrequency="1"/>
    </version>
    This information is obviously out-of-date, as the current full-release version is Adobe Flash Player version 11.5.502.110.
    http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
    As a result, client machines relying on the auto-update process are not being patched. The client machines themselves appear to be checking properly - they have internet access and fpsaud appears to be working properly.
    There's really no point to having the auto-update facility if you're not going to maintain it. You might as well just pull it out of the product.

    This is as designed.  The silent auto update mechanism is not updated until 30 days after a major release.  However, the older style UI notifications are sent out within 7 days (and a system restart).  Hopefully the FAQ below explains how this works.
    How does the automatic update feature work in Flash Player?
    If you are responsible for updating clients within an enterprise network, we do have an option available that allows you to run your own update server and immediately push out builds silently and automatically.

  • What is the Flash Player auto-update behaviour for users without admin credentials on OSX and Windows?

    Hi
    Does Flash Player auto-update have the ability to update systems when a user does not have administrator access on their device?
    What will the results be if we enable Flash Player auto-update on OSX and Windows systems where:
    1.  Users are log in with accounts that DO NOT have administrator access; and
    2.  Internet access is granted via a proxy server, but only when a user with NO administrator credentials is logged in.
    Thanks in advance.

    Maria
    So there's no way to completely turn off user notification AND allow background updates unless you use a locally hosted update server?  That's too bad.
    Reading page 26 of the manual, I see there's an mms.cfg file that you can configure, with an option SilentAutoUpdateEnable, which is described on page 32:
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable = [ 0, 1 ] (0 = false, 1 = true)
    Availability: Flash Player 11.2 for Microsoft Windows, and Flash Player 11.3 for Macintosh
    Enables a Flash Player update to install silently in the background with no user interaction. Installs both the ActiveX and plug-in players when appropriate. This type of update is called a Flash Player background update.
    Standard users cannot disable background updates if they are enabled by an administrator.
    Depending on the type of browser, if the user has a browser open at the time of an update, the browser might not use the updated player immediately. For more information, see "Performing a background update" on page 19.
    The default value is 0 to disable background updates.
    So you're saying that even if we enable this option (but don't configure a local server), users may still be prompted some or all of the time?

  • Flash Player Auto-update problems

    Hi,
    In our environment we have Win 7 64bit Pro PCs, IE10 and users are NOT administrators.  We install Flask Player 11.8.x using the MSI silent switches, with the autoupdate service disabled, the scheduled task for auto-update deleted and the MMS.CFG file configured to AutoUpdateDisable=1.
    My current problem is that some users have now been prompted to upgrade their Flash player.  This occurs during logon with task manager showing "FlashUtil32_11_8_800_168_ActiveX.exe /update activex" as an active process.
    Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the autoupdate?  IS it possibly casued by Internet Explorer initiating the ocx? Any ideas welcome.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Andy

    I should have also mentioned that if a user clicks [Install]
    and follows the instructions, after being taken to the Flash
    download page and trying to install, our own Flash detection code
    no longer works. This means our users are prevented from launching
    our app.

  • Flash Player auto-update fails to perform major updates

    I'm managing Flash Player on a large number of Intel Mac computers.  I have enabled the auto-update feature.  Auto-update seems to work for minor updates (for example current version and update version are both 16.x.x).  However the auto-update consistently fails to perform major version updates (for example from 16.x to 17.x).
    mms.cfg file location:
    /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/mms.cfg
    contents:
    AutoUpdateDisable=0
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=1

    Hi,
    Flash Player 17 was what is referred to as a 'loud' release and is distributed via the adobe.com site and not via silent auto-update.  This blog post An outline of Flash Runtime installation options, specifically the 'Installation Options' section) provides more information.  If you license Flash Player for distribution, the blog post, and the Flash Player Administrator's Guide offer various options for organizations to update Flash Player without the possible delay of the 'loud' releases.  I'm happy to answer questions on the update options you may have after reviewing the blog post and the Administrator's guide.

  • Why won't flash player work with ios10.5.8?

    I get a message saying "Adobe Flash Player was blocked because it is out of date". Then when I go to dl update, I get a "failure to launch" message.

    No Flash for iPads, iPhones, or iPods
    Here's why there's is no Flash available for iDevices or other mobile devices. Adobe was unable to provide a product that was suitable to the needs of battery powered mobile devices used for Internet browsing. Existing Flash technology used too much memory, ate battery life, and was buggy. Simply put Flash did not work well on mobile devices.
    Apple's Steve Jobs led the escape from Flash dependency when Apple introduced the iPhone, and later introduced the iPad. There was a hue and cry over the omission. Time proved Jobs was right on target.
    So this is why there is no Flash for your iPhone or iPad or iPod nor for most SmartPhones. Flash has been abandoned by many sites in favor of supported technologies such as HTML5 or by providing their own custom app.
    Here is Steve Jobs official comment on his momentous decision to omit Flash from iDevices: Steve Jobs on Flash.
    Here is Adobe's later announcement to cease development of Flash for mobile devices: Adobe on Mobile Flash.
    Now, you are not necessarily out on a limb. There are some apps that can display some Flash, but don't count on there ability to display anything using Flash.
    Apps that can display some Flash from the Web:
      1. Puffin
      2. SkyFire
      3. Photon Flash
      4. Browse2Go
      5. Swifter
    Also, note that many sites that use Flash provide their own app for accessing their material. So check with your favorite sites and find out if "there's an app for that."

