Why won't it hold a charge?

I have an iPhone 3Gs and the battery isn't holding a charge very well.  Other than limit the number of applications using location services, turning off bluetooth, and reducing the frequency of checking email, is there anything else I can do just short of replacing it or restoring the OS?
Thanks.

You can try double clicking the home button, then when the row of icons appear across the bottom of the screen, touch one until they all start to jiggle and a minus sign in a red circle appears on each.  Tap the signs and dismiss the icons, apps, so nothing is running in the background.  If nothing helps, the iPhone 3GS is old enough the battery may very well need to be replaced.  The Apple store genius bar can tell you what it will cost to replace.

If you are still having problems with your iPad, it is still under AppleCare.
Bring it into an Apple Store to have it diagnosed and repaired under warranty.

Have you got a friend who has the same phone, you could try to use their adapter and see if you could get it fixed. Also you could upgrade the iOS5 see if it fixes the issue. http://www.itjungles.com/iphone-tips/iphone-4s-update-to-ios5-to-fix-battery-pow er-issue

Why won't my MACBOOK PRO charge anymore, I am living in China and my 8 month old MACBOOK PRO won't take a charge!! It has now gone flat and I am out of a computer. I bought a new charger but that didn't work. This is ridiculous!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
To check that the battery is damaged, open System Information or System Profiler (in /Applications/Utilities), choose Power in the sidebar, and copy here "Charge Information" and "Health Information". You can also check your battery status in the battery menu, on the menu bar. If its status is Replace Now or Service Battery, take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to have the battery replaced for free.

Does the wall charger successfully charged other devices like iPad, iPhones?
There are some complaints,  that the 10W iPad wall charger does not charge iPod Classic, as it is too high power, Claasic need 1Amp max, but the iPad Charger gives 2 Amp.

  • Why won't my iphone 3gs charge even though it is plugged in?

Hi guys, so I've had my 3gs for nearly 2 years. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that charging it wasn't going easy. When my iphone shuts down from no battery life and I plug it in to charge, it charges enough to turn itself back on, but when it eventually turns back on it won't charge anymore? Even though it is still plugged in and switched on by the plug. So I have to take out the USB, turn off the switch to the plug, turn the switch back on, plug the USB back in and it charges again.
BUT, recently not even that does it. I've tried different plug sockets, i've rebooted it. I've tried leaving the USB cable in and just turning on and off the plug switch.
So at the moment it's just going through a circle of running out of battery, charging and turning itself back on, having 4% battery and dying again and repeating.
So I googled my problem and didn't really find a solution. I mean the plug and USB cable are fine. Clearly it charges fine because it charges enough to turn itself back on when it's shut down.
I found out that when the iphone is plugged in but turned off it still charges so I tried this when it started itself up again, and it charges!!
But why won't it charge when the phone is on and plugged in??

    Hi waplington123,
If your iPhone will not start up unless connected to power, you may want to troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Specifically -
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Why won't my Nissan Xterra charging port charge my iphone 5?

Why won't my Nissan Xterra 12v charging port charge my iphone 5?

You should probably direct that question to Nissan. Are you using an Apple-approved charger cable? If you are, then you definitely need to ask Nissan. If you are not, then you need to purchase one that has been approved by Apple for it to work.
    Cheers,

  • Why won't my iPhone 6 charge with any other charger but the one it came with? please help!

My iPhone 6 won't charge with any other charger, can anyone explain why?

Make sure both the charger and connector are certified and that they are in good working order. Test them with another iPhone if possible. If the charger is working, then the problem might be the lighting connector port. Check and see if it is dirty. If not then there might be a hardware problem. Take the phone in to an Apple Store or authorized service provider for evaluation and possible replacement. Take the cable and charger as well.

  • Why won't apple support the charging cable I bought?

I bought a cheaper charging cable online. It worked just fine before the ios7 upgrade. Now the software won't let the cable charge my phone because I didn't pay apple $30 for it. This is ridiculous and the opposite of why I was an apple fan before. Not to mention how overpriced the apple cable is. Not cool.

