Why won't InDesign 6 hold it's preferences?

Every time I need to quit out of ID6 the preferences revert back. This is tiresome. Is there any way to make them stick?

You know, I didn't see it the first time, so I went back in and poked around and found where I could allow all the interior boxes to have the same capabilities.
You know what?
IT WORKED.
I adore you - thanks for helping and for being so freakin' smart.

  • Why won't InDesign open its own .indd file on iMac?

I have InDesign CS5.5 on an iMac OS 10.7.5 - I created an .indd file about a month ago on this machine, using this version of InDesign.  This machine is not networked, the file has no links in it, no images and is only 1.3MB in size.
InDesign won't open the file and this is the message I get when I try to open it:
"Cannot open the file "odes_PRINT.indd".  Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, o the file may be open in another application."
No other programs were open, the file was not open in another application and presumably, InDesign ought to support its own file format and not require special plugins to do so. No one but me has been in that file.
I've tried restarting the program and the machine, deleting and replacing preferences and renaming the file.  It seems like this happened to me once before a few years ago with an earlier version and I believe I had to scrap that indd file.  I could rebuild this file as it's just all text, not that big and I have the text in a plain text file BUT I want to know why this happens and what to do about it. I make large files for clients, this is a small client file that I can easily rebuild but some I can't and can't afford to have this happen again.
I've been googling this problem all evening and I'm out of ideas - anyone else got any?

Try my script in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/934429 -- it will tell you if it's an InDesign file or not.
If it tells you it is, the file must be internally damaged beyond repair. (And then you've lost it. Yes, it happens.)
If it tells you it is not, then ... well, then it is not a native InDesign file. At that point you need to retrace your steps: what did you do when you thought you were "saving" it? (As it is, in fact, impossible to use "save" in InDesign and not save 'as' an InDesign file.) What other file type could you have used? Do you ever manually or automatically rename files?
Needless to say, if it is no longer an InDesign file (never mind what the file extension says), then you cannot open it in InDesign anyway. But if you know what type of file it is, you can open it with the appropriate software (e.g. a JPEG viewer or an RTF reader) and see what's in it.

  • Why won't itunes let me "Edit" Preferences?

It all started because I needed to reset my preferences so that I would consolidate all my items in one folder and back up itunes.
I click on "Edit-Preferences" and itunes won't open the next box - crashes the program....restart over and over again...nothing...any ideas what caused this?

It is possible that you have a corrupt preference file. If you remove your preference files iTunes will create new ones with default values.
The following link tell you how to do this under user specific troubleshooting. It is for vista/windows 7, there is a link on the page to Windows XP.

  • Why won't InDesign break hyphenated words at the hyphen?

Why does InDesign not break hyphenated words at the hyphen?
    For example: "empty-handed".
InDesign will break either "empty" or "handed" on either side of the hyphen. But not right at the hyphen, even if "empty" and "handed" are each set to No Break.
    Anyone know why?
The hypen is typed in normally using the hyphen key on the keyboard.
If I type a space after the hyphen, InDesign will break there, of course: "empty- handed"
InDesign will break at an en-space: "empty–handed".
But I prefer not to have to type a space or insert an en-space or other characters because I also need to export text to ePUB and want only the actual text.
Correct break (if needed) at end of a line should be:
    . . . empty-
    handed . . .

There is no reason why InDesign should avoid breaking hyphenated words at the hyphen. That's the preferred break location.
    This must be a bug.
    Evidence:
When I turn Hyphenation OFF for a paragraph that contains a hyphenated word (such as my example, "empty-handed"), the hyphenated word is correctly broken at the hyphen (if needed at the end of a line). But when I turn hyphenation back ON, the word will not break at the hyphen.
    See the two screenshots below.
    1) Hyphenation is ON. "Empty-handed" is unbrokenat start of Line 3, yet line 2 is very loose, with room to fit "Empty-":
    2) Hyphenation is OFF. "Empty-handed" is broken at the end of line two, at the hyphen (resulting in better word spacing).
By the way, the other settings in this Hyphenation dialog don't affect this issue. I tried changing them all, with no different result relating to the break at the hyphen.

  • Why won't Indesign recognize my printer under Windows 7?

I have reinstalled InDesign on my new computer under Windows 7 and it won't recognize my HP printer.  On selecting the Print option, it lists the printer, but won't print It previously worked fine under XP.  Can anybody advise me?  Is it a compatibility issue or do I need any special drivers? .
I am using Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Standard
    Thanks
    Karon.

    KarrieKat,
Will another program, other than InDesign, recognize your printer? Are you able to print a Windows 7 Print Test Page? Have you installed the drivers certified for Windows 7 as specified by HP? Prior to migrating to Windows 7 from Windows XP did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?

  • Why won't Photoshop use my Wacom preferences?

OK, so this is going to be a bit of a back story because I think I know what part of the problem is...I just don't know how to fix it.
I recently downloaded Photoshop CC onto my computer.  I already had a copy of PS CS3 on there.  When it installed, it asked if I wanted to use my settings from that.  Not seeing a problem, I said "yes".  And things were fine.  But I wanted to change the Hotkey settings on my Cintiq for CC to be different from CS3.  When I tried to change them in System Preferences, however, it didn't work.  The settings saved, but they still used the same settings as CS3.  I changed the settings in CS3 and those came over to CC.  So, clearly it is referring to CS3 for preference. So I uninstalled CS3 and removed its settings from System Preferences.  So CC defaults back to the general shortcuts for the Cintiq.  I tried to add it back into the Applications with special keys and it still isn't working.
My guess is it is still looking to CS3 for settings, but I don't know what I need to do to get it to stop doing that.  I really just wanted to keep my unique brushes.  Does anyone know how I can remove the connection or even just get this to stop?
    Thanks!