  • Flash player auto update failure

    I get the flash player update message about once a week telling me to update the flash player. when I try to run the update at the end I get the message : "Flash Player Help / Crash when leaving browser page | Flash Player   "   this link leads me to a web page telling me how to disable the realplayer browser addon. Thing is I uninstalled Realplayer months ago. They updated their player, I tried it and found it buggy and unusable and uninstalled it that same day. I never installed a browser addon and can only assume realplayer did that in the background. realplayer does not show up in my remove programs list, I searched my registry and could find no entries, and I even did a search  of my hard drive and just found an empty "realplayer downloads" folder. I followed the procedure listed on the website I was referred to, but Realplayer plugin is not listed in my IE plugins.  I can't install your updated player because your installer "thinks" I have the plugin installed. how do I resolve this?

    Download and run the offline installer from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#mai n-pars_header

  • Flash Player auto update dialog

    Our users have started reporting seeing a new Flash dialog
    box popping up when they reach our Flash applications. It reads
    "Flash Player. An update to your Adobe Flash Player is available.
    Flash Player enhances your Web browsing experience. This
    update includes:
    Security enhancements described in Security Bulletin
    APSB07-29
    Support for viewing high-definition video - See the HD
    Gallery
    Faster interactive media performance
    Read about this update and the End User License agreement. To
    Change or disable your update notification click here..
    [Install now] [remind me later] [Dont install]
    The problem is our users ARE ON 9,0,115. It looks like Adobe
    sneaked this intrusive dialog into the latest plug in, AND IT IS
    BUGGY. Unfortunately our users are BLAMING US.
    Am I right, has anyone else got this issue??

    I should have also mentioned that if a user clicks [Install]

  • Help why won't flash player work??

    I got a Nokia lumia for Christmas, its saying flash player is installed but it won't work. It says it may be disabled or something about ActiveX, but i don't know how to sort it out, Anyone able to help please?

    login with the admin account and uninstall
    then login with your normal account and install the latest
    flash player, it's the newest on the flash player 9 package.. Don't
    forget to close all browser windows before installing.
    To be on the safe side, uninstall the flash player using this
    package
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe
    Be aware of this:
    Note: Internet Explorer users may have to reboot to clear all
    uninstalled Flash Player ActiveX control files. If you're not
    certain, select the "Show Details" button in the Flash Player
    uninstaller. If there are any log lines that begin with "Delete on
    Reboot..." then you'll need to reboot BEFORE running the Flash
    Player installer again.

  • Why won't Flash Player, play?

    The Flash player installs fine, so it says, and then when the window comes up to show it is working, no video to verify it is working.  Now what?  I have taken the security settings off and deleted all the past history, deleted old versions of Player.  Still will not let me access sites that say I have to upgrade.  I see a lot of problems with this flash player 10 but no real solutions.  I am running IE8 with Vista.  Any help will be muchly appreciated.

    Hi there.
    I am new to this forum and signed up just so I could include my own frustrations with this very same problem!
    I am located in Canada and prefer to watch streaming video over regular TV.  For some reason, the CBC player stopped working for me when I upgraded my Flash Player. I do not recall which version of Adobe Flash I had installed when this problem started to occur but I know it wasn't the most current version (10,3,181,34) that I have now. But it definitely seemed to follow the Flash update.
    I have Flash version 10,3,181,34 now. I have updated to Firefox 5. Active X, javascript, etc is all enabled. I have walked through all of Adobe's troubleshooting steps. I have tried disabling my anti-virus. I tried re-installing all of my browsers, plug-ins etc. yet the problem still persists. And I am in the exact same boat as the poster in that I can still watch Flash player streaming content from all other websites but not from CBC.ca!
    So I was happy to see someone made a post about it because it is incredibly frustrating and CBC.ca doesn't respond to inquiries/troubleshooting complaints directly.
    I'm pretty technologically adapt as I am a system administrator and lon-time IT professional. Should I ever get this problem resolved, I will be sure to post here, otherwise I will pop back now and again and see if anyone else has come up with a solution.
    Cheers and thanks again to the poster for posting this!

  • Why won't Flash Player install past 25%.

    I have OS X10.10.2 Yosemite and am running Safarii Version 8.0.4 (10600.4.10.7). I have uninstalled the previous version of "Flash Player" and have tried to install a new version from url - https://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html. The installation only gets as far as 25% before stalling. I have let it run for an hour or more and it still won't budge. Can anyone help?

    This morning we resolved a problem that prevented Flash Player installations from completing for some of our Macintosh users.
    If you encountered this problem, please delete any previously downloaded Flash Player installer and either:
    1.)      Download the installer again from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
    2.)      Download the stand-alone installer from  http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_osx.dmg

  • Why won't Flash player install on my windows vista?

    After downloading and installing Flash player several times on my computer the installation fails in spite of the message reading that it has successfully installed. As a result I am unable to view videos from my favorite photo sites. Using internet explorer on a 64 bit system.

    Download the following files by right clicking and selecting "Save target as"
    Flash Player Uninstaller
    Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
    Save ALL files to your Downloads folder - DO NOT RUN anything yet.
    Reboot your system.
    BEFORE opening anything else, go to your Downloads folder and run the UNINSTALLER to remove all instances of Flash Player.
    Next, run the ActiveX Installer.
    Once Flash Player is installed go to: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/#sp
    Download BOTH files, the one on the right FIRST by right clicking and selecting "Save target as"... the other by clicking and following the steps to download the FULL ActiveX installer.
    Once everything is installed, see:Enabling Flash Player in Internet Explorer  and: ActiveX Filtering in Internet Explorer  to make 100% sure that Flash Player is enabled and NOT being blocked by ActiveX controls.
    I have a Vista Utlimate 64 bit system and it worked for me the way I described here.
