Why won't iPhoto '11 display CR2 tags for Canon 7D raw files

iPhoto '11 won't display CR2 tags for the raw files from my Canon 7D. I didn't have any problem with my Rebel ST or any previous version of iPhoto.
Any help to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Allan

What a pity you didn't make the clear in your initial post. Would have saved us both some time.
It might also help to clarify some terminology. What you are calling the "image file number" is the Title of the photo. When you haven't added a tite, iPhoto uses the filename.
You can easily sort Raws from jpegs as Raws are automatically tagged with a keyword on import. So a quick smart album will tell them apart.
As to why it hasn't been fixed, you will have to ask Apple that question, no one here knows and Apple aren't here.

    Not wrong?
Let us have a look at the error message:
"The following files were not imported because they could not be read"
This clearly gives the user the impression that there is a reading error where you want to copy the files from. Is that the actual error?
No, the actual error is that the file could not be written at the destination.
It is possible that it is not factually wrong because Lightroom first make a failed copying attempt without giving an error message, then still assumes that the files have been copied and tries to import them, and THEN makes a failed import attempt from the destination and gives the error message. But that would never be anyone's first guess when they experience that error message.
A much better error message would be: "The following files were not imported because they could not be copied to the destination folder."

  • Aperture suddenly displaying "unsupported format" for Nikon D300s RAW files

I am using Aperture 3.1.3 on my iMac 24 with Snow Leopard 10.6.8.   A couple of days ago I applied an update for Aperture RAW files that was in my update list, even though I don't use any of the cameras involved.
After that update Aperture gives me an "unsupported format" error on all my Nikon D300s RAW files. Every RAW file in the library.  I have never had a problem with this at any time over the last 2+ years of using Aperture.
I have tried using time machine and rolling Aperture back to the end of July (my most recent backup) along with rolling back the RAW file plist. I then did a repair permissions, and reimported the photos after this.  I have rebooted numerous times.  All to no avail.  I have not yet tried a library rebuild that would be next if I must.
I use a Referenced library, so I was able to check out individual RAW files with Adobe Camera RAW.   They open fine so there is no file corruption issue.
Any thoughts on what might be happening?  Any other file(s) associated with RAW conversion that I might need to roll back?   I do not see any mention of a problem like this when searching the web or the forum (although I may have missed something by not searching the correct terms).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The raw camera bundle is  /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle
Go to /System/Library/CoreServices with the Finder, locate the the RawCamera.bundle package, select it and then do a File->Get Info on the package. You should have version 3.8.0, that is the latest and the one that you should have downloaded last week. If it is not 3.8.0 stop here and post back what version you do have, something isn't right.
Assuming you have 3.8.0  use the Finder to navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices and then delete the RawCamera.bundle package. The Finder will ask you to authorize the delete.
Then go to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.7 download and install it. That will put you back to the last CameraRaw update before this one.
See if that fixes your problem.
As always when messing around with system files it is possible to mess things up so make sure you have a good backup before proceeding, And if any of these instructions make you nervous you might want to hold off doing them.
    good luck

  • Trouble with iPhoto after latest update for compatibility with RAW-files

Hi all, I'm having serious trouble with iPhoto since the latest update for compatibility with RAW-files for digital fotocamera's (version 2.4).
After connection with the camera iphoto starts up as usual and i can start importing my pictures. So far all goes well. After having imported my pictures (visual with thumbs and so one) and having created an event iPhoto isn't able to show any pictures. Stopping and restarting Iphoto gives a message that there are a number of photo's available that havent been imported yet (!!???). I can choose to import or ignore. Whatever i choose i'm not capable of visualising the photo's.
Anyone with a similar problem and the solution? Can i remove the update?
I've tried several camera's all with the same problem.
    thx for any replies
    niki001