Have you set preferences in your Wacom configuration for each version of Photoshop you have installed.  It hard to do when you have several versions of Photoshop installed wnat mant hace the same icon,  I have 6 versions installed.  Wacom configuration need setting and path for each install.
Even when I edit the saver Preferences and change the short names I can not get all six showinr in the preference panel.????\

  • Why won't InDesign download?

I paid for Indesign CC and tried to download it. I get the list of apps with Indesign listed under "Your Apps".  It says "up to date".  I cannot download the app.

John I am sorry but we need more details to provide any assistance.  Do you receive a specific error message?  Which operating system are you using?   Are you on a managed network?  If so have you contacted your I.T. department?

  • Why won't InDesign CC install?

I pressed the download button but InDesignCC wont download and comes up with installation failed.

I had paid for the month/annual subscription for InDesign, and then it downloaded the CC desktop application and that loaded and had InDesign there to install. So I click install and it gets to part way through goes to extracting and then goes to about 42% before it comes up with installation error. I search my desktop and see I have the free trial downloaded and so I uninstalled that and then tried to install the bought version again but still comes up with installation error and the free trial is installed again.

  • Why won't InDesign CS6 merge my data?

We've just started doing NCR work for customers. As I had no idea how to data merge I had someone come in and show me how to do so.
My first NCR jobs are job sheets, so I fit two onto a page and need 2 pieces of data on them.
I have made the spread sheet as I was shown and saved it as a CSV. I then used the data merge to place the info where needed. However, when I click create merged document it comes up with a buffering kind of symbol and freezes. InDesign then follows by failing to respond.
It's really confused me as I've tried to redo it a few times and at one point, it did work straight away, so I'm pretty sure I've done the process correctly. Whereas I had a stupid moment and forgot to save before doing the second set of data. I'm back to square one now.
Is this an issue for anyone who merges data and is anyone aware of how I can fix this?
We need to get this done sooner rather than later.

No, and maybe this is the problem.
Data Merge is a multi-step process. First is to create your data file (which I think you've done, if you  saved that spreadsheet as .csv).
Next is to create a new 1-page file as the template. Now go to Window > Utilities > DataMerge to open the Data Merge panel. Ftom the flyout menu in the data merge panel choose Select Data Source... and find your CSV file. You should now see Row 1 and Row 2 listed in the window.
Add two text frames to the document where you want the numbers, and drag the Row 1 tag into the first and the Row 2 tag into the second.
For merge type select single record per page.
    Press the merge button.
You should get a new file with 50 pages for 50 records.

  • Why won't InDesign recognize fonts all of a sudden?

We've been using InDesign (CS6) to design our company business cards (designing and uploading them ourselves allows us to get a great deal), and up until now it's been fine. Today, however, I opened up one of the business card files to change something only to find that the font used in our logo is now unrecognizable to InDesign, and is being replaced with Myriad Pro. I've tried restarting my laptop and moving the font to InDesign's font folder, but with no luck. It's a font that I downloaded some time ago, but which is working on all of Microsoft office and the other Adobe programs in CS6. Has anyone ever had this happen before? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

You have a "bad" font on your system and it whacks out things. Remove the offending font.

  • Why won't it hold a charge?

I have an iPhone 3Gs and the battery isn't holding a charge very well.  Other than limit the number of applications using location services, turning off bluetooth, and reducing the frequency of checking email, is there anything else I can do just short of replacing it or restoring the OS?
    Thanks.

You can try double clicking the home button, then when the row of icons appear across the bottom of the screen, touch one until they all start to jiggle and a minus sign in a red circle appears on each.  Tap the signs and dismiss the icons, apps, so nothing is running in the background.  If nothing helps, the iPhone 3GS is old enough the battery may very well need to be replaced.  The Apple store genius bar can tell you what it will cost to replace.

  • Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start?

Why does InDesign CS6 forget my preferences when I re-start? Not every time, but often. It's very frustrating to have to re-enter all my prefs. Every once in a while I start up InDesign CS6 and the new document dialog shows page sizes in po (I always use inches) and the prefs all seem to revert to default.

Do you have a Windows PC and when shutting down, is Indesign still open? If so, this can result in a damaged preferences when still writing while Indesign is being terminated by the system.

  • Why won't Acrobat X Pro honor the margin (art box) from PDF's exported from InDesign CS6?

Why won't Acrobat X Pro honor the margin (art box) from PDF's exported from InDesign CS6?
When I export a PDF from InDesign CS6 with specific margins, Acrobat does not recognize the Art box. (I have PitStop Pro 11 for page box view)

    Thanks Steve,
We are exporting PDF's as you indicate. I see the same thing. The boxes are all the size of the original InDesign document. The PDF art box should be predicated by the margins in InDesign. When we had CS3, this worked great. Now, it seems that there is a disconnect between the two Adobe products honoring the page box size. I have contacted the Adobe techs via chat, and they had no clue what I was referring to. I find it mystifying that Acrobat can not interpret the art box set in InDesign as margins.
