Why won't it play???

we created a new dvd project- with themes and a iphoto book. we saved it and are ready to burn onto a disc, but it will not play. the only thing that does play is the theme. we are new mac users...does anyone know what the problem might be?

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

I was on the same boat, bud! I saw you had the exact same problem as I did and decided to come back to help you out. On another apple discussion page, a user--Charlicharli-- posted a link to download and everything seems to be fine now. Apparently we had to check with Lenovo. We were looking in all the wrong places for the fix!

1) The Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) format is not supported by QT X.
2) The Advanced Stream Redirector (ASX) format is not supported by QT 7 without third-party support such as the Fil4Mac WMV components.
3) Even the Flip4Mac WMV component only "supports a small subset of the ASX file format."
On my system:
1) Trying to play the file directly in QT X using the "Open Location..." option returns the fillowing message, "The movie 'mdsmarttool.asx' can’t be opened because the file is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. The file may be damaged or may not be a movie file that is compatible with QuickTime Player."
2) Trying to play the file directly in QT 7 using the "Open URL..." option returns the following message in the "Inspector" window, "Movie Unavailable."
3) Trying to download the linked file does nothing. (Aborts action without any message.)
4) Trying to open the URL in Safari returns the following message, "The operation couldn't be completed. A Microsof Media Server (MMS) error was encountered. (-19160) Try again. If the problem persists, contact the website administrator."
Based on these results, it would appear that there may either be an access problem or a file type support problem.

Thanks .Ralph. The problem is only on the iPad 2only. I have an iPad 1 as well and it never had the problem. The only videos that I have tried are you tube and the tutorials on apple.com. I have absolutely no problem on either of my laptops or desktop PC's. Only the iPad 2. I am a new Apple user, so not very familiar yet with the product, but this is an absolute deal breaker for me. With Apple's reputation I was not expecting any such problems and it is beyond my skill set to solve it. Very frustrating. Again, no problem with you tube videos. I don't watch movies, so am not a Netflix member and haven't tried that yet, only you tube videos and apple.com tutorial videos. I have to watch those on my laptop. Again, I found a fix to the you tube problem. It was a link to a site. www.youtube/html5. html5 video player trial that you click on and once done, the videos on the you tube app started working great. They were doing the same thing as the tutorial videos prior to that. No such luck with the other web videos, at least the ones that i have tried. Hope this is enough info and understandable. You might check out the html5 site. I didn't thoroughly understand why, but it worked. You may understand it better. I am a proficient user, but far from an I.t. Pro. I have read Many posts with similar problems, but no simple solutions and the ones I did try didn't work. Speed tested well. Channel is set to auto and always different than neighboring networks, usually channel 11. Tried disabling QOS as suggested....no good. I am completely stumped. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. I just found it strange that it was one of many files that I ripped from a DVD ( part of a box set of a TV series, and all the others were fine so far. Funny that this one in particular was causing a problem.

Why Won't Videos Play On Fox News?

I saw this was asked some time back and they said to clear History. I did what they said and still they won't play. Issue just started today.

Thanks - but not sure why this did not affect Internet Explorer as well. It has to be a Firefox issue; not a Flash issue. I will remove the 11.3 and look back to previous version or just - for the time being - just forget videos on Fox News or got to I E to see them. But noticed that this has happened with Fox and Firefox in the past as well. Thanks again.

I used to be able to read at least youtube videos on my ipad, but not anymore, for an obscure reason. The videos seem to be loading, but a click on the play button won't make it start. Would you know why and how to fix it?

I have a similar problem. More info for my case. ...
iOS 5.1.1, orig iPad.
Play button changes when touched, but does not start playing.
MLB.com, YouTube, and other magazine-style sites are affected.
This is NOT the Flash video problem. Those still load with the play button x-Ed out.
Some videos, e. g. Facebook ones, play, sometimes.
The problem started for me about two weeks ago.
I tried to fix by a full power down and restart. That didn't help.
I saw on another thread to try "reset". I'll try that next.

Why won't YouTube play my Apple TV? It just displays a constant loading circle.

I've seen this question asked before with no replies. Does anyone know? I have subscriptions that play fine on my iMac, iPad, iPad Air and iPhone, but in the last couple of months I only get the loading circle on my AppleTV.

I don't know why, but restarting my Apple TV device worked for me…..General -> Settings -> Restart.
And now I remember it worked for me in the past too. Makes no sense and I'll probably end up forgetting this petty kink in the future, but it's almost like if I don't use my Apple TV for a month or more I it seems to conveniently forgets my Youtube connections.

Are you certain you finished downloading it? Typically, the download is huge and may take a long time.

Why won't iTunes play most of my albums?

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to the OS X, 10.9.1, a while ago. I haven't used the iTunes player on this device in even a longer time. It will play any of the individual songs from those albums, but not the album as a whole. It seems that any new albums I've imported work just fine. So was there an upgrade to ITunes or my Mac that made my existing music library limited somehow or ??? Can it be fixed easily?

I found this in one of the "more like this":
Under iTunes > Preferences, uncheck "Show list checkboxes".
Albums will then play normally then by just clicking them in Songs or Albums views.
It worked! Not sure of the purpose of the check boxes, so won't know what it limits now or enhances with it unchecked.But it fixed my issue.

Why won't QT play this .mov file?

The below movie won't play in iTunes, QT, QT 7 Pro, or VLC. QT says I'm missing a 3rd party add-on or plug-in. I've tried to convert it with DiVX and it goes through the process, but the resulting file opens as a movie, but only shows a black screen with the audio.
Can anyone tell me what is it about this file that makes it unplayable? Here's what's in the info window:\

Alright...some new info. I found two files in iTunes--one would play and the other wouldn't. I tried to open each in QT, QT 7 Pro, VLC, DiVX player, with the same results--one worked, one did not.
I opened Get Info on each .mov file and EVERY IMPORTANT DATA POINT was the same.
Kind: QuickTime Movie
Dimensions: 640 x 480
Codecs: H264, ACC
Color profile: SD (6-1-6)
Audio channels: 1
I could Read and Write on both.
So how would one file play and the other one just play audio?
I'm obviously missing something. I'd truly apprecate some insight.

Why won't ATV play HD video from iMovie?

This question incorporates two different systems (ATV and Imovie) but I thought I would start here.
ATV will play HD movies rented through Itunes. Why then can I not Save/Export movies from Imovie in HD and view them on ATV?
Any thoughts?

You can export HD movies from these applications for the Apple TV, it's just that they need to be in a specific format. Rudegar has provided those specifics and I proposed options that are available in both iMovie and Final cut that can meet them, the export settings will produce the same specification of file that you can purchase from the iTunes store.
If you are asking why the Apple TV doesn't support all the types of files iMovie and final cut can produce then there are a few reasons for that:
Firstly the Apple TV has limited capabilities, it simply can't play the high end sort of stuff these editing applications can produce, to do that it would need much more processing power which would ultimately make the Apple TV more expensive and out of reach for the vast majority of its target base who simply want iTunes store quality content.
Secondly, the editing software can produce content for many delivery platforms, iMovie and final cut are targeted at a much wider consumer than just people wanting to make video for the Apple TV, some want video on DVD, others on blu-ray, others may want to export it for windows users or just play it on their macs.
Finally, not all export options are delivery formats, there are times when you want video in non delivery formats for further production, production formats are not designed to be used for delivery and in many cases simply aren't playable on any (consumer system).
It's the job of the editor (in these type of applications) to make sure they are delivering the finished movie in the right format for what it will be used for. In the case of the Apple TV, that's share to iTunes and then choose the Apple TV option.
