Why won't it back up so I can update to 2.2?

I've been trying to update my 2G iPhone to 2.2 since 4 PM yesterday. It's almost 11 AM, and I've had little success.
It seems that iTunes 8.0.2 (and 8.0.1 yesterday) isn't able to complete a backup, even for a sync. I tried to sync it several times yesterday in between tantrums and cursing at the 2.2 update, but it wasn't even able to initiate a backup. I did do a successful sync by applying a few random changes in iTunes, but it skipped the backup.
When I try to update, it extracts the pre-downloaded file, starts backing up, and really doesn't go anywhere. This sync has lasted a couple hours and hasn't backed up a tenth of my iPhone. I had the update running all night, only to see that it was unsuccessful because the phone "disconnected," despite the fact that the computer and phone didn't move at all. I even tried deleting the update so that it would have to re-download it, but that didn't change anything.
Could it be a defective cord? iTunes has no problem acknowledging the iPhone, but the backup doesn't work (or just takes days). I added a ton of books to eReader since my last sync, so could that make any difference? I saw a video of 8-hour iPhone syncs once, but I think I'm setting a record right now.
I posted a topic on this yesterday but haven't heard from anyone, so I really do appreciate any help.

the last iPhone update said that it "significantly reduced" the back-up time for the iPhone, and for a while it did. I've noticed it get steadily longer and longer to where now i am having the same issue you are, it taking forever to backup even if it's just a standard sync. It's possible that the different applications that are on the phone, especially if they take a lot of memory and/or use a lot of the phone's RAM may cause the backup to take a lot longer than intended, but that's just my guess.

Try Single User mode (Command+S while starting up).
Then, run fsck.
At the command-line prompt type:
/sbin/fsck -fy

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

As the iPhone 4 doesn't support iOS 8, it might be useful to establish what phone and iOS you actually have. Go to Settings>General>About. What is the model number? What is the iOS version?
What do you mean by "maps app will not load?". Do you mean the built in Maps app? What happens when you try? What troubleshooting steps have you already taken? Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the apple appears?

I had a similar issue with my phone.....it just shut off and wouldn't come back on even thought it was charged. My daughter toggled the mute switch several times and then she pressed and held down the home and lock buttons. It worked......would be worth a shot.

Did you get a message on your phone about not enough storage space and therefore could not update the iOS?
The storage space referred to in a message like that is the space on your device. It is not the amount of iCloud storage you have. What you need to do is delete enough files, photos, videos, apps etc. from your iPhone so as to free up enough space on the phone so that you can download the update.

I am backing up my I-Tune's library on a stack of Maxwell CD-RW's but find that they won't play on my Bose Wave Radio/CD or the Sony entertainment center CD player. Am I using the wrong medium or the wrong format?

I'd rather ask this question in the iTunes forum but my guess is Bose CD player is reading only audio CDs and not data CDs. When you're doing a backup, you're writing a data CD, containing either mp3s or AACs. Altough some more recent CD players are able to read mp3s, most don't.

Hello. Please can anyone help?
After having issues with my iphone4, I was told to restore it as it was probably a software issue.
So today I have made sure to back up to icloud, and onto my computer / itunes. After restoring my phone, you go through the steps on the iphone, to resore the back up from itunes there shows a symbol of the itunes and a wire to connect. I have connected to itunes and it will not sync. All the information is there on my computer, it goes through all the steps to sync, 1-6 then goes back to itunes. But none of the data is on my iphone, my iphone is still on the 'connect to itunes' symbol!
Am i doing something wrong? How can I get all my data back onto my iphone?

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Why won't ios 6.1.1 download and update on my phone properly?

Got a txt of Vodafone sayings ios 6.1.1 is ready to be downloaded, connected my phone up to back up then I download the update. Everything going fine until, the connect to iTunes screen comes up on my phone. Then an error comes up saying phone cannot be restored (-1), so I disconnect and reconnect, download the update again and the same error comes up. I've ran a diagnostic test on iTunes and it says my phone isn't connected, so I've changed USB, but when I connect my phone iTunes will load automatically. Ran the two test through command prompt (syncing phone via windows) and they were fine as well. Date & time are right, Internet is fine, and I'm sure my anti virus isn't blocking anything. Restarted the computer and phone and still comes up with the same error. I am tempted to connect my phone to my MacBook and having it restored on their, but I haven't synced it with my mac for ages as I normally use windows. I have no idea why this is happening!

Basically, my friend had showed me a number sequence to enter on my phone, which brought up a 'secret menu' that displayed various things about the signal. So instead of having the standard signal strength bars, my phone displays -133 (for example), the closer the number is to absolute 0 the stronger the signal. I haven't had problems with this change, so I'm not sure if this is the problem causing it

In short, I was accidentally restoring/resetting my 1st generaton iPod Touch and I wanted to quickly get out of that, so I rebooted as you all know is that I held the Sleep and Home buttons together, and now, it doesn't want to turn on at all! When I try to turn on, only the "Apple" symbol appears ad disappears, goes back off, no power, after a few seconds. Any heard of this or experienced something similar? Anyone know any tricks if so? And, no, I have no time to go to AppleCare, especially since it's an outdated, 1st genration iPod Touch, and for that I feel no need to make an urgent appointment to them. I appreciate any feedback. - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
