Why won't iTunes 11 save my selection anymore?

Have to use crtl+L constantly now just to find which song I'm currently playing. As soon as I search some other menu in iTunes 11, my selection is lost.
iTunes 10 didn't have this issue....it's like they took a step backwards here.

Problem 1 - Ctrl-L doesn't work.
a) Show Sidebar enabled.
If a track is played from a playlist, then the user navigates to another playlist or library, then CTRL-L doesn't return the user to the track being played, but to the head of the playlist which is playing the track.
However, if a track is played from a library ("Music"), then the user navigates to a playlist, then CTRL-L does return the user to the track being played; the track is highlighted.
b) Show Sidebar disabled.
I found no scenario where Ctrl-L didn't do as expected.
Problem 2 - Show in playlist doesn't work
a) Show Sidebar enabled
Highlight a track, anywhere (in a Playlist), right-click.  From the context menu select Show in Playlist, and select to show the track in another playlist, then the head of the selected playlist is shown and the track is not shown.
However, doing the same, but selecting to Show in Playlist, but the playlist is a library ("Music") does work, the song is highlighted in the library.
b) Show Sidebar disabled
I found no scenario where Show in Playlist doesn't work as expected
I do note the new features in the box at the top (technical description!) also don't work as implied by their description when Show Sidebar is enabled.
For example "go to current song" has the same problem as CTRL-L; and show in playlist in that context also doesn't work.
What does work is the context menu in the mini-album cover in the box at the top, where it says eg "go to Alice Cooper" or "go to the best of Alice Cooper" or "go to School's Out".