Hi Terence, thanks for the reply (i'll wait with the downgrade for now ;-p).
I made a small step by step report of my findings:
    1. Attach camera to imac
    2. iPhoto starts up with previews of the pictures (so far so good)
    3. Give event-name and start import ( so far so good)
    4. 'Latest Import'-report all fine, previews ok, check with event : previews fine. All seems well
    5. disconnect camera, stop iPhoto. As far as now all seems normal.
    6. Restart iPhoto : Message 'iPhoto Library contains photo's which havent been imported. Import Y/N?'.!!!???
    7. Option Y : IPhoto imports photo's imported in step 3 in a new event box (shown as a 'black box' on screen). Last made event (step 3) shows up as a black square in overview all events. Double click on event gives empty squares where previews should appear. Double click on photo preview gives large explanationmark on screen.
    8. Drag event-box over screen shows thumbs within square, release event returns to 'black box'.
    9. Shut down iPhoto.
    10. Restart iPhoto jumps back to step 6 as long as i keep answering Y.(Each time creating a new extra 'black box event').
    11. When i now look within iPhoto Library i can find a map Import in which i can find back the last imported photo's from step 3.
    12. Dragging these pictures to my desktop (preview gives no problem at all) and from there back in to iPhoto simply recreats a new 'black box event'.
    13. In step 6 option N gives a message 'creat iphoto Library recovered'. In iPhoto Library map Import has disapeared.
14.When looking into map 'iphoto Library recovered' i can find my originally iported photo's. However same problem as in step 12.
I used aperture (trial version) to see wether the problem could be photo-related, but here al goes well.
    So, any idea's???
    thx

more info would help. If you're using actionscript and

Sorry no mind readers here so you have to tell us details, context and any error messages - just stating an abstract problem that could have thousands of causes is not enough
What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? what has changed since it worked? How are you trying to open it (clicking on the icon in the Dock, double clicking on the application in the applications folder, ???)?

  • IPhoto choking on  canon 30D raw files

Tried to run a pro shoot through iPhoto but it appears to be choking on Canon 30D raw files (.cr2 extension). I'm getting an assortment of odd problems (missing or oddly rendered images, saves that never finish, sliders that take 30 seconds to move; times when moving the white balance slider has no visible impact on the photo) that basically have left me scratching my head about iPhoto (at least with Canon 30D raw). I was using features like Duplicate and saving edited raw files as TIFF but those are all documented features and so I would expect them to work properly.
Is anyone successfully using iPhoto with 30D raw files?
I have Aperture and it works great with the same set of raw files but iPhoto is so quick and easy (which saves time but also means that it's easier to get other team members involved in the workflow) that it's tempting to use it at least as the front-end for selects and preliminary development. Or maybe iPhoto is just for jpegs at the end of the day even though it does seem to have a fairly capable raw converter?

Tried to use with Lieca Raw also errors.

  • When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files?

When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files? I have a new camera and would love to use the raw files in iphoto. No luck so far. Aperature seems to lack the abilty to open them also. Anyone here as to when iphoto will be updated?

    Hi again.
No, I don't use aperture, I tried the demo and liked it, but I'd previously bought the commercial version of Pixmantec RawShooter converter for my 10D - Pixmantec were 'bought out' by Adobe, and Adobe generously offered all RawShooter purchasers a free licence for Lightroom, which I also like a lot (though haven't fully got to grips with), so can't currently justify Aperture too.
The one thing I'd say about Aperture is that the colour management for some reason just nailed the colours when printing using canned profiles, in a way other apps hadn't on Windows (including QImage). I was particularly impressed by this using an old Epson 1290S A3+ printer which always tended to produce prints with a colour cast.
iPhoto seems to handle RAW conversions very well and simply, although it's not as refined as the high end apps. This together with organising features are probably what make you find it so easy. Remember though that when you display/tweak RAW files, iPhoto will be creating a file to store these changes as the RAWs do not get directly manipulated. As all this is done behind the scenes again this probably makes it seem easy.
If you don't have Aperture or Lightroom, both were available for 30 day demo last time I checked.