Apple has no obligation to support someone else's product. Why you would expect that is beyond understanding.

  • HT1476 why is battery not holding a charge

why is battery not holding a charge

How long does a full charge last and what is the iPod doing during that time?
    Could be a bad battery

  • Why isn't it holding a charge as long?

My 2-year-old Ipod isn't holding a charge as long anymore and frequently heats when using awhile.

Hey Dorise, You could try a reset or a restore, make sure you make a full backup of all your stuff on this iPod to your computer before you attempt to restore. But, I don't think it's going to work, I think your battery is starting to fail. Shorter usage time and getting abnormally hot are signs of a failing battery. Take your iPod to your Apple store and have it evaluated bring your cable also. If it is a battery issue it can be replaced for $79.00 plus shipping / handling and taxes. If it's another problem if I remember correctly is $99 to $199 for a refurbished iPod, (you didn't say which iPod you have, so guessing a little). Good luck, Cheers.

  • Why isnt my ipod holding its charge?

since i got my ipod in 2011 my ipod wasnt holding its charge. i have wanted to threaten the company to send me a new one for free because i charged it all night when i got it and the next day when i went to use it my battery was dead in less than 5min.

First threatening will not work, bad idea-- always tends to put people off. Have you ruled out a bad cable or charger, or damage or corrosion to the charging port? You could try a Reset, may help, but I'm thinking your battery has gone south. The battery is not meant to last forever, they do wear out. Are you having any other problems, like over heating during charging or during use, did the charging cycles seem to get longer and longer as use time shortened? After approximately 400 charging cycles the battery starts to fail, not holding a charge is a symptom. Maybe time for a new battery. Apple will replace for $79.00 plus shipping and handling and taxes. You may want to contact your Apple store or the Apple Genius Bar and have your iPod evaluated. Good luck, Cheers.

  • Why won't the data cable charge my iPad when connected to pc

For some reason when I connect my iPad to my pc with the supplied data cable it won't charge the iPad. It syncs ok but just won't charge it.
Is there a reason for this or do I need to get a different cable?
When I connect my iPhone to the pc with data cable from iPad, it charges my iPhone.
I just really need to know why it therefore won't charge my iPad.
The only way I can charge iPad up at the moment is by connecting it to the mains plug with data cable supplied

Bravo Blues#2. I often wonder what happens to some people when wrapped in the blanket of anonymity. Rather than use the faceless forum of an online discussion group to show the best in human nature, so often people become nasty, arrogant, or just plain anti-social.
    Thanks for saying something.
On another note, I consistently have a problem charging my iPads with any cable other than the short cable
supplied by Apple. I have purchased over a half dozen ten foot cables and they will charge my iPod and iPhone just fine. I have tried exchanging the cables, the chargers and the iPads. With every charger I reach the same result, I cannot find a ten foot cable that will charge my iPad. I could probably go to Apple and buy a cable from them, but they are SO expensive.
Suggestions?  What, other than length, is the difference between the short cables that come with the device and the longer cables I keep getting from eBay?
    Thanks much for your help.

  • Why won't my Macbook Pro charge?

All of a sudden, my Macbook Pro won't charge. I believe it has something to do with the charger, it no longer charges when my Macbook is off, and rarely when it is on, even! Sometimes it will start charging but only if the computer-connecting end is in a very specific position. Sometimes, not at all. I've tried changing power outlets, and restarting the computer. Also, the aforementioned end has a couple scratches, but doesn't appear to have any serious external damage. I've seen the prices of new chargers, and I'm really hoping to avoid buying a new one. Also, is there anything I could've done to mess up the charger? And how can I make my Macbook charge normally again? Please help!

try unplugging the adapter from the wall and mac for 1 minute, then plug it back in and see what happens.  you can also try resetting the SMC.If you live near an Apple store, it can't hurt to bring the mac to and the charger to get it diagnosed.  Alternativley, you can purchase a refurbished charger.

  • Why won't my ipad 2 charge

I am having trouble with my iPad to be charged please can someone reply a good strategy that would help it ? I need it for school tomorrow

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