  • CS4 won't read Canon T1i raw files

CS4 won't read Canon T1i raw files. Is this a known problem? Is there an update or plugin that I need to download? If so, where can I find it? Thanks for your help.

T1i support was added in Camera Raw 5.4. It sounds like your Camera Raw may be out of date.
From within Photoshop, choose "Updates…" from the Help menu. It'll do its thing and eventually Adobe Updater should tell you updates are available. Run through that install process and you should be set to go.
Note that you will have to quit Photoshop during the installation process, so make sure all your work is saved.

  • Why won't iPhoto import D700 RAW images?

Yesterday I tried to import 809 RAW (NEF) images from my Nikon D700 camera into the iPhoto program on a friend's iMac. It imported one image, but refused to import the remaining 808! I don't understand why it didn't accept the whole batch.
The iMac in question is a 20" Intel unit purchased new in 2006. The OS system has been upgraded to Leopard (version 10.5.8) and iPhoto to version 8.1.2. There's still plenty of available space (145 GB) on the hard drive.
Any ideas on what the problem might be and how to remedy it?
    Bob

    Larry,
    Thanks for the reply.
I can confirm that D700 RAW images were downloadable to earlier versions of iPhoto than iPhoto '11.
Until January 2012 I had a 20" Intel iMac purchsed in 2007 that was very similar to that of my friend. It also had Leopard  and iPhoto '09, and I was able to download D700 RAW images to it. In fact, one of the main reasons I upgraded that iMac from Tiger and iPhoto '06 to Leopard and iPhoto '09 was so that I could download D700 RAW images.
I now have a new 27" iMac with Lion and iPhoto '11 and have no problems downloading D700 RAW images.
I remain puzzled why the D700 RAW files--with the exception of one--wouldn't download to my friend's  iMac.

  • New user - why won't some LANDSCAPE format pics open for editing?

Help!! Having just returned to the wonderful world of the Mac after years away on a PC, I'm struggling to edit my photos and successfully comprehend the links between the original jpeg files I'm downloading and the thumbnails onscreen.
I'm reasonably technical, a Photoshop user and don't understand why it is that I can't DOUBLE CLICK on a LANDSCAPE picture and edit it...
For some reason, I can't even edit my landscape photos in iPhoto (which I'm resorting to as in a hurry with a particular project)....
Is there some reason why LANDSCAPE pictures aren't appearing in iPhoto's EDIT window? It only display's portrait pictures - all the landscape pics are replaced with a grey window and an exclaimation mark '!'
The pictures are still there, just WON'T OPEN in edit mode in either iPhoto or Photoshop when I double click them (and yes, I have set the Preferences to default edit in Photoshop).
    Can anyone help please?

    nixmax
The important thing to remember is that iPhoto is not just an image viewer. It's a Photo Organiser, that is a database, with a built-in image viewer, lightweight editing and version control. Hence, photos must be imported, it's not enough that they are simply dropped into a folder.
When you import and image into iPhoto, by default (tho you can change this) it is copied into the iPhoto Library Folder at Home/Pictures. The intention is that you will now use iPhoto for managing the files as well as displaying the pics. So once a pic is in iPhoto everything you need to do can be done via the iPhoto Window, including removing pics. In this (the default) scenario, once the photos have been imported to iPhoto you can discard your original files.
Once in iPhoto, anything you do is done on a copy of the File. You can always revert to the Original.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
The thumbnail points to the most recent version of the pic, and if you want to reach the Original, use the Revert To Original command. This will remove the modified file. If you want to keep the Modified one, duplicate it, then use the Revert... command to create a new version.
The standard warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
However, there is no real reason to go into the iPhoto Library Folder. If you want to accessa file there are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Only you can decide if you should preservere. It's not that difficult, more a conceptual leap than a huge learning curve. Hopefully the above will help, and if it doesn't, by all means post again.
